THE HEADQUARTERS of Radio-Tele Luxembourg at Villa Lougviny inthe Grand Duchy. From this building, programmes are beamed to Britain,Germany, Holland, France and Luxembourg throughout the day andevening.

SO THIS was Radio '208' Luxembourg or, as it used to be called,`The Station Of The Stars'. Somehow it wasn't what I wasexpecting at all.

This station that has been broadcasting regularly to Britain foryears now, is located at the Villa Lougviny in the city. All theservices of Radio-Tele Luxembourg are transmitted from there -a large rambling building with white marble floors set among thetrees in one of Luxembourg's many parks.

It snowed almost continually during our visit and the cityappeared as one of those dream worlds you read about in thecolour magazines or see annually in pantomime at the LondonPalladium.

Earlier, at Brussels, while waiting for a plane connection thatnever came, I had wondered exactly where is Luxembourg. We'veall listened to the station, probably know the names of the discjockeys off by heart . .. but where is it?

If you asked the average American tourist where Luxembourgwas he would probably tell you it was a stopping -off place for theBahamas (you can fly to the Bahamas at a cheaper rate fromLuxembourg) . . . others would say it was situated bang slap inthe middle of Europe.

That's the trouble with Lux, you see. Nobody goes thereunless they are going on to somewhere else. The local childrenleave home after schooling, because they cannot really train to beanything there.

But where exactly is Luxembourg? Well, it is a small country- about 1000 square miles - with about one third of it coveredwith forests. Population is about 335,000. From the city, you candrive to Germany or Belgium in just a few hours. It is in thecentre - so it is an ideal situation for a radio station aiming for alarge European audience.

BUT WHERE ISLUXEMBOURG?

The Grand Duchy is an independent sovereign state and thecity itself is one thousand years old.

The headquarters of Radio-Tele Luxembourg look ratherancient in a nice way. The disc jockeys out there - four for theEnglish service, Tony Prince, Paul Burnett, Bob Stewart andDavid Christian - all live in the city. Three are married and allfind the Luxembourg people friendly even if they are inclined to"keep themselves to themselves".

Perhaps, though, these people resent thousands of visitorsdescending upon their small, quiet country each year. The discjockeys, however, because of their personalities make friendseasily. Paul Burnett has married a Luxembourg girl, Nicole. TonyPrince has recently married his Oldham -born childhoodsweetheart, Christine. Bob Stewart moved to Luxembourg lastyear with his wife and new baby Daren Mark.

"Luxembourg is a wonderful place to live but it is incrediblyexpensive here. A tin of baby food for instance costs fourshillings here whereas it would be about tenpence at home," BobStewart told me.

"All food is more expensive but things like cars and cigarettesare much cheaper. But you can't live on fried cars," he smiled.

Some of the disc jockeys feel the biggest drawback ofLuxembourg is being about 400 miles from London where, theybelieve, it all still happens. One music paper last year describedthem as the four forgotten men of pop.

"To a certain extent I suppose that's true," said Paul. "It'sgreat fun working for 208 because it is commercial radio and thatis something we all believe in very strongly indeed.

"The only problem is that our head office for the Englishservice is so far away. We really look forward to our mail whichcomes each week because we obviously tend to lose touch withEngland. We get about one month a year back there but itobviously isn't the same."

All the DJ's however, enjoy working for '208'. They havesettled down to the slow pace of Luxembourg life. "There'ssomething rather romantic about life here", said one of the teamwho then asked me not to quote him on that. I won't. Are thereany language problems.

"A few but a lot of people speak English here, said TonyPrince, Oldham's 'Royal Ruler'. "When my wife Christine cameover here, she couldn't speak a word of the language but shemanaged to get along fine. I think it's really a question ofadapting yourself to a slightly different way of life, that's all.

Tony admits that he has undergone a change of style sincejoining '208'. "I've had to mature a little with Luxembourg.When I started here I said a few silly things but we're through allthat now. Out on the pirates you could say anything and getaway with it."

Because they tend to feel cut off from England, the discjockeys all value fan mail. Each of them can get anything up to200 letters in a really good week.

"Then there are the priority request cards," said DavidChristian. "We get a couple of hundred of those a week, too -and we try to play all the requests."

Any member of the Radio Luxembourg Fan Club - it coststen shillings to join - can get a 'priority' request on '208'. Theyget six cards a year for free requests and disc jockeys give thesepriority over the air. Additionally, the club has its own newspaperwhich is sent free to members. This includes more requestcoupons.

Tony Prince sums up Luxembourg's policy in a few words."We talk to the listener and not at him. And Luxembourginvolved the listener in the station. That's it."

THERE ARE four regular announcers on '208' out in the Grand Duchy.Here they are - Tony Prince, Paul Burnett, and Bob Stewart. All fourbroadcast six evenings a week dee-laying shows, and reading the nationaland the pop news compiled by RM.

COMMERCIAL CUFFLINKSJUST BECAUSE you singbubblegum doesn't mean you haveto chew it. The Cuff Links have hadto chew some bubblegum in theirtime, but a lot of it stuck in theirthroats.

"First of all," said lead singerJoey Cord, "we prefer to think of itas 'Sweetrock' rather thanbubblegum. We've donea few songsthat we don't really like - there aretwo that I hate on the LP. 'Tracy',but we're getting to the pointwhere those disagreeable numberscan be eliminated. Each of oursingles is a little more complex andsays a little more than the last one.This transcendence will carry us outof the 'Sweetrock' image and intomore worthwhile and lasting music- we hope. That doesn't mean tosay that our past stuff was bad,there is a place for simple music. Aslong as it brings enjoyment topeople."

I pointed out that the majorityof bubblegum groups have one hitand fade away. They also have atendency to remain anonymous -appearances by such groups are rareand no image is ever attached totheir records.

"Decca wanted us to come overso the same thing wouldn't happento us. They felt that by letting it gounattended in Europe, 'Tracy'would never become aninternational hit.

We wanted to come anyway,

because we're curious. I'm a fanaticon antiques and old things ingeneral and this country is full ofaged buildings and products of along heritage. The cobblestoneshere and there, Big Ben and thepalace. In the States, it's nothingbut 'George Washington slept here'plastered on a wall. We aren'tdisappointed with the U.S., it's ourhomeland, but it really is thrillingto visit other places. Every countryhas it's faults, but we're justtourists and workers. We aren'tinvolved in any politics. The peopleare our concern. I want to try anddeal with people as individuals andnot as crowds. I like to meet asmany different persons as I canwherever I go. I am an outspokenperson myself, which helps ingetting to know people. I am notshy. I am what I am, not whatpeople like me to be - that's thedefinition of a friend.

"This attitude has been part ofme most of my life, as I came froma very close family. We used to singa lot - whistle while we worked. I

carried that into music and dealingswith people. The whole group isinterested in people and beingaccepted. Nobody wants to berejected. We like to please andwe're pleased in pleasing.

