Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 17 Issue 21

Friday 28th July 2017

Dear Parents and Students,

The student wellbeing programme for Term 3 kicked off

last week with interesting and engaging seminars. The

Year 7 students heard from Brett Lee (not the cricketer)

about Cyber Safety and digital footprints, the Year 8 stu-

dents were once again motivated by Glen Geryn’s

―Chasing Greatness‖ talk and the Year 9 students en-

gaged in a talk about respect and good manners.

The popularity of singing at the school and the very high

standard resulted in the decision to split this year's vocal

competition over two nights. Monday evening 24th July

was the evening for the performances from our Primary

School and our Senior from Year 10 to Year 12.

The Senior Section was smaller but no less competitive

with some of our finest singers performing their HSC rep-

ertoire. Adam awarded a Highly Commended to year

10 student Lucy Achhorner who sang a Musical Theatre

number - Disneyland from the Musical 'Smile'. 3rd Place

was awarded to Charlotte Brinkworth singing 'My Heart is

as Black as Night’ by American Jazz artist Melody Gar-

dot. 2nd Place went to Adina Herz with her redition of

'Zeffiretti Lusinghieri' from Mozart's Opera 'Idomeneo'.

And with a distinctively individual interpretation of the

Jazz Standard 'Cry me a River' by Arthur Hamilton, Avital

Greenberg took out the Gold Medal Performance. We

look forward to Adam Player returning next Monday to

adjudicate the Intermediate Section.

The senior School Play, Animal Farm, was performed at

the Lend Lease Darling Quarter Theatre to rave reviews. I

include some of the emails received which sum up ex-

actly how everyone that I have spoken to felt about the

performance.

―It takes a lot to arouse my emotions however last night’s

performance really moved me.‖

―It was an extraordinary show! A professional production

in all aspects: imaginative set and costumes, powerful

music and lighting, and moving performances from the

actors. The students performed with such passion and

commitment to deliver an inspiring and thought–

provoking play. Congratulations to all involved‖

Page 2: @Reddam IN THIS ISSUE: Animal Farm Chess News: Final Round ... · Student Café, they needed to create wireframes to show how they believed the designed screens would work and then

―We were blown away by how amazing every actor was.

The set and lighting were also spectacular - such clever

use of space and everyday farmyard props to create

every different scene. It was a wonderful effort by every-

one involved‖.

―It was great to see all the hard work paying off in such a

professional and polished show. The play's story and its

themes were showcased by the outstanding performanc-

es of all the cast. We were also very impressed with the

costumes and lighting, it added so much to the whole

experience.‖

―Wow no words can describe last night’s performance,

it was sophisticated yet so engaging. It undeniably cap-

tured my attention and took my breath away. I was so

intrigued, mainly because of the effect of lighting, sound

and emotional portrayal the characters showed. It truly

aroused emotion within me and gave my family and I

goose bumps. The costumes were brilliantly done and

the students are all so talented, it did not feel like a

school play. If the play was not advertised on behalf of

Reddam House, any member of the public would have

never guessed the cast were still in school. My only regret

is that I did not come see it twice! It was truly incredible

and uplifting. It was so empowering when Clover started

crying, it looked so natural and professional and created

a swell of emotions inside of me. Brought tears to my

eyes. ―

Congratulations to the students on their performances

and take a bow Ms. Buzo and Mr Hodgson, who directed

the play.

Public Speaking at the Sydney Eisteddfod has seen our

students dominate the competitions. In the U12 section,

Julia Tymula and Frankie Nicklin were awarded Highly

Commended certificates and Zayne Gladsden from Year

6 won the Gold Medal.

In the U13 section, Harrison Power won the silver medal,

Isabella Devine the bronze and Highly Commended Cer-

tificates were awarded to Tim Senior Skinner and Aidan

Ruvinsky.

In the U14 section, Daniella Christelis was awarded the

silver medal, Aiden Katz the bronze medal and Highly

Commended Certificates were awarded to Emily Wang,

Katarina Vucic, Matthew Har and Leah Steinberg. Tyler

Davis was also awarded a Highly Commended Certificate

for his very moving speech on the Stolen Generation.

