Foundations of Early Childhood Special Education

    Explanation of the Standard:

An early childhood special education teacher must understand the foundations on early childhood

special education on which to begin their teaching. These foundations include knowledge in

understanding the central concepts, assessment tools and history and context of developmental delays

    and disabilities and medical conditions.

    Description of Supporting Artifacts:

The first artifact that I included for this standard is a power-point presentation that I put together on

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HEI). The second artifact that I included is a power-point

presentation on the various Anxiety Disorders that could affect a child.

    Analysis:

Both of these artifacts meet the requirements for this standard. Before being able to present either of

these power-points, one must first research the disorder or medical condition in order to gather the

information carefully and accurately. Even though these are just two different medical conditions of

disorders, these power-points show the steps it takes in order to gather information to understand a

condition that is found in children with developmental delays or disabilities.

    Synthesis / Interpretation:

There are many different medical conditions that can cause developmental delays and disabilities, being

able to create these power-points has helped me become more aware of the different conditions that

are out there that could qualify a child for special education. I have learned the importance of being able

to research and understand many of the different conditions that could affect a child. In the future I will

continue to research and develop a knowledge of many of the other medical conditions or disorders

that can cause developmental delays and disabilities in young children.
