GREEN & GOLDSPORT CAMPSWelcome to the 2017 edition of our Green & Gold Sport Camps, which provide participants with a fun-filled and memorable developmental experience in the home of the Golden Bears and Pandas! Green & Gold Sport Camps feature an ideal blend of sport-specific and general athletic development.

The sport-specific component has been designed in conjunction with our University of Alberta Head Coaches, and is consistent with the guidelines of each sport’s Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) framework. The general athletic component is delivered through our innovative AIM Program, which combines age-appropriate physical and mental activities with carefully selected multi-sport experiences. The inclusion of these two components is intended to help participants build well-rounded skills and have a great time in the process!

In order to enhance learning and enjoyment, all camps at the FUNdamentals (ages 6–8), Learn-to-Train (ages 9–11), Train-to-Train (ages 12–14) and Train-to-Compete (ages 15–17) stages continue to be full-day camps. All camps at the Active-Start (ages 3–5) stage continue to be half-day morning camps.

GREEN & GOLD ELITE CAMPS

The Green & Gold Sport System and Golden Bears and Pandas Varsity Athletics are excited to offer Green & Gold Elite Camps in several of our varsity sports. These camps are designed for athletes looking to learn in a high performance environment, develop advanced skills and tactics, and gain exposure to the coaches, athletes and training facilities at the University of Alberta.• Participants will train alongside current Golden Bears and/

or Pandas Varsity Athletes• Programming is designed and delivered by our Varsity Head

Coaches, Assistant Coaches and Performance Coaches• Lessons plans will focus on advanced skills and tactics• Participants will receive custom camp apparel

Information about these camps will be released in Spring 2017 through our website: uab.ca/sportsystem. Please check the website for information about these exciting camps as it becomes available.

NEW FOR 2017: SWIMMING IS NOW INCLUDED IN MULTI-SPORT CAMPS

Swimming will now be featured throughout Green & Gold Multi-Sport Camps at the FUNdamentals and Learn-to-Train stages. Participants who may be interested in full day swim camps should stay tuned for the release of the Green & Gold Elite Camp information.

Parking IncludedFor your convenience, parking during designated drop-off and pick-up periods is included in your camp fee. Parents will be provided with a parking pass for specified areas during designated times. More detailed information will be provided prior to the first day of your registered camp.

Full-Day Camps• Drop-off and camp sign in will begin at 8:30am• Pick-up and camp sign out will end at 4:30pm• All full-day camps begin at 8:45am and end at 4:15pm

Supervised Lunches• All participants attending a full-day camp will be supervised

during the lunch break• All participants are required to provide their own lunch.

Healthy options are encouraged• Please ensure all lunches and snacks are nut free

Parking & Location Information• If your child is attending a golf camp, they must be dropped

off and picked up at SAVILLE COMMUNITY SPORTS CENTRE (West Entrance). We will provide supervised transportation to and from RedTail Landing Golf Club and ensure they arrive safely

• If your child is attending a soccer camp at CAMPUS SAINT-JEAN, please make arrangements for drop off and pick up at that location

• If your child is attending a hockey camp at CLARE DRAKE ARENA, please make arrangements for drop off and pick up in the east end of the arena at ice level

• If your child is attending a camp on NORTH CAMPUS, including VAN VLIET COMPLEX and CLARE DRAKE ARENA, we will provide you with a parking permit. This permit will allow you to park in specified areas during designated drop-off and pick-up times. More information will be sent to all registrants in advance of their camp

• If your child is attending a camp at SAVILLE COMMUNITY SPORTS CENTRE, no parking permits are required

Sportball™This half-day camp is offered in partnership with Sportball™, which has a proven track record of delivering quality programming at this initial stage of athletic development. The goal of this camp is to introduce participants to the concepts and skills involved in a wide range of ball games, and in the process to promote cooperation and fair play.

