Happy New Year everyone!

I’ve never been as busy as I was over the Christmas holidays! I had spent a few weeks making a gingerbread house, mince pies and Christmas puddings with my children. I also decorated our home with recycling materials from our garden waste and packaging boxes and I felt exhausted at times. However, I am glad that our children enjoyed the experience and learnt how to enjoy the festive season with interest in recycling in their daily life.

For most of you, January is an important month to book your family holiday of the year. Whilst you are planning on the holiday, don’t forget to plan some annual learning and play activities for your children as well.

This month, we are introducing a new section called “Reader’s Corner” and it has lots of free taster and trial classes for you to enjoy – so sign up quickly to ensure your space. If you are interested in the pregnancy yoga classes or pre-school swimming classes on offer this month, take a look on page 20-21 and enjoy the great deals for the New Year!

Storytelling can be the one of most enjoyable times of the day for parents and young children. After a finishing a busy day, getting ready for bedtime is a gentle wind down for young families to share a special closeness.

Storytelling is a wonderful way to entertain and teach children, that enables you to build a closer bond with them. Whether it is reciting traditional stories or creating imaginative yarns, storytelling is the oldest oral art that is used to educate and inspire. More than just entertainment, stories can tell us who we were, where we came from, how we should treat each other.

Remember, great stories are as great as how they are told. As a first time storyteller to your children, they will learn a lot from your talking and reading. You will need to know how to make your story as interesting and engaging to them as possible.

Storytelling gives my children a chance to

let their imaginations fly

Badminton girls get a great startAt Badminton Junior School our warm and friendly family atmosphere, small class sizes and fully qualified staff ensure the perfect nurturing environment.

The classrooms are bright and spacious with lots of creative play equipment and areas for directed learning. The children also benefit from dedicated outdoor space, including a large secure adventure playground ideal for physical fun and a swimming pool on site.

The wide range of sporting facilities on site and being part of a larger school environment means there are lots of opportunities to mix with girls of different ages.

The school is always open which is a great help to working parents and our fees are realistic too - they are all inclusive, meaning most parents find them in line with pre-school childcare costs.

Storytelling, like real ale and slow food is experiencing a real resurgence in popularity. It’s real entertainment that tells a story in its simplest form and allows listeners to use their own imaginations. A good story, well told can either keep you on the edge of your seat or make you sit back in your chair and drift into another world. The experience of listening to live storytelling can be engaging, entertaining and profound – exercising the mind and touching the heart. Martin Maudsley, Director of Bristol Storytelling Festival

If you would like to find out what makes the difference between telling a good story and telling a really great one, you can enrol on one of many storytelling courses available or visit a storytelling event festival. Page 8: Redland and Cotham Living - January 2012

1) Find a story plot that involves a transformation Does the plot of your story provide enough varying moments to sustain interest? These variations in the plot can make a huge difference in keeping your children interested in their anticipation and expectation.

2) Storyteller’s sincerity Make believe starts with YOU! If a story is told unconvincingly or with divided attention, your little one will not be interested! Make sure you know your story well before you start and try not to do distracting things like answering phone calls, eating or playing music in the background during the story.

3) Lively charactersEven if your story plot is simple and maybe even predictable, having lively characters in the story can make your story truly unforgettable. By adding theatrical elements such as unique vocal expressions and even costumes, you can bring out a better ambience for your children.

4) Know your children Make sure children can relate to your story! Choose the appropriate topics of interest that will help you to engage with them. Think ahead and choose your story if your children might be more interested in motor racing adventures as oppose tales of rabbits and ponies.

5) Repetition of favourite storiesChildren love to listen their favourite stories time and again. Retelling their favourite stories will help them to start noticing more about the pattern and words of the story. You can encourage them to read with you and even if they can only read one single word on the page, it is the best way to participate in the storytelling process and share this intimate family time.

6) Ask questionsWhen reading stories to your young children, you can ask them open questions about the story such as ‘Why is Dogger is not eating?’ This will encourage your children to find out the answer from the pictures for clues to the story.

