Marktown Historic DistrictEast Chicago, Indiana

Since the early 1970s when research was being conductedto place the Marktown subdivision of East Chicago on the NationalRegister of Historic Places, an archive of reference materials hasbeen collected and preserved for future generations. So extensiveare the periodical references alone that a privately printed and in-dexed copy of the articles has been presented in book form titledMarktown In Print. As a companion of this book a text titled Mark-town On The Party Line was also issued in a very limited edition.

Beyond these two outstanding publications, the MarktownPreservation Society, Inc. has also issued a monthly newsletter be-ginning in December 2002. The newsletter is titled Marktown Updateand a comprehensive index of the newsletter as well as an archive ofall of the past issues can be found on this web site in the COMMU-NITY section. You will also find a series of PDFs of all of the scannedimages and text of Marktown on the Party Line.

Along with these items, we have included a listing of booksthat include at least reference to Marktown and key titles in refer-ence to early 20th century industrial housing and the English GardenCity Concept as promoted by Ebenezer Howard.

Over the years a number of video programs have either in-cluded reference to Marktown or have been created as educationaltools by the Marktown Preservation Society, Inc.

We have also made it a point of collecting various blueprintsand plans in reference to this most unique and endangered of neigh-borhoods.
