An Educational PartnershipRegis University offers an RN to Master of Science in Nursing degree program in an online learning format. The graduate portion of the program offers an emphasis in two tracks: Education or Management. Through The College Network™, students are provided with learning materials and academic support that will enable them to attain undergraduate and graduate-level credit that can be transferred to Regis University. Once a student enters Regis, courses will be offered through online learning. The course descriptions that follow offer snapshots of classes for these particular areas of study. Students must complete a total of 158 credit hours for the RN to MS in Nursing degree.

Practicum ExperienceThe practicum experience portion of the program consists of 195 hours of field experience designed to consolidate skills and apply principles in an authentic health care management or education environment. You may complete your practicum hours at a health care agency of your choice outside of your current place of employment. You will work with faculty to establish personal goals and identify suitable sites and preceptors.

In addition to the practicum component of the program, you are required to complete 40 hours of service learning.Service learning provides an educational experience while instilling the belief that service to one’s community is a lifelong pursuit. Service learning is integrated into your program of study as part of the RN to MS in Nursing program. The nursing faculty and service learning coordinator help you to establish an appropriate service learning project.

Management Track Education Track

NR 621 Advanced Management Concepts (3 SH)Examines and analyzes managerial roles of the master’s degree–prepared nurse in the context of theories, principles, and processes of management and the organization of nursing services. Topics include personnel issues, labor/legal issues, risk management, quality management, policy development and implementation, and managing information systems and resources.

NR 623F Leadership in Health Care Systems Practicum (3 SH)Students synthesize and analyze knowledge of leadership and management through in-class and fieldwork experiences. Students discuss their practical experience and its relationship to theory and reflect on their service experience. One hundred and five (105) practical hours and completion of the minimum number of service learning hours are required.

NR 614 Foundations of Health Care Economics, Accounting, and Financial Management (3 SH)Provides an overview of macroeconomics and microeconomics, with emphasis on application to health care. Principles of accounting are studied in relation to a variety of health care settings. Addresses financial management issues for both profit and not-for-profit health care organizations. Includes financial management and forecasting, statement preparation and analysis, budgeting, cost analysis and control, and case management. Basic skills in the use of electronic spreadsheets are required. The University, Rueckert-Hartman College for Health Professions, and Nursing School mission and goals are discussed.

NR 646 Teaching and Learning Strategies in Health Care (3 SH)Based on teaching-learning theory and cognitive psychology principles, this course analyzes the selection and implementation of a variety of instructional methods and conceptual strategies to facilitate learning. New developments in the field of nursing education and ways to use media, computer technology, and new innovations in and out of the classroom are also explored.

NR 615 Applications of Health Care Economics, Accounting, and Financial Management (3 SH)Enhances basic accounting information, theory, and systems related to a variety of health care institutions. Applies accounting principles in both profit and not-for-profit health care organizations, emphasizing the interpretation of accounting information for decision making. Utilizes cost and financial forecasting, budgeting and analysis, cash management techniques, and planning models and applies these concepts to management practice in the health care industry.

NR 647 Curriculum Development (3 SH)This theory course is designed for health care providers who are or will be engaged in teaching within professional health care settings. Focus is on curriculum development, outcomes, and competencies. Curriculum design, evaluation, and change are analyzed within a guiding philosophical and conceptual framework in keeping with underlying social, political, and professional factors. Emphasis is placed on the faculty role, academic performance, and social responsibility of program curriculum in meeting consumer and community needs. The influence of accrediting body/certification requirements and the implementation of innovation in the field of the discipline are also discussed.

NR 648 Evaluation Methods for Health Care Education (3 SH)This course is designed for students to compare, question, and analyze numerous assessment and evaluation concepts, models, and frameworks for their applicability in the evaluation and quality assurance process of curriculum development. Various techniques to evaluate student critical thinking, communication, and therapeutic skills are explored for use within and outside classroom settings. Additional evaluation techniques are explored for clinical and distance learning methods. Concepts and methods for evaluation of faculty, curricula, and programs are also assessed. Students also compare and contrast innovations in the area of evaluation with current theory and practice.

Students have the option to complete both tracks. Students who complete the Education Track will earn a Graduate Academic Certificate in Health Care Education in addition to their graduate nursing degree.

NR 444 Professional Role Development (3 SH) Examines themes including the Jesuit mission, service learning, personal and professional values, roles and issues in contemporary professional nursing, standards of practice, and academic tools that foster success in the nursing program.

NR 466R Community Health Nursing (3 SH)Provides overview on population-based nursing. Explores principles relevant to community health nursing including public health, epidemiology, and environmental health. Addresses the impact of health care policies on social justice and health care disparities.

NR 448 Updates in Illness and Disease Management (3 SH) Focuses on pathophysiology and updates in medical management and nursing care of selected acute and chronic illnesses. Social, cultural, and environmental influences on health and illness are explored. Features current research and the use of cutting-edge and web-based health care resources.

