Paws & Claws Cat Club In May, we participated in the Community Fair. Two Little Orphan Kittens, Winnie and Thumbelina, were a huge attraction. Members accepted donations for our service project, which helps with the spaying and neutering of kittens. At our May 11 meeting, we celebrated everyone’s birthday. Members decorated cupcakes and colored cat and birthday cake pages. Two more kittens, Hansel and Gretel, were our guests. Each received loving attention from everyone. We also welcomed our new member, Sadie Kimberlin. Our June 8 meeting will be a Cat Clinic with Christy Eastwood to prepare for the Cat Show at the Boone County Fair. Members must attend if they plan to show their cat this year. Cats in carriers, with a leash and harness, are welcome to come along to the June meeting.

KEEP CALM AND COOK ON GROUP Although we’ve had our final meeting of the year, that doesn’t mean you have to stop cooking and baking! You’ve learned and practiced a lot of culi-nary skills, and hopefully you are more confident in the kitchen. Remember to be safe, especially when using a knife or the oven. Ask for assistance when needed. Ranch dip tastes good on raw veggies, but unfortunately, most brands are made with some arti-ficial ingredients. You can make your own by keep-ing this easy recipe on hand for summertime:

Homemade Ranch Seasoning Mix from gimmesomeoven.com

1/3 c dry buttermilk 2 Tbsp dried parsley 1 ½ tsp dried dill weed 2 tsp garlic powder 2 tsp onion powder 2 tsp dried onion flakes 1 tsp ground black pepper 1 tsp dried chives 1 tsp salt

Mix all ingredients together or pulse in food proces-sor to desired consistency. Store in an airtight con-tainer in the fridge for up to 3 months. Mix a little at a time with Greek yogurt and/or sour cream until you get the desired flavor. For recipes using ranch mix: 3 Tbsp.=1 packet of store-bought seasoning mix.

CLOVERBUDS

The Cloverbuds had lots of fun creating their own helping hand notebook during our last meeting! Be on the lookout for our next meeting date, which will be in September. Also, we will not be having the Clover-bud day camp this year; however, feel free to make a project and submit into the Cloverbud Corner at the

county fair!

How Do I Enter My 4-H Project

in the Boone County Fair?

Who is eligible to enter 4-H projects in the Boone County Fair? You must be an enrolled Boone County 4-H member as of June 1st of the current year to

enter projects in the Boone County Fair. Watch the 4-H newsletter to see when 4-H fair passes will be available. You will need these passes to enter the fairgrounds

free of charge and to register your fair entries.

What 4-H projects may I enter in the fair? Eligible projects are ones made after the fair last year. The Boone County Fair catalog explains what categories and units you may enter. Check the overall 4-H rules as well as the rules for each specific division. If you need clarification call, 586-6101 to speak to a 4-H representative.

How do I enter my 4-H project in the Boone County Fair? Entries will be taken in the Lutes Floral Hall on the fairgrounds on Monday, August 8, from 11 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (crops, fruits & vegetables, & honey are entered a different day/time—see fair catalog). No projects will be accepted after 4:00 p.m.

How are my 4-H projects judged? In 4-H, we use the Danish System of judging. In this system, each exhibitor is recognized for his or her efforts and accomplishments. Each exhibit is considered in comparison with the ideal and is evaluated and awarded a ribbon as follows: Blue means excellent, Red means good, and White means

fair. Thus, each entry is accorded a rating based on how it compares to the ideal or standard, not in competition or comparison with other entries. After all individual ribbons are awarded, the individual

Comparison System is used to consider each blue ribbon entry in comparison with other blue ribbon entries. From that group, first, second and third place winners are determined. Entries qualifying for State Fair will have a sticker displayed on their ribbon. Please note that State Fair rules determine what each county is allowed to bring as entries. You may contact the extension office at 586-6101 for more details. Please be aware that some categories are county level only and do not advance to the State Fair.

Educational programs of Kentucky Cooperative Extension serve all people regardless of race, color, age,

of Agriculture, and Kentucky Counties, Cooperating. Disabilities accommodated with prior notification.

Page 11: Reply to: Extension Service 4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT ...boone.ca.uky.edu/files/6_june_4-h_news_for_web.pdf · receive $1,000 from The Allstate Foundation in honor of Allstate Agent Rebecca

are unsure, please check with Steve Conrad to make sure 4-H has everything necessary for your project. When will I get my State Fair items back? State Fair projects should be available for pick-up at the extension office on Tuesday, August 30. Office hours are from 8:00 a.m-5:30 p.m, Monday through Friday. Items will be held until September 30. After that date they will be discarded. How do I collect my prize premiums? Prizes receiving first, second, or third place are awarded money. If you have prize money coming, you may collect your check from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 14, at the Lents Building/ Fair office, the small green building straight back from the front gates. After Sunday,

checks may be collected at the extension office.

What happens with the 4-H projects after they are judged? Once items are judged they will be arranged in a display. All entries will remain on display in Cloverville during the fair week. When do I get my 4-H projects back? All items, except those selected to go to the state fair, must be picked up in Cloverville located in the Lutes Floral Hall on Sunday, August 14, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. If you cannot pick up your project on that day, ask a friend or relative to do so for you. Projects not picked will be taken to the extension office and held until September 30; they will be discarded after that date. My 4-H project is going to the State Fair...what do I need to do? Nothing really, unless you have a food item. You should prepare a duplicate item and bring it to Cloverville at the fairgrounds on Sunday, August 14 by 3:00 p.m. Those items and all the other State Fair bound entries will be boxed-up by 4-H staff and taken to Louisville. Your entry may be required to have additional paperwork. If you
