Works have commenced on the new Reid Highway Upgrade after Georgiou Group were awarded the design and construct contract, valued at $65 million, in late 2014.The project, which includes works on the Reid Highway/Malaga Drive interchange and widening of Reid Highway between Duffy Road and Marmion Avenue, will significantly improve safety and traffic flow along Reid Highway in Balcatta, Carine and Malaga.

“There are major traffic and safety issues on these sections of Reid Highway. We need to reduce the crash rate and improve efficiency at these critical locations on the network,” said Transport Minister Dean Nalder at the official announcement in December 2014.

“These works will also address the traffic and queuing problems that currently occur on Reid Highway during peak periods and will improve traffic flow on local distributor roads.”

More than 21,200 vehicles a day use Reid Highway west of the freeway towards Marmion Avenue, and more than 30,000 vehicles a day use the highway east of the freeway.Similarly, safety and efficiency at the intersection of Reid Highway and Malaga Drive will be boosted with two new bridges providing four lanes for Reid Highway traffic to flow uninterrupted over Malaga Drive.

This means that the 75,000 vehicles using this intersection each weekday will no longer have to wait for several traffic signal changes at peak periods and will experience better traffic flow in the area.

Construction work has already commenced, with all works due for completion by mid-2016.

The rewards offered by Reinforced Earth® walls utilising full height panels has been realised yet again in Western Australia.

The good geotechnical conditions and the ample amounts of sand available as a good select backfill make it the perfect location for these walls.

The structures can be built completely from behind and therefore will not interfere with access, traffic or obstacles to the front of the wall.

The Reinforced Earth Company was contracted to design and supply two sets of bridge abutments for the Reid Highway Upgrade.

One bridge was installed at the Malaga Drive Interchange, while the other bridge was a duplication of an existing bridge at the Reid Highway/Mitchell Freeway Interchange.

The scope included the design and supply of the precast concrete facing panels and the earth reinforcing straps for the structures, on-site technical and construction advice, and the propping design for the structures during construction.

This propping design is specific to the site constraints and was realised in an area directly adjacent to the live Mitchell Freeway in Perth.

The four lifting points precast into each panel give greater safety during handling and construction.

This, when combined with the customised prop configurations, make the full height panels easy to install.

When finalised, the two bridges will be supported by a total of 1477 sqm of Reinforced Earth® abutment walls using TerraTilt® full height precast concrete panels.

The manufacture of the TerraTilt® precast concrete facing panels was subcontracted to Georgiou Group Pty Ltd, who are also the main contractors on the project.

The panels at Malaga Drive showcase the versatility of the TerraTilt® system with regard to customised architectural finishes. These panels have a hatched pattern embossed into the precast concrete.

The $1 billion dollar Gateway WA Perth Airport and Freight Access Project is the largest infrastructure project ever undertaken by Main Roads WA. Jointly funded by the State and Federal governments, the project is preparing the city for future growth.

The project incorporates road and bridge improvements, local road modifications, facilities and connections for pedestrians and cyclists, noise walls, landscaping, innovative urban design and the use of intelligent transport system technology.

It involves much-needed improvements around Perth Airport as well as the nearby Kewdale and Forrestfield industrial estates, including extra lanes on Tonkin Highway, new interchanges and the upgrade of Leach Highway to an expressway.

The iconic nature of the project demands dynamic design concepts forming a gateway to a themed journey that creates a lasting impression for road users, residents and visitors to Western Australia.

Funding and DeliveryThe project is being jointly funded with the Federal Gov-ernment contributing up to $686.4 million as part of the Regional Infrastructure Fund and Nation Building Pro-gram.

The State Government is contributing $317.5 million. The project is being delivered using an alliance contract where five industry leaders – Leighton Contractors, Georgiou, GHD, AECOM and BG&E – will work in partnership with our State’s road authority, Main Roads WA.The project started in January 2013. The full scope of works is expected to be completed by 2017, ahead of the

planned consolidation of the domestic and international terminals at the Perth Airport.

