M-7023Zinc Plating with Trivalent Chromium Conversion Coating And a Topcoat Sealant1. General Statements1.1 Introduction

This specification describes the basic requirements of electroplated zinc coatings on iron or steel substrates having a zinc trivalent chromium conversion coating with a special “topcoat sealant” for increased “white rust” corrosion protection.

All steel parts which have this specification applied to them and have a hardness value above the equivalent of “Rockwell C” (HRC) of 32, or which have been heavily stressed from cold work will be subject to hydrogen absorption and hydrogen embrittlement from the electroplating process. Unless otherwise specified on the drawing, this absorption condition is to be relieved by a baking the parts within one hour after the plating process, but before any “topcoat sealant” application. Unless otherwise specified, hardened parts tempered at temperatures above 200o C. shall be baked for 4 hours at 200o C. And similarly, hardened parts which have been tempered at temperatures less than 175o C. shall be baked at 150o C. for 8 hours.

2. Allowable EquivalentsThe following equivalent materials may be used to fulfill this Specification. One or more of the following methods may be used to specify materials, but do not duplicate information between methods.2.1 Existing industry specifications:

4. Performance and Durability Tests M-7023Test requirements for all equivalent materials:

Test Procedure Requirement

Electro-plated zinc with a surface trivalent chromate conversion coating and a special “topcoat sealant”.

ASTM B487ASTM A754

ISO 1463ISO2178

Unless otherwise specified on the engineering drawing, the part shall have a minimum zinc electroplating thickness of 8 um. The thickness of the plated finish shall be determined by microscopic examination of cross-sections taken perpendicular to the significant surfaces.

The maximum coating thickness applied to threads on threaded products is limited by the basic thread size and tolerance. After coating these parts must pass the appropriate thread “go” gages

.Unless otherwise specified on the engineering drawing, the part shall exhibit no “white corrosion products” on the plated surface after being exposed to a “salt spray fog” environment

ASTM B-117 Salt Spray (Fog)

Test120 hours minimum

Unless otherwise specified on the engineering drawing, the part shall exhibit no “red corrosion products” on the plated surface after being exposed to a “salt spray fog” environment

ASTM B-117 Salt Spray (Fog) Test

240 hours minimum

Parts subject to 220o C. for 30 minutes and quenched in room temperature water

No evidence of ‘blistering’ or ‘flaking’ of the plating.

5. Other requirements5.1 Other requirements

Must be clean and free of grease before plating Clear appearance