"Musically, we have varied tastesthat you wouldn't think possiblefrom what we do on record. I likethings from 'La Boheme' to the

Stones to Frank Sinatra. I even digthe 1910 Fruitgum Company.Music is really only one bag -professional and artistic. It'spurpose is to relay a thought or afeeling, but if you're going to saysomething, you'd better believe it,or the feeling won't be there. Likethose two tracks I mentioned that I

never liked. We did those trackswhen we were session men. Wedidn't like them then and we don'tlike them now, so we never includethem in our concert repertoire. Youcan tell when someone doesn'tbelieve in what he's singing; itbecomes an obvious overstatement.However, there is no harm in doingit, because some of the tunes arecatchy and listeners like to hearthem. We're very commercial andwe don't believe in some of thethings we do, but some people likeit, so it's worthwhile. Music is a

way of giving vent to feelings. Ourway of doing things for people isthe way Disney did it - escapism.Giving people a moment ofhappiness. Music is ninety per centof my life. I whistle tunes when I'mwalking down the street. When I seeanother performer, my foot taps tohis music and I envy him. Music is apathway to the people. You'd liketo get to know everyone, but youcan't, so you try to know everyonethat you can."

Trems, Fairport forExtravaganza '70THE TREMELOES, Fairport Convention, Tyrannosauros Rex,John Peel, and Simon Dee have been booked for Extravaganza'70 - Britain's first ever pop and fashion festival.

Negotiations are going on to secure Arlo Guthrie, Sandie Shawand Clodagh Rodgers for the show which is being solelysponsored by Record Mirror.

The festival - which will feature the latest and greatest inprogressive music, hard rock and pop - opens at Olympia onFriday, May 29.

It will run for eight fun-packed days. Extravangaza '70 is fastbecoming the shop window for the trend, fashion and music youcan expect to hhear this year.

Apart from the legion of record companies who are queueingup to take part in the festival, Britain's leading fashion houses willbe showing off their latest designs.

Take Six - one of the leaders in the field - are taking a standat the festival to reveal their secret plans for fashion in thesummer.

Other artists booked through N E MS to appear atExtravanganza '70 include: Matthew's Southern Comfort, thePretty Things and the first London appearance of Syd Barrett.

Terrell diesAMERICAN SINGING star, TammiTerrell died this week in a

Philadelphia hospital. She was 24and had been ill for some time. Thecause of death is not known but shesuffered from a brain tumor sometime ago.

Tammi replaced Kim Weston asMarvin Gaye's singing partner andhad such hits as 'Good Lovin' Ain'tEasy To Come By' and 'The OnionSong.'

CPS investigateStones pirate LP

THE SOURCES of the Rolling Stones Pirate album 'Liver ThanYou'll Ever Be' are gradually being uncovered by the mechanicalCopyright Protection Society - whose job is to protectcopy rights.

Mr. R. C. Ellis, thy society'ssecurity officer commented "Weare gradually progressing in ourinvestigations I- although I don'twant to say anything more definiteat this moment."

The albums are believed to beproduced in this country - likeDylan's 'Great White Wonder',which was stopped by the societyrecently - although some copies ofthe legal Stones' album are beingshipped in from Holland.

Very few of the copies, in fact,originate from America althoughmost of the other pirate albumscurrently available are stillimported from the States - such as'Stealin" and 'Troubled Troubador'by Bob Dylan.

The English version of the albumcomes with plain black labels withthe name stamped on the sleeves.'Live In Vain' - included on theAmerican label - is missing.

The Stones' music publishersand record company in Americahave issued writs to try and stopthe widespread distribution of'Liver Than You'll Ever Be'.

Meanwhile work is finishing onthe Stones' official live album takenfrom their recent U.S. tour.

This is reported that it will be adouble album including as well ascuts from Ike & Tina Turner, thecomplete Stones stage act with,'Jumpin' Jack Flash', 'SympathyFor The Devil', 'Street FightingMan', 'Carol', 'Love In Vain', 'LittleQueen ie', 'Stray Cat Blues','Midnight Rambler', 'Live With Me'and 'Satisfaction'.

Lennons pull outof Toronto fest

JOHN AND YOKO Lennon have pulled out of the giant TorontoPeace Festival set for July 3 to 5. The couple have disagreed withKarma Productions, the festivals organisers, about making thefestival into a profit -making venture.

Originally they agreed thatpeople should be chargedadmittance, but later John andYoko decided they would like it tobe a free festival.

The orgainisers, however, havebeen advised against free concertsbecause of the need to control theaudience. However, they haveinvited John and Yoko as guests.

Already booked for the threeday festival are Johnny Winter,Chicago, Procol Harum,Youngbloods, B. B. King, Booker Tand the M.G.'s, Spirit and TajMahal. The Beatles, through AllenKlein, are reported to have askedfor two million dollars or 75 percent of the takings to appear at thefestival.

Revival inBritain

CREEDENCE CLEARWATERRevival who crashed our chartswith 'Proud Mary', 'Bad MoonRising', ('Green River' and 'Downon the Corner', arrived in Britain onApril 7.

The American quartet will playonly two concerts here. Both willbe at London's Royal Albert Hallon April 14 and 15. The other dateson the tour will be in Europe,finishing in Paris on April 15. Theirnew single 'Travellin' Band' isreleased in Britain today (Friday).

MERCIFUL HEAVENS! Receptions just ain'twhat they used to be. No more exciting chatterand rollicking booze -ups; now it's dangerousfemale exposure bent on turning innocentreporters into drooling sex fiends. What will ourparents think? Absolute afFRONTery? I for one

was most apalled throughout the duration, findingmyself not at liberty to get up and acquire a drinkor some Hors d'Oeuvres. Being of a conservativenature, I found Black Widow's entire perIormancea strain as I tried desperately not to look at therude offerings on stage. However, the devil in mewon out and tearing my hands from my eyes whatdid I perceive? Other glassy eyed journalists,previously undefiled, gaping as the censors hardwrought ethics were stripped bare and sinfulprotrusions bulged forth.

Black Widow were presenting their act, whichrevolves around witchcraft, for the first time to thepress and such licentiousness obviouslyembarrassed wholesome writers of this highlyrespected trade. Also submerged in the utterdepravity were scores of London's witches and theking, Alex Sanders, who observed with lustful gleeas his wife (pictured) Maxine cavorted starkersthrough devlish rituals. Representing Astaroth, shewas symbolically raped before our virtous eyes andthen pranced sans apparel until being sacrificed bysword in the final 'hair raising' scene.

It was apparent that pressmen, myself included,felt that their eyes had beheld a sight so unabashedthat the proper tradition of receptions had beendredged away and gorged with profligacy.

Friends, I feel I am no longer worthy of thecompanionship of my fellows after havingsuccumbed to viewing this flagrant display ofpagan ritual and oh gosh, sex. Even now I amdesperate to find a method of cleansing myself andresuming my role as a world renowned newsreporter.

Incidentally, there is talk of hiring a theatre soBlack Widow can present their act to the public.Actually, if I left the 'L' out of public, it would bean accurate description. The music - what music?Hoo hah

However, 'Let It Be'has moved backwards to thirdposition while Simon andGarfunkel's "Bridge OverTroubled Water' moves to No. 2.Only two other Beatle records inthe group's history - 'Love Me Do'and 'Something' have failed toreach the No. 1 spot.

