Mrs Garrett on the birth of her baby son, Hector who was born 22nd February, weighing 7lbs 4oz.

Mrs Mallam on the birth of her daughter, Verity Elizabeth, who was born 24th April , weighing 8lb 5oz.

Both mothers and babies are doing well and we hope you don’t have too many sleepless nights ahead of you!

Miss Bennett and Chris Waldock who were

married in St Mary ’s Church, Norton on 6th April and enjoyed a wonderful wedding reception at Seaham Hall.

WELCOME TO THE LATEST EDITION OF RED HOUSE TIMES. THERE HAS ONCE AGAIN BEEN A HUGE RANGE OF ACTIVITIES IN WHICH THE CHILDREN HAVE BEEN INVOLVED.

One of the highlights of the spring term was the PTA’s fashion show demonstrating not only the creativity and conf idence of the children but the close working relationships between children their teachers and their parents, one of the hallmarks of a successful and child centred school.

I am sure that al l our readers wil l enjoy reliving and exploring the diversity that is Red House.

EASTER WORKSHOP A fantastic Easter workshop was organised by the PTA which allowed children from Nursery to Year 3 to further their drama skil ls by performing theatre extracts.

Performances included Oliver’s ‘Food

Glor ious Food’, Mar y Poppins ‘Lets

Go Fly a Kite’ , ‘Seussical ’ and ‘Mati lda’ .

The children thoroughly enjoyed the

The Easter tombola in the Prep and

Senior School was a great success,

before we knew it the eggs were gone!

LET’S GO ON AN EASTER HUNT... BUT WHO’S THAT HOP, HOP, HOPPING ALONG?

Nurser y and Reception loved searching

for hidden Easter eggs in the garden

and they even got a surpr ise visit from

the Easter Bunny, who was immediately

greeted with lots of smil ing faces and

hugs from al l the children!

PTA FUNDRAISING & EVENTS

RED HOUSE DOES RED NOSE DAY!

Over £1,160 was raised for Red Nose Day. Pupils in the Main School enjoyed a wear ‘red’ theme and organised nail painting and cake sales. Both children and staff in the Nursery & Infants came in fancy dress!

They al l had amazing outfits especial ly the

mini 118 118! They also held a cake sale

and ended the day with each year group

performing br i l l iant dance routines, which

included hits such as Macarena, Superman

and Big Fish Litt le Fish!

The final performance of the day was by the

Nurser y & Infant staff who danced to the

YMCA – for anyone that hasn’t seen the

FAIRTRADE TUCK SHOP - TASTY TREATS!

Fair trade tuck shops were held at the

Nurser y & Infants with pupil council

members from reception and Year 1 on

hand to sel l tasty treats. Also Year 4

children held their fir st tuck shop at the

Main School. Both events were a great

success so there wil l be a lot more treats to

look forward to!

The last week of term was an extremely busy time with lots of ‘eggscellent’ activities taking place to celebrate Easter.

The annual Easter egg competit ion meant that the two dinner

hal ls were fi l led with food of a specific type – EGGS (but not

ones that you would want to eat!) . The children from Nurser y

through to Year 6 put their ar tist ic ski l ls to the test to create an

array of amazing eggs. The competit ion was tough but winner s

from each year group at the Prep & Senior School were eventual ly

selected (pictured r ight) with the overal l winner

being James Norr is . Winner s from each year

group at the Nurser y & Infants were also chosen;

congratulations go to Poppy, Archie , Joshua,

Amelie , Joseph, James, Max, Emma, Thomas,

Maisy, Dominique , Eddie , Fraser and Will iam. All

final ists received big chocolate Easter eggs!

WELL DONE TO EVERYONE THAT TOOK PART THERE WERE LOTS OF ‘EGGSTRAVAGANT’ CREATIONS!

Congratulations to everyone who took their spring term grade exams.

Several pupils achieved a distinction and these were Alice Butterfield and Ben McManus (grade 1 piano), together with Kathr yn Woolfal l (grade 2 piano), Stel la Door is (grade 3 viol in) and El la Pear son (grade 1 saxophone).

Well done to Kaisey Elder who passed her musical diploma exam with f lying colour s, to Aditi Rangan who recently took her grade 7 piano exam and also Gi Dong Park who achieved a distinction in grade 8 piano.

A special mention goes to Kate Parkinson who was recently involved in the Stockton Stage Society’s production of ‘Annie’ at the Forum in Bi l l ingham.

