Miss Sarah Womble, Recruitment Supervisor Sarah Nelson Womble, Delta Tau, has
touched the lives of many at Delta Tau
Chapter, University of Central Arkansas.
ffectionately known as Miss Sarah to all who know her in Sigma Kappa, this outstanding
recruitment supervisor has truly been there and done that. For the past 25 years, Sarah Nelson Womble, Delta Tau, has been recruitment supervisor for Delta Tau Chapter, University of Central Arkansas, seeing them through the tough times, growth, and successes .
Upon graduating from UCA, Sarah pursued her career as a teacher in north Little Rock and started a family. In 1974, Harriet Smith Frazer, Beta Epsilon, asked her if she would be willing to serve as recruitment supervisor for Delta Tau. As a young educator ready to become involved as an alumna, Sarah accepted the offer willingly.
In today's fast-changing world, it is unique for someone to remain in the same business/ profession for a long period of time. When asked what the motivation is, Sarah reflected and said, "It is the intrinsic reward of having the opportunity to see young women grow and mature and it's being appreciated. When you've had a bad day and you walk in and the members say 'Miss Sarah's here,' and you know
Sigma Kappa Triang le • Spring 200 1
they are truly glad to see you, it makes the 30 mile drive and extended day worth it."
Harriet, now fellow Delta Tau advisory board member, has seen Sarah in action in late-night bid matchings, last minute runs for napkins and food, with distraught collegians, and much, much more. Harriet says that Sarah, a newly retired school teacher and director of elementary eduction, has learned a great deal from her experiences.
"Sarah has turned her experiences into a body of motivational workshops for self and chapter esteem building. She shows collegians how to 'put their best foot forward', making them feel good about themselves and comfortable in their surroundings," shared Harriet. "She's a one of a kind!"
Delta Tau chapter president Sara Hendricks also knows the dedication of this recruitment supervisor. "Miss Sarah opens up her home, her heart, and dedicates her time and energy to Delta Tau. No matter what, we know Miss Sarah is behind us, supporting us, and that is the most wonderful feeling we, as collegians, can have," said Sara.
Delta Taus Sarah Womble (left) and Chapter President Sara Hendricks share their excitement on bid day 2001 .
Of course, with any job comes highs and lows. Sarah remembers, "I have been there when quota was 25 and we got six, and when quota was 25 and we got 26. Problems are 'challenges in disguise' and my goal has always been for Delta Tau to get to the top and stay there. And we have."
Sarah strongly encourages other alumnae to get involved ... with these three words of advice I ) support and advise, 2) be a positive role model, and 3) be there through the good and the bad. "Know that there will be tears along with the laughter, but in the end I truly believe the intrinsic rewards are well worth the 'not so good' that is part of it all," shared Sarah.
In summary, Sarah shares, "The seed you plant in the winter is the rose that grows in the spring. -Bette Midler. Be it one rose (a Sigma Kappa member) or a dozen plus (an entire chapter), it is a very special feeling, a reward worth waiting for."

Sigma Kappa Triangle • Spring 200 I
To the editor, From the editor, A quick note to let you know how much I enjoyed reading the recent Sigma Kappa Triangle (Winter 'OJ).
I couldn 't put it down! I especiaLly enjoyed the story by jane ALlan on Margaret Andrew and aLL of her accompLishments, as weLl as the Sigma Kappas In the Media stories. To the editor, In the Winter 200 J Sigma Kappa Triangle, an article featured Tara Stephenson, a set decorator. I was hoping to get her contact information so that I could contact her. I am going on my first trip to Los Angeles soon, and I was hoping to meet her when I go. I am studying to be a set decorator, so this could be an awesome opportunity to meet a fellow sister who is working in the same profession I hope to be in one day. Thank you for your help. One heart, one way.

Recruitment can be a very exciting time for any chapter, whether quota is 10 or 50. Achieving quota, pledging quality women, and striving to achieve Standards of Excellence are common goals for all chapters.
Make 'creating an exciting recruitment' a goal at your Sigma Kappa chapter. With the help of a recruitment supervisor, advisors, and other national officers, anything is possible. Best of luck to all chapters as plans begin for fall recruitment.
This issue of the Sigma Kappa Triangle focuses on several aspects of recruitment, how to get involved as an alumna through the Virtual Violet program, recommending a collegian to become a Sigma Kappa, and coverage on the nationwide Just ONE recruitment workshops.
April D . Belva, Gamma Mu Sigma Kappa Triangle editor [email protected]
As a former vice president of membership for my chapter, I remember the plans, reports, late nights, and long hours of preparation. But, most of all, I remember the thrill of bid day and gaining 50 new sisters.