RADIO LUXEMBOURG springs amajor surprise on its listeners thisweek by bringing BACK one ofthe former announcers, KidJensen.

Jensen left '208' last Decemberafter working on the station as aresident staff announcer. He is

flying back from Canada thisweek.

Radio Luxembourg waspersuaded to ask Jensen to returnto the station after receivingthousands of signatures on a

petition organised by Fab 208magazine. Geoffrey Everitt, BritishLuxembourg boss, told RM: "Weare very pleased to have KidJensen back with us once again."Jensen had originally left thestation to complete his collegeeducation in Canada.

Orbison totour Britain

ROY ORBISON starts an extensivetour of Britain on April 24 inTorquay. He will be backed on thetour by The Art Movement. Onthe 26th, he appears for twoweeks at the Fiesta Club, Stocktonand plays Batley from May 10-16.His tour is expected to finishmid -way through June.

Zoot Money has re-formed hisband and is currently in the studiosrecording an album anck a single.The sessions are being produced byAlan Price. THE BEATLES are returning to Radio One at Easter for aspecial programme, which may include some 'live' material fromthe group!

And that's not all. Ringo is booked for a 'live' dee-jayingspot on the top -rated "Open House" request show.

THE BBC special - 'TheBeatles Today' - will replace"What's New?" on Easter Mondayafternoon. It has been planned by'Scene and Heard's' productionteam together with GeorgeHarrison, who has visited AeolianHall for discussions with theprogrammes's producer, TedBeston.

The possibility of the Beatlesmaking some tapes available to theBBC for broadcast over one ofRadio One's daily programmes isone of the industry's main talkingpoints this week.

Mark White, the network's chiefassistant told RM this week: "Wehave heard nothing about this. Itis true, however, that the BBC hasmade suggestions in the past that

groups such as the Beatles, 'Stonesor Who could perform 'live' onRadio One by making their owntapes for inclusion in ourprogrammes."

Ringo Starr will broadcast onthe March 31 edition of "OpenHouse". The show will becompered as usual by Pete Murray.Ringo approached the BBC's"Open House" team throughApple earlier this year offering toappear in the series.

The RM understands that theBeatles are anxious to involvethemselves more in radio and TVin the future. This could meanfurther broadcasts later this yearand, it is also rumoured, a 'live'concert from the group at a

London venue.

HAPPYMOVE

WHEN A GROUP CHANGES its line-up and, most of all, its style'old' material tends to be a thing rather best forgotten. But theMove's latest album 'Shazam', which features Carl Wayne, hasproved to be something of a mixed blessing. The Rolling Stoneswere so impressed with it that they sent a telegram to the Movetelling them it was the best LP they'd heard for five years! Praiseindeed.

But having worked on the material for the album for almost ayear and considering their new fiery approach to their music, theMove find it all a little tiring. As Rick Price explained: "Since JeffLynne joined us it's made a great difference. And it's certainlyaltered the sound entirely."

"I don't really like the album," added Roy. "But perhapsthat's because Carl is on it. Mind you it's a good album sleeve."

The cover is certainly different. The colours are stark and theMove are depicted as 'Supermen' cartoon -type characters, withtheir faces super -imposed. The cover was in fact designed by afriend "f the group, Mike Sheridan, who is also involved on a newproject with Rick.

"We're working an an album together," he revealed. "Whichwill consist of all our own compositions. We each sing thenumbers we wrote, some times duetting on those we co -wrote. Itwill probably be released on Presiden't new label and is to becalled 'This is to Certify That'. And you can mention that I'll beproducing it!"

Rick is able to venture into different recording fields as he isnot personally contracted to anyone. "I'm smart," he laughed,and well he may as he is also planning to record a group albumwith fellow musicians and friends.

"I'm planning to use a five piece band with brass. All themusicians will be well-known names, and I'll be stealing themaway from their groups for about a month for rehearsals. Theoutcome of that will be an album, and then we'll all go back toour own groups, As I worked with a vocal harm ony group Sightand Sound before, I'd like to include a lot of harmony work onthe album. As the Move is basically an instrumental unit you

can't experiment so much with vocals. It takes a lot to arrange sixdifferent parts for voices, but with three voices only you can't getenough power."

Jeff Lynne, new member of the Move, who had previouslyworked with a highly respected though commerciallyunsuccessful group, the Idle Race, joined us at this point, havingbroken away from an ever increasing number of interviews . . .

He's still passing through a phase of 'settling in', but is obviouslyhappy with the reactions both within and without the group.

"The first date we've played together was the Belfry at SuttonColdfield and the reaction was quite good. Naturally I was a bitworried, not so much about the audience, as whether I'd learnedall the numbers well enough."

"With the group before," added Roy Wood. "We had oneperson who wasn't an instrumentalist, so now we have to adjust.With three guitarists you have to remember to hold back a littleto let someone else have a bash."

Although Roy and Jeff have not really had time toconcentrate on their songwriting, Jeff's lyrical powers added tothe Move will obviously become a large influence upon them. Thegroup's current single 'Brontosaurus' is a Roy Wood composition,but we can well expect to see combined efforts in the future.

"All the stage numbers we do in future will be entirelyoriginal," Jeff told me. "Both Roy and I particularly like classicalmusic, and I personally love to listen to sad songs. I always feelhappiest when I listen to them! I have written jolly songs though,like "The Skeleton and the Roundabout'." The last statementwas added with a grimace.

"I like- some typical pop though," added Roy. "I think thebest number the Move have recorded is 'Blackberry Way'. But wewant to include more of our classical influence now too. I reallylike pieces of music like '2001 A Space Oddysey'."

In the meantime, the Move recognise they must fight to beaccepted on a different musical plane. As Roy Wood said.

"We would very much like to do a John Peel Show, but weweren't quite his cup of tea before. I think we would be now, butof course we have to prove it. And you can't really appear on theother people's shows, like we might have in the past, because thenJohn Peel wouldn't want to know."

When group members change, regardless of their quality, theremust always be a transitory period. But the Move have one bigadvantage. As Bev Bevan summed up:

"It's the happiest the group's been for ages, and it's great."

FLYING HIGHTHERE WAS A TIME when aprogressive group wouldn'tdream of putting out a single -their music was album materialonly.

Rare Bird made our chartswith "Sympathy" (one of thenumbers from their album),and bassist/singer, Steve Gouldhad this to say about the singlesituation: "The hit has reallyhelped to break us withaudiences. I don't think thereis anything wrong with doing agood 'single' song at all eventhough we might be referred toas a progressive band. In ouract we do the song because theaudience expects it, but we gostraight into the next numberwithout waiting for any

and performing group andsingles are just a trailer of whatwe can do. If we went onmaking singles, I think we'dbecom e too chart consciousEven if "Sympathy' madenumber one, it wouldn't affecto'ir musical policy."

Rare Bird's musical policycontains a good sense ofdynamics - which is whatgood progressive music is allabout. In the old pop era,dynamics didn't play muchpart. But the musiciansinvolved these days are moreaware of their musicalbackground and infinitelybetter musicians compared

with those ten years ago.Rare Bird played their first

gig at the beginning of lastDecember at Mothers inBirmingham. When theirmanager, Tony Stratton -Smithsaw them in the first place, hecouldn't believe they had beenworking together for threemonths and hadn't been on theroad before.