• Leach Highway/Abernethy Road• Tonkin Highway/Roe Highway• Tonkin Highway/Boud Avenue• Principal shared path network for pedestrians and

cyclists• Local road improvements in the Kewdale precinct• Abernethy Link• Integrated urban design.

BenefitsThe Perth Airport and surrounding areas serve as a major passenger and freight network hub for the Perth metropolitan area. The expected strong growth in passenger numbers at the airport, combined with the planned consolidation of the domestic and international terminals, will add significant additional traffic demand to the southern access to the airport.

Further traffic will be generated by industrial developments in the southern part of the airport and in the surrounding areas of Kewdale and Forrestfield, and from commuter traffic in the eastern and south eastern suburbs of Perth.

The Gateway WA project will reduce congestion and improve access to Perth Airport and surrounding areas. It will cater for future growth in these facilities which are important contributors to the Western Australian economy. The project will also support resource operations in regional areas of the state by improving access to the airport for their fly in fly out workforces.

Project UpdateThe past couple of months have seen major changes occur at the Tonkin Highway / Horrie Miller Drive / Kewdale Road intersection and there are more on the way for road users.

Gateway WA Traffic Operations Manager Travis Hincks said the changes are part of a staged approach to allow the travelling public to use the intersection while construction is underway.

“The Tonkin Highway / Horrie Miller Drive / Kewdale Road intersection is one of the busiest intersections in the area and the biggest challenge for the project’s traffic team is to minimise the impact on road users while work is taking place to build the new interchange safely in the work area available.”

Mr Hincks said the use of variable message signs (VMS) on the ground and the distribution of traffic notices prior to changes taking place aims to provide road users with alternative routes of getting to their destination.

“We appreciate that it can be confusing for road users, especially for people travelling to the Perth Airport who are not normally this side of the city. Our goal is to communicate the changes as early as possible and in as many ways as we can so that people can plan ahead.”

Although there are a number of restrictions imposed at the intersection, there will be further limitations over the next few months at this and other intersections in the project’s zones.

“Thank you to all road users who have complied with the changes so far and have understood the importance of getting this work done. Please keep an eye on the Gateway WA website for further changes to this and the project’s other intersections.”

The Tonkin Highway / Horrie Miller Drive / Kewdale Road interchange will be finished by the end of the year.

Client Department of Main Roads WALocation Maylands, Western Australia Contract Value $4.6 million Start Date April 2014 Completion May 2015

The Seventh Avenue Bridge Project consists of the deconstruction of an existing bridge and the construction of a new four span concrete bridge over the Perth-Midland Railway Line, Railway Parade and Whatley Crescent within the City of Bayswater, Perth.

The contract includes:• Construction of precast concrete retaining walls adjacent

to bridge on ramps• Construction of 130m precast concrete noise barriers • Construction of electrification screens • Construction of on ramps • Installation of road safety barriers, minor road signs and

road pavement markings • Installation of street lighting • Ancillary works including reinstatement of existing

driveways, footpaths and fencing

The Seventh Avenue Bridge:• Is a new $9.3 million bridge replacing a century-old

timber bridge• First phase of a $22 million project to replace bridges in

the area• Construction to start on Third Avenue Bridge by the end

of 2015

Transport Minister Dean Nalder officially opened Maylands’ new Seventh Avenue Bridge in May, saying the structure paid tribute to the historical significance of its predecessor. “This new 80-metre bridge, carrying about 3,500 vehicles a day, is built on the same footprint as the original 1913 timber bridge,” Mr Nalder said. “The old bridge served us well for more than 100 years.” The former bridge was a distinctive wooden structure, taking traffic over the railway line between Railway Parade and Whatley Crescent. The wooden theme has been incorporated into the design of the new bridge, particularly

Seventh Avenue BridgeSeventh Avenue Bridge

in the noise walls and the colour scheme on the piers and abutments. The new bridge, designed by GHD for Main Roads WA to meet current safety standards, was built on budget (about $9.3 million) and slightly ahead of schedule by Decmil-OHL.