MUSIC ACHIEVEMENTS

IT’S EXCITING TIMES FOR THE RED HOUSE RACING TEAM AS THEY BEGIN THE NEXT PHASE OF THEIR CARS’ DEVELOPMENT. THE TEAM, CONSISTING OF BOTH GIRLS AND BOYS OF ALL AGES, HAVE ALREADY BEGUN TO STRIP DOWN THE ELECTRICALLY POWERED RACING

CAR TO MAKE IT FASTER AND MORE RELIABLE.

They wil l be building in aerodynamics and making a range of

mechanical changes to tr y and secure a winning place in the next

race at Croft Circuit in July. Here they wil l face sti f f competit ion from

schools across the UK.

The developments to the car s have al l been made possible due to

the continued suppor t and investment by Phusion (an international

engineer ing firm) Francis Brown (a leading provider of fabr ications

and engineer ing) and Greenpower (an educational trust set up to

encourage children to pur sue career s in engineer ing).

GREENPOWER ELECTRIC CAR RACING

INTERMEDIATE MATHS CHALLENGE 2013

All pupils from Year 11 and some children from Year 10

sat the Intermediate Maths Challenge.

Over 200,000 pupils from across the UK took par t in the chal lenge ,

which consisted of an hour long paper designed to encourage

mathematical reasoning.

We achieved some extremely good results:

Year 11 - two gold, four silver and six bronze awards.

Year 10 - two gold, f ive silver and seven bronze awards.

Congratulations to ever yone for an outstanding achievement.

WATERSTONES BOOK REVIEWS LOCAL LEGENDS LAMDA

Pupils were delighted to be invited by

Water stones to wr ite book reviews to be

displayed in their local stores.

Children from the Nurser y through to

Year 11 al l enjoyed taking par t in the

excit ing project.

Children from Year s 4-6 had a fantastic t ime

with stor ytel ler Adam Bushnell learning

about local legends.

They especial ly enjoyed dressing up and

explor ing al l the different items that Adam

had brought. It cer tainly made the stor ies

come to l i fe!

Nurser y and Infant pupils excelled in

the schools fir st ever entr y for the

London Academy of Music & Dramatic

Ar ts examinations. All pupils achieved a

distinction which is a truly outstanding

achievement.

Congratulations to Isaac, Olivia and Joseph for winning

the regional heat of the ESU (English Speaking Union)

Public Speaking competition, which was held at The

Masonic Lodge, Gateshead.

Six schools in total entered the competit ion. Isaac was our Speaker,

Olivia was our Questioner and Joseph was our Chairper son and

they chose the topic: “Young people should be al lowed to become

professionals in spor t and the performing ar ts”.

Due to their outstanding performance they were

announced the winner s!

Mrs Roberts set the pupils of Year 6 an exciting project – to come up with a product, make it, sell it and choose a charity for their proceeds to go to.

Their first task was to come up with a team name and then prepare a business plan to present to Mr Taylor, who invested £10 to help set up their business. Pupils used the internet to complete market research and word processing skills to compose the proposal.The next task involved advertising the product which saw some teams using ‘Publisher’ to create posters whilst others chose email to distribute order forms. Pupils also devised excel

spreadsheets to keep their accounts in order.After producing and selling their products to pupils and staff the teams entered the boardroom (AKA Mrs Roberts classroom!) to reveal how much money they had raised. They reviewed their own performance and discussed how it could have been improved. This was an extremely productive project and it was wonderful to see the children so inspired. The project not only brought out the entrepreneurs of the class but strengthened everyone’s ICT skills, salesmanship, teamwork and organisation.Luckily nobody was in the firing line - so they are all definitely hired!!

The standard of entries for the annual ‘Red House Has Got Talent’ was extremely high this year. We even had our own ‘Talent’ judges; Mrs Auty, Mr Crewe, Mr Frank and Mr Middleton, who gave great feedback to each of the acts on their performance .Entr ies were received from al l year groups and included piano playing, singing, gymnastics, cup playing and even break dancing from the teletubbies! The highl ight and winning performance of the show was given to the Year 11 for their fantastic music medley from the decades.

Well done to Year 11 who organised the Talent Show. They promoted the event, managed the entr ies and hosted the show. The event raised £162.84 which wil l go to Hands of Love .

Everyone was treated to

a specially choreographed

production, which saw over

300 children ‘strutting their

stuff ’! All the pupils enjoyed

showcasing their designs, which

looked amazing on the catwalk.

Even the younger children from

the Nursery & Infants struck a

pose and wowed the audience.

The evening show opened with

a spectacular performance of

Skyfall by a Year 10 ensemble,

comprising of Gi Dong Park,

FLIP, FLIP, HOORAY! Children at the Nurser y &

Infant School braved the

ver y cold weather and took

par t in their annual Shrove

Tuesday Pancake Race . The

children al l had great fun

tr ying to f l ip their pancakes,

with many a pancake and

chef ’s hat ending up on the

f loor!

