Activity Meeting
Wednesday 1 July at 7.30 pm
Please note change of venue
The Red Tag Fly Fishers’ Club will conduct the Wednesday 1 July meeting in the Lounge Bar of the Grandview Hotel Fairfield on the of corner Heidelberg Road and Station St - parking available via Station St.
The theme for the night will be a ‘Liars’ Night’.
This should be a great night of fabulous fishing stories (sometimes true), with top secret fishing spots revealed, killer fly patterns disclosed, that will provide lots of fine entertainment.
Finger food will be supplied by the club, and washed down with drinks at Bar prices.
Meals are also available for those who would like to eat before/during the meeting.
We would like to hear stories from our members.
We ask a simple question
and that is all we wish:
Are fishermen all liars?
Or do only liars fish?

July Fly Fishing Trip
Our next scheduled trip is to the Marysville Trout Farm on Saturday 4 July at 10am for a catch and release day. This is a great opportunity for our novice and experienced fly fishers to have some fun and catch trout during the closed season. The entry fee is $5 per person and you will have to pay for any fish that you accidentally kill. We have had similar trips previously and it has been a great success without killing any fish.
There are two musts if you wish to attend:
· be able to cast (if you can put a line on the water that’s fine)
· use barbless hooks (hooks will be de-barbed before fishing commences)
They are going to place us on a pond away from the usual ponds and where there are some larger fish. The ground may be muddy so take up some suitable boots and perhaps some weather gear. It may not go ahead if it is pouring down rain but showers should be fine.
You can register on line at — www.redtagflyfishers.com.au then go to Trip Registration just under the event on the home page —
or call Peter Jamvold, trip coordinator, on 9639 1717.
We are looking forward to a good turn out.
Regards
Bill Jackson
PS: If you need some casting tuition to get up top speed please let me know.

