Our Ideals

Just as the 5Cs (Courtesy, Charm, Character, Calm, Cuisine) define our

Quality Charter, we have identified Five Ideals that capture the essential

spirit of Relais & Châteaux.

These Ideals have been beneath the surface of our Association since its

inception.

“The Relais & Châteaux Art de Vivre is all about discerning what can’t be

seen, but felt. »

Michel Guérard – Les Prés d’Eugénie (France)

FELLOWSHIP

To be a member of Relais &

Châteaux, one must have a

certain character and spirit that

stands behind and enlivens the

quality of the hotel or restaurant.

And one must want to be among

others who share these passions.

This is the Ideal of Fellowship. As

different as we may be from one

another, we recognise in each of

us the true spirit of hospitality, the

spirit of Relais & Châteaux.

PERSONAL GENEROSITY

As we continually tell and re-tell

our story, the heart and soul of

Relais & Châteaux must always

emanate from what some call th

Soul of the Innkeeper.

“Innkeeper“ is a somewhat old-

fashined term but we embrace it

as a symbol of the personal touch

that is in danger of being lost in

our time. A Relais & Châteaux

innkeeper is one whose life is

inseparable from their hotel or

restaurant, who behaves with

generosity in sharing what they

do with others and who inspires

staff to embody passion,

generosity and pride to the same

extent.

SENSE OF PLACE

Relais & Châteaux is about

people and it is about places.

Most distinctively and most

crucially it is about people in

places. The third Ideal of our

association ensures that the

people who come together in

such places fully appreciate

where they are. Our places in the

world celebrate where they are,

so that those who arrive know

they have been somewhere

special.

HARMONY

The deep yet familiar rituals of

hospitality can awaken the

senses and bring our fill

awareness to a place and to our

companions. Any ordinary

moment can become a true

celebration. But every detail of

service and the environment must

be aligned to a single harmonious

expression, and this Harmony is

our Ideal.

BEING

There is an art to living. It is

perhaps the simpliest to all arts

and the one most difficult to

master. Yet we know that it is the

art that our members, each in

their own unique way, practises.

Their canvas is themselves, their

properties, and the guests who

accept their own lives. Our art de

vivre inspires an Ideal of Being.

Return on Emotion

Relais & Châteaux is known as a unique collection of charming hotels and gourmet

restaurants around the world. But beyond that, Relais & Châteaux is an association that acts

on behalf of the world’s finest chefs and “maîtres de maison” - people who have devoted their

lives to serving and to offering their guests exquisitely crafted experiences. Relais & Châteaux

is neither a corporation nor a chain; it is a family. We are in the service of our members who are

themselves the proprietors of Relais & Châteaux properties. Our fundamental raison d’être

is to promote the success of our member properties by upholding the values and ideals

that we share. No other hospitality organisation in the world can make such a claim.

“Imagine all the Relais & Châteaux as one, a beautiful library comprised of a collection of

Masterpieces united under a singular title “a celebration of living well”, naturally each author

has his own style and tells his own personal story of “living well” in his own way, in his own

natural and cultural surroundings, his tastes, his passions, but always, always from his heart.”

Relais & Châteaux embodies a family spirit

“Dear all,

Many thanks for your welcome during the 36th congress of Relais & Châteaux. It was our first

participation and we were impressed by the quality of your organization.

Also, we appreciated the quality of work done. We will do everything possible to deserve your

trust. It was for us a real enjoyment to discover South Africa and to join the great family of

Relais & Châteaux.”

Le Doge, Casablanca

”Dear President and members of staff,

I have been back from Cape Town for more than a week now and at last I have a minute to

thank you very much for the organization of the International Congress. I would like to express

my special appreciation for all the topics covered during the convention.

I have taken note of the values of the Relais & Châteaux family and I personally undertake to

share them with the entire team of the Relais Santa Croce: let me tell you that we are all very

proud to be a member of Relais & Châteaux!

I can promise you that we will do our very best to be a very active member of the Relais &

Admission

PRESENTATION

The new members are officially presented at the Relais & Châteaux Congress which takes place

every year in November when the international Guide is published.

CENTRAL RESERVATIONS AND OTHER SERVICES PROVIDED BY THE ASSOCIATION

After his admission, the new member can benefit from all services that the Association can provide

including the Central Reservation and Information Office, the gift certificates and special offers, the

website as well as marketing services taking into account the necessary time for training,

configuration and activation of the information in the different systems of the Association and its

subsidiaries.

PROPERTIES WITH MEMBERSHIP IN OTHER ORGANISATIONS

Properties, which are members of a competing marketing organisation, must send us a copy of their

letter of resignation. Membership of the Association excludes membership in any other hotel

marketing organisation. If the membership contracts signed with these organisations provide for a

period of notice before the resignation becomes effective, which means that the property remains a

member of that organisation during the period of notice, the property will nonetheless have the

possibility of becoming a member of Relais & Châteaux. It will use the period of notice to sever all

membership links to these organisations; this period may not, however, exceed two years. (cf.

Rules of Procedure, Article 8, Rule banning dual membership)

25 2012 / 2013 25

Page 26: Relais Chateaux Terms and Conditions 2013

Admission

THE OWNER GROUPS

Relais & Châteaux is an association of independent properties. Nonetheless, some of our member properties belong to owner groups which must

meet stringent terms and conditions*.

* If you wish to have more details on these terms and conditions, you can consult our Rules of Procedure, Duties of the Members, Article 8.

MEMBERSHIP AND QUALITY AUDIT

Within the framework of a regular quality audit of the services provided by the members all member properties of the Association are inspected at

least once every three years. A quarterly review of guest comment forms and the processing

of guest correspondence are additional quality tracking tools. Failure to comply with the quality criteria as established by these different tools and

procedures can result in a decision by the Board of Directors to exclude a member. This decision may also be taken if the different standards laid

down by the Association are not complied with.

FINANCIAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Please refer to the enclosed document for a simulation of your membership fees.