FIERY DRAGONSIn preparation for the Chinese New Year and as par t of their

Fire topic , Year 2 made dragons. They created their designs,

made a l ist of al l the mater ials they would need and then

came the best par t - making them!

LOVE SCROLLS

Children in Year 3R made wonderful love scrolls and inside

they wrote an ‘ode to mum’.

We hope al l the mums enjoyed reading them on Mother’s

Day!

GOOD WORK CERTIFICATESChildren were presented with cer tificates in assembly for

their good work. Well done everyone!

Children from the Nursery & Infants performed a wonderful Mother’s Day service to a church full of proud parents. The children sang beautiful songs and excellent readings were

given by Matthew, Robyn, Jasmine and Lucy. A fantastic sketch

was narrated by Emma and Danny and performed by Lydia,

George , Mia, Alex and Mrs Reeves. The children enjoyed

giving their mother’s daffodils and Ben finished the ser vice

with a lovely prayer.

Over £200 was raised from the col lect ion which

was donated to Zoë’s Place, in Middlesbrough.

Well done to ever yone for your excellent performance .

MOTHER’S DAY SERVICE

FIRST STEPS TOWARDS.. .

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARDAFTER SEVERAL WEEKS OF CAREFUL

PLANNING, THIRTY PUPILS FROM YEAR

10 SET OFF TO THE REETH AREA OF

THE YORKSHIRE DALES. THEY WERE

PUTTING INTO PRACTICE WHAT

THEY HAD BEEN LEARNING IN THE

CLASSROOM IN ORDER TO WORK

TOWARDS THEIR DUKE OF EDINBURGH

(DOE) BRONZE AWARD.

Preparations for their 12 km walk involved learning about

contour s, features, footpaths, br idleways, how to use the scale

of a map, how to pack a rucksack and the essential foods that

need to be included.

The DoE weekend was a great success and pupils enjoyed the

chal lenge of seeing for the fir st t ime how the routes that they

had planned actual ly matched the terrain and landscape .

“We all arr i ved early at school on Saturday morning ready for our practice walk. After having our bags checked, we made our way to our minibuses and set of f on our journey to Reeth. When we arri ved we split of f into our four groups and started our route.

We were very independent in our indi vidual groups. We took turns leading; using map reading ski l ls we had learned at school and the route cards we had planned prior to the walk. The walk was very muddy and I think everyone fel l over at least once! Our group was particularly pleased as we managed to navigate a very dif f icult section of the route very well and as a team, the f irst group to do so in four years!

When we eventually arri ved back in Reeth, we had some free time to relax and recuperate, whilst we waited for al l of the groups to arri ve back. When we were al l reunited, everyone sounded l ike they had had a fantastic t ime, and each group had plenty of stories to tel l . I think we al l enjoyed the day thoroughly and we can ’t wait for our next walk soon!”

THE BOYS’ U11 TEAM PERFORMED EXTREMELY WELL AT THE NORTH FINALS AT LEEDS UNIVERSITY.

In the group stages they beat the two North West

representatives, Kirkham School (1-0) and Kings School

Chester (2-1). These impressive wins secured our place

in the semi-f inal against St. Olaves, York however on the

day this team proved stronger and they went on to win the

tournament. Well done to the Red House team for reaching

the semi-f inals.

CONGRATULATIONS TO YEAR 10 FOR WINNING THE STOCKTON DISTRICT INDOOR HOCKEY LEAGUE.

The score was 2-2 at half t ime and 7-2 at ful l t ime! A

nervous f irst half but al l players l i fted their game and the

f irst goal in the second half seemed to raise conf idence

levels. It is a tremendous achievement to win the league and

this is the f irst t ime they have l i fted this particular shield.

Well done everyone.

CONGRATULATIONS TO YEAR 11 ON WINNING THE INDOOR HOCKEY FINAL 8-2 AGAINST YARM SCHOOL.

A SUPERB TEAM PERFORMANCE!

Year 7 girls reached the f inals at the Stockton District

Hockey League, although we came runners up it was a solid

team ef fort.

ANOTHER EXCELLENT RESULT FOR THE GIRLS’ U16 IN WINNING THE CLEVELAND COUNTY OUTDOOR HOCKEY LEAGUE.

THE FIRST OF THE ORIENTEERING EVENTS WAS HELD AROUND THE CHALLENGING TERRAIN OF ERRINGTON WOODS.