• Participants may be grouped based on age and/or experience

• No previous sports experience is required • Other than athletic clothing and footwear, there is no special

equipment needed• All participants will receive an official camp t-shirt

The Active-Start stage of the Long-Term Athlete Development framework is intended to introduce and build fundamental movement skills and help participants feel comfortable in all sporting environments.

FUNDAMENTALS CAMPS (AGES 6–8)The FUNdamentals stage of the Long-Term Athlete Development framework is intended to help participants improve their fundamental movement skills and build the basic skills associated with a variety of sports that are best initiated at this stage. All FUNdamentals camps have been designed in conjunction with our Golden Bears and Pandas coaches and Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation experts.

BasketballThe goals of this camp are to build basic basketball skills and improve general athletic skills. Approximately half of this camp will be spent on the basketball court where participants will develop their footwork, dribbling, passing, and shooting skills through fun drills and modified game play. The other half will be spent taking part in our innovative AIM Program, which combines age-appropriate physical and mental activities with carefully selected multi-sport experiences. • Participants may be grouped based on age and/or current

skill level• No previous basketball experience is required• Other than athletic clothing and footwear, there is no special

equipment needed• All participants will receive a souvenir basketball and an

official camp t-shirt

ClimbingThe goals of this camp are to build basic climbing skills and improve general athletic skills. Approximately half of this camp will be spent on the climbing wall where participants will begin to develop their bouldering, high-wall climbing and rappelling skills through a variety of fun drills and challenges. The other half will be spent taking part in our innovative AIM Program, which combines age-appropriate physical and mental activities with carefully selected multi-sport experiences. • Participants may be grouped based on age and/or current

skill level• No previous climbing experience is required• Other than athletic clothing and footwear, there is no special

REGISTRATION 7

HockeyThe goals of this camp are to build basic hockey skills and improve general athletic skills. Approximately half of this camp will be spent on the ice at Clare Drake Arena where participants will begin to develop their skating, passing, shooting and puck-handling skills through fun drills and modified game play. The other half will be spent taking part in our innovative AIM Program, which combines age-appropriate physical and mental activities with carefully selected multi-sport experiences. • Participants may be grouped based on age and/or current

skill level• This is not a beginners’ camp, so some previous hockey

experience is required• Participants are required to come with full hockey

equipment including their own stick along with suitable athletic clothing and footwear for the AIM component

• All participants will receive an official camp hockey jersey

Multi-SportThe goals of this camp are to give participants an opportunity to explore a variety of team sports that are suitable at this stage and to simultaneously develop a wide range of sport-specific and general athletic skills. The planned sports in this camp are basketball, soccer, softball and swimming, although adjustments are possible depending on weather or other circumstances. An alternative option will exist for participants who are unable to swim. General athletic skills will be taught through our innovative AIM Program, which incorporates a variety of age-appropriate physical and mental activities. This camp will focus on skill development over the first four days, with a friendly competition featured on the final day. • Participants may be grouped based on age and/or current

skill level• Previous sports experience is not required• Participants should come prepared each day with athletic

clothing and footwear, as well as swimwear • All participants will receive an official camp t-shirt

Approximately half of this camp will be spent on the soccer field where participants will develop their ball control, dribbling, passing and shooting skills through fun drills and modified match play. The other half will be spent taking part in our innovative AIM Program, which combines age-appropriate physical and mental activities with carefully selected multi-sport experiences. • Please note this camp is now located on the University of

Alberta’s South Campus• Participants may be grouped based on age and/or current

skill level• No previous soccer experience is required• Participants are asked to wear shin guards, soccer socks,

cleats and suitable athletic clothing• Please bring running shoes for the AIM component or in

case the camp is moved indoors due to inclement weather• Camp activities will take place primarily outdoors. Camp

participants should be prepared for inclement weather• All participants will receive an official camp t-shirt

