Girls’ Home Report: November 2015
November has been full of fun for all the girls, and many guests have visited the Girls’ Home. Along with them they had brought many gifts for the girls such as dolls and accessories, which the girls were highly excited about. The girls have also celebrated Diwali, the festival of lights, with their beloved Lisbeth aunty (Founder of LBH). A three-‐day exposure trip to Maithan Dam had also been arranged. The girls had a great experience going on a shopping trip sponsored by Kolkata Ladies Circle. They visited Eco-‐Park with LBH sponsor Karina Lind and her family. Karina also gifted each of the girls a book with collages of pictures of the girls and boys from previous visits. The girls loved seeing their own photos in the book. Have any new girls joined? Two new girls have joined the Girls’ Home family during November.
Swasthi comes from a broken family. She lived with her father and her younger brother at Dumdum Railway Station. Two years ago her mother married another man abandoning her husband and children despite Swasthi’s father attempt to convince her to take Swasthi with her.
Her father’s main occupation is rickshaw pulling and sometimes he sells tea at Dumdum Station. Her father is usually busy with his work and away from the station area for many hours. During this time Swasthi and her younger brother used to wander around the platforms and beg money
from passengers for their survival.

Nibedita is from a family with a very poor socioeconomic status. Nibedita was living with her father and grandmother before joining Girls’ Home. A few years ago her mother abandoned them, taking Nibedita’s younger sister with her and they have not heard from her since. Her grandmother has different health problems due to her old age and her father is also sick and therefore not able to bear the basic living expenses of the family. Her father’s elder brother gave support to the family over a period of time, but could no longer continue to do so, as he had to look after his own family. Nibedita’s aunt contacted LBH regarding Nibedita.
General Description: After the Durga puja festival towards the end of last month and the girls’ visits to their homes they were just about to adjust with their daily schedules in November and then the Diwali festival came.
