Representation in rock/indie magazines

Page 2: Representation h

In the NME magazine, the female artist is represented as dominant and strong. She is represented this way by her use of mise-en-scene and body language. The camera shot is a mid-close up shot which shows the stern expression on the artist face representing how she is serious about her career. The diamond coated bird on her shoulder represents how she is rebellious and her success as she can afford such items, it helps to promote the rock genre. The use of the make up makes her appear feminine but the dark contrasting clothing, typical of a rock genre, represents her as strong and independent as opposed to elegant and delicate.

The use of colour also represents the magazine as being diverse as the font is san serif which promotes masculinity yet the colour represents the feminine elements to the magazine. Taboo language is also used which represents the rock genre as it is stereotypical of rock to be rebellious and say exactly what they think.

The use of colours represent the calmer elements to the rock/indie magazine such as the use of blue and purple. Colours such as red and black contrasts as they connote violence and aggression. These contrasting colours also represent the bold and strong characteristics of the artists featured as the mina aspect of the front cover.

The use of fonts represent the artist as being bold and aggressive as the fonts are written in large font and appear with a black border around the cover story which emphasises its importance. The image is also not stereotypical as the female artist is wearing dark colours such as red and black which also connote anger and dominance, she also has short hair which is black. This represents the artist to be more masculine as opposed to visually showing her femininity. The use of generally close up’s or mid-shot’s being used represents the emotions of the artist generally the facial expression are either serious or are used to promote the individuality of the artist.

The image such as the one with the artist smoking represents the rebellious nature of rock/indie artists whom follow trends and have disregard for rules or social expectations. This represents the magazine to be straight to the point and gives the impression that it is factual magazine as it has no reason to hide any of the truth which an artist of a different genre may not want there audience to know. The use of bold fonts and organised layout represents the simplicity of the magazine.

On NME double page spread, the artists are represented to be rebellious as the image is a close-up.

Therefore it shows the emotions of the artists whom look serious and are leaning forward into the

camera shot this represents there authority and how the male at the front in the middle is superior to

the other members of the band. This usually suggests he is the lead singer as he is the main focus. The

use of the bold san serif font also represents the masculinity of the artists.
