Founded in 1840 by a group of Liverpool music-lovers the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic is the UK’s oldest continuing professional symphony orchestra and one the world’s oldest concert societies. It has always been at the heart of Liverpool’s cultural life and today, is a rapidly developing, forward-looking and innovative arts organisation.

The original vision of our founders has remained a driving force and is interpreted today in our mission “to promote the love of music and music-making” at the centre of which is the award-winning Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and its associated ensembles and concert series; Liverpool Philharmonic Hall; the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir; Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Choir, Training Choir, Melody Makers and Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Company; and an extensive learning programme which is recognised as a national leader in its field in its quality, reach and impact on our communities.

Each year, Liverpool Philharmonic presents close to 400 concerts and events at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and its smaller-scale Music Room, and in venues across the City. Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra

The award-winning Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra is the UK’s oldest continuing professional symphony orchestra. Vasily Petrenko was appointed Principal Conductor of the Orchestra in September 2006 and in September 2009 became Chief Conductor. He joins a distinguished line of musicians who have led the Orchestra during its illustrious history including Max Bruch, Sir Charles Hallé, Sir Henry Wood, Sir Malcolm Sargent, Sir John Pritchard, Sir Charles Groves, Walter Weller, David Atherton, Marek Janowski, Libor Pešek KBE, Petr Altrichter and Gerard Schwarz.

The Orchestra gives over sixty concerts each season in its home, Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, and in recent seasons world premiere performances have included major works by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Sir John Tavener, Sir James MacMillan, James Horner, Tan Dun, Nico Muhly, Stewart Copeland, Karl Jenkins, Michael Nyman and Jennifer Higdon and works by Liverpool-born and North West-based composers. Collaborations with international artists from rock, pop and roots music include Sir Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, Orchestral Manoeuvres in

The Orchestra also performs widely throughout the UK and internationally, most recently touring to China, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, Spain, Germany, Romania and the Czech Republic. Earlier this year, the Orchestra toured to Japan for the first time.

With Vasily Petrenko, recent additions to the Orchestra’s extensive discography include Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony (Gramophone Awards Orchestral Recording of the Year 2009), the world premiere performance of Sir John Tavener’s Requiem; award-winning surveys of Rachmaninov’s symphonies, orchestral works and complete piano concertos with Simon Trpčeski and Elgar’s Symphony No. 1 and Cockaigne Overture. The recording of Shostakovich’s Symphony No.10, part of complete symphony cycle on disc that has received world-wide critical acclaim, was the Gramophone Awards Orchestral Recording of the Year 2011.

Liverpool Philharmonic Hall

There has been a Philharmonic Hall on Hope Street since 1849. It was destroyed by fire in 1933 and the current art deco, Grade II* listed Liverpool Philharmonic Hall opened on the same site in 1939.

The Hall has recently undergone a major £14.5 million refurbishment include the building of a brand new second space, Music Room for smaller-scale concerts and events, rehearsals and learning programme activities, private functions and corporate events.

Liverpool Philharmonic Hall is recognised as one of the UK’s premier arts and entertainment venues for its wide-ranging presentation of best in contemporary and roots music, rock, pop and folk music, partnerships with festivals, broadcasters and promoters and innovative approaches to classical and non-classical programming. The Hall also offers a unique cinema experience and a popular film programme, a comedy line-up featuring many of the top stand-up comedians in the country, as well as hosting numerous community events such as graduation ceremonies, school and college prize-givings, charitable concerts, business and private functions and civil weddings and partnerships.

Liverpool Philharmonic is a significant partner in the programming, marketing and management of the City’s spectacular St. George’s Hall Concert Room, and has responsibility for the operations management of Liverpool Philharmonic’s rehearsal, recording and learning venue at the former Friary Church in North Liverpool, now called Liverpool Philharmonic at the Friary.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Orchestra Co-ordinator

Location: The normal place of work is Liverpool Philharmonic Hall or any reasonable location dependent upon the requirements of the post

Reporting to: Deputy Orchestra Manager

Contract: Full time, permanent

Principal Responsibilities

To coordinate and administer the day to day running of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and other Liverpool Philharmonic ensembles, providing administrative and servicing support for rehearsals, concerts, projects, events and recordings, ensuring the effective operation of all activities.

To coordinate the activities of Liverpool Philharmonic musicians, ensuring high quality and proactive communications, logistics support and relationship management.

To assist the Deputy Orchestra Manager fixing freelance musicians, ensuring timely and accurate payment for all musicians and providing a welcoming environment for visiting musicians and artists.

Key Objectives

Event Coordination

Ensure the highest standards in event coordination including but not limited to rehearsals, concerts, projects, events and recordings

Work with orchestra management and wider Liverpool Philharmonic colleagues to provide an operating environment in which musicians and artists can always be at their best

Be on duty for concerts, rehearsals and recordings both at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and out of town venues as required, including foreign tours including being on-call (managed by rota)

Assist with travel and accommodation arrangements for out of town concerts and foreign tours where appropriate

To ensure all Orchestra activities have the required number of musicians present

Processing Liverpool Philharmonic Hall security passes for all freelance musicians

Work with the Deputy Orchestra Manager to ensure all logistical and practical arrangements are in place to a consistently high standard

Musicians, Communications and Relationship Management

Administer outstanding quality communications to musicians Provide outstanding customer service and relationship management to

musicians Support the Deputy Orchestra Manager with fixing freelance musicians as

required Sending all relevant information and schedules to freelance musicians as

necessary To create, issue and update contracts for freelance musicians Maintain and update the OPAS database as necessary keeping accurate

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary £18,000 per annum

Probation and performance appraisal The probation period for this post is six months from the start date.

The Deputy Orchestra Manager sets objectives for the post holder annually and he or she will appraise performance on an annual basis.

Hours of work The standard contracted hours for this post are 35 hour per week.

Normal office hours are Monday-Friday, 9.30am to 5.30pm, however there will be requirement to regularly undertake evening and weekend work, this will be included within the post’s 35 hour working week. You may be required to work over and above these normal working hours depending on the RLPO schedule requirements. Overtime is not payable however time off in lieu can be arranged with your Line Manager.

Holidays The annual leave entitlement is 26 days, plus the 8 days in recognition of bank

holidays. These will be taken at times to be agreed with the Orchestra Manager

Pension Liverpool Philharmonic operates a Group Personal Pension Scheme whereby

employees can elect to join end enjoy employer contributions.  In accordance with the Pension Act 2008, all qualifying employees are to be auto enrolled into the Group Personal Pension scheme.

Sickness Payments The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic has a sickness absence policy and payments

during sickness absence will be made in accordance with the policy. Details of the policy are available on request.

Other expenses Other expenses, necessarily incurred in the performance of the duties of the

job, will be provided, subject to authorisation by the Orchestra Manager.

Whole Time Service During your employment with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, you must not,

without written consent from the Chief Executive, undertake any outside work, paid or unpaid. Work of a literary or artistic nature is excluded from this condition, provided it does not create a potential conflict of interest.

The notice period for the termination of the contract of employment will be one calendar month.