TennisThe goals of this camp are to build basic tennis skills and improve general athletic skills. Approximately half of this camp will be spent on the Saville Community Sports Centre’s tennis courts where participants will develop the skills associated with the forehand, backhand, serve and volley through fun drills and modified match play. The other half will be spent taking part in our innovative AIM Program, which combines age-appropriate physical and mental activities with carefully selected multi-sport experiences. • Participants may be grouped based on age and/or current

skill level• No previous tennis experience is required• Appropriately sized racquets will be provided to those who

need them• Other than athletic clothing and footwear, there is no special

equipment needed• All participants will receive an official camp t-shirt

Run, Jump, ThrowThe goals of this camp are to build basic track and field skills and improve general athletic skills. Approximately half of this camp will be spent at Foote Field’s outdoor track where participants will begin to develop the skills that are included in Athletics Canada’s popular Run Jump Throw Wheel program. The other half will be spent taking part in our innovative AIM Program, which combines age-appropriate physical and mental activities with carefully selected multi-sport experiences. • Participants may be grouped based on age and/or current

skill level• No previous track and field experience is required • Other than athletic clothing and footwear, there is no special

equipment needed• All participants will receive an official camp t-shirt

CurlingThe goals of this camp are to build basic curling skills and strengthen general athletic skills. Approximately half of this camp will be spent in the Saville Community Sports Centre’s curling rink where participants will begin to develop their delivery and sweeping skills through fun drills and modified game play. The other half will be spent taking part in our innovative AIM Program, which combines age-appropriate physical and mental activities with carefully selected multi-sport experiences. • Participants may be grouped based on age and/or current

skill level• No previous curling experience is required • Specialized half-weight ‘little rocks’ will be used• Brooms and sliders will be provided to those who need them• Participants are required to wear a CSA approved helmet,

clean athletic shoes, and warm athletic clothing when on the ice

• They are also required to bring a separate pair of athletic shoes and summer athletic clothing for the AIM component

• All participants will receive an official camp hoodie

Flag FootballThe goals of this camp are to build basic flag football skills and strengthen general athletic skills. Approximately half of this camp will be spent on Foote Field’s new artificial turf where participants will begin to develop non-contact skills like passing, receiving, running with the ball and defending through fun drills and modified game play. The other half will be spent taking part in our innovative AIM Program, which combines age-appropriate physical and mental activities with carefully selected multi-sport experiences. • Participants may be grouped based on age and/or current

skill level• No previous football experience is required• Other than athletic clothing and footwear, there is no special

equipment needed• All participants will receive an official camp t-shirt

GolfThe goals of this camp are to build basic golf skills and strengthen general athletic skills. Approximately half of this camp will be spent at RedTail Landing Golf Club’s outstanding practice facilities where participants will begin to develop their full swing, short game and putting skills. The other half will be spent on South Campus taking part in our innovative AIM Program, which combines age-appropriate physical and mental activities with carefully selected multi-sport experiences. • Bus transportation between South Campus and RedTail

Landing is included in the price of this camp• Participants may be grouped based on age and/or current

skill level• No previous golf experience is required• Appropriately sized golf clubs will be provided to those who

need them• All participants will receive an official camp t-shirt

TRAIN-TO-TRAIN CAMPS (AGES 12–14)The Train-to-Train stage of the Long-Term Athlete Development framework is intended to help participants improve and advance their sport-specific skills and solidify their general athletic skills. All Train-to-Train camps have been designed in conjunction with our Golden Bears and Pandas coaches and Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation experts.

AIM Sport LeadershipThe goal of this camp is to give aspiring young athletes the tools to become better leaders and performers in their chosen sport(s). This is done through a comprehensive approach that combines physical training, leadership development, mental training, and cross-training. The physical training component of this camp will include an equal focus on advanced movement skills (i.e. agility, balance, coordination and speed) and athletic fitness (i.e. strength, power, flexibility, mobility and endurance). The leadership component will include hands-on assistant coaching opportunities within our Green & Gold Sport Camps. The mental training component will introduce a variety of essential leadership skills like teamwork, confidence, goal setting and communication. Finally, the cross training component will enable participants to experience a number of our Late Entry Sports. Together these components will help young athletes develop into well rounded leaders and competitors.• This camp is best suited for young athletes with ongoing