It was a technical ly tr icky cour se which proved difficult for some

runner s, whilst other s managed to excel . Matthew Ward, Ashly

Locker and Jack Craggs came in 5th place on the white pr imar y route

and just behind them were Michael Chilver s, Jamie Darnton and

Ethan Brown achieving 6th place . The team was placed 3rd out of the

6 teams. Phoebe White was a highly creditable 12th on the harder

orange cour se . The lower secondar y team came 2nd out of 5 schools.

The second event, at Coatham Woods, saw some pupils unfor tunately

disquali fied due to some navigational issues! However Jamie Darnton

and Ethan Brown managed to find their way and had a br i l l iant run

achieving 2nd place . Just behind, and on his own, came Will iam Baker

3rd and again ver y close behind was Josh Taylor and Alex Greenaway

in 4th spot. El la Pear son did ver y well on her own in 6th and

Matthew Ward, Jack Craggs and Ashly Locker finished 9th. The team

came 2nd on the white cour se . Jess Hibber t and Alice Til ly were a

pleasing 19th on the yel low cour se and helped that team achieve 2nd

out of 5 teams.

THE ANNUAL U9 NETBALL TOURNAMENT WAS THE FIRST NETBALL FIXTURE EVER FOR ALL THE GIRLS AND WE WERE OUTSTANDING!

A tremendous team performance with goals from Franscesca (1) Li ly

(1) Lauren (2) and a special mention goes to Iyrah – who was a great

captain and led by example scor ing a fantastic 9 goals throughout the

tournament which was a tremendous achievement! Impressive set of

results: 5-0 win over Durham High, 3-0 win over Teesside High and

2-0 win over St Olaves. The final was a ver y tough match and on this

occasion we came runner s up. Congratulations for getting so far and

well done to al l the gir ls for playing br i l l iantly.

Other outstanding netbal l achievements include:

• Stockton District Tournament Y7A winner s, Y7B runner s up and Y8 came 3rd in the round.

• Barnard Castle Tournament - Y7A winners. We played against some of the best netbal l schools in the area and we delivered an excellent performance .

• Stockton Netball Challenge Cup Y7 winner s, Y8 runner s up, Y9 winner s, Y10 winner s and Y11 runner s up.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR YEAR 7 GIRLS WHO PERFORMED EXCEPTIONALLY WELL IN THEIR RACE AT THE STOCKTON CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS.

pr imar y, we won the U-9

race , the U-10 and U-11

races. This meant that

we retained the shield for the

third consecutive time! The best performances came from Michael

Chilver s, who won the overal l race , Tom Hearmon who came a ver y

pleasing 4th, and Matthew Ward came 5th. Sapphire Locker was the

best placed gir l in 11th.

YORK NATIONAL RAILWAY MUSEUM

As part of their topic on transport children in Year 1 went on an exciting trip to the York National Railway Museum.

The children learned about the different

locomotives and were even lucky enough to

get a r ide on the miniature diesel train! They

took par t in a workshop cal led ‘Clickety Clack’

and enjoyed dressing up as Victor ian children.

Nursery children had a great time at Mima in Middlesbrough.

They saw tradit ional works of ar t and

had lots of fun dressing up and creating

human por traits! They l istened to a

modern piece of ‘sound ar t’ and finished

the tr ip by creating their ver y own ‘sound

ver sus noise’ performance .

WHAT A PERFORMANCE - MIDDLESBROUGH THEATREChildren from Year 3 were invited to Middlesbrough Theatre to meet members of the Young Opera Venture, who were rehearsing for their performance of ‘The Marriage of Figaro’.

They enjoyed being enter tained by the character s of

Marcell ina and Doctor Bar tolo, who sang a wonderful

duet. The children also performed a song from the

opera and some children even performed solos.

JORVIK & THE DIG Year 3 visited the Jorvik and the DIG

as part of their topic on the Vikings.

The children enjoyed a r ide through a Viking

vi l lage , exper iencing al l the sights and smells

of the time - some were more pleasant than

other s! At the DIG, they learnt about Viking

weaponr y and even took par t in a mock

battle against the Anglo Saxon Monks!

They enjoyed being archaeologists,

searching the ground for Viking

remains and ar tefacts.

BARLEY HALLChildren from Year 4 had a bril l iant

time at Barley Hall learning about a

merchant’s l i fe at the end of the 15th

century.

They exper ienced a lesson in a Tudor school

room, made Tudor soap and even had the

chance to dress in Tudor clothes.

HANCOCK MUSEUMReception visited the Hancock

Museum in Newcastle to learn more

about their topic on dinosaurs.