When we think of our children’s learning environment, the first impression would be a comfortable and happy classroom but beyond this, there is a whole world more to learn from. The concept behind the Forest School was established and developed in Denmark in 1980’s and became part of the Scandinavian education system. Introduced to the UK in the mid 1990’s, the philosophy of The Forest School Experience is to encourage and inspire children through positive outdoor experiences with an innovative educational approach to outdoor play and learning.

Archfield House Nursery in Cotham who has just celebrated its 25th anniversary recently introduced the Forest School experience for its pupils. Rebecca Clevett, Head of Archfield House Nursery comments; “In a time when news reports constantly inform us that children are becoming estranged from the natural world, the Forest School offers children the opportunity to reconnect with nature in a magical and stimulating environment”. “Our Forest School site is establishing itself at Ashton Court in liaison with the estates team and is also supported from

Andy from Bristol Forest School”. (www.bristolforestschool.co.uk)

In making a proper Forest School, the use of a local woodland is crucial to allow children to re-visit the forest over a prolonged period in establishing a special relationship with the site. Over time, they can witness the transformation through the seasons to really appreciate nature. The nursery is in the process of establishing visits on a regular basis to allow children to gain a sense of ownership and ease in the woodland environment so they will become enthusiastic about visiting ‘their’ woodland.

PriceMy friends and I did not need to pay as this was a free trial from Redland and Cotham Living. For a £12.99 all-you-can-eat dinner buffet, this is very reasonably priced and really good for friends gathering and celebrations.

FoodThere is a wide range on food selection, the Chicken Tikka Masala is flavoursome, the Tandoori skewers were tender and strong in spices,

Piri Piri Chicken was so great! I also tried some Oriental foods which I have never had before, Vietnamese rice noodles and Indonesia fried rice. The best part was the live cooking stations at each counter where I can see the chefs prepare my food as I order it.

Seating We were arranged to seat at a 8 people seating booth, but it was so cramped between seat and table and this was not convenient as you have to get up and revisit the buffet counters each time!

BEAUTY By Carole Hallam, Good Vibrations

Reflexology & Pregnancy

Remember your feet? It may be a while since you have seen them or managed to reach them so why not get someone else to give them a treat for you with the wonderful art of reflexology.

Reflexology has been around for over 4000 years, originating in Egypt and China. It was eventually recognised in the Western world in 1913 and developed in the 1930’s by Eunice Ingham who defined reflexology as it is practised today. The feet are a mirror image of the body and as gentle pressure is applied to the reflexes on the feet it creates harmony and balance, assists with the systems and structures of the body, relieves stresses, strains, tension and improves circulation.

It is a common misconception that reflexology is not safe during pregnancy but I am here to tell you it is! There are just a few instances where reflexology cannot be administered during pregnancy – they are:• Placentalabruption • Placentapraevia• Bleeding • Continuousvomiting• PicaSyndrome • HELLPSyndrome• Toxaemia:Pre-Ecclampsia-Ecclampsia• DVT(DeepVeinThrombosis)

But on the whole most people can reap the wonderful benefits of reflexology at this very special time.Pregnancy is one of the most important and momentous times a woman can experience in life. Hormonal changes occur dramatically, provoking an alteration in many physiological functions.

Reflexology offers an effective, friendly, safe and non-invasive answer to almost all of the conditions listed above. During pregnancy, reflexology treatments should be given on a regular basis. It will provide you with energies as a result of stimulating all of the systems of the body, therefore being able to heal yourself and feel more comfortable with your body. Ensure, when choosing your reflexologist, that they are qualified and experienced in treating pregnant clients. Some reflexologists will not treat anyone during their first trimester, although there are absolutely no links between reflexology and miscarriage this is purely a precautionary measure.

Reflexology can be used to help prevent, treat and alleviate the symptoms such as

•Anaemia •Anxiety•Appetiteregulation •Backache•Haemorroids •Insomnia•Muscularfatigue •Musculartension•Nauseaandvomiting •Oedema•Bloodpressureregulation (except cases of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia)•Constipationoranychangeinbowel movement pattern•TopreventDiabetescausedbypregnancy (Gestational Diabetes)•Urinarytractproblems (difficulty to urinate, cystitis, etc)
