Welcome

Welcome to the Whitlock Energy Collaboration Centre*, one of Scotland’s newest education, research and training resources dedicated to supporting the growth of the Renewable Energy Sector and its associated supply chain.

The Whitlock Energy Collaboration Centre is the focus of Carnegie College’s renewable energy aspirations and sits at the hub of our growing engineering and technology facility based in Rosyth.

Our investment, thanks to the benevolence of Robert M Buchan and the foresight of Colin Whitlock, reflects Carnegie College’s commitment to developing the future skills and knowledge that will be required in order to secure long-term employment and sustainable economic growth.

At Carnegie College we recognise the tremendous opportunities as the energy sector continues to go through a phase of unprecedented growth and development. The achievement of Scotland’s carbon targets will involve investment in renewable technologies, requiring early intervention and collaborative working for the creation of a skilled workforce, innovation and knowledge transfer.

Our vision is to ‘engineer a sustainable energy future’ and the Whitlock Energy Collaboration Centre aims to:

1. Provide learning, training, skills development and associated educational services for and about the energy industry with a particular focus on sustainability.

2. Promote collaboration for learning and knowledge transfer between the key providers, consumers

and developers of sustainable energy resources.

3. Provide opportunities for interactive laboratory demonstration facilities for emerging energy technologies.

4. Contribute to the effective adoption and utilisation of sustainable energy sources through conferencing, seminars, consultancy, applied research and development.

The Centre, which has a local, national and international perspective, promotes sustainable energy solutions through people and design. Innovation in its widest sense will be encouraged and supported through all creative and problem solving activities.

Entrepreneurship and enterprise are fundamental to our delivery of a sustainable future, whilst our focus on people and design will ensure that technology does not become an end in itself but rather an enabler for sustainability.

Jim Brown, Head of Centre,The Whitlock Energy Collaboration Centre.

*The Whitlock Energy Collaboration Centre was established in September 2010 with a $1 million donation from Robert M Buchan in honour of Colin and René Whitlock from Limekilns, who had a major influence on his life.

Facilities

At Carnegie College we believe our customers thrive on exciting, dynamic and supportive environments that mirror the modern day work place.

That is why, together with the $1 million establishment of The Whitlock Energy Collaboration Centre, we have invested over £4m in our campus facilities over the last few years, including a major refurbishment and expansion programme carried out in the summer of 2010.

Our Rosyth campus is now believed to be amongst the largest and best equipped of its type in Scotland, and provides approximately 10,000 square metres of purpose-built training facilities.

Below is a brief overview of the many facilities that our customers and students will experience with us:

Rosyth Main CampusThe Energy LabA key element of The Whitlock Energy Collaboration Centre, the Energy Lab features demonstration models of the latest low carbon and renewable energy technologies. This dedicated area is designed as both an exhibition space and a learning facility to further enhance the skills and knowledge of students, employers, school pupils and other stakeholders in the energy sector.

The Electrical WorkshopIn an area that is large enough to park 45 double decker buses, the Electrical Workshop has six individual learning zones and a range of skills labs, providing training in domestic electrical engineering through to fibre optics, high voltage and marine electrical engineering.

The Mechanical WorkshopOur Mechanical Workshop hosts an impressive range of manual and computer controlled technology, providing the most up-to-date milling, turning, and CNC training. It is also home to a state-of-the-art pumping rig, where students are trained to industry standards in the safe working of electrical and mechanical pipe systems, providing a superb learning experience in team working and complex problem-solving in an industrial rig.

The Mechanical Analysis Lab This purpose-built laboratory is equipped with a variety of high technology, bespoke resources providing hands-on, practical training in subjects such as the analysis and design of structure elements. The components of the lab have been designed and developed specifically in support of our key sectors.

The Fabrication and Welding WorkshopWith 48 fully-equipped welding bays and the latest industry equipment as standard, this extensive workshop is one of the largest welder training facilities in Scotland. In an area larger than a football pitch, students develop the latest techniques in welding and fabrication processes from basic skills through to advanced coding.

Robert Purvis HouseIn 2010, Carnegie College acquired the former fire station in Rosyth, and established a new dedicated training centre for the provision of Health & Safety Skills training. A key feature of this facility is its 16 metre tower, from which we deliver our Working at Heights courses.

The Punler Centre: CAD EngineeringIn response to a growing demand for knowledge workers in the field of engineering and multi-media, The Punler Centre was established in 2010 to provide a dedicated facility for the delivery of training in Computer Aided Draughting, Rapid Prototyping and Design Engineering.

We would be pleased to welcome you to our Rosyth campus to see first hand the facilities we have on offer. To arrange a visit please contact our Head of Centre Jim Brown on 0844 248 0115.

Working Together

The Renewable Energy industry offers a very exciting prospect for both business and the Scottish economy for many years to come. However, like any ‘new’ industry it requires a number of preconditions to be met such as infrastructure, a skilled workforce and access to resources. Even when these are met, the fledgling industry requires a ‘supply chain’ of supporting businesses providing a range of components and services.

At Carnegie College we are proud to be at the forefront in the delivery of the education and skills required to support this critical economic sector, and we are committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure that the current and future needs of the industry are met.

Collaboration The Whitlock Energy Collaboration Centre provides a facility and a service which allows key businesses in the Renewable Energy supply chain to come together to consider, discuss and move forward on issues relating to the future of the industry. The Centre offers a supportive environment within which collaboration can take place on areas of mutual interest for knowledge transfer, infrastructure and skills, technological advances, energy generation, energy transmission and distribution, energy utilisation, environmental impact and energy consumption.

This is a very exciting part of the work of the Whitlock Energy Collaboration Centre and one which can be central to maximising the benefit of the Renewable Energy sector.