The Minister said the bridge provided extra clearance over Railway Parade and Whatley Crescent and a wide path for use by cyclists and pedestrians. Main Roads WA involved local community and business groups in selecting public art to support this project. The completed work by artist Jahne Rees showcases timbers from the former bridge and will create a meeting place and talking point for local people. “This artwork recognises the bridge’s heritage significance and honours the role it has played in moving vehicles and people across the rail line for almost a century,” Mr Nalder said. The Seventh Avenue Bridge contract is the first phase of a $22 million project that includes the replacement of the nearby Third Avenue Bridge in Mount Lawley.

Fast Facts• The next bridge to be replaced is Third Avenue bridge

which carries about 10,000 cars per weekday• A contract will be awarded in late 2015, with demolition

and construction expected to take eight months

Midland, in Perth’s eastern suburbs, has been undergoing intense urban renewal since 2000 to strengthen its role as a strategic metropolitan centre.

A major part of this revitalisation is the new St John of God Midland Public Hospital, currently under construction and due to open in November 2015.

The hospital site is currently separated from the Midland town centre by the main freight rail line servicing Perth, with access via a signalised level crossing.

To service this new development it is necessary to grade-separate the existing freight rail line which crosses Lloyd Street by building a road underpass. This involves building three bridges over Lloyd Street to allow direct access from Cowie Close into the new hospital and cater for emergency services, the Public Transport Authority and Brookfield’s rail infrastructure.

The project is funded jointly by the Federal Government, State Government and the City of Swan. Main Roads WA has been appointed to deliver the project on behalf of the Department of Transport and the City of Swan.

Upon completion, this project will facilitate the proposed future extension of Lloyd Street, from Clayton Street south to the Great Eastern Highway bypass (connecting into Abernethy Road), which will ultimately become a new gateway to Midland.

In June 2014, McConnell Dowell was awarded the design and construct contract for the Lloyd Street Rail Corridor Grade Separation project.

Project ScopeThe project scope of works includes:• Design and construction of Lloyd Street in accordance

with the specified lane configuration, including grade separation at Cowie Close and the railway, and at-grade intersections at other connecting roads

• Design and construction of three bridges over Lloyd Street at Cowie Close, the freight railway and the spur railway

• Design and construction of the railway freight lines, spur line and sidings, including temporary diversion of the existing freight railway

• Provision of a continuous grade-separated shared path and footpath along Lloyd Street and other shared paths and footpaths, including connections to the existing network

• Design and construction and/or modifications of all associated drainage, including underground drainage, pumping systems, basins, bath structure drainage and subsoil drainage

• Design and installation of revegetation and landscaping

Although it was originally planned for all bridges to be constructed of pre-cast T-roff beams, this design will now apply to the road bridge only.

During pre-award negotiations to the design and construct contract, McConnell Dowell instead proposed that the twin rail bridges be constructed in-situ with deck construction.

This will allow deck stiffness to be taken up by upstands, increasing the soffit level and allowing the vertical alignment of the road underneath to be raised.

Approval of this design has reduced overall quantities for the project and will create a more visually appealing finish.

External bearing shelves will be constructed on top of the diaphragm walls.

Central support for the bridge decks will be provided by monolithic barrette piers with monolithic connection.

Internal surfaces of the underpass and piers will be clad with architecturally designed pre-cast panels.

The diaphragm walls of the underpass will be held apart by a base slab up to 1m thick, designed to act in compression and to counter the buoyancy effects of being below the water table. Water proofing will be provided by membranes and internal drainage will be directed to a sump. The sump will house a two stage pump system designed to cope with up to a one in 50-year rainfall event.