They got a residency atLondon's Marquee Club andthe prestige that went with it.This was possibly the bestthing that happened to them,They were able to experiment.r.E.1 improvise and the mainthing the Marquee taught themwas to SWING. Apart fromSteve, Rare Bird has organist

"This is the first group I'vesung with," Steve said. "Ijoined Rare Bird last Octoberwhen it was known as 'The BedSitting Room Group'. This wasbecause we were rehearsing inGraham's room in London.The whole concept of thegroup was Graham's. He'sknown to us as 'The Major' andhas done over 2,000 sessionson keyboard instruments inrecording studios. Everythingwe play is written and arrangedby us and each of us

contribute ideas to a number.'Sympathy' is an example ofthis. We weren't really keen torelease it as a single because itdoesn't represent what we'reall about. It's indicative of onlya small part of what we can do."

Despite the hit, Rare Birdwill still continue to work suchclubs as London's Marquee,Mothers in Birmingham andthe rest of the 'heavier' places.In concert, they will onlyperform with heavy acts. Someof the concerts they are

playing in the near future willbe with groups like Flock andTaj Mahal.

They are recording anotheralbum this month and in Aprilwhich is scheduled for releasein May. Although they feelthere is no pressure in puttingout a follow-up single, it is

possible one of the tracks willbe released from the album.

Steve summed up thegroup's aim thus: "We want tobe a group of constant status,whereas on record it can bepurely coincidental."

reviewsZabriskie Point: Poignant

The boy in Antonioni's 'Zabriski Point' is played by MarkFrechette. A student and part time truck driver, he is besiegedby the enormity of his surroundings and frustrated by hisgeneration with their clumsy demanding pursuit to conformagainst conformity. Outcast by all for his refusal to join sides,he skirts the perimenters of both the revolutionary and thepolice state until nearly driven to murder during a collegetakeover bid at his university. Witness to the killing of apoliceman, he finds himself captured by a TV camera and seeksto escape the whole dehumanizing vat by 'borrowing' a smallaircraft and soaring above it all.

Simultaneously, a young girl snaps loose from her father andall that his myriad billions represent. In a battered jalopy, sheturns towards the desert and drives -looking for a mythicalhaven of meditation and a chance to think.

Buzzed by Frachette in his light aircraft, the couple meet inthe endless desert where one of the most poignant, symbolicand revealing love scenes takes places - at Zabriski Point.Realising that relief and contentment in such circumstances canonly be temporary, Frachette soon decides to return theborrowed plane and try to lose himself in Los Angeles whilethe girl, Daria Halprin, sadly returns to her lonely desert road.Switching on her radio, she is able to follow the news on eventsat the airport and hears that the boy is hot and killed by an'unidentified officer' as he lands the plane,

In a daze, she returns to her father's multi -million dollardesert home inbedded in a cliff and as a symbol of industrialand social suffocation, she imagines it expolding into fragmentsover and over again. Following the house come visions of beachtables, refrigerators, libraries, wardrobes and groceriesdisintegrating in her mind. In fantastic slow motionphotography, cornflakes packages and halves of chickens comefloating forward. The tension builds to screaming pitch as awhole society, it's history and heritage are whittled down in thebiggest emotional surge of desperation ever attempted by afilm.

A direct, descendant of 'Easy Rider', the film undertone isparanioa and it's medium is the hopeless battle against thesystem. Drenched in the violent frenzy of the American way oflife and smeared with the mythical dream of advertisedparadise, the message is fakery polluted by dollars andmurdered by a bullet. An ominous sunrise closes withpremonitions of perpetual disaster. LON GODDARD

Aside from being one of the mostbizarre individuals on any street, healso has a non-existent waist andthe lowest belt ever worn. That,however, has nothing to do withanything, but will be of interest toactive lovers of the baroque. Onfirst glance, he may appear to be ashocking reconstruction of PeterWyngarde or a fuzzy fence post,but he is in reality Mick Farrenpeeping out from behind MickFarren. Last week he wafted intothe RM offices in search of theMorbid Module for top levelconferences on recent events.

"What I'm trying to do is

explain to people that they are partof a much larger thing and thatthey no longer need to expressthemselves through violence", heexplained 'from behind hisall -systems -go moustache.

GUESS WHO

THE GUESS WHO are the latestexample of a group to achieve threeconsecutive top ten entries inAmerica, and precisely nothing inBritain. They are a long establishedCanadian group, whose discs werefrequently played in the discerningdays of Radio London.

Last year they sprang back intoprominence and the U.S. top threewith 'These Eyes' a beautiful songby two of the group, Backman andCummings, who penned all theirrecent successes. Junior Walker andthe All Stars have recently revivedthe song, losing all the achingsadness and gaining more airplaythan the original.

The Guess Who's latest single'No Time' is currently number fourin the States and is their mostcommercial offering to date. I hopeit gains recognition for the groupbefore more of their songs areruined by grotesquely inferiorversions. - DEREK HARVEY, 8Ramsay Road, Headington, Oxford.

CHARLIE GILLETT made fittingtribute on the death of RoyHamilton one of America's finestsoul singers, mentioning that he hadjust started recording for the AGPlabel, and his first single was to be'The Dark End Of The Street'. So many of the groups onthe road are existing at marpoverty level with the hopethat one day they are going tobe right up there with the Who,the 'Stones, and maybe, eventhe Beatles. But only the RoyHarpers and Al Stewarts haveavoided the crippling_ initial

outlay. Their only expense wasan acoustic guitar. But as

they've become known they'vehad to add to their basicequipment with replacementguitars and P.A. systems.

Rock groups - with theusual guitars, drums and a tonof amplification - needsomething more. They needfaith. And they need bread.

Sound City is one ofLondon's largest musicalstores. Said a spokesman: "Itall depends on how much geara new group wants. Forinstance whether they wantedsomething like 200 wattamplifiers or 100 watt ones. Ishould say it would be as wellfor a group to have 100 wattamplification on the drums and200 watts P.A. All together, Ireckon it'll cost a new group,in amplification alone, £300for each musician. "For theguitars an average price forgood new ones would be £200each. Three microphoneswould cost about £100 and theP.A. £450. A drum set would

For their moneythe band have automaticprotection against unethicalpromoters - it is in thegency's interest to get the

most reputable bookings - aswell as a quick gig -findingservice.

Agents are usually the firstpeople to know about concertsand promoters look throughagents lists of artists for thebest groups for their event. Asa result Quintessence are to goto Holland shortly.

And then the only othermajor expense is the group'smad managers.

These are the invaluablepeople who set up the group'sequipment on stage and dealwith all the problems ofloading and unloading the van.With Quintessence they arepaid the same amount at thegroup - £15 a week. Withother groups it can vary,according to the group's status,from £15 to £40.

But once you've met all

these costs, all your teenagerock star idol needs to do isearn some money.

