Beginningwiththeissueofminority/diversityrepresentationonthecouncil,manycommitteemembersfeltthatthelong-standingabsenceofproperethnic,women’s,internationalstudents’,andgayandlesbianrepresentationconstitutedasignificantproblemwhichmustbedealtwithbeforethecouncilcouldbetrulyrepresentative.However,thoseofthismindsetwereconfrontedbythosewhofeltthatthepurelyfacultybasedintegrityofthecouncilmustbemain-tainedinordertoupholdprinciplesofequalrepresentation.Giventhatthegroupsadvancedtoreceivediversityseatseachconstitutedaround0%ofthestudentpopulationatthetime,andundertheargumentthattheirdailyneedsandpointsofviewwoulddivergefromthoseoftherestoftheirfaculty,thecommitteeeventuallyadvancedaproposalwhichwouldsee4newdiversitypositionscreated.Thesediversitypositionswerefor)aboriginalstudents2)dis-abledstudents)internationalstudentsand4)ageneraldiversitychair.
ThesegroupsweredeterminedtobeatadisadvantageontheUniversityofLethbridgecampusforavarietyofreasons;whichincluded,butwerenotlimitedto,socialstigmas,physicalbarriers,economic,social,andlanguagebarriersandlackoffundingfortheirrespectiveneeds.Withinstitutionalizedrepresentationfromthesegroupsthecommitteedeterminedthatcouncilwouldbebetterabletoservicetheirneeds.TheCouncilhoweverdidnotadopttheproposalsadvancedbythiscommittee.Councilmembersdivergedintheirreasonings,butsomeoftheargumentspresentedwerethattheallocationofdiversityseatswouldopena“Pandora’sbox”ofpotentiallydisadvantagedgroups

ThequestionofaddingthepositionofVPExternaltothecouncilsimilarlyfailed.Formonthssomeexecutivesarguedthatlobbying,bothattheprovincialandnationallevel,wasnotbeinggiventheconcentratedandfocusedattentionthatitdeserved.Giventhedivisionofconferenceattendancebetweenseveralcouncilmembers,patchedtogetherlobby-inginitiatives,andlackofimportantinputduringmeetingstwothingswereevident:weweretrying,butnotdoingaswellasweshouldbe.Whiletheadditionofanewexecu-tivetotakeonthisportfoliowasinlinewiththedecisionsofotherschools,andwasastraightforwardwaytotackletheproblem,itwasincrediblyexpensive.Itwasdetermined,intwoseparatecouncildecisions,thatthecostwouldnotbeworththebenefit.Bothtimesthisdecisionpassedbyaverysmallmarginandnobettervisionhasyettobesetforth.Throughthebetterandmorepreciseallocationoftheseactivitieswithinthecurrentexecutive,thiscommittee
