 Remembering “Freedom Summer” Multimedia High School Journalism Workshop At The University of Southern Mississippi 2014 The University of Southern Mississippi School of Mass Communication and Journalism invites applications from Mississippi high school students for the Remembering “Freedom Summer” High School Journalism Workshop, which will be held on the USM campus in Hattiesburg June 15-22, 2014 Application Deadline: Postmarked by May 10. Only complete applications will be considered. Details: Students will learn how to report the news using a variety of multimedia tools, including print,  photos, video s, broadcast, radio , and social med ia. They will learn from local journ alists and USM faculty how to cover the news. They’ll produce TV and radio newscasts, a newspaper and a Web site. They will cover the 50 th  anniversary of “Freedom Summer,” which commemorates a massive voter registration drive for African Americans in 1964. Who is eligible: Mississippi high school students currently enrolled in 10 th , 11 th , or 12 th  grades. Participants should have an interest in journalism, but prior experience with journalism is not required. Fees: The workshop is free to students, thanks to the generous support of the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund, the Mississippi Press Association, and Raycom Media. Include a letter of recommendation from someone who knows you well – preferably a teacher  – that describes your potential t o succeed at this workshop and y our potential as a journalist. 4. A sample of your work. This could be a newspaper article you wrote for the student paper, a  photo essay o r video you prod uced, or an essay yo u wrote for class. Fo r multimedi a, please supply a link to the video (on YouTube, for example) or provide it on a CD or DVD. Samples will not be returned. Work samples DO NOT need to be published. 5.