The Eisteddfod is not over yet - we still have more students

entered in the U18 section and Impromptu sections next

week. In other Public Speaking news Emily Wang and Zoe

Gross entered the Legacy Public Speaking Competition.

Zoe Gross was chosen to move through to the Regional

Finals (she was incredible) and Emily, who was amazing,

was unlucky not to.

We look forward to hearing about the Year 9 Art Retreat

to Bundanon when they return after a weekend of Art.

The week ahead:

Next Wednesday in Adelaide Hall, new to the Reddam

calendar is the Year 9 Visual Arts Showcase and Retreat

Information evening. This exciting new initiative gives

Year 9 Art students the experience to see their work on

display for the Reddam community before they depart

for the senior school. This exhibition is a fantastic oppor-

tunity for Year 7-8 students to get a glimpse of what the

elective Visual Arts course looks like. A selection of works

by high-performing artists in Year 7-10 will also be shown.

On the night, the art department will be launching their

impressive 2018 Art Retreat program with tours running to

Hamilton Island, Arnhem Land and Italy throughout next

year. Places for these tours are extremely limited and

bookings and deposits will be taken on the night, so if

your child is interested in attending a tour it is worth going

along.

Next Tuesday is the Senior Dance evening in Adelaide

Hall.

The Year 12 Drama Trial will be held at the Bondi Pavilion

on Thursday evening. See flyer.

Next week on Friday is the annual Athletics Carnival.

The emphasis will be on participation and students are

encouraged to give as many events a go as they can.

House colours should be worn. An email regarding this

carnival will follow from the Sport’s Department.

Have a great week ahead,

Dave Pitcairn

VISUAL ARTS

Visual Art students from Years 10, 11 and 12 have all visited

the Museum of Contemporary Art this week. They have

thoroughly enjoyed investigating the eclectic range of

works on exhibition and being able to relate the varied

approaches the art making to their own works.

INFORMATION & SOFTWARE TECHNOLOGY

YEAR 9 CANTEEN REDESIGN PROJECT

In Term 2 the IST students were faced with a hypothetical

redesign project - putting the Canteen online to optimize

stock levels and ensure that lunch ordering and collection

becomes a smoother process. The students had to write a

proposal of what they intended to create, structure the

information and demonstrate how the flow of information

would work, including connecting to Parent Lounge and

Student Café, they needed to create wireframes to show

how they believed the designed screens would work and

then they had to actually create a final design. All while

also creating a project timeline for the project as well as

doing a cost analysis of what their time was worth while

factoring in the costs of technical equipment to get the

job done.

Below are some of the screens from the many solutions

they devised:

CHESS NEWS: FINAL ROUND

Last Friday, we traveled to Sydney Grammar School in the

heart of Sydney to play in our postponed and final Inter-

school Eastern Conference Junior Chess League match.

Normally, I would write of their efforts in great detail, keep-

ing the result till the final moment. I have no desire to do

so this week. We lost. 4-0.

What I would like to do instead is reflect on the pleasure

and pride a have experienced over the last term watch-

ing the Reddam House Junior Team play their best week

in week out, starting with our ever present and biggest

supporter Victor Xu. We would never have had a team if it

weren't for him. He was in from day one and was always

ready to do any job we needed of him. He didn’t get a

chance to play as much as he wanted but something tells

me he will be a permanent member next year if he wish-

es. Daniel Zhang Tirta was also present throughout the

season and we thank him for his willingness take a back

step while still being part of the team.

Another member, our most regular 4th chair, Gabriel Staf-

ford was a constant battler and fierce competitor and in

need of congratulations, largely due to his horror run of

freak 4th chair opponents. It is a strategy among other,

less reputable schools, to place a strong player in 4th

chair to gain an easy point. Without suggesting this hap-

pened… it may have.

Our 3rd chair player, Rachel Phillips has become some-

what of a celebrity on the circuit. Not only for being a

talented and a relentless battler but also because of

her rarity. So few young ladies seem to compete in the

interschool league and to have had Rachel show up

week after week and kick butt regularly is something

everyone can be proud of and support. As one of the

three original players in the team, Rachel is an inspira-

tion to people everywhere for believing in yourself and

never letting others say what you can and can’t do.