Sigma Kappa Triangle • Spring 200 I

Chapters across the U.S. gathered for a day of
fun, sisterhood, and education. The topic?
Sigma Kappa Triang le • Spring 200 I
Upon entering college, we. expect to continue stretching our skills in the
traditional ' three R's.' Who would
have guessed that becoming a member of a
sorority would challenge our skills and
understanding in three other R's: recruitment,
responsibility, retention?
These three R's, recruitment, responsibility,
and retention, provide a significant impact
upon the continued growth of any collegiate
chapter - and Sigma Kappa nationwide.
Members know that recruitment is one of the
most important responsibilities of sorority life.
For some chapters, the season and topic of
recruitment can fuel the fire of excitement.
Indeed, recruitment themes and ideas are the
number one most talked about sorority issue
on the Sigma Kappa's Web site bulletin board.
To educate members on the value of a healthy
recruitment, Sigma Kappa introduced and
presented Just ONE Recruitment Readiness
Workshops to address this important topic in
greater detail .
The first -ever, regional Just ONE workshops
were held across the country during two
consecutive weekends, February 24 and March
3, 2001 . Various facilitators traveled to 21
different locations to work on recruitment
issues with collegiate vice presidents of
membership, continuing membership
chairmen, various chapter officer s, recruitment
supervisors , and advisory board members.
Chapters attended the workshop to analyze the
chapter's recruitment and campus competition ,
and to begin developing a plan to be/ stay
competitive on their respective campuses.
Sisters were given an opportunity to learn
more about planning a 12 month recruitment
strategy, learn new and exciting recruitment
ideas from one another, and discover new
resources to support their chapter's new
recruitment efforts .
Vivian Jensen, Delta Theta, said the best part of
the workshop for her was 'gaining ideas from
other chapter members and seeing how
different events / plans work for them. Also,
learning how to improve what we are doing
now and making that distinctly different from
other sororities was great.' The workshop also
touched on topics such as creating a

competitive image through appearance and
clothing, selling sisterhood, songs and skits ,
decorations and nametags, and necessary
conversation skills.
"Any time you can bring the national level
down to the local level it is a wonderful
experience. The impressions these women
leave are wonderful. Clearly, the national
organization recognizes and is responding to
sisters ' request for more recruitment training.
It was important for sisters to see that they
are not floating in this boat alone,"
commented Collegiate Province Officer
Mandy Johnson Leibold, Xi.
Says Anne Liebhart, Kappa Alpha , "The
excitement the facilitators shared got me
excited about recruitment - I wish my whole
chapter could have attended! Their
excitement definitely worked to help me
share that enthusiasm with the chapter
through workshops with our members. "
The electricity of recruitment can move
chapters to a new time of growth . Planning
ahead for the next 12 months creates the best
possible opportunity for expansion. With
every sister working toward the same
recruitment goals for their chapter, campus
quota / total is always achievable!

New Gift Society Recognizes Significant Sigma Kappa
Preparing for the Future
Through a will, you can provide a better future for those you love as well as charitable organizations, like the Sigma Kappa Foundation . The federal tax laws provide a I 00 percent charitable estate tax deduction when a donor makes an outright bequest to a charitable organization.
Your will may name the Sigma Kappa Foundation as beneficiary of a dollar amount, a specific property, or a percentage of the total estate. Gifts may be designated to a favorite educational or philanthropic program or be used where the Board of Trustees sees the greatest need.
If you would like to receive additional information about preparing your will or making other contributions to the Foundation, request a copy of our Giving Benefits Brochure from Suzy Garner, director of development, in national headquarters.
Sigma Kappa Supports Alzheimer's Research Your generous contributions to the Sigma Kappa Foundation continue to make a difference for victims and caregivers of Alzheimer 's Disease. Since 1988, the Sigma Kappa Foundation has donated nearly one half million dollars in support of Alzheimer's Disease and gerontology related research. In 2000, the Sigma Kappa Foundation awarded three grants. The recipient of a $50,000 national Alzheimer 's Association grant was Rhonda Akkerman, a University of Texas researcher, for development of an intervention program , "Managing Anxiety in Caregivers of Alzheimer's Disease Patients." Two $5,000 grants were presented to local Alzheimer 's Association chapters. In Chattanooga, Tennessee, the grant funded "Helping Hands: Congregational Respite Program and Alzheimer's Professional and
Caregiver Educational Program." In California, the grant assisted the Los Angeles Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association in funding a program for increasing access to dementia care services for low-income Asian and Pacific Islanders .
Honor and Memorial Gifts You have the opportunity to support the Foundation and at the same time pay tribute to a loved one by making a gift in honor or in memory of a sister, family member, or close friend. Your gift with the appropriate information should be sent to the Sigma Kappa Foundation. You can use the enclosed envelope, if you wish. The Foundation will promptly send notification of your gift to the recipient or the family member. The amount of your gift is confidential.
All donors of honor and memorial gifts are recognized in the Sigma Kappa Triangle.

