report on internship program
TRANSCRIPT
Introduction:Internships provide real world experience to those looking to explore or gain the relevant knowledge and skills required to enter into a particular career field. Internships are relatively short term in nature with the primary focus on getting some on the job training and taking what’s learned in the classroom and applying it to the real world. Interns generally have a supervisor who assigns specific tasks and evaluates the interns overall work.
I am a student of faculty of Veterinary Medicine & Animal Science of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University. Our DVM program consists of total 15 terms. Among these 15 terms last two terms (8 months) is our internship period. Recently I have completed my internship program from eighteen different placements. During my internship program I have done hospital practice, diagnostic practice, vaccine production, worked in goat farm, poultry farm, dairy farm, dairy plant and feed mill, zoo and safari park practice. This report is a short description of my eight month internship carried out as compulsory component of the DVM degree.
Aim and Objectives of My Internship Program:Gaining a wide experience of a range of veterinary placementLinking theory with practicalStrengthening the ability to identify and treat a range of diseases.Developing inter personal skills.Developing an appreciation of management and placement organization.Gaining an insight into career development.Gaining an insight into professional aspects of practice.

Central Veterinary Hospital (CVH) Kazi Alauddin Road, DhakaCentral Veterinary Hospital is the largest govt. veterinary hospital in Bangladesh. The hospital was first stared in 1920. Our internship program was started from the central veterinary hospital (CVH) which is the largest and specialized hospital for pet animal. The main purpose for which went to CVH is to gain a wide experience of small and pet animal diseases and their treatment, handling, restraining and observing of surgical cases, gathering knowledge about management of pet animal and most importantly link theory with practice. The internship program at CVH was started through the opening speech of Dr. Masudul Hasan , (Veterinary officer, CVH), who told about the history and organogram of this institution. Our Honorable teacher was present at
that time. It was the month of holy ramadan when we started our internship at CVH. Due to ramadan, our working hour was fixed from 09:00 am to 03:00 pm. and friday was the weekend. We maintained that routine throughout the internship program in CVH.
In CVH our daily activities was divided into to parts, first one is regular attending on theory classes which is conducted by the veterinarian of CVH and after that we went to observe and handle the patient as well as recording the cases as many as possible.
Different breeds of pigeon with management and diseases of pigeon and squabs with treatment.
PPR (Paste des petits ruminants) in goat/ sheep with clinical symptoms, differential diagnosis, treatment and preventive managements.
Hernia & evisceration in calf. Treatment procedure of umbilical hernia with use of anthelmintic and suturing materials.
Post-mortem lesions of different diseases of poultry (ND, IBD, Collibacillosis, Salmonellosis, Aspergillosis, Mareks Disease, Avian leucosis, Ascitis)
Different breeds of rabbits and their housing, breeding, nutrition and diseases with treatment.
Castration of sheep/ goat and relation of urolithiasis with treatment. Castration of dog and cat, procedure of spaying and hysterectomy in cat. Social relation among man, animals & birds with zoonotic importance. Wild & aquatic animal treatment.
When we went to record the cases of patient, we found that most of the patients are small pet animals and birds (Dog, cat, rabbit, jamunapari goat, chicken, fancy birds like mayna, parrot, pigeon, kakatua etc).
Major cases that we found and recorded are given below:

Encourage me to develop and demonstrate professional attitudes and capabilities – e.g. a lifelong approach to learning, personal health maintenance, teamwork, and responding appropriately to personal advice in a work context
Problems identified:Accommodation Problem in different placement mainly in Dhaka region.Less co-operativeness at some placement
Central Veterinary Teaching Hospital (CVH) Central Artificial Insemination Laboratory, Savar Govt. Poultry farm
Timing at Bangladesh Milk Producer’s Co-operative Union Ltd. Is incorrect due to heavy rain fall and flood we could not get chance to visit bathan.Lack of grouping.Limited access in small animal operation theatre in CVH due to large number of interne students.Duration in CVH is more than required.
Conclusion:It was very adventurous and enjoyable for me to do internship in different corner and organization of my country. I have achieved a lot of knowledge and experience on veterinary field of Bangladesh. I trained up myself to adopt in different environment and working place. I believe it will help me in my future career development. It was a pre-job training for me.
