Town HallA jewel of the late Gothic art period, the Hôtel de Ville was built between 1498 and 1530 and restored at the end of the 19th century. Its façade is embellished with an equestrian statue of Louis XII. At the top of the belfry which holds the "Bancloque", one of the oldest communal clocks in France, the 3 Picantins (Langlois, Lansquenet and Flandrin) mark the hours with their mallets. > In the annex to the right of the Town Hall.

Saint-Corneille Cloister Museum andSaint-Corneille LibraryFounded in the 9th century by the Emperor Charles the Bald, the Saint-Corneille abbey was the centre of Compiègne’s history up to the Revolution. The recently restored ab-bey cloister is partly incorporated into the Saint-Corneille library. Over 43,000 docu-ments are held there and a host of events are organised every week, for all kinds of vi-sitors. The Saint-Corneille Cloister museum located in the other galleries has a superb collection of medieval and renaissance reli-gious sculptures from the collections in the Antoine Vivenel Museum in Compiègne. > Go back to the Rue Saint-Corneille, go down
the Rue Jeanne d’Arc on the right as far as the Rue du Grand Ferré.
Saint-Nicolas General HospitalBuilt in the 18th century un-der Saint-Louis, it contains a 17th century chapel with a magnificent baroque altar-piece in carved wood. > When leaving the Saint-Ni-
colas wards, Rue Jeanne d’Arc, you are facing the Grosse Tour du Roi.
The King’s big TowerThe ruined 12th century royal dungeon.> Go back the way you came, cross the Rue de
Harlay and go down the steps in front of you.
Saint-Louis BridgeThe remains of the mediaeval bridge assumed to have been rebuilt in stone by Saint Louis in the 13th century. It was protected on the town side by an imposing gate, destroyed only in 1811, and on the Petit-Margny side by a fortified structure in front of which Joan of Arc felt into the Burgundians’ hands on 24 May 1430. This ancient bridge was demolished in 1735 after a new one was built on the orders of Louis XV.> Cross the Rue d’Austerlitz, you are in the Parc de Songeons.
Parc de SongeonsLocated in the former Hôtel de Songeons, it houses some arcades from the former Jacobin convent. > Follow the arbour in the rose garden.
Antoine Vivenel Study and Exhibition CentreThe Antoine Vivenel study and exhibition centre is a temporary exhibition space highlighting the Vivenel Museum’s collections as well as a place dedicated to the heritage trades.> When leaving, walk along the railing on your right to reach the Musée

Saint-Antoine churchBuilt between the 13th to 16th centuries, it has a magnificent flamboyant Gothic façade deco-rated with a rose and openwork handrails, the choir is from the same period. > Go back up the Rue Saint-Antoine to the right on the
church square. Cross the Place du Change as far as the beginning of the Rue des Lombards.
The salt storeThe great door with a pediment and bosses was designed by the architect Claude Nicolas Ledoux in 1784. > Continue along the Rue des Lombards, 50 metres far-
ther on on the right.
The old isolated HouseThis 15th century timber-fra-med house was then lived in by the Masters of the Bridge who controlled the river traffic during the 18th century. > Continue alone the Rue des
Lombards and turn left into the Rue des Cordeliers which will take you to the Place Saint-Jacques.
Saint-Jacques church (13th - 18th century)Joan of Arc came to pray there in 1430 on the morning of her capture. A royal pari-sh enriched with donations from Louis XV, it was then decorated with carved wood panelling, marble and stucco (a treasure of relics is exhi-bited there). > For a short visit, the Rue du
Dahomey will take you to the "17" Parc du Château. For a fuller visit (the ramparts garden and stud farm), cross the Place Saint-Jacques and turn left into the Rue Magenta then the Rue de Pierrefonds, at the second traffic light turn right into the Rue Vermenton then the Rue des Fossés on the right at 100 metres.
The rampartsA walk laid out as a garden where one can discover part of the ram-part which protected Compiègne in the 12th to 17th centuries. > Go back as far as the Rue Saint-La-
zare, turn right, walk along the Natio-nal Stud Farm whose entrance is in the first street on the left.