"I don't think Blues musicis valid unless it's from oneself.If you're going to be a Bluesartist then create from oneself,that s the whole point becauseit's such a personal thing. Youjust can't copy someone else,you've got to bring your ownfeelings into it. By all meansplay your own particularversion of someone else'snumber as long as you putsomething of yourself into theplaying. It's no use copying, itwouldn't be original. If yousaw a copy of a Picassopaining you'd appreciate it

because it was a good copy,not because it was a goodpainting.

"I don't think audienceslike badly -played B. B. Kingphrases all over the place,particularly as there are nowsome very good British Bluesartists who put originality intotheir music. John Mayall is anexample and Peter Green playsthe Blues quite naturally. Peterwent through a phase ofplaying 13. B. King, but now heplays purely from himself.Duster Bennett is superb andthe material he writes is reallygood. When I was with TheChicken Shack we used tocopy Blues and got a real,authentic Blum sound - but itwasn't us, it was a copy. Butnow the Shack have veeredaway from all that and playtheir own thing, which is reallygreat. I think that with theintroduction of Paul Raymond,The Shack have changedcompletely and they're one ofmy favourite bands.

TOMMY ROE stabbed out a cigarette in the nmrby ashtray, and aim,.before it had time to cool was lighting up another one.

"I never usually smoke," he told me, "but I've worked my way throughfour interviewsthis afternoon, and somehow 0 helps if I've got somethingo do."

being happy in the knowledge that by next year he will be amillionaire, Tommy appears to be a highly mnsitiye, retiring yet friendlypersonality. He . wringing his hands and added.

"Ive been lucky today, the people I'm spoken to have brought up anumber of different subjects for me to talk about and I don't feel toomuch like I've been repeating myself."

Tommy is happiest at home away from show business influences, andthough he loves to Mink, he rarely spends mu. time in clubs. He owns athirty acre farm, which his family keep going when he's away. He says hehas litle to do with fellow artists, and commonsonss his greatest friends to be,his musical director, who has Men with h hree yeats, his bass playerand his next door neighbour.

-He's a really nice person," said Tommy. "But he has a strange lob,mlling napalm and things. To him I guess NTheme job. I don't thinkAmadei, is as violent as some people imagine. e ay see a picture in thenewspapers and they think that America is all like that. But that picture

covers such a small area of the map. I think the United States is thegreatest country in the world."

A recent visit to South Africa had helped to emphasise this point forTommyten

quite unbelievable there, it's Ike being in a different world. Theydon't have any world press coverage. The front pages of their newspapersare covered with news of car accidents and births, deaths and marriages.And of c they have no television. Everywhere we worked we had agood attendanoursece bemuse that's all the entertainment the people have got.So in that way ifs good, but generally I was glad to get away."

South Africa would seem to bee healthy unexploited market, butapparently there are many restrictions against musicians working there.This took our conmrmtion around to Tommy's thoughts on Unions.

"In theory I think it's good to have a union," said Tommy. "But it canmake things difficult. For my visit the exchange group for America was the

Moody Blues. Despite that restriction, I don't think Me British union is atall bad. I have to belong to four unions in America before I ran work fully.That's to enable me to play guitar, sing and appear on television. And thatmeans eight hundred to a thousand dollars a year in fees.

-There's no on miming for us, but you do get paid a higherfee if you perform limrestriction.If we donff get mid the correct fees for work wedo, the union are there to collect it."

Tommy Ree may well find himself joining yet another union shortly,since he hopes to enter into acting.

"I know said that for the last couple of years," he told me, reachingfor his whiskey. "But this time I hope it will materialise. Before hire beenoffered typical pap star roles, since the hit with 'Sheila'. But I'm glad nowI didn't do any of them, because it would have ruined any serious career Imight have as an actor."

In the meantime , though, Tommy will be working in cabaret in theNorth of England, and promoting his latest single on EMI Starside 'Stir ItUp and Serve If.

"I co -wrote it with Freddy Whetter of the Raiders;' Tommy told me."The Raiders are now working under just that name . Paul Reser has leftto go into management. Of course Freddie has his country and westerninterest, and Mark Lindsay did well in the States with his single 'Arizona'.Keith Allison the bass player has cut an old Negle of mine

isOne of the distinctive points about Tommy's singles is the drumming,and he explained to me why.

"I'se always used the same drummer on my records. He works on towith Simon and Garfunkel, and is on all their recorded material. He's somuch in demand far sessions that he won't work unlem he's paid doublethe scale, whits is one hundred and sixty dollars. Youjust can't copy someone else,you've got to bring your ownfeelings into it. By all meansplay your own particularversion of someone else'snumber as long as you putsomething of yourself into theplaying. It's no use copying, itwouldn't be original. If yousaw a copy of a Picassopaining you'd appreciate it

because it was a good copy,not because it was a goodpainting.

"I don't think audienceslike badly -played B. B. Kingphrases all over the place,particularly as there are nowsome very good British Bluesartists who put originality intotheir music. John Mayall is anexample and Peter Green playsthe Blues quite naturally. Peterwent through a phase ofplaying 13. B. King, but now heplays purely from himself.Duster Bennett is superb andthe material he writes is reallygood. When I was with TheChicken Shack we used tocopy Blues and got a real,authentic Blum sound - but itwasn't us, it was a copy. Butnow the Shack have veeredaway from all that and playtheir own thing, which is reallygreat. I think that with theintroduction of Paul Raymond,The Shack have changedcompletely and they're one ofmy favourite bands.

HOME LOVING TOMMY

TOMMY ROE stabbed out a cigarette in the nmrby ashtray, and aim,.before it had time to cool was lighting up another one.

"I never usually smoke," he told me, "but I've worked my way throughfour interviewsthis afternoon, and somehow 0 helps if I've got somethingo do."

being happy in the knowledge that by next year he will be amillionaire, Tommy appears to be a highly mnsitiye, retiring yet friendlypersonality. He . wringing his hands and added.

"Ive been lucky today, the people I'm spoken to have brought up anumber of different subjects for me to talk about and I don't feel toomuch like I've been repeating myself."

Tommy is happiest at home away from show business influences, andthough he loves to Mink, he rarely spends mu. time in clubs. He owns athirty acre farm, which his family keep going when he's away. He says hehas litle to do with fellow artists, and commonsonss his greatest friends to be,his musical director, who has Men with h hree yeats, his bass playerand his next door neighbour.

-He's a really nice person," said Tommy. "But he has a strange lob,mlling napalm and things. To him I guess NTheme job. I don't thinkAmadei, is as violent as some people imagine. e ay see a picture in thenewspapers and they think that America is all like that. But that picture

covers such a small area of the map. I think the United States is thegreatest country in the world."

A recent visit to South Africa had helped to emphasise this point forTommyten

quite unbelievable there, it's Ike being in a different world. Theydon't have any world press coverage. The front pages of their newspapersare covered with news of car accidents and births, deaths and marriages.And of c they have no television. Everywhere we worked we had agood attendanoursece bemuse that's all the entertainment the people have got.So in that way ifs good, but generally I was glad to get away."

South Africa would seem to bee healthy unexploited market, butapparently there are many restrictions against musicians working there.This took our conmrmtion around to Tommy's thoughts on Unions.