Construction of the project is complex, involving a large number of stakeholders including utility providers, private rail, public transport, emergency services, local retailers and road users.

Among the challenges presented by infrastructure within the project site are:• Relocation of a DN600 water main• Overhead and underground 132kV transmission lines

that need to be designed and worked around• Relocation of Brookfield Rail’s signaling and

communications infrastructure, including a primary Telstra optic-fiber link between Perth and Adelaide

• A freight rail line that will need to be temporarily diverted onto a new alignment during bridge construction

• The partial closure of Lloyd Street, a busy road connecting traffic between major retail precincts in Midland

McConnell Dowell is confident that working closely with stakeholders and utilising innovative design solutions will overcome these challenges.

When finished, the Lloyd Street Rail Corridor Grade Separation project will significantly improve the flow of traffic through Midland and provide safe and easy access to the new hospital.

It is envisioned that in the future, it will form part of an attractive new gateway into a revitalised Midland.

WITH proven strengths in both large and small construction projects for the infrastructure and resources sector, modern engineering surveying company Alliance Surveying is a leader in its field.

Director/Surveyor Scott Pollard said the company stood out due to its staff who have many years of experience in these projects.

“Our staff have the ability to provide efficient and comprehensive surveying services to our clients,” he said.

Even though the project site is small the Design and Construct project at the Lloyd St Grade Separation project is complex.

McConnell Dowell is completing the project on behalf of Main Roads Western Australia. Construction components includes:

• Installation of Diaphragm walls,(D-Wall) • Two rail slews including signalling and earthworks• Two in-situ rail bridges, • One precast T-Roff road bridge, • In-situ retaining walls• Bulk excavation of the Bath Structure• Drainage, roadworks, concrete bariers, asphalting and

linemarking• Service relocation and installation

“The team at Alliance provides good knowledge and support to every aspect of the project. All aspects of the project required some type of Survey input and with many contractors on site at any given time we were able to assist all contractors on site finish their work within the tight timeframe of the project”

“The rail slew work proved a challenging part of the project, with set timeframes to complete earthworks, signalling and track works multiple tasks were completed simultaneously.

We were able to work with Data Hawk to provide the tamper and Brookfield rail with final track asbuilts using the latest rail trolley technology”

“Another challenging part of the project was the construction of the In-Situ rail bridges. Due to the D-Wall construction process, the bridge decks were formed and poured at ground level, on top of the D-Wall. The form work and ground was then excavated.”

BMD Constructions (BMD) has been engaged by Main Roads Western Australia (MRWA) for the Coolup East Bridge Replacement Project, located in the states south west approximately 100klm south of Perth.

The $6.9 million contract for MRWA involves demolishing the 1964 timber bridge that had a 10-tonne load limit, and the construction of a new incrementally launched composite steel box girder, precast and insitu concrete bridge.

The Western Australia Transport Minister Dean Nalder, announced upon the commencement of the site works “the project will increase the load capacity of Coolup East Road between South Western Highway and Pinjarra Williams Road for traffic bypassing Pinjarra”.

The Minister also said the project would be funded through the State Initiative Program, “The program is about strengthening and growing our regions and helping communities realise their potential through the delivery of key economic infrastructure such as this.”

In April 2016 a major project milestone was reached, with the first section of the new bridge over the Murray River being launched. This significant event completes the first 50 metre span of the super-structure and allows the remaining steel box girder to be fabricated in the launch bed before the final launch in May.

BMD Construction’s WA Construction Manager, Mick Slocombe said, “The project is significant as it the first time in WA that a steel girder/concrete composite structure has been incrementally launched. The collaborative team approach and strong relationship with the client ensured that the first concrete deck pour and scaffolding access platforms were delivered seamlessly,” he said.

Due to the age and condition of the run down structure, the project is being fast tracked and this milestone will guarantee a safe driving environment when the bridge opens in October 2016.

