NOTES FROM THE CO -ARTISTIC D IRECTOR , M AR IE KOHLER

Before she was a prize-winning playwright, Charlayne Woodard was a successful actress living in New York City, where she received a Tony for her performance in AIN’T MISBEHAVIN’, among many theatrical accomplishments. But when she moved to Los Angeles, Woodard found herself less than satisfied with acting opportunities. She took inspiration from a quote by Maya Angelou, however: “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, then change the way you think about it.” The

Angelou quote inspired her to “stop complaining”. Instead, Woodard says, she started “telling stories” to her friends. “The result was my first play, PRETTY FIRE, and it changed my life.”

A one-woman play performed by Woodard, PRETTY FIRE was produced in Los Angeles and received the LA Drama Critics and NAACP awards for best play and best playwright. It went on to be produced at prestigious theaters across the country.

One day as she was performing PRETTY FIRE, the actress/playwright remembers thinking, “This is absolute madness… never again.” Talking with her director, she shared the story of her Aunt Neat who had moved north from Savannah to live with her family. His reaction: “That’s the play I want you to write... We’ll workshop it next spring.” Woodard began exploring her memories and after a few months, called her director, saying, “I’ve got the story. It’s called NEAT and I know the four actors I’ll need for the workshop: Angela Basset, Mary Alice –”. He cut her off with “Charlayne, not four actors, only you. You’re the only one who does what you do.”

That’s how Woodard’s second play, NEAT came into being. Developed at Seattle Repertory Theatre, it was produced there as well as the Manhattan Theatre Club and Mark Taper Forum. Along the way it garnered the Irving and Blanche Laurie Theatre Vision Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination.

Woodard’s third solo play, IN REAL LIFE earned nominations for Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards and won a NAACP award for best playwright and actor.

Trained at the Goodman School of Drama in Chicago, Woodard is a member of The Actor’s Studio in New York City. She has performed in multiple films (“The Crucible” and “Lackawanna Blues” among them) and television.

Judging from her rich artistic life, Ms. Woodard, it would seem, is a Renaissance woman. The message of regeneration inspiring NEAT (and the Maya Angelou quote) is close to the one that inspired the founding of Renaissance Theaterworks -- one reason we are particularly happy to present NEAT to you today. The play is also a jewel-box for the many shining gifts of Marti Gobel (whom many of you may remember from our production of CRUMBS FROM THE TABLE OF JOY). We are so pleased to showcase her artistry and craftsmanship in this lovely play. We are also proud to offer this production as our latest installation in our continuing Diversity Series. We hope you enjoy NEAT as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you.

GREEN ROOM GROUP — NEW LEVELS AND BENEF ITS ! ! !

When our individual donors contribute $1,000 or more annually, they become members of this fun, exclusive group. Yes, it takes some “green stuff” to join, but the Green Room is the place to be. Historically, the Green Room was where the actors waited before going on to perform, the insider’s lounge, if you will - simply a room painted green. The RTW Green Room is a metaphorical rather than a literal place, made “green” by its members’ pledges of support.

As a Green Room Group member you can make a huge difference in the success of RTW by enabling us to hire the finest actors and directors who bring us extraordinary, sold-out performances. There are more benefits to Green Room Group membership including special invitations to exclusive events. If you appreciate the work we do and want to become a part of it, now is the time to be a major contributor.