competitive aspirations• Other than athletic clothing and footwear there is no special

equipment needed• All participants will receive an official camp t-shirt

BasketballThe goals of this camp are to advance technical and tactical basketball skills and to refine general athletic skills. Approximately half of this camp will be spent on the basketball court where participants will develop their footwork, dribbling, passing, shooting and rebounding skills, and will learn some key tactical concepts related to offensive and defensive play. The other half will be spent taking part in our innovative AIM Program, which combines age-appropriate physical and mental activities with carefully selected cross-training opportunities. • Participants may be grouped based on age and/or current

skill level• Some previous basketball experience is an asset• Other than athletic clothing and footwear, there is no special

WAITLIST

• If your preferred camp is full, your child can be waitlisted and we will contact you if a place becomes available

• Once notified of an available space in a camp, waitlisted participants will have 48 hours to confirm their registration with payment

CANCELLATIONS, REFUNDS AND CREDITS

• Cancellation requests must be received by the Customer Service Centre prior to the start of the camp

• An administration fee of $15 will be assessed on all refunds except in the case of medical conditions. Credits are processed without any administration fees

• Refunds will be granted on cancellation requests received 28 days prior to the first day of the registered camp

• A 25% cancellation fee will be levied on cancellation requests received between 7 and 28 days prior to the first day of the registered camp

• A 50% cancellation fee will be levied on cancellation requests received between 1 and 6 days prior to the first day of the registered camp

• In case of injury or illness that occurs prior to the first day of the registered camp, full refunds will be granted when accompanied by a medical note

• Partial refunds may be granted in case of extenuating circumstances on or after the first day of the registered camp. Medical notes are required for all refunds requested on the basis of injury or illness

• Once the applicable cancellation fee has been levied, you have the choice of receiving a refund or credit

• If the original payment was by credit card, refunds will be credited to the card used for the original payment

• If the original payment was by cash or cheque, you will be refunded by cheque. This process takes 3-6 weeks

• If the original payment was by debit card, the fee will be refunded to your debit card if you request the refund in person, or by cheque if you’re unable to make the request in person

• If you choose to have a credit applied to your account, the amount will be applied and may be used towards camps or other programs and services offered by the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation

TRANSFERS

• An administration fee of $5 will be assessed to each transfer from one camp to another offered by the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation

• If transferring to a camp of higher cost, you will be required to pay the administration fee and the difference in cost between the lower and higher priced camps

• If transferring to a camp of lower cost, you will be required to pay the administration fee and the difference in cost between the higher and lower priced camps will be refunded. The $15 refund administration fee will not apply to transfers

• Transfers are permitted only within the same programming session and only if space is available

• Transferring to a camp at a later date for the purpose of avoiding cancelling fees is not permitted. Participants who have transferred to a camp later in the summer will be held to the cancellation policies that apply to the camp they were registered in originally except in exceptional circumstances

AGE POLICY

Green & Gold Sport Camps are committed to providing developmentally appropriate programs for all our participants. With that in mind, we require that all participants register in the appropriate age group. We respect that our camp participants will have diverse range of skills and experiences, and that parents may wish to see their child placed in a different age group than what their current age prescribes. However, a young athlete’s age is the most reliable factor in placing them in developmentally appropriate programming.

INFORMED CONSENT FORM

• Parents and/or guardians must sign and return an informed consent form for each participant before camp begins

• Informed consent forms only need to be completed once per summer for each participant

• Informed consent forms are valid for the entire calendar year in which they were signed and submitted

• Children without completed informed consent forms will not be allowed to participate in camp activities

• Completed forms should be completed and submitted during sign in on the first day of camp. Alternatively, forms may be emailed to [email protected] or dropped off at the Customer Service Centre in the Van Vliet Complex
