This was to be given out at the Eighth International Conference of Societies of Surgeons in Nepal at the end of November 2008. I arrived on Thursday 27th November and was hosted by the Society of Surgeons, Nepal. The Dr Orano Oration was awarded on Friday 28th November and my inaugural lecture covered the work of Primary Trauma Care in Nepal, in South Asia generally and across the world. The Surgical Conference involved workshops and lectures on different surgical topics from countries including Nepal, Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. Dr Rajesh Gongal and Prof. Pradeep Vaidya (standing R and L of me in picture) have been key players in the expansion of PTC in Nepal, and I am indebted to them and others for their work in PTC Nepal. I had visited Nepal in 1999 to talk about PTC, but the PTC courses were started by Charlie Collins and Bruce Lister in 2003, and since then over 800 doctors have been trained in PTC across Nepal in 20 centres. During this conference a very succinct presentation of PTC in Nepal was given by Dr S Rupakheti (bottom R of picture) showing how PTC had expanded over the years since it started in 2003. Pakistan On Saturday 29th November I flew to Karachi where I met Professor Saeed Minhas and had dinner with him and several members of the PTC Karachi family. On Sunday I flew to Islamabad in preparation for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Minister of Health and Pakistan and myself as representative PTC Head Office in Oxford. On Monday 1st December at the Ministry of Health Buildings in Islamabad we signed the MOU with the Minister of Health witnessed by Primary Trauma Care representatives from all provinces in Pakistan including the Military as well as representatives from the World Health Organisation and several NGO charities involved in Trauma. Professor Rashid Jooma, the Head of PTC in Pakistan is now the Director General of Health in Pakistan, introduced different aspects of trauma in Pakistan after I had given a brief overview of PTC worldwide and then Prof Saeed Minhas gave a review of PTC in Pakistan.

REPORT OF THE NEPAL/PAKISTAN VISIT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2008(Signing of MOU with the Ministry of Health for Pakistan and Sri Lanka)

Kathmandu - NepalIn June of 2008 I was tremendously privileged to be asked to receive an Oration from the Nepal Society of Surgeons for the work of PTC in Nepal. This was to be given out at the Eighth International Conference of Societies of Surgeons in Nepal at the end of November 2008.I arrived on Thursday 27th November and was hosted by the Society of Surgeons, Nepal. I had visited Nepal in 1999 to talk about PTC, but the PTC courses were started by Charlie Collins and Bruce Lister in 2003, and since then over 800 doctors have been trained in PTC across Nepal in 20 centres.During this conference a very succinct presentation of PTC in Nepal was given by Dr S Rupakheti (bottom R of picture) showing how PTC had expanded over the years since it started in 2003.

After the successful signing and exchanging of the documents I was fortunate enough to then meet Professor Jooma’s Office with the different representatives of PTC in Pakistan including (Left to Right in picture below)Dr Shabir Lahri - PTC Quetta Balochistan Province Dr Mehmood Aurangzeb - PTC Peshawar NWFP

The significance of this MOU between the Minister of Health in Pakistan and PTC has not been lost to PTC or the country or Pakistan. This joint collaboration with PTC and the Ministry involves increased support for Primary Trauma Care in Pakistan, as well as raising the profile or trauma in that country. As we are well aware, Pakistan has a huge population and in the present crisis is in desperate need of pro-active trauma management and care nationally. By meeting with the World Health Organisation, the military and representatives of Primary Trauma Care in each of the province in Pakistan, I am hopeful that this collaboration would extend and improve trauma care nationally.PTC in Pakistan would not have succeeded without Dr John Beavis and Sir Terence English drive and vision, which enrolled visionaries such as Prof Rashid Jooma and Prof Saeed Minhas.

Sri LankaFollowing the signing I flew via Dubai to Colombo for the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Minister of Health in Sri Lanka in Colombo and PTC.

Summary of the ConferenceJames de Courcy Where have we come? Looking back at the conference in Lahore 2 years ago, which was attended by many of those who were at this conference, and reviewing the developments since then. In Sri Lanka it has been a joy to see how things have developed from the first course in Colombo, moving to the present situation with 2000 doctors trained and exposure and expertise in trauma management having now become widespread throughout the medical community of the nation.
