Introduction to TV viewing by kids• Most kids plug into the world of television long before they enter

school. As kids get older, too much screen time can interfere with activities such as being physically active, reading, doing homework, playing with friends, and spending time with family.

• Television, in moderation and under adult supervision can be an excellent educator and entertainer. But despite its advantages, too much television can be detrimental.

• Children who consistently spend more than 4 hours per day watching TV are more likely to be overweight.

• Kids who view violent acts are more likely to show aggressive behavior but also fear that the world is scary and that something bad will happen to them.

•Television is a gift of science and has become quite popular among people of all ages. However, excessive watching of TV programmes has an unhealthy effect on children. Should we restrict TV viewing by children?

•Children generally watch television for a longer time than adults.

•The scenes of crimes and violence in our films have an adverse effect on children. They being to regard violent and immoral actions as a part of life and develop an aggressive outlook.

•The children who are found sitting before TV most of the time lost interest in their books and even fail to do their homework. It undoubtedly effects their studies and severely affects children's eyesight.

•Psychologists have found that children who are very fond of TV have reduced ability to endure even minor disappointments. They lose patience; they tend to be indiscipline and pleasure-loving.

•Moreover, excessive TV watching, experts state, retards the process of intellectual development.

•Conclusion : Television, if not controlled, could do more harm than good to a child.

•I wish there was a knob on the TV so you could turn up the intelligence to help children. They got one marked "brightness" but it don't work, does it? ~Leo Anthony Gallagher

•Television has changed a child from an irresistible force to an immovable object. ~Author Unknown

• Children will watch anything, and when a broadcaster uses crime and violence and other shoddy devices to monopolize a child’s attention, it’s worse than taking candy from a baby. It is taking precious time from the process of growing up. ~Author Unknown

•It's just hard not to listen to TV: it's spent so much more time raising us than you have. Bart Simpson

Background of the study

• A common saying heard by all of us is" every coin has two sides“. Similarly, TV also has its adverse effects and advantages.

• Parents and teachers are equally concerned about the possible effects of excessive television viewing on children.

• It is felt that the media is corrupting the minds of innocent children who get addicted to the Idiot Box.

• We are not forcing or recommending any child to watch TV. But, as it will be really difficult to stop children from viewing these programs , we are just suggesting ways so that the same may be used in the positive direction as a learning tool (a positive shift). 6

• An action research was carried out by R&D to find out the programs watched by children in the age group of 8-13 years and suggest ways of integrating TV program as part of learning.

• A simple questionnaire was prepared, administered and Data collected from classes III (through the parents), V and VII (children filled up the format themselves) from all TVS schools.

• Total sample size: 2076 children.

• The data collected was consolidated, tabulated and analyzed. The resulting statistics pointed at the top 5 TV programs watched by children in TVS schools ( in descending order of viewer ship) and later represented as a graph.

Action Plan

• The homework based on the programs watched may be given twice a week. In the course of time, a new informative program may be suggested (Some of them have been recommended in Sl-22 and 23) for viewing and homework integrated to it.

• Although all the programs watched are dubbed in Tamil, the same can be used to enhance language interpretation skills by writing the homework in Tamil, English or Hindi (the language which needs to be improved by the child). This will also help in building writing and communication skills apart from enriching the vocabulary.

• Homework may be integrated to the TV shows or programs that are watched by children regularly and be a source of learning with pleasure.

• The 1st 6 top programs watched by children that are telecast are not serials. They rather come as episodes and each episode has no bearing or relation to the next that follows.

“Television is more interesting than people. If it were not, we would have people standing in the corners of our rooms.”

Thus, a right mix of watching of different programs is desirable. Students must watch programs containing information and knowledge to advance academically and psychologically and other programs like sports, dance and music for relaxation.
