The remote access server is a Windows Virtual Server 2005 environment. Virtual machine technology enables customers to run multiple operating systems concurrently on a single physical server. Virtual Server 2005 is a Microsoft product, requiring the Internet Explorer browser. ActiveX is also required.

The environment is configured to allow one user to log into a virtual server environment for a period of four hours. During that time, the assigned labs must be completed and the environment reset. Access is controlled by the local server, and all userIDs are granted access according to their four hour blocks of time only. Once in the virtual environment, users are able to log on as administrator with a password of 2003.

Turning on and off a virtual machine can only be done through the Virtual Server Web Management Console located at http://160.227.130.31:1024 or http://160.227.130.32:1024. However, two methods are available to access the servers once they are powered on: 1) through the virtual environment Virtual Server Web Management Console or 2) via the VMRC utility after the servers are turned on at the Web Management interface, see below.

Each user has been assigned to either server01 or server02. Each user’s server and their timeslots are posted in the WebCT calendar. Log into your server with the login id you requested on your lab surveys. Server01 is 160.227.130.31:1024 and server02 is 160.227.130.32:1024. Your temporary password is password. YOU MUST CHANGE THE PASSWORD THE FIRST TIME YOU LOGIN.

Only two of the three servers can run at the same time. Choose either two Server 2003 sessions or one XP and one server 2003 session.

A utilities CD exists on the Remote Servers. It will contain all the tools for the course, as well as Operating System files.

ALWAYS ENSURE THE SERVER IS TURNED OFF BEFORE YOU START. OTHERWISE, YOU ARE IN SOMEONE'S SESSION. TO TURN OFF, SEE PAGE 11.

There are two ways to access the servers. I. Virtual Server Web Management Console at http://160.227.130.31:1024 or http://160.227.130.32:1024.

Put your cursor over the server to be activated and select ‘Turn On’.

Turn On

Once the server is started, click on Remote Control.

The virtual environment is active when the standard Windows welcome screen appears. a. Instead of Ctrl-Alt-Delete, the special keys are Host (RightAlt)+Del b. Ensure your cursor in placed inside the virtual window.

To switch to another server, click on master status.

II. ACCESS via VMRCDownload and execute VMRC code on the workstation http://www.cuyamaca.net/gainswor/security/vmrc.exe. Virtual Server 2005 includes the Virtual Machine Remote Control (VMRC) client. VMRC connects to an instance of Virtual Server and provides access to its virtual machines. Through VMRC, you can use a virtual machine as if you were using it through the Administration Website. However, VMRC does not allow a user to power on and power off a virtual machine. 4. Contained in your environment is a Windows XP client and two Server 2003. Use the Server 2003 Primary and the Windows XP Pro.

c. Double click on the desired virtual computer

5.Once the computer starts the standard Windows welcome screen appears. Remember you are in the virtual environment and several keyboard shortcuts are different.

d. Instead of Ctrl-Alt-Delete, the special keys are Host (RightAlt)+Del e. Click on Remote Control Access for additional navigation tools.

8. Once the labs are completed, or at the end the allotted timeslot, shut down the servers using the Virtual Web Management Console.

RESET THE ENVIRONMENT a. Access the Virtual Server Web Administration page from your local machine, at

http://160.227.130.31:1024 or http://160.227.130.32:1024.b. Chose ‘Turn off virtual machine and choose Undo Disks”.