The second launch, completing the 100m span was completed in May 2016 and allowed the two temporary supports to be removed and the superstructure to be lowered onto the permanent pier and abutment. The launch was a great success and a testament to the collaboration of BMD, their Subcontractors and Main Roads WA.

Project ScopeProject Scope include the following activities:The innovated approach with the design and ultimate construction of the bridge structure was a collaborative exercise that was achieved with the both the BMD Construction Team and MRWA Project Team.

The site was limited to a tight footprint and planning and staging of the Works was carefully planned to ensure continued progress with the Works and ultimate success.• Demolition of the existing timber piled bridge (13 span).• Installation of in-situ bored 900 mm diameter piles for

abutments and centre pier foundations reaching 27 m below surface level. Piles were bored using a polymer fluid system to retain the pile walls with reinforcing cages installed and concrete cast in-situ.

• Construction of reinforced concrete abutment and centre pier pile caps.

• Establishment of a 70 m long casting bed with concrete supports for the incremental launch of steel/concrete bridge sections.

• Installation of alternative temporary piers at the 25m mid-span to assist with the launch of the bridge sections.

• Manufacture and supply of bridge structural steel. • Manufacture and supply of innovated concrete soffit

precast panels for the in-situ cast of the bridge deck prior to launch of the structure.

• Concrete bridge deck and wing-, back walls and approach slabs at the abutments.

• Launch of the steel and concrete composite bridge structure in two launch events of 50 m span lengths.

• Installation of permanent spherical bearings.• Road traffic barrier installation on and off the bridge.• Sundry minor steel installation of access walkways and

hand railings.

• Drainage and sub-surface drainage works.• Rock armour to abutment slopes.• New pavements and seal surfacing works.• Revegetation and landscaping.

Work commenced in early October 2015 with the careful demolition of the old 100 m timber 13 span piled bridge which incorporated a concrete beam deck.

900 mm diameter cast in situ piles were installed using a polymer drilling fluid system to ensure pile depths through hard subsurface layers. A total of 20 piles to depths of 27 m were installed.

This allowed the construction of the pile caps for the abutments and centre piers. The centre pier was constructed mid span of the 100 m long new bridge.

A casting bed was constructed on the Western abutment to allow the on-site construction of the bridge sections to be incrementally launch out over the Murray River.

Six 2.1 m deep I beam girder sections (each 40 Ton) were systematically delivered to site in 35 m long sections together with associated cross bracing members and walkway planking to allow the fabrication of the bridge to be built in place on the casting bed ready for the two planned launches, each of 50 m length. A total of 350 Ton of structural steel was manufactured for the bridge construction.

Once bridge sections were construction, precast panels were installed to the structure to act as a deck soffit for the cast of the bridge deck and at the same time create the outside upstand face of the deck so traffic barrier railings

could be installed prior to the launch of each section. Temporary megashore support towers were erected at each mid span of each launch length to assist with the support of the bridge sections.

An innovated nose jacking system and the use of temporary bearings ensured that the launch of the bridge sections progressed successfully and within design parameters.

During the launch the nose jacking system was used to lift the structure up and over the temporary supports which were designed to accommodate the huge vertical and horizontal forces induced by the moving structure.

The bridge is currently in position and the construction of the abutment wing and back walls are in currently in progress. The project is on target and due for completion ahead of the construction completion date.

Construction of the new Fortescue River Bridge will service mining activity in the local communities of Newman, Nullagine and Marble Bar.

Overview The Fortescue River Bridge is located approximately 1,200km north of Perth and is renowned for flooding after heavy rains. This project will consist of the demolition of the existing bridge and construction of a new bridge as well as the realignment of 2km of Marble Bar Road.

