THAT’S NEATTHOUSANDS OF SCHOOL CHILDREN SUBMITTED THEIR WORK FOR THE STOKESLEY SHOW HANDWRITING COMPETITION. OUR PUPILS’ MAGNIFICENT HANDWRITING AND PRESENTATION MADE THEM STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD.

Congratulations to Keer thika who was awarded second pr ize , Ashton who came third and Edie who was ver y highly commended.

We believe that handwr iting is an extremely impor tant l i fe ski l l . It aids the learning of spell ing, the pace of a chi ld’s work but most impor tantly improves their self-esteem and al lows them to view themselves as a wr iter.

We therefore devote time to ensur ing that each child develops a style that wil l enable them to wr ite f luently.

MRS JONES AND PUPILS IN YEAR 5 HAVE BEEN BUSY SUPPORTING THE ‘VOTE FOR BOB’ CAMPAIGN. MRS JONES EXPLAINS WHY:

We strive to ensure that all of our pupils recognise the importance of the natural

world and all its inhabitants. The ‘Vote for Bob’ campaign is a vote for nature, and it is up to us to help spread the word and awareness of the world around us. We wanted to create awareness so that we could get as many people as possible joining the ‘Bob Squad’ to help Bob make a real difference.

We began ‘Vote for Bob’ work at the star t of the Autumn term and it escalated from there . Other teacher s and pupils got involved with cake

stal ls , poster s, assemblies, sock puppets, technology mechanisms and even a squir rel cookie cutter was made by the school’s ver y own 3D pr inter! Many pupils were unaware that they could vote , as they thought they were too young, so we made iPads avai lable at the cake stal l so they could register. Ever yone left proudly wear ing their ‘Vote for Bob’ sticker s, promising to go home and encourage other s in their famil ies to vote too.

We decided to let Bob know how successful the campaign had been via Twitter, and we were delighted when he responded to our ver y fir st tweet. Thus began a great relationship between a squir rel and a school; Red House and a red squir rel ! All of the work we have done so far has been compiled into a commemorative book, which we wil l use to help

encourage and per suade other s to ‘Vote for Bob’. People can sti l l vote via their website www.voteforbob.co.uk

BRINGING LEARNING TO LIFEThank you to al l of our vis itors who have shared stor ies and their exper iences .

THE HUMAN BODY

Years 4, 5 and 6 took part in an interactive workshop by Dr Pam White and Dr Judith Donkin from Durham University. Year 4 learnt about the musculoskeletal system and added Play-Doh to bones to create muscles. Year 5 learnt about hearts and circulation by drawing a full size circulatory system and then used dopplers to find pulses and take blood pressure. Year 6 were taught the dangers of smoking, alcohol and drugs and the harmful effects they have on the body.

HELP FOR HEROES

Year 6 learnt about the work and support that Help for Heroes provide to soldiers who have been wounded both physically and mentally. They also tackled an obstacle course, with either their legs tied together or blindfolded, so that they could experience the challenges faced by those with a disabil ity, and learn how soldiers have to adapt to life after they are injured.

DAISY CHAIN FITNESS

Daisy Chain visited the Nursery & Infant School to spend the morning with Year 1 in their PE lesson. They all had lots of fun learning new fitness skil ls.

MISSION CHRISTMAS

Courage the Cat and Tom visited the Nursery & Infant School to talk about TFM Mission Christmas. Children supported the campaign by donating presents to children and teenagers who might not otherwise receive any gifts.

SPEECH & DRAMA WORKSHOP

Years 4-6 took part in a Speech & Drama workshop with Mrs Flynn and her team from Enter CIC. The session helped to develop their skil ls and abil ity to perform. Techniques included breathing, projection of the voice and confidence. Their skil ls were further developed in drama lessons, culminating in a poetry recital on the last day of term.

The 3D printer will allow Red House pupils to work on projects that require a higher level of thinking and evaluation skil ls.

Children would normally sketch a model and then make that model using card, 3D pr inting al lows them to assemble and physical ly handle an accurate and detai led ver sion of their designs.

The benefits for pupils and teaching are endless with 3D pr inting. It can be used in other areas outside of Design & Technology, such as pr inting models of mountain ranges in geography or pr inting model hear ts or joints in biology.

A VOTE FOR BOB IS A VOTE FOR NATURE

INVESTMENT IN TECHNOLOGY: 3D PRINTINGWE CONTINUE TO INVEST IN THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY AND THE SCHOOL HAS RECENTLY PURCHASED THE MOST UP-TO-DATE 3D PRINTER; A CUBEPRO DUO PRINTER.

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM - TRIPS & TOURS

YEARS 5 & 6 LONDON ADVENTUREBY LILY CORDWELL-SMITH YEAR 6

DUKE OF EDINBURGH

Year 10 practiced their navigation ski l ls as par t of their training towards their Duke of Edinburgh Award. The lessons that they learnt dur ing their walk at Reeth wil l be applied when they complete their final expedition.