Sigma Kappa Triangle • Spring 2001
Rem embering Kae East Farlow Acosta
Ali who knew Kathryn East Farlow Acosta, Delta Lambda, best known to us as "Kae Farlow," remember her as a soft spoken, petite, lovely lady who got things done. Kae was a very dedicated and loyal Sigma Kappa, but more than that she was a dedicated and loyal member of
Kae East Farlow Acosta, the Greek community. She was Delta Lambda initiated at Wayne State University
into Pi Kappa Sigma and became a Sigma Kappa in 1959 at the time of the merger of the two sororities. She was a member of the South Oakland County MI Alumnae Chapter, a collegiate province officer, collegiate district director, and national vice president of collegiate chapters (1975-1980). She was passionate about Sigma Kappa and worked hard for her advancement.
Kae was an elementary school teacher and an excellent one. The love of her life was her family. She has three beautiful Sigma Kappa daughters: Pam, Gamma Beta, Beth, Alpha Tau, Lynn, Gamma Beta, seven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. She loved to travel and did so extensively. She had that Sigma Kappa "green thumb" and was quite nurturing of her violets (daughter Pam is now nursing them along). Former National Vice President for Collegiate Chapters Pat Mills, Iota, remembers Kae as "having a nice sense of humor, so devoted to Sigma Kappa, very dependable, and VERY proud to wear the Sigma Kappa badge."
Daughter Pam remembers one of the most fun things they had done recently was seeing Kae dance at her grandson's wedding (even though due to a stroke she couldn't walk). Pam remembers her mother loved life; Sigma Kappa collegians, her family, teaching school, her house, her violets, and other flowers.
Having the privilege of serving on national council with Kae, I remember her as a beautiful, soft spoken lady. In a quiet, gracious way, my sister Kae got things done, and made certain Sigma Kappa grew and prospered.
She had not been well the last few years and had moved herself and husband into a nursing home. Kae passed away quietly on November 22, 2000.

Alumnae & Recruitment
"When I was a Sigma Kappa . . . ," she casually commented .
The job description changes , but do the responsi bilities? Where do alumnae fit into the perpetual circle of membership growth for the national organization? Do actions and assistance from alumnae benefit chapters? While collegians gathered nationwide participating in the Just ONE membership recruitment workshops, assessing chapter dynamics and skills, the necessity for alumnae involvement has never been greater.
For continued growth and longevity, Sigma Kappa alumnae must successfully transition from co llegiate to alumnae experience. This completes the membership recruitment cycle for a member: 1) potential member, 2) new member, 3) member 4) and lastly, alumna. By completing this cycle, alumnae should clearly see tl1e significance of their role in tl1e membership recruitment arena. A solid foundation of sorority knowledge, commitment, and common vision was formed during the co ll egiate experience. Upon completion of these years, it then becomes a shared responsibili ty as alumnae to mode l this to potential members and coll egians in chapters today.
Alumnae can ensure the continued success of Sigma Kappa's membership recruitment process and program in countless ways. For decades, alumnae have provided assistance

during formal and informal recruitment. Preparing food, serving refreshment , cleaning-up, flowers, yard service, housekeeping, providing necessary props, music, incentives, helping hands, supervision, facilitation, monetary contributions, and potential member introductions. The lasting benefits of these selfl ess contributions of time, talents, and gifts to chapters far exceed the expectations. For continued success in a highly competitive recruitment environment, chapters will continue to depend on these types of services from alumnae. Wants and needs change on a regular basis. Alumnae who respond to collegiate needs and take action within alumnae chapters to meet the needs arc proactive caretaker s of Sigma Kappa's future.
Understanding the importance of tl1e alumnae experience, modeling the experience, and providing necessary ser vices to meet the needs of recruitment signifi cantly affect the outcome of future recruitment and growth for Sigma Kappa.
Membership in Sigma Kappa became our gift for a lifetime, to be shared and entrusted upon generations of yow1g women to come .
"I am a Sigma Kappa!, " she said ~vith pride and enthusiasm .