This has reduced disruptions during the wet season due to road closures and flooding as well as boost road user safety and accessibility to far northern Western Australia. Project scope

The project works consisted of: • realignment of 2km of road • demolition of the existing Fortescue River Bridge • construction of additional bridge made up of 3 piers,

2 headstocks and 4 spans x 3 girders wide (girders measuring approx. 25m x 3.4m and weighing 64.5t each)

• construction of ancillary drainage works • construction of a spur levee and associated scour

protection systems • local retraining of the Fortescue River banks • rehabilitation of existing portions of the Marble Bar Road

and adjacent side tracks.

Fortescue River Fortescue River BridgeBridge

The State Government awarded a contract for the replacement of the single lane bridge over the Fortescue River near Roy Hill Station.

The BMD MACA Joint Venture built a new two-lane bridge and seal two kilometres of Marble Bar Road near Roy Hill Station. This key transport and service link in the Pilbara will receive an important and necessary upgrade, boosting road user safety and wet weather accessibility in the State’s far north. It is regarded as a priority because it services the mining activity and supports the local communities between Newman, Nullagine and Marble Bar. “This project will reduce the disruptions being experienced during the wet season which has resulted in road closures due to flooding,” Mr Nalder said. The project, was completed in May 2016.

Stage Two of the Karloo Wandina Project involves the construction of a 65m wide bridge over the Geraldton Mount Magnet Road, also known as the Southern Transport Corridor to connect Verita Road and Abraham Street.

The $9 million contract to build the bridge was awarded to Georgiou Group, a Perth based company with the experience required to construct the bridge over the two lane highway and live railway line.

More than 16 local contractors are providing $2.2 million of products and services for the project including site surveying, plant hire, mulching concrete, rocks, cranes fuel and more.

Specialist elements including the pre-cast concrete beams required for the bridge span have been sourced from Perth as they were not commercially viable for local production.

Bridge spans over the Mount Magnet Highway were lifted into place in early 2016. With more than 1600 traffic movements a day on Verita Road, the bridge will provided a much needed link from the south to the northern suburbs.

Construction of the Abraham Street bridge is the City’s largest Capital Works Project in the 2015/16 financial year is funded by the State Government’s Royalties for Regions via the Mid West Investment Plan, the Australian Government’s Building Better Regional Cities program, Asia Iron and the City.

Closes The GapThe gap between Verita Road and Abraham Street has been filled with the last bridge planks lifted into place over the rail line.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the placement of precast concrete planks marked a milestone in Stage 2 of the Karloo Wandina Project.

“Twenty 14.4m long precast concrete planks weighing 13 tonnes each, were lifted into place over the railway line completing an important phase in the construction of the 68m long and 14.2m wide Abraham Street Bridge,” he said.

Abraham Street BridgeAbraham Street Bridge

“This means the Karloo Wandina Project has reached an important milestone and is now one step closer to being completed.”

A concrete deck covering the bridge span beams has been poured and road safety barriers including anti-vandalism screens have been installed before the final layer of asphalt was laid connecting Abraham Street and Ackland Road.

“At the moment Verita Road is averaging 1600 traffic moments per day and the Abraham Street Bridge will certainly provide a much needed link between the southern and northern suburbs,” said Mayor Van Styn.

“The final stage in the Karloo Wandina project will be the construction of a roundabout at the Abraham Street / Utakarra Road intersection to accommodate traffic once the Abraham Street Bridge opens.”

Construction of the Abraham Street Bridge is the City’s largest Capital Works Project in the 2015/16 financial year.

The $9 million project, which is part of the $38.2 million Karloo Wandina Project, is funded by the State Government’s Royalties for Regions via the Mid West Investment Plan, the Australian Government’s Building Better Regional Cities program, Asia Iron and the City.

CIVIL CONSTRUCTION

Wandina Project in Geraldton, was officially completed almost two months ahead of schedule in May, 2016.

The scope of works involved the construction of a three span bridge over Mount Magnet Road, also known as the Southern Transport Corridor, and the Brookfield Rail Corridor.