"In theory I think it's good to have a union," said Tommy. "But it canmake things difficult. For my visit the exchange group for America was the

Moody Blues. Despite that restriction, I don't think Me British union is atall bad. I have to belong to four unions in America before I ran work fully.That's to enable me to play guitar, sing and appear on television. And thatmeans eight hundred to a thousand dollars a year in fees.

-There's no on miming for us, but you do get paid a higherfee if you perform limrestriction.If we donff get mid the correct fees for work wedo, the union are there to collect it."

Tommy Ree may well find himself joining yet another union shortly,since he hopes to enter into acting.

"I know said that for the last couple of years," he told me, reachingfor his whiskey. "But this time I hope it will materialise. Before hire beenoffered typical pap star roles, since the hit with 'Sheila'. But I'm glad nowI didn't do any of them, because it would have ruined any serious career Imight have as an actor."

In the meantime , though, Tommy will be working in cabaret in theNorth of England, and promoting his latest single on EMI Starside 'Stir ItUp and Serve If.

"I co -wrote it with Freddy Whetter of the Raiders;' Tommy told me."The Raiders are now working under just that name . Paul Reser has leftto go into management. Of course Freddie has his country and westerninterest, and Mark Lindsay did well in the States with his single 'Arizona'.Keith Allison the bass player has cut an old Negle of mine

isOne of the distinctive points about Tommy's singles is the drumming,and he explained to me why.

"I'se always used the same drummer on my records. He works on towith Simon and Garfunkel, and is on all their recorded material. He's somuch in demand far sessions that he won't work unlem he's paid doublethe scale, whits is one hundred and sixty dollars. He can make somethinglike three hu.red thousand dollars a week, just like that."

the rest, add a formidable newforce -- the sentimentalists.

As the undergroundsurfaces, as reggae heads

towards grey, all -embracinganonymity, the power of pop'slachrimose hidden majorityasserts itself ever strongly.

The sentimentalists are

probably over 40 and under15, not so much the hard coreof the old -establishedmumsanddads market, more agrandparent -grandchildmanifestation. As such,chances are that they are

unaware of their importance,'and probably wouldn't careanyway. But signs are that therecord companies are takingincreasing notice of theirrequirements and contributionstowards records sales.

Broadly speaking, the moremaudlin the sentiments (somemight say touching), the betterthey like it. Give them a

chance to wallow in blindness,orphanhood, death, childbirth,and other examples of humansuffering, and they are in theirelement.

Undoubtedly the mostsignificant example of thepower of the sentimentalistshas been the success of RolfHarriss' "Two Little Boys."Granted the timing of itsrelease, just before Christmas,was superb and was guaranteedto touch the hearts andpockets of those indulging in aseasonal excess of goodwilltowards the family circle. Howelse can you account for asong, with origins attribted tothe pick of the pops circaWorld War One (or was it theBoer War?) selling close on onemillion copies in Britain.

"Two Little Boys" wasreleased by EMI. There wasalso the case of "Do You LoveMe Daddy?" by Jim Reevesand some ingratiating brat witha voice of almost saccharineinnocence. That was an

outstanding example of RCAbeing bang on thesentimentalists' target.

But leaving both these bigorganisations behind in the

sniffling stakes is Major Minor,a small independent run by anIrishman called PhilipSolomon. And as we all know,after a fight and a drop of thehard stuff, the Irish likenothing better than to have areally serious cry.

Major Minor must take thecredit for uncovering thesentimentalists. First there wasKaren Young's "Nobody'sChild", a positive flood of atearjerker. It took "The Deal"by Pat Campbell to better thatone. For pure, distilledschmaltz, it has to be the allti me winner - or loser,depending on how you look atit. It didn't do quite so well as"Nobody's Child", but forthose who missed out, itconcerned a dubiousarrangement made between theAlmighty and a father, offeringhis life in return for his wifeand unborn child being spared.They were. He wasn't.

If the tear ducts werestimulated by "The Deal" thensentimentalists will surely sloshabout in a surfeit of dampnesswith the release of Pat's albumlater this month. "Just A QuietConversation" it's called, andamong the gems containedtherein are "Mother Went a'Walking, "The Last Goodbye"and the King Weepie, "Deck OfCards."

Somehow the pop worldfailed to appreciate thesentiments of a lusty effort byDerek Christien entitled,"When A Woman Has ABaby." But if that one flopped,then there are signs that thecosy couple Miki and Griff areon the way to a winner with"The Little Orphans" whichhovers on the edge of RM'sTop 50.

When even the mighty Elvisforesakes his current return tothe straight and narrow rockyroad to pander to thesentimentalists with "Don'tCry Daddy" then things arereally getting serious. But then,El was always a bit of a softieat heart. We shouldn't takethat curling lip too seriously,you know. BRIANMULLIGAN

DANCE TO THE MUSICTHE BEST dance record for a long time is Sly and the FamilyStone's "Thank You (Falettin Me Be Mice Elf Agin)" - despitethe mad spelling. Sly, who wrote, produced and arranged therecord, hardly sings at all, but a few times manages to gasp "Iwant to . . ." before he apparently staggers to the ground, stuckby some dumbing disease. The rest of the group carries onwithout him, chanting lines that don't all fit together yet butwhich do, I'm sure, make a lot more sense than they seem to.The arrangement makes brilliant - economical - use of bubblingwah-wah guitar, and proves that rick, complicated sounds can beharassed to mee the demands of dancers.

There doesn't seem to be another group in the world that candraw from R & B and rock and put together a mixture that willsatisfy the majority of both audiences. Everybody else is eitherbound in by arrangements that are too tight, repetitive, andpredictable for the rock audience, or else so anxious to be "free"that they give nothing for the R & B audience to recognise andrelate to. Yet the two kinds of music are not so different as theirsupporters insist, and share a vocal style that is based on thesame source, gospel.

So we get Mighty Sam or Tyrone Davis singing with'arrangements that say, this is soul, and Chicago singing witharrangements that say, this is new. Soul City's compilation ofMighty Sam's singles of the past three or four years ("MightySoul," Soul City SCM 004) showcases an excellent singer whohas never had a song or an arrangement that drew attention tohim, although "Papa True Love," -Talk To Me", and"Badmouthin'," - particularly the last - are good soulperformances. The weakness is in the stereotyped productions,the Memphis sound at its least inspired.

Tyrone Davis' LP ("Can I Change My Mind," Atlantic 588209) has the great advantage of arrangements that are not soifamiliar, several of them influenced by the rhythms of the Horse,all of them light and helpful in highlighting Davis' technique ofdropping his voice almost to a whisper. The LP confirms a singerrof individual character - despite debts to both Sam Cooke andBobby Bland - who should have become a major figure, if onlyhe had been given better songs for his singles.

The most striking feature of the Chicago LP (CBS 66233) isthe struggle that the singer has to go through in order to comeclose to achieving the effects that Mighty Sam and Tyrone Davis- and hundreds of other black singers - could have got withouteven trying. And by some strange process, the audience ofChicago for some reason admire the attempts of this group'Lwhite singer to be soulful much more than they admire theachievement of Tyrone Davis.

