Being prepared means knowing how to protect yourself and your property before, during and after unexpected power outages.
Complete as many challenges as you can in order to be better prepared for extreme weather and emergency situations! Remember – the more challenges you complete, the more points you collect toward awesome prizes!
Power up to Power Down:
8. Get to know your ‘panicked’ self
DID YOU KNOW that in some cases, emergency situations turn regularly self-sufficient
and abled body residents into more vulnerable versions of themselves? Without power it is hard to find things such as eyeglasses or medications,
or to cook meals and/or keep schedules.
CHALLENGE Power down for one hour before bed. Turn off the lights, power down any electronics, and ignore any clocks/lights that are normally available to you. Try to find your sleeping clothes, brush your teeth, feed/water the pets, lock up the house and continue your regular routine … but in the dark without external communication.
VALIDATION Be sure to mark this challenge as complete on your P2BP scorecard and tell us how it felt to be in a powered-down situation.

Extreme precipitation events can have devastating effects on our natural and built environments, health and safety as well as recreation and tourism. According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, over 1.7 million homes are at risk from flooding. Most Canadians don’t realize they are at risk, and don’t have a plan to protect themselves or their property from flooding.
Observation of changing weather patterns and data projections indicate that more precipitation will fall in shorter periods of time causing personal safety risks, environmental impacts and property damage. Prepare to be prepared today by completing some of the “Be Rain Ready” challenges!
Complete as many challenges as you can in order to be better prepared for extreme weather and emergency situations! Remember – the more challenges you complete, the more points you collect toward awesome prizes!

13. Identify your lowlands
DID YOU KNOW the observation of changing weather patterns and data projections indicate
that more precipitation will fall in shorter periods of time causing personal safety risks,
environmental impacts and property damage? Be rain ready and know the risks!
CHALLENGE Walk around your property, preferably after a rain event. Have you noticed low-lying areas where water tends to pool on your property? If so, does it pool close to your foundation? If so, think about ways you can redirect this water away from your foundation? Can you alleviate some of the water from pooling here by redirecting eaves troughs, planting a tree, shrub or wildflower patch? An easy way to check if the land slopes away from your foundation is to use a soccer ball – it rolls the same direction as water!
VALIDATION Snap and submit pictures of your water pools and tell us on your P2BP scorecard how water may enter your house. Don’t forget to mark this challenge as complete!

14. Greening your grounds
DID YOU KNOW that there are some
inexpensive ways to control stormwater on your property? Plants, trees, wildflowers and
increasing permeable surfaces can help soak up some of that extra water while rain barrels can be used to capture this precious resource for future use. There are called Low Impact Techniques.
CHALLENGE
Manage storm water on your property by using low-
impact techniques that are sure to make your yard
the envy of the neighbourhood! Walk around your
house and determine a good area, such as a low-
lying area, that you could naturalize and soften.
VALIDATION
On your P2BP scorecard, describe two areas that
can be improved to help manage storm water. Don’t

15. Weepy Foundation Drains?
DID YOU KNOW that foundation drains are
also called “weeper” or “weeping tiles”? It is a piping system around the basement to receive
water and direct it away from the house – preventing groundwater from building up against your foundation. Weeping tiles directly connected to the sewer systems put extra pressure on the
system during heavy rainfall events.
CHALLENGE
Do you know where your weeping tile is and what it is connected to? Check for symptoms of a clogged drain, according to CAA higher humidity levels or the formation of white crystalline powder on concrete may indicate a need to provide maintenance to your foundation drain. Spend some time in you basement and look for this powder, known as efflorescence, and take note of the humidity level.
VALIDATION
Record this challenge as complete on your P2BP
scorecard and tell us what you have learned.
EXTRA POINTS
If you know that your weeping tile is connected directly to the sewer system, apply for Halton Region’s “Weeping tile disconnection” program. Forward a copy of your confirmation email to [email protected]

directly connected to the wastewater system are a major contributing factor to overloading the sewer system & causing basement flooding?
CHALLENGE
Inspect your downspouts and answer the following questions:
1) Do your downspouts lead into the ground?2) If no to the above question, does your
downspout drain away from your foundation?3) Does your downspout drain over an area that
can soak up the water?4) If you answered yes to question 1, are you
aware of Halton Region’s “DownspoutDisconnection” program?