Our Captain, 2nd chair and final original member Rhys

Leong is a talented player but also a great leader. He

always knew who we were playing, reminded the team

of meetings and made sure all members were ready.

Rhys travels a long way to come to school which makes

his involvement all the more impressive. He may be short

in stature but I would not be surprised if we saw him

walking tall on a podium or victory stage sometime

soon.

Finally but in no way least of all we have our 1st chair

player, Yoni Herz who carried more of the team than he

would probably admit. He always played the toughest

opponents and never gave up no matter the odds. A

busy young man; he has a million and one responsibility

but Reddam Chess almost always came first, for which

we say thank you.

At the end of the day we did not make the next round

(I don’t think) but as a team they played their best and

represented Reddam House with pride and dignity. We

are lucky to have had them and I was lucky to have

been able to witness and record their journey. Thank

you and till next year, farewell.

DEBATING NEWS

This term we will be piloting a new approach to debating

at Reddam, these changes include:

- All debating coaching for all year groups moving to

2pm on Saturday at the Middle School campus.

- Coaching will now run for 2 hours to allow time for more

practice debates.

- A new 2v2 Debating format instead of 4v4 or 3v3.

-More time for one on one coaching and individual feed-

back.

- Introduction of advanced skills including ―first principles‖.

- Starting next term other schools will be invited to join

and compete.

We are also adopting a university style model to coach-

ing:

- Relaxed social atmosphere.

- Students choose the issues they wish to debate.

- Food and music consumption encouraged (pizza pro-

vided).

Our aim is to build Reddam’s debate team into elite

communicators, ambassadors for the school and leaders

in the wider community. This will include engaging with

the best and brightest from other schools to test our abili-

ties against in future terms. Students will be encouraged

to mix across schools and year groups to discuss policy

ideas and views for how to best build a brighter future.

If you son or daughter is interested in studying politics,

law, communications, media or public relations, this train-

ing should be regarded as essential. The coaching ses-

sions will be designed to nurture beginners, while also

providing time for enriching more experienced students

with advanced skills.

We know Saturdays are precious hours for students and

parents; we also know that some Saturday sports may

conflict with the new time. However, we hope you will

feel the way we do; that these skills are so valuable and

unique, that they are worth the commitment and prioriti-

zation.

We understand that some of our existing debaters may

already have commitments, and we apologies that we

can’t find a time that suits everyone. For those of you

ready to join us we look forward to seeing you this Satur-

day the 29th July at 2pm.

MUSIC NEWS

The popularity of singing at the school and the very high

standard resulted in the decision to split this year's vocal

competition over two nights. Monday evening 24th July

was the evening for the performances from our Primary

School and our Senior from Year 10 to Year 12.

Our adjudicator was internationally travelled Operatic

Tenor Adam Player. Adam has performed in operatic

works in Australia and across Europe, the UK and Ameri-

ca. His repertoire traverses from Baroque to the late ro-

mantic works of Wagner.

Adam commented on the uniform high standard of our

singers and admitted that awarding places was an ex-

tremely difficult task.

In the Primary Section there were 14 students who sang.

Mae Angus from Year 3 was our youngest singer, with

Jack Barton and Natasha Green from Year 4 our next

youngest. There were other excellent performances

from Akash Thomas, Sam Weidler, Sophie Marcolina

and Nathan Galper. Highly Commended certificates

were awarded to: Isolde Rydge, Alice Mitchell, Paloma

Nicholas and Andrew Lok. Commenting on the confi-

dence and musicality of all the performers the adjudi-

cator said that his decision for places had to be based

on the 'story telling' ability of the singers and so 3rd

Place was awarded to Coco Veksner-Shaw, 2nd Place

to Zoe Topper and the Gold Medal to Lillian Ogrin.

3rd Place

was awarded to Charlotte Brinkworth singing 'My Heart

is as Black as Night by American Jazz artist Melody Gar-

dot. 2nd Place went to Adina Herz with her redition of

'Zeffiretti Lusinghieri' fro Mozart's Opera 'Idomeneo'. And

with a distinctively individual interpretation of the Jazz

Standard 'Cry me a River' by Arthur Hamilton, Avital

Greengerg took out the Gold Medal Performance.

We all look forward to Adam Player returning next Mon-

day to adjudicate the Intermediate Section.