Like a large number of other rock groups, Chicago isessentially an instrumental group. Its aim seems to be toassimilate as many diverse kinds of music as possible, so whilethe bass guitarist plays the familiar Duck Dunn figures, a saxsection plays jazz riffs straight out of Shorty Rogers' 1950 charts(cool big band jazz) and solos that are of slightly more recentvintage - 1962 modern. The flute is 1964 Herbie Mann, guitar -of course - eternal B. B. King. And in all this, the singer goes forsoul, and achieves a style that is reminiscent of the StevieVVinwood one second, Tom Jones the next.

,REVOLUTIONThis kind of criticism may do an injustice to the double LP's

suite of songs, which is advertised in an American music paperwith the following statement, signed by all the members of thegroup: "With this album, we dedicate ourselves, our futures andour energies to the people of the revolution . . . And therevolution in all its forms."

Surely there is more to revolution than simply grabbing bitsout of the past and mixing them together. For my ears, theresult is not only unconvincing, but dishonest. Chicago the groupand "Chicago" the record seem like another stage in thedepressing history of American music which has seen so manywhite singers and musicians claim and receive credit for stylisticchanges that were initiated by black people. One of the mostthorough analyses of this process is provided in the chapter "AConcise Natural History of Soul" in Phyl Garland's "The Soundof Soul" (available from Billboard Bookshelf, New York, for5.95 dollars plus postage).

Phyl Garland - a staff writer for "Ebony" magazine - showshow "serious music critics have consistently ignored black music- original, American - while praising American derivations offormal European writers, and she sketches in the missing historyof black popular and religious singing. Unfortunately she doesnot deal with the post-war phenomenon of professional gospelgroups such as James Cleveland and the Five Blind Boys ofMississippi. But she does have a marvellous 50 -page chapter,"Recording in Memphis," that gives a good feeling of howrecords are put together in the city.

Inevitably, given the recent developments in the politicalhistory of the black American, the book deals with black musicas a separate, distinct section of American culture. But SmokeyRobinson believes - and I agree with him - that music is now"American," and can't pretend to be pure black - or white - ifit is to advance.

So why doesn't producer James Guercio recruit Tyrone Davisto do his singing, instead of ruining the larynxes of the singerswith Blood, Sweat and Tears and Chicago? (There are a coupleof hundred other white groups that could use a good black singertoo; and a couple of hundred good black singers looking forjobs.)

Not soDustyDUSTY SPRINGFIELD: "From Dusty ... With Love". - Brand New Me;Joe; Silly Silly Fool; The Star Of My Show; Let's Talk It Over; Lost; BadCase Of The Blues; Never Love Again; Let Me Get In Your Way; Let's GetTogether Soon (Philips SBL 7927).

The great lady on a ten -track set. There is love here, and warmth andsome great songs. But there are also some disappointments . notably whenDusty seems to be striving too hard for effect. On -song, phrasing -wise, she'sthe guv'noress, but sometimes gets so involved that the full weight of thelyrics gets tucked away. Still, it's a minor point in the sea of Springfieldsuperiority.

"Brand New Me" we know. "Joe" is plaintive, slower; "Silly Fool" issuperb, crackling along with pace and style - with a self -analyticalapproach. Romantic choral -type track next, but the side -one closer "Let'sTalk It Over" hits the heights again ... great work from the backing group.

Then "Lost" - a punchy piece, with a curious deliberation in theselling. Beauty of an arrangement. "Bad Case" tends to lose direction,specially early on, but it's back to form again for "Never Love Again",hauntingly direct styling. Next track is another change of style, a bitmonotonous melodically, but it's an all-out finale, again with chorus.

Not Dusty's best, maybe. Even so, streets ahead of most. - P.J.

ROY ORBISON: "The Big '0' Backed By The Art Movement". LondonStereo SHU 8406. Although Nashville's always been Roy Orbison'srecording base in the past, he now issues an album recorded in London lastyear. Orbison's success story is an incredible one - he remains on top afterten years and it's sheer professionalism that keeps him there.

This is not his best album, but an ambitious one because here Orbisonhas tried something different in his presentation and has broken away froma successful format.

The new format, though, will also be successful. Gone is the full lushorchestra to be replaced by a pop group augmented with strings. Here, heturns his hand to a different type of pop number - there's Wilson Pickett's"Land Of 1,000 Dances", the Platters oldie "Only You" (12 years old??)and the Beach Boys "Help Me Rhonda."

Orbison's performance throughout is faultless and I am sure this LPwill not disappoint any of his many followers. Thoroughly entertaining.R.C.

FRANK ZAPPA: "Hot Rats". - Peaches En Regalia; Willie The Pimp; SonOf Mr. Green Genes; Little Umbrellas; The Gumbo Variations; It Must BeA Camel (Bizarre RSLP 6356).

According to a recent chat with Frank, he and the Bizarre label ranaground a while back and this is material that he left to them. Still, it'shard core Zappa. As expected, it's like the living theatre of record. Veryfreaky and often a strain to relax with. Not bedtime stuff, but "Peaches EnRegalia" is a very good instrumental. *** L.G.

THE FUGS: "The Belle Of Avenue A" (Reprise RSLP 6359).A sickly cover in the wonderful old Fugs fashion houses yet another

fine gutter satire on everything within reach. Parts of it could be comparedto the Dubliners gone mad in the streets of Laredo, the Doors sufferingfrom tracheotomies and tin ears and Berlin marchers with severe colds andnasal twang. A most rewarding effort is Tuli Kupperberg's compositionwith the sophisticated title of 'Bum's Song'. An enthusiastic melody fornights on the lonely prairies. **** L.G.

GRATEFUL DEAD: "Live Dead". - Dark Star; Saint Stephen; TheEleven; Turn On Your Love Light; Death Don't Have No Mercy; Feedback;We Bid You Goodnight (Warner Bros. WS 1830).

One of America's top rock groups present a double album set of nearsymphonic proportions. Over one hour's playing time and only seventracks. Most of it is slow, emotional vocal exercises with moody and oftenvague backing. Occasionally the long musical storyline builds to an organand crying guitar interlude that inspires. Most of the vocals are slightlyrough, but the Dead never really depended on voices. The set should belooked at as an atmospheric unit rather than a series of tracks to beobjectively defined. When you finish, you feel as if you've been throughsomething - an effect you can't get from a single, kids. Very strange studioeffects that may grind your nerves. *** L.G.

PEGGY SCOTT AND JO JO BENSON: "Lover's Heaven" (Polydor 583756). Lover's Heaven; Over The Hill Underground; Magic Fingers; MoneyDon't Satisfy; Knee Deep In Clover; I Want To Love You Baby; SugarMakers; True Soul Lovin'; We're Gonna Get Back Together; Show It; BigCity Blues.

One of America's best soul duo's - and one which is curiously neglectedin Britain, - go through an almost textbook exercise in what soul is allabout. One of the best soul albums for a long time, with some beautifulsongs, such as "Lover's Heaven" and "I Want To Love You Baby". Wellproduced. Hope it makes it. T.L.

The first album from a new duo of Judy Dyble - who was with theFairport Convention and ex -Them member Jackie McAuley. Soft, almostgentle songs - far removed from the roughness of Them or the growingethnic quality of Fairport Convention. Slight references to other tunes intheir songs ("Children Of Oare" sounds slightly like "We Three Kings") butnevertheless, this album has been compiled with care and effort. Intelligentarrangements which include use of clarinet, auto -harp, organ, piano, celesteand harpsichord. A good introductory album.

