INTRODUCTION#

BELLASTOCK PROPOSE WITH «THE CITY IN A BREATH» THE REALISATION OF AN EPHEMERAL INFLATABLE CITY

Bellastock gives the opportunity to conceive, realise and live inside your own project.

Every groups of 5 people have the elements to built their own structure, and we’ll all share together the only element : the air.

Come to experiment the infl atable construction and participate to the fabrication of an ephemeral city : «the city in a breath». Then contribute to a temporary utopia that will live again in the near future through events and actions in the public space.

THE PRINCIPLE#

THE EPHEMERAL CITY >>> AUTONOMOUS AND NOMADIC STRUCTURES

The objective is to conceive an architectural object capable of integrating itself into the City in a breath but which could subsequently become autonomous and nomadic.

Quatre points majeurs guident la conception :

- the uses and intentions in theory : each group must defi ne its own intentions for use. - the imperative : to shelter the group during the festival as of the fi rst night.- the objective : to re-contextualize an autonomous and nomadic structure.- the constraints : construction time (48h) and a limited budget (150 Euros per group of 5)

THE TOOLS OF CONCEPTION#

The fi rst idea is to acquire the basic know-how related to the conception and construction of infl atable structures, particularly the difference between single and double membrane structures.

The blog: www.bellastock.com/blogbellastock

provides information on projects, historical references, bibliographies as well schemas of infl atable structures.

THE TOOLS OF CONCEPTION#

The city in a breath takes its title from the fl ux of air that, coming from a single blower, will diffuse itself throughout the city through our constructions. Thereby we will all be permanently connected via a single material – air. The choice of a single or a double membrane will bear consequences on the mode of connection with the breath, with the city.

Integrated, attached, distanced, disconnected…It is up to each group to decide on the relationship that their structure will have with the city.

Page 6: Registration file bellastock_2011

Before making and experimenting, it is necessary that each group develops a strategy for the representation and the production of their project : the pattern for cut out and assembly.

Like a dress pattern, the drawing will serve to produce the desired volumes.

During the realization of the project, a certain of number of constraints must be taken into account:

- the temporality of the constructions

- the characteristics of the materials

- the logic of the fabrication

Warning ! Angles are complex zones of assembly and therefore pose risk of air leaks and structural weakness.

OUTILS DE CONCEPTION#

Page 7: Registration file bellastock_2011

LeThe materials and elements of construction are listed in the Toolbox.

Each group of 5 persons will dispose of a sum of 150 Euros to acquire the necessary materials for the concretization of their project.

The elements here presented are accompanied by the principles of use.

Needless to say, the list is not exhaustive; for as long as the group keeps in mind the constraints of building with infl atables, other ways of assembling the elements can and should be explored.

OUTILS DE RÉALISATION#

Page 8: Registration file bellastock_2011

To facilitate the connection between the different infl atable structures, two types of joint are proposed: hoops and valves. The collective challenge is to assure the transmission of the air pressure between the different infl atable structures. The joints are standard elements that will permit different projects to articulate themselves. Each project must have at least two connections to transmit the air under pressure from one structure to another.

The joint is relatively air-tight and permits the physical passage for a human being from one infl atable to another.

TO CONNECT TWO DOUBLE MEMBRANE INFLATABLES

The transparent PVC valves will be soldered onto squares of tarpaulin (20cmx20cm). These dimensions allow to infl ate the structure manually or to connect the infl atable to a continuous source of pressured air. Several structures might be connected to one another by a fl exible sheath provided during the festival.

THE P.V.C. FILMThe PVC fi lm is fl exible, produced by the industrial process of….The constraints of production (quantity and thickness etc…) and logistics reduce the range to choose from. We will dis-pose of two fi lms with different aspects:transparent (width 70 cm )opalescent (width 140 cm )

The transparent clippable eyelet will create punctual links to or through which to attach or pass cables. The tarpaulin is very fl exible; it is necessary to glue or tape using double sided tape the two faces of tarpaulin that will receive the eyelet.

1. gluing the two faces

2. piercing pre-hole

3. clipping the eyelet

The scratch possesses a sticky surface to fi x to the PVC. It is useful for all openings but can be used for others ends also. Some technical givens

> the glue has a superior resistance to that of scratch

> the 2 surfaces, once assembled, are not hermetic.

The ballast is the mass that will keep the structure from moving off the ground. It’s a pocket containing 11l of wa-ter that can be placed at different strategic points of the construction. The sheaths of polypropylene bags will be available on site for continuous linear ballasting.

THE BALLASTThe string will allow for a different distribution of air, in-dependent of the pattern. Associated with other elements (the suction pad, the eyelet….), it will exerce a pulling force on a specifi c point of the wall.

1. every student has the responsibility for the whole but especially for himself

2. the Bellastock citizenship is obtained through participation

3. the male and female staff members love to chat with newcomers whilst engaging them in tasks indispensable to the smooth running of the festival

4. whilst the festival is primarily aimed at students, it is by no means inaccessible in status or capacity to other persons

5. the closer the number of students at the end of the festival to the number at the start, the clearer it will be to its organizers that it has been successful

6. the organizers will be glad to learn that the money spent of security is a wasted

THE BELLASTOCK CHARTER#

7. in want of a cheerful atmosphere it is not uncommon to see fellow participants frolicking in the grass. Help them to stay clean and use the toilets provided

8. Bellastock is a highly addictive natural product. It is inadvisable to use in combination with synthetic products

9. Every participant is a member of the Bellastock association (association ruling 1901)

10. The participants have all right to intellectual property that is their creating but must accept its free publication and diffusion by the Bellastock association

11. The participants will cease their right of image to Bellastock by signing the contact for the right of exploitation of the right of image

12. The arriving team consists of 5 members, on departure it is 1000 strong