IT WAS A VERY EARLY START. ALL OF US WERE EAGER TO GET ON THE BUS. WE ALL WAVED AT OUR MUMS AND DADS AS WE HIT THE ROAD TO START OUR JOURNEY!

After a long coach journey we eventual ly made it to London! We passed al l the fancy car shops and expensive clothes shops. London was ver y busy and for some people this was their fir st t ime!

Fir st on the agenda was a r iverboat cruise on the Thames! We cl imbed on to the boat and sat on the outside chair s. As the boat was moving one of the boat crew talked about the buildings and the br idges and their amazing records and histor y. All of us were taking a lot of photos and a lot of selfies with our fr iends!

After the boat tr ip we were dropped off at the London Eye where we watched a 4D video. It had special effects to make you feel l ike you were in the sky! After that we went on the London Eye . At fir st I was a bit scared but I discovered that it didn’t real ly feel l ike it was moving, it was just the view that changed! (I took a lot of photos on the London Eye!)

To finish off the day we went to the Rainforest Café in Piccadil ly Circus. The burger s were delicious! It was lovely eating in the rainforest. The fish in the tank were beautiful . After a gorgeous dinner we headed to the hotel on the coach. The rooms were a nice size but I was a bit ner vous at fir st but I had Gracie so I was fine . I was ver y sleepy!

In the morning we went down to have our breakfast. I had loads of Nutella on toast and croissants. All of us were in heaven! After our breakfast we sor ted our bags remember ing to put our sweets in for Mati lda later! Fir st we went to the Natural Histor y Museum it was real ly good; I l iked the dinosaur s the best and I found out that the Night at the Museum 3 was fi lmed there . After that we had our lunch outside . Next we went to the Tower of London the poppies were amazing. The armour that soldier s wore and what the hor se wore in battle must have been real ly heavy!

After that we had our tea at Pizza Express I was in a pizza wonder land, it was ver y yummy! When we finished we walked to the theatre to Mati lda, I couldn’t wait !

ROSEBERRY TOPPING

Whilst cl imbing Roseberr y Topping Year 3 discovered that the wind speed changed and temperature lowered as they got closer to the summit. The children produced excellent sketches, as well as learning how to use sur vival bags!

SKIING, LA PLAGNE FRANCE

Thir ty-three children and five staff took to the slopes in La Plagne , France . Although there had been a lack of snow pr ior to their arr ival plenty of ski ing was avai lable and ever yone had a fantastic t ime!

EDINBURGH VISIT

Year 9 visited ‘Dynamic Ear th’ where they par ticipated in a glaciation workshop; learning about ice cores, the science of cl imate investigations and handling specimens to discover facts about ice . They also visited ‘Camera Obscura’ where they saw l ive moving images of Edinburgh projected onto a viewing table through a giant per iscope .

BOYS’ SPORTS REPORTBY MR CREWE & MR KITCHING

HOCKEYThe U12’s have been in outstanding form and this talented team have been unbeaten so far this season. They have recorded impressive victor ies over Egglescl i f fe 9-1, Yarm 5-1 and Richmond 1-0. They were also crowned County 7 a-side Champions with some imper ious hockey in the recent finals .

A weakened U16 side struggled to cope with a powerful Egglescl i f fe Xl but produced an excellent performance to beat Yarm 4-1.

INDIVIDUAL SUCCESSMichael Chilvers U13 Durham County hockey team. Will Soumare U14 Durham County hockey team. Brandon Cheung and Sam Korsen U15 Durham County hockey team. Sam Masterson U16 Regional Level . Tom Copeland U17 Regional Level .

FOOTBALL Josh Scott and Cameron Gornall have been selected for the U13 Nor th East ISFA Football Team.

RUGBYThe U11 team played with great spir it throughout the term. However they are a ver y young side with over half the squad coming from Year 5. Their effor t and determination were never in question and although they fai led to win a game we were proud of their performances. There is no doubt that the exper ience the Year 5 pupils gained wil l stand them in good stead for next year.

The U13’s played some ver y ski l ful rugby and scored some fantastic tr ies showing they have a lot of abil ity. They recorded wins against Teesside High School, Durham Chor ister s, Fyl ing Hall and Newcastle School for Boys. The highl ight of the season was undoubtedly an emphatic victor y over Yarm School.

Despite losing to NSFB the U15’s had a successful season. They have some powerful player s and pace in the backs. They were far too strong for Fyl ing Hall and recorded home and away wins against Cundall Manor. The second match against Cundall was par ticular ly pleasing as the fir st game was ver y close but in the rematch we ran out 66-17 winner s.
