Outstanding Student Achievement

At Monday’s assembly, we were again able to highlight the amazing talent of our students. Children were recognised for their great results in ICAS English and the Maths Olympiad. Children were also able to share the creative and award winning entries by our Years 5 and 6 students in the Name our Antarctic Icebreaker competition. Finally, the whole assembly watched 4CTs winning entry in the Screen It animation competition. This assembly demonstrated again that our children are so creative, hardworking and talented, that we should be very proud of their achievements.

ArtSEL 2018 - Building Resilience

At Essex Heights, we are very conscious of our responsibility to prepare our children to be confident and self-aware young people as they make their way from our school and move on to secondary school, ready to take their place in an increasingly complex society. Responding to this challenge is a primary reason that we are implementing the ArtSEL program for all students in 2018. We believe that by engaging children in discussion on these topics we are developing their skills and awareness as well as building a common language between us all.

I am often involved in discussions with parents about what they can do to build resilience in their children. I would like to share an article with you by Michael Grose, founder of Parenting Ideas and a leading parenting author. His latest book ‘Spoonfed Generation’ is an excellent book for advice on how to raise independent children.

How independence-building is the pathway to your child’s resilience

Parents and teachers often ask me how to build resilience in kids.

My response is always the same: “Start by building independence and resilience will follow.” Here is how.

Children are hardwired for independence. Sometime around the age of fifteen months, give or take three months, most children will make a strong case for self-sufficiency. They demand to do things their own way. This demand is soon backed by a strong voice – “NOOOO!” – and then more articulate cries of “I can do it!” as their third birthday approaches.

This is the time to harness your child's push for independence and self-sufficiency. Their desire for independence and mastery over their immediate environment will see most children take incredible physical risks in the form of play and exploration of that environment. Concerned parents will naturally minimise risks by moving furniture around, keeping doors closed and hiding sharp implements, to name a few protective measures.

However, parents cannot eradicate all risks. Kids will fall and hurt themselves ... but they will also get up and go again. In time, they will learn to assess situations, stare down their fears and test themselves out in new situations. Falling down, brushing yourself off and trying again is part of the natural learning experience for most young children. Parents do not have to do much more than assess a situation for real dangers, then stand back and allow their kids to explore their environments, pulling them up only when their play and explorations transgress the rights and peace of others.

So what does this have to do with resilience? Well, everything really. Independence is the pursuit of mastery over one’s self and one’s environment and rarely happens without mishaps and mistakes. It nearly always involves hurt, hardship, frustration and fear. That’s where resilience comes in. Resilience is the art of bouncing forward after experiencing these hurts, hardships, frustrations and fears. Resilience is what comes from seeking out self-sufficiency and independence.

The language of independence The fact that there is a whole genre of language devoted to resilience (mostly cloaked in cliché) is no accident. Terms such as “Get back on the bike/horse when you fall off”, “Come on, brush yourself off and get on with it” or “What doesn’t kill you makes you strong” are built into the pyche of past generations. Many parents today will cringe at these terms, as they appear a little callous and out of touch. Conversely most current parents' relationship with risk and adventure – both required for independence-building – is very tenuous at best, non-existent at worst.

Therein lies the challenge. I have not met a parent, carer or teacher who doesn’t want the children in their care to develop resilience that will last a lifetime. Yet many of those same adults will block the pathway to children’s resilience by over-indulging them, solving their problems and not giving them real responsibility. In doing so they deny kids the sense of mastery that comes from sorting out their own problems, getting themselves out of jams and getting up after a fall.

You can never love your children too much, but you can love them helplessly. That’s what happens when we deny kids the opportunity to become truly independent and self-sufficient. Deny self-sufficiency and you block a child’s resilience. Develop real independence and you open a pathway to resilience that will last a lifetime.

As our school’s Parents Victoria representative, I was pleased to be able to attend their annual conference recently and appreciated being able to hear some wonderful speakers and meet other parents and teachers from around the state.

The conference was held over two days and covered a range of topics. Mark McKeon highlighted the importance of kvnowing people on the teams in which we are involved, whether the PFA, School Council, or other groups. The personality style, DISC was illustrated and discussed.

There was a presentation on the pilot Doctors in Secondary Schools program being trialled at present. The concept of Parent Ambassadors through the Schools and Community Hub Australia Partnership was explained and illustrated. Reconciliation Action Plans being implemented in schools throughout Australia relating to our indigenous community was explained. The remodelled Technical School System was also outlined.

The importance of schools and families working together was a major thread. Several areas were explored, from navigating relationships through complaint processes, exploring elements of respective relationships through to the importance of schools engagement with parents. It was stressed that when parents are engaged, students are more like to be motivated, have higher grades, better behavioural and social skills, and continue to higher education.

Please contact me via the PFA at [email protected] if you are interested in receiving further information as I have available numerous handouts on these valuable topics.

Some take home reminders:

“The biggest communication problem is we do not listen to understand. We listen to reply.” Stephen Covey: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

“When parents are engaged and involved, everyone benefits, and our schools become increasingly rich and positive places to teach, learn and grow.” Parents in Partnership: A Parent Engagement Policy for Ontario Schools, 2010

Prep M were lucky enough to have Nicole and Georgia (Olivia’s Mum and little sister) come in last Thursday, 9th November, to share about her experience as a florist, her role as a teacher at a flower school, her visits to various flower farms, and her general love of flowers!!

The children were so excited and bursting with questions and comments, many of them (including myself) not knowing much about flower farms in particular. Nicole shared photos on her iPad, which bought it more to life for all of us. It was wonderful to learn about a type of farm that we don’t hear much about.

Nicole bought along boxes full of beautiful cut carnations and the children created their own arrangement … from the focused expressions, every single one of them put a lot of thought into their arrangement. Then Nicole gave them each a long stemmed carnation as a present.

What a fun, interesting and colourful way to finish a Thursday!! Thank you Nicole and Georgia! Everyone’s homes were a little bit more bright because of you.

The Prep students visited Edendale Community Environment Farm in Eltham on Monday. The weather was fabulous, and it was a wonderful day of plants, vegetables and fruit, worms, getting creative with flowers, and lots of livestock - sheep, goats, George the turkey, chickens and Ava the cow. A brilliant day of learning and sunshine!
