Redistricting Question & Answer Factsheet 2-3-2010

I cannot read the maps clearly on the PowerPointpresentation. What can I do?

The PowerPoint that was presented at the Special BOE Meeting on 2/2/2010 in the

Intermediate School Auditorium has been posted on the school system website –   www.sheltonpublicschools.org  –  under “News Items”.

In addition –  individual elementary school zone attendance maps have been posted. Thesemaps are in a PDF format that allows you to “zoom in” on specific areas of a school’sattendance zone to enlarge sections of the map in order to read street names. Enlargementof the map causes no reduction in resolution quality and street names become clearly visible.

When will we know what time elementary schools will start and end their schooldays?

Currently the school system’s transportation department is working on downloading

individual school attendance zones into our transportation program. Once individual schoolpopulations are assigned we will begin to build the bus routes and assign specific buses to

each run for each school. When this task is complete our transportation department will bein a position to determine if all elementary schools can run on a single tier and time period. If this can occur – all elementary schools PreK – 4 will open and close their school day atthe same time. That timeframe is determined by the bus runs of the High School,Intermediate School and Perry Hill School. It is hoped that a transportation timeline can be

completed by the end of March 2010.

What elementary schools will the PreK programs be assigned to?

The current Pre-K classes will be assigned elementary schools once the transportationmaps are finalized. Factors in the Pre-K placement will include number of empty

classrooms at the school facility, length of bus routes, and teacher assignment.

Will we have an all day kindergarten next school year?

Unfortunately due to tight economic constraints in building the school system budget for

next school year, we will not be able to provide the opportunity for an “all day” kindergartenin 2010-11. However it remains the school system’s goal to accomplish this task in the

future when economic constraints are not so confining. “All day” kindergarten requires aclassroom for each section of kindergarten, appropriate bathroom facilities, and a full day pre-k certified teacher to accomplish this task.

What daycare facilities and services are available in my school’s attendance zone?

The Shelton Public School System does not advocate for any daycare provider – however if  you connect via web to the Connecticut Department of Health Website www.ct.gov and then“type” into the search box “child care” this will bring up a list of licensed day care providersin our town to contact and inquire as to whether or not they can service your childcareneeds.