NR 478 Community Health Nursing Practicum (3 SH) Fosters integration of community health theory into clinical practice while students complete 45 hours of practicum in a community-based setting. With faculty guidance, students select experiences that provide the opportunity to develop a community assessment and program plan. Service learning activities focus on community and social justice.

NR 452 Contemporary Topics in Health Care (3 SH)Explores professional nursing roles within contemporary health care topic areas, including informatics, human diversity and cultural competence, gerontology, vulnerable populations, violence, social justice, and global health. Students engage in service learning and reflection.

HCE 604 Ethics for Nurse Leaders (3 SH) Examines the basic ethical principles relevant to professional health care delivery. Analyzes standards, constraints, professional codes, and ethical norms applicable to the health care context. Develops skills in solving ethical problems and in designing policies that are both managerially responsible and ethically acceptable.

NR 455 Health Promotion Concepts (3 SH) Focuses on health promotion and health teaching for healthy lifestyles in a diverse and multicultural society. Concepts of culture, spirituality, aging, chronicity, advocacy, and client anatomy are explored. The nursing process is applied to health promotion, disease prevention, and wellness through health teaching interventions.

NR 622 Advanced Leadership Concepts (3 SH)Analyzes leadership roles in relation to decision making and strategic planning. Focuses on leadership theories and concepts, team building, motivation, negotiation, mediation, conflict management, mentorship, workforce planning, human diversity, power, and communication. Content explicitly related to the Regis University mission,

“Leadership in the service of others,” is explored.

NR 460R Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing (3 SH) Focuses on analysis and research by the professional nurse. Analyzes research processes and other tools fundamental to evidence-based nursing practice and stresses the importance of both qualitative and quantitative methods to the evolving art and science of nursing. Prerequisite: NR 444.

NR 485R Advanced Practicum and Capstone (3 SH) Examines integration of leadership and management principles in practice. Students complete 45 hours of practicum with faculty guidance. Students select an agency and a leader/preceptor which will provide them with opportunities for expanding competency in leadership and management in health care. Students work to collaboratively develop a practice improvement project. Service learning focuses on leadership, social justice, and action.

NR 601 Theoretical Frameworks (3 SH)Examines the theoretical basis of nursing that guides advanced nursing practice. Critiques and evaluates theories from nursing and related fields, such as the natural, social, organizational, and biological sciences. Analyzes the usefulness and applicability of theory in nursing practice, research, education, and administration.

NR 699 Comprehensive EvaluationRequired of all students in the Graduate Program in Nursing. Consists of an oral component on specialization-specific course content. Pass/No Pass grading only.

NR 602 Research in Nursing (3 SH)Develops competency and discrimination in critical review of research tools, methods, and outcomes. Compares quantitative and qualitative designs, methods, and analytical procedures. Critiques and compares published research findings on the basis of validity, applicability, and value. Discusses informed consent and ethical issues of research.

CLM The Legal Environment (3 SH) Focuses on the law and regulations pertaining to individuals and institutions that provide health care and health care education. Topics include labor and employment law, student rights and responsibilities, patient rights, and professional and organizational accountability. Pass/No Pass grading only.

NR 608 Health Care Policy (3 SH)Examines the relationship of health policy to health care practices and outcomes, with emphasis on application to advanced practice and nursing leadership roles. Topics include change in socioeconomic theories; regulation; funding; health planning; organization, delivery, and evaluation of health care services to individuals and populations; quality activities; and legal issues.

CLM Health Care Structure and Dynamics (3 SH) Explores and analyzes classical and contemporary organizational theories and their applicability to health care. Examines organizational culture, mission, and governance; strategic planning; private, public, and integrated health care systems; and environmental issues in relation to health care organizations. Health care organizations are evaluated using an analysis of the interplay of structure and function based on contemporary organizational theories. Pass/No Pass grading only.

NR 624 Issues in Practice (3 SH)Analyzes issues and forces that influence nursing and health care. Incorporates evaluation of nursing’s contribution to social, economic, technological, legal, political, and ethical issues as they effect change and redefine health care. Topics include fiscal accountability, population demographics and diversity, advocacy, and changing roles. Facilitates understanding of the complexities of issues shaping health care. Students demonstrate synthesis of issues influencing local, state, national, or international nursing and health care.

Admissions CriteriaOnce your application is complete, Regis University evaluates your entire application to arrive at an admission decision.

1. Complete an application to the program and pay the application fee.

2. Be presently licensed as a registered nurse and be in good standing with the board of nursing in the state in which you will complete your practicum.

3. Submit a one-page essay. See application for specific essay requirements.

4. Have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

5. Submit three completed recommendation forms. Either professional or academic recommendations are acceptable—one must be from your current supervisor.

6. Evidence of current licensure as a registered nurse in the state in which you will complete the practica.

7. Two years of clinical practice as a registered nurse is preferred for all applicants.

8. Fill out transcript request forms (provided by The College Network™). The College Network will send for your transcripts from all colleges and universities attended and will forward them to the Rueckert-Hartman College for Health Professions Office of Admissions.

9. Online students must meet basic hardware and software requirements and have some experience using the Internet.