A Trip to the Inflowing Rivers of Eildon
End of season snuck up again and I had one last opportunity for a fish on the rivers
In particular I was keen to get up to the inflowing rivers of Eildon. We had had pretty cool, actually damn cold, weather leading up, and a bit of rain. Not that much, but hopefully enough to get a few fish running.
The call went out for a Friday jaunt, and Niki was able to get the day off, so we met at the Kalkallo Caltex at 6 in the morning and headed up together.
The most important stop was the Mansfield Bakery. It was open fortunately (you can still see the tear stains and scratch marks on the glass from when I arrived just after it closed one Friday on a weekend trip into Sheepyard Flat - yes it is that good) and a Shepherd's Pie and Coffee later we were one our way to Jamieson.
Below the confluence of the Goulburn and Jamieson is a nice stretch where I hoped to find a couple of pre-spawners heading up river.
Niki and I both tied on a couple of bead head woolly buggers and started swinging them through the current.
Niki was using a standard floating line and was covering the water well, casting almost directly across the river and swinging the flies down through the current. The bead heads bring the flies into the strike zone.
I was trying a new line out that I was lucky enough to win from Simon Gawesworth at the Fly Fisher info evening the previous month. It was a Scandi line designed for spey casting. I used it with a 10 foot 6 weight, and the rod loaded up really well. There aren't too many situations where I can think spey is that useful in Victoria, but this is certainly one of them. It's a pretty effortless way to keep putting the flies in the zone.
About half way down the run I was onto a fish that hit the flies as the line was almost straight below me. The fish was in the current so felt pretty strong, but probably wasn't bigger than a pound or so. It came of the hook after about 10 second. Meanwhile Niki had hooked a couple of fish, but these too had dropped of the hook before landing them.
After that we tried the Howqua for a little while. It was running crystal clear and not so high, so I didn't feel our prospects were that good, but we gave it a go anyway.
Swinging the flies below a bend running into a big pool and I had another fish on. Again not that big, but a good fighter. After a couple of moments on the bank for a photo, he was back into the water for another day.
We both had to get back early, so that was it for the day and for the season. At least as far as rivers are concerned. Mike Nolan
RED TAG NEWSLETTER JULY 2015 4
Get to know your fellow Reg Taggers'
With John Trengove
What year did you start fly fishing?
I started fly fishing circa 1972.
What year did you join the Club?
I joined Red Tag in September 1994.
Driving home from work one Friday night in June 1994 and listening on the radio to the Rex Hunt fishing show, I heard that the Australian Fly Casting Championships were to be held in the southern suburbs of Melbourne. Had no idea that such an event took place! I thought it would be worth attending, and on arriving home mentioned it to my wife Win.
Enquiries at the Box Hill Compleat Angler provided the exact venue, and the following weekend saw me enthusiastically on the way, early on a Saturday morning with cut lunch, and warm clothes, to attend this auspicious event.
In my mind’s eye I had pictured a large crowd, queuing to get into a grassed arena, surrounded by a white picket fence, with the casting taking place out in the middle. I wanted to be early to get a good seat, and not be back too far. I had even taken my field glasses! On the way I was pondering how much it would cost to gain entry.
Ignorance has its own rewards. It turned out there were no crowds, no charge, not even a picket fence, but open parklands with a small group of contestants competing in distance casting, and virtually no spectators. Despite this non-conformance of my mental picture, I had a most enjoyable day, and marvelled at the casters’ skills. I returned the next day to see the accuracy casting on water, and was handed some information about the Red Tag Fly Fishers’ Club. Membership soon followed. Such was my beginning with Red Tag. My association with tournament casting has remained an ongoing challenge ever since.
First fly rod and reel?
My first fly rod was a fibre glass Jarvis Walker, 6–7 weight, 8’ 6’’, purchased at Myers city store for $18.00. So excited, I showed it to my friend on the train on the way home. My first fly reel was purchased from the Melbourne Sports Depot, a 6 weight Fuji, which is still in use, given a few repairs.
Favourite river?
The Murrumbidgee River alongside ‘Bolaro’ Stock Station, near Adaminaby, New South Wales.
Most exotic placed you’ve fished?
The Snowy Mountains of New South Wales. I visited these mountains, at least once every year, for over thirty years.
Biggest fish?
My biggest fish is 6¼ lb brown trout, caught in Lake Eucumbene, December 2013, on a Red Setter fly, which I had tied and fished for the first time. One cast, one fish! Beginners luck!
Best thing about fly fishing?
Fishing in a group of one, sharing with fellow members the nightly camp fire and having a chat about Spot X.
Best advice for beginners?
Don’t buy any gear until you have spoken to someone who knows. Learn how to cast from someone who knows, and do a little at least, or a lot, of tournament casting.
Little known facts? Still have my first fly vest, unwashed, bought from Turvilles’.

Wet fly retrieve when fishing a lake
Philip Weigall gave an interesting talk concerning stalking trout at the Flyfisher on the evening of Thursday 11 June 15.
One of many items considered was the retrieve of a wet fly when fishing a lake.
Put simply, Philip believes that the retrieve should imitate a non escaping food source given that it’s all about the trout making an energy profit from any prey it captures i.e. energy consumed over energy expended.
He suggested a slow figure of eight retrieve was the best method for a wet fly.
This method was duly applied the following afternoon at the Upper Coliban reservoir in warm/ bright conditions with immediate results - a 35 cm brown trout.
It may have been coincidence - it may not.
Either way it’s worth a try.
A few items provided by Travis Dowling, Executive Director, Fisheries Victoria
Under new arrangements to be introduced later this year, recreational fishers who purchase a 1 or 3 year licence online will receive a plastic licence in the mail.
Konongwootong Reservoir’s fishing facilities are being upgraded. The 1st stage of 3 will improve access to the non powered boat ramp for completion in July 2015. This water storage is located in the Grampians.
Stocking Report - most of these trout were yearling fish which should grow to a catchable size over the next 12 months and all released during May 2015.