This bridge connects Verita Road and Abraham Street creating a link from the southern to the northern suburbs of Geraldton. The $9 million contract to construct the bridge was awarded to Georgiou Group.

The Reinforced Earth Company (RECO) was contracted to design and supply 700sqm of Reinforced Earth® abutment walls. The curved walls were finished using plain TerraPlus+® concrete facing panels with an optimized size of 2.25m X 2.25m. The Reinforced Earth® block incorporated piles, which support the bridge abutment sill beams, and a cable protection slab.

The placement of the reinforcing strips and backfill allowed for these elements within the design, and site assistance ensured that the proximity of heavy compaction equipment did not adversely affect the integrity of the wall facing panels during construction.

RECO provided essential equipment specifically designed to assist with the safe construction of these Reinforced Earth® walls. Safety barriers ensured adequate fall protection for the construction crew.

Steel braces and associated design drawings sere also supplies to ensure correct installation of the panels.

Reinforced Earth® structures are built completely from behind therefore not interfering with access and traffic in front of the walls. This contributed greatly to meeting the challenge of constructing a 65m long bridge over a live highway and railway line.

The Southern Transport Corridor was only closed for two days so the precast concrete bridge beams could be lifted into place once the Reinforced Earth® supporting structures were complete.

Main Roads are undertaking a series of roadworks along Great Eastern Highway in the City of Belmont this year to pave the way for the future Forrestfield-Airport Link - a new train line that will connect Forrestfield to the City.

Work has started on a $12.5 million upgrade at the intersection of Great Eastern Highway and Fauntleroy Avenue. Later this year, we will also upgrade the nearby intersection of Great Eastern Highway and Coolgardie Avenue. The final step will be the closure of Brearley Avenue at its intersection with Great Eastern Highway in December 2016, which is required to facilitate construction of the new Belmont Station (formerly known as Airport West Station) as part of the Forrestfield-Airport Link project.

These works are funded by the State Government.

Main Roads is undertaking a series of roadworks along Great Eastern Highway in 2016 to pave the way for the future Forrestfield-Airport Link.

Work has already started on a $12.5million upgrade at the intersection of Fauntleroy Avenue, which includes widening the highway to build shared left-turn pockets and bus priority lanes, dedicated right-turn lanes and U-turn facilities on Great Eastern Highway for traffic in both directions. There will also be modifications to the traffic signals.

These works will facilitate construction of the new Belmont Station (previously known as Airport West Station) as part of the Forrestfield-Airport Link project.

What to expect during these roadworksReduced speed limits and traffic management will be in place, so please plan ahead and allow extra time for your journey during these important roadworks. In June, Fauntleroy Avenue will also be closed at its southern junction with Great Eastern Highway for approximately six weeks. All road users wishing to access the General Aviation precinct at Perth Airport will be redirected via Brearley Avenue and Dunreath Drive. This will be followed by a short closure of Fauntleroy Avenue at its northern junction with Great Eastern Highway, with local access maintained via Coolgardie Avenue and Lilian Grove. As these are busy intersections, some night works will also be required for asphalting. We will make every effort to keep noise to a minimum after hours.

Fauntleroy Avenue IntersectionFauntleroy Avenue Intersection

What to expect once these works are complete The upgraded intersection at Great Eastern Highway and Fauntleroy Avenue will remain the primary access to the General Aviation precinct at the airport and provide alternative access to terminals T3 and T4 for westbound traffic on Great Eastern Highway.

All other road users will be directed to the airport terminals via Tonkin Highway and the new Dunreath Drive interchange. The upgraded intersection at Coolgardie Avenue will provide alternative local access to and from Great Eastern Highway for Redcliffe residents.

Forrestfield-Airport Link The State Government’s $2billion Forrestfield-Airport Link is a new train line that will connect Forrestfield to the city, opening up Perth’s eastern suburbs to the rail network for the first time and giving Perth Airport users a travel option five minutes faster than by car.

