1. OBJECTIVE

Evaluate by ultrasonic testing (UT) in the crack located in the upper case

of turbine 1

2. DATE OF INSPECTION, PERSONNEL AND EQUIPMENT

Inspection of the unions was held on February 25th 2015 in Colon, Panama

The staff was involved for inspection:

- Eng Cuicas Wisthon, ASNT-TC-1A Level II: VT, PT, MT, and UT.

EQUIPMENT USED:

- Ultrasound Equipment Olympus EPOCH LTX.

- Calibration block IIW Type 1.

- Digital Camera.

- Coupling Gel.

- Tape Measure.

3. PROCEDURE OF INSPECTION

To determine the length of the crack first of all was gotten the vertical

distance to the crack from the bottom of the case, this value was called

X, To get the value of D was assumed Y= 80mm, and the following

equation was obtained:

The actual thickness of the case was determined randomly at certain

points on the right, left, up and down of the nearest area to the crack to

determine the error of the assumed value of Y=80 mm, those values

obtained were the following:

4. INSPECTION RESULTS, ANALYSIS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

During the ultrasound inspection of the crack belonging to the upper

case of the turbine 1, for the detection of the crack on the points UP-12,

UP-13, UP-14, UP-15, UP-16, UP-17, LEFT-1, LEFT-2, LEFT-3, DOWN-14,

DOWN-15, DOWN-16, the gain was needed to be increased in 25Db to

manage to see the crack, otherwise it could have not been detected

anything, which could means that the crack is extremely thin at these

points, but due to the high gain it is difficult to know for sure.