The Great Stables The royal Great Stables were built during the reign of Louis XV in 1738 by Gabriel for the royal and imperial horses. The National Stud occupied them from 1876 until 2016.Currently closed to the public, the Great Stables are being sur-veyed prior to upgra-ding the site in line with equestrianism requirements.
The Castle park of Compiègne (National Estate)Wandering along paths lined with old trees and ancient sculptures, breathe in the scents of an English-style garden with its romantic charm. Created under Napoleon 1, the park offers rich blooms in spring, a rose garden and poetic autumn walks. The spectacular four-kilometre perspective, the so-called Beaux-Monts drive, is a starting point for walks through one of the most beautiful forests in France.A tea room awaits you in the heart of the rose garden for a break and something to eat.> Leave the park by the same gate and return to the Castle by the right.
The Castle of Compiègne (National Museums)A residence designed by Louis XV, Compiègne was to become one of the most important royal and court residences during the summer and autumn. Napoleon 1 added its dazzling decor and Napoleon III made it a favoured place where he assembled a part of French and European society of the time. At Compiègne, the sumptuous state rooms and galleries reveal the private lives of so-vereigns and their lovers, from Napoleon 1 and Marie-Louise to Napoleon III and the elegant Eugé-nie. Within the Castle you can see:• The Emperor and Empress’s apartments, richly decorated and fur-nished, remaining just as Napoleon 1 or Napoleon III wanted them.• The museum of the Second Em-pire, collection of surprising rich-ness, moving reflection of a time that modernised France, in parti-cular in the area of the arts.• The National Car Museum, taking you into the fascinating history of transport, via one of the most beautiful collections of coaches and sedans of the 18th century right up to the beginnings of the motor car adventure.(times and conditions for visits on the palaisdecompiegne.fr website).> When leaving the Castel, take the Rue d’Ulm which runs along the left
side of the Castel to arrive at the Théâtre Impérial.
Imperial TheatreExceptional in terms of its volume and its acoustic qualities, this ar-chitectural gem is a mecca for music and lyrical art. The Imperial Theatre is the place to see and hear a repertoire spanning from the baroque era to the modern day, with a special focus on French sin-ging and music. It produces or helps to produce operas and musical theatre perfor-mances.> Return as you came and in
front of you is the Rue des Minimes which will take you to the Saint-Pierre-des-Mi-nimes church.
Saint-Pierre-des-Minimes churchThe oldest church in Compiègne (12th century), behind its Roman doors, nowadays it offers a fine area for art exhibitions and concerts.> To return to the town hall, continue along the Rue
des Minimes, then the Rue des Pâtissiers which is a continuation of it.
Memorial to Internment and the Deportation - Royallieu Camp> About 3 km from the town centre - 2 bis Avenue des Martyrs de la Liberté.A military barracks built in 1913 for the 54th Infantry Regiment, during the Second World War, the Royallieu camp became Frontstalag 122, the main German internment camp for the 45,000 unfortunates of all origins destined to be deported by the Nazi dictatorship. Not far from the monument created by the sculptor Muguet, since February 2008, three buildings of the former camp house the memorial which, thanks to new audiovi-sual technologies, bears witness to one of the worst tragedies of the 20th century.
Deportation Car MemorialThe Deportation Car Memorial, set in the station at Compiègne-Margny-lès-Com-piègne, traces the Deportation by rail and is intended as a memorial to the 45,000 prisoners, deported to the "death camps" from here, between 1942 and 1944, during the last World War. This is a supplement to the "Royallieu" Transit Camp in Compiègne (n°21), and shows just how the prisoners came here on foot guarded by the Nazi soldiers, and their living conditions during the terrible train journey. Two railway cars have been restored to their original state, true to the records of the time, and silhouettes and a number of films showing accounts by former deportees can be seen here.
The Glade of the Armistice> Approximately 6 km from Compiègne towards Soissons. In the heart of the Compiègne forest, carriage no 2419D, converted into an office, was where Marshal Foch, supreme commander of the Allied forces, received the German plenipotentiaries and pre-sented them with the text of the armistice of 1918 which marked the end of the First World War.