The rail link will connect with the existing Midland line near Bayswater Station and run to Forrestfield underground, minimising impact on the existing land and road network.

Great Eastern Highway - Fauntleroy Avenue Intersection Upgrade

In March, a contract was awarded to MACA Civil Pty Ltd to upgrade the intersection of Great Eastern Highway at Fauntleroy Avenue. This project will be completed by December and includes widening Great Eastern Highway to build shared left turn lanes and bus priority lanes, dedicated right turn lanes and U-turn facilities.

Once Brearley Avenue is closed, the upgraded intersection at Great Eastern Highway and Fauntleroy Avenue will remain the primary access to the General Aviation precinct at the airport and provide alternative access to Terminals 3 and 4 for westbound traffic on Great Eastern Highway.

Roadworks to prepare for Forrestfield-Airport LinkThe State Government announced work has commenced to upgrade the intersection of Great Eastern Highway and Fauntleroy Avenue in Ascot, in preparation for the Forrestfield-Airport Link. “This $4.8 million project is expected to be finished by the end of the year,” Mr Nalder said. “Great Eastern Highway will be widened to provide shared left-turn pockets, bus priority lanes, dedicated right-turn lanes and U-turn access for both westbound and eastbound traffic, as well as modifying the traffic signals. “Later in 2016, the nearby intersection of Coolgardie Avenue will also be upgraded to provide dedicated right-turn lanes for Great Eastern Highway traffic in both directions. “Both intersections are expected to be completed before the end of the year, in readiness for the planned closure of Brearley Avenue at Great Eastern Highway.” The Minister said the projects were the first in a series of roadworks planned to facilitate the Forrestfield-Airport Link, which required the closure of Brearley Avenue at Great Eastern Highway in order to develop the Airport West Station. “Once this closure is in place, north and southbound Tonkin Highway traffic will be directed to the domestic airport through the new Dunreath Drive link,’ he said. “Only traffic heading to the domestic airport from the east is expected to use Fauntleroy Avenue to access the terminals.”

Independent Dilapidation SurveysBuilding Consultancy & Inspections (BCI) were proud to be awarded the contract to conduct independent dilapidation surveys for this project. BCI have worked hard to streamline its dilapidation systems and processes.

Managing Director Ashley Colman advised, “We have introduced a new app based reporting system which not only saves time but allows us to tailor reporting to each individual project. “

BCI have been conducting dilapidation surveys for over 20 years and understand that clients need to be able to trust them to be able to take ownership of this area from initial owner/occupier contact through to report delivery. This allows our client to concentrate on the core project while receiving ongoing updates at agreed timeframes.

Ashley says, “We understand the need to represent our client professionally whilst ensuring the surveys are conducted thoroughly, on time and on budget. This is something we have prided ourselves on time and again.”

Dilapidation surveys are often a part of the project that can have a very short lead in time and as such, BCI ensure current insurances and systems are available to conduct large projects. BCI have a team of highly experienced inspectors available to mobilize at short notice.

The Great Eastern Highway/Fauntleroy Rd project was a prime example of this as, in many cases, BCI made first contact with owner/occupiers of both commercial and residential premises, sent letters, conducted door knocks, scheduled and completed the inspections and delivered comprehensive reports.

Completed during the 4 weeks prior to the beginning of serious vibrations associated with the works, which is a critical time for the project team.

Ashley adds, “We take on these dilapidation projects bearing in mind that the civil construction company needs to concentrate their energy on other areas leading up to project start.

Our client trusts that they can say to us, ‘Here you go BCI, here’s a map (or a list of properties), please conduct dilapidation surveys of everything within the marked area’, and we go away and do that for them.” BCI have been operating in Western Australia for over 20 years and are looking forward to partnering with further projects in Western Australia and are planning on making their services available for large dilapidation projects in Brisbane, S.E. Queensland and Northern N.S.W. soon.