Ontario without being treated? These are in place to direct rain water to the nearest river,
creek or lake.
CHALLENGE
Locate the storm sewer closest to your home and take note of this drain throughout the year. Be sure it is clear of any debris (i.e. leaves, garbage, etc.). Have you noticed that water tends to pool there in a heavy rain storm?

22. Sump pump – do you have one?
DID YOU KNOW that sump pumps are used
in basement flooding events to pump water up and send it away from a house to a dry well or municipal storm drain? Once installed, sump
pumps need regular maintenance to ensure they are functioning properly in emergency situations.
CHALLENGE
Not sure if you have a sump pump? Many homes in Oakville have a sump pump in the basement but the home owner may not know it’s there. Head down to your basement and get to know your sump pump(s) today! Make sure it is clear of debris.
VALIDATION
Record on your P2BP scorecard what you have learned – do you have a sump pump? When was your sump pump last maintained? Do you know the make or model or have the manual on-hand? These are all important questions to ask yourself to prepare for an emergency!

31. Checkin’ in twice
In the past an average of approximately 12 tornadoes were reported in Ontario per year. In
2013, 22 tornadoes were reported in Ontario. Environment Canada accounts for this
increase in part due to population growth and urban sprawl – there are more people in
more places to report such occurrences. But there is also scientific evidence that states that
rising air and water temperatures will contribute to more tornado activity in areas not
previously prone to this type of activity. Tornado season typically lasts until early October.
According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC), wind damage is covered under most
Canadian policies, and damage to vehicles from wind is usually covered by a comprehensive
auto insurance policy or if ‘all perils’ coverage has been purchased. Purchasing this coverage
is not mandatory, so check your policy. For information on how you can build your resiliency
visit the high wind and tornadoes pages.
Complete as many challenges as you can in order to be better prepared for extreme weather
and emergency situations! Remember – the more challenges you complete, the more points
you collect toward awesome prizes!

27. Flight test
DID YOU KNOW that Environment Canada calls a high wind alert when wind speeds reach 90 km/hr? Or that during high wind events, it is
often flying debris that causes most of the property damage, human injuries and casualties?
CHALLENGE Walk around your property and look high and low for items that you believe could take flight during high wind events. This includes patio furniture, BBQs, umbrellas, tree limbs, garbage and recycling bins, and much more. At 90km/hr what do you think is at risk of blowing away?
VALIDATION On your P2BP scorecard, tell us how wind ready you really are! Tell us what you have learned, is you feel wind ready? What items are at risk of taking flight?

28. Leaky windows
DID YOU KNOW that extreme winds can damage your home, with windows and roofs
being the most vulnerable areas? Often time’s windows break and roof shingles become
detached from the roof, both of which could cause dangerous situations.
CHALLENGE
Check for drafts by securing a piece of paper on the inside of a window on a windy day. If the paper starts to move with the gusts of wind you know that your windows could use more insulations.
Also walk around your house and look up at your roof, does it appear that there are loose shingles? If so, consider calling a roofer to secure those shingles.
VALIDATION
How secure is your house from drafts? What could you do to reduce this draft? Did you notice anything about your roof or eaves, does it all look secure or could you use a second opinion?

34. West Nile Virus35. Test for pests – Lyme disease36. Hot or cold
Halton Region is concerned about environmental health, and monitors air and water quality while responding to other environmental health concerns. Having good environmental health lowers human risk for disease and illness.
The presence of vectors and the diseases they carry may not be caused by climate change but the change in their migration, breeding and life cycle patterns are definitely influenced. For example, increased annual temperatures may allow for a longer active season for disease vectors. An increase in precipitation may allow for more standing water and mosquito breeding grounds.
Complete as many challenges as you can in order to be better prepared for extreme weather and emergency situations! Remember – the more challenges you complete, the more points you collect toward awesome prizes!