THE GRASS ROOTS: "Leaving It All Behind" (Stateside SSL 5012).Very steady and staunch pop with brass and competent vocals. Not

meant to provoke thought, but easily distracts. Sid Feller, whom everyonerecognises as a wonderful, whimsical feller, arranged the brass and stringsthat support sturdy songs lacking nothing except depth - and that's nocrime in some circles. *** L.G.

Some great materialincluding Peggy Scott and Jo Jo Benson's "Pickin' Wild Mountain Berries"and Betty Harris's "There's A Break In The Road". A good album for soulfreaks. R.P.

As the titles tells you, this is the BEST of Tommy James And TheShondells. It includes the chart topping "Mony Mony" as well as thecuriously underrated "Crystal Blue Persuasion". The group are undergoingreassessment by some underground circles in America who are beginning tosee that James is a great rock 'n' roller. Every fan will want to get all ofJames's biggie's all on one album. T.M.

Ramsey Lewis's mixture of jazz with pop and soul music never variesfrom his own well -developed style - and on this album there are anotherten examples of his piano playing. Lewis always keeps a subtle emotionalpitch on his music which makes it good for grooving to at parties. But as aserious attempt at jazz, Lewis falls down. He's strictly middle-of-the-road.But he's good at what he does - and he's got a lot of fans who think thesame. R.P.

When I was a young lad down in the depth's of Plymouth in Devon, ourthree monthly treat was the visit of one Alan Bown Set to yon localdiscotheque. In those days it was "Extraaa! Extraaa! Read All About It! ..." Then they made a radical change to more progressive scenes culminatingin their latest album. A very pleasant and inventive group, they have thetalent and the writing power to break through. R.P.

THE MUSICAL THEATRE: "A Revolutionary Revelation" (Pye JanusNSPL 28128). Revolution; We Want; Computer World; You Only ReapWhat You Sow; Reflections In The Life Of An Assassin; There Must Be ABetter Way Of Life; A Love Pill; Before The Apple; I've Seen God In ManyPlaces; A Revolutionary Revelation.

As the social climate of America deteriorates, rock music is increasinglybecoming a weapon of protest. Steppenwolf's latest album "Monster" andJefferson Airplane's "Volunteers" both concentrate on the theme. Andnow The Musical Theatre. Unfortunately they lack all sublety and haveproduced a propagandist album of minimal effect. Sample lyric: "Mrs.Pellegrini gets drunk on a Martini, but forbids her child to get high onmarijuana." So what? Whatever the purpose behind this album, it hassucceeded in bringing a number of undistinguished tunes to some banallyrics. Perhaps in America where the problems are more immediate itmeans more. C.A.

MISSISSIPPI JOE CALLICOTT: "Presenting the Country Blues" (CBSBlue Horizon 63227). a 69 -year -old expert in this field - a voicewell-worn, long-time retired, but now coping with falsetto exercises withauthentic skill. Extremely specialist, naturally, but interesting.

VARIOUS ARTISTS: "The Best Of Bacharach" (Fontana Special SFL13193. Dusty Springfield, Walker Brothers, Frankie Vaughan, MadelineBell, Julie Rogers, etc., plus a splendid Dee Dee Warwick reading of"Alfie". Puts in perspective the melodic and lyric talents of the composer.And he's married to Angie Dickinson, too!

FRANKIE LAINE: "The Great Years, Volume 1" (Fontana Special SFL13184). Ole leather -lungs himself, and it's back to 1947 when he launchedhimself loudly with "That's My Desire". Some rate him just as a very vocalcowboy, but there is a wider range to his talent. Try: "Exactly Like You",for instance.

SHIRLEY AND JOHNNY: "This Is . . . " (Philips SBL 79191. Goodarrangements here for a duo still in search of the big single. Best samples ofthis young British duo: "Don't Make Me Over", and a surprisinglyre -adjusted "River Deep" and some unfortunate schmaltz.

MIGHTY SAM: "Mighty Soul". (Soul City SCM 004). A Papa Donproduction and one which sustains interest for the specialist addict butloses out for the real mood -switch fans. A hard, live-in, but basically elasticvoice. Fifteen tracks, some lyrically wild.

MAVIS STAPLES: "Mavis Staples". (Stax SXATS 1026). Now here's ahighly promising new gal, warmly bluesy and controlled from theproduction box by Steve Cropper. "Son Of A Preacher Man", "Chained","A House Is Not A Home" show up best her eloquent phrasing and hersubdued sense of emotion. This one is worth trying.

ANNIE BRIGHT: Stand Up AndBe Counted; I Think I'll Be LeavingTonight (Columbia DB 8666). I

actually lust after t"is voice. It's gota touch of the huskiness, a lot ofthe rirasing ability and this ischart -worthy material, what's more.Annie starts bluesily but quietly,then fair explodes into a chorus. Ithink it, and she, stands out. Do tryit. CHART CHANCE.

SHOCKING BLUE: Mighty Joe;Wild Wind (Penny Farthing 713).Potentially as big as "Venus" and,to my mind, more directlycommercial. Rolling rhythm,instrumental, then more excellencesfrom the fantastic Mariska Veres.Disc already moving, clapper -wiseon the continent. Nice tight sound,riff -based. Watch it. CHART CERT.

HARRY SECOMBE: The Song OfSanta Vittoria; To Learn To Love(Philips 1841). Sub -titled "Stay",this is a movie theme and one ofthose big, big tenor jobs that suitschubby Harry more than neatly. Norampaging chart -buster, but a

steady seller which could easilym ake it. Sympathetic backing.CHART CHANCE.

SLADE: Shape Of Things ToCome; C'mon, C'mon (Fontana TF1079). Very powerful and ratherintuitive production here. Grouphas strong basic attack and fairly gobeserk through the vocal chorus.It's persistent music, heavy enough,

but doesn't get out of hand.Something pretty saleable here.CHART CHANCE.

KING CRIMSON: Cat Food; Groon(Island WIP 6080). Re -jiggedpersonnel, stereo single and one forthe club devotees of thisso -promising team. It's involved,powerful, gimmicky, outer-spacey,but it doesn't really lose direction.An acquired taste, actually, but apossible. CHART CHANCE.

TAM WHITE: Lewis Carroll;Future Thoughts (Middle Earth104). Good lyrics here for thesoft -voiced talent. He has an urgingway with this, his own material ...somehow reminiscent of "Feelin'Groovy" melodically, but with astring backing and a great deal ofcharm. But it only needs a nudge tomake it. CHART CHANCE.

FAMILY DOGG: When TomorrowComes Tomorrow (Bell 1100). Thisis gentler, more directly tuneful,than some of their earlier efforts,but chartworthy for all that, Malelead, cleverly laid down harmonies,and one of those straight romantic,sometimes schmaltzy little songs.Bit disappointing, actually. Butsurely a hit. CHART CERT.

DREAM POLICE: I'll Be Home InA Day Or So (Decca F 12998).Marmalade man Junior Campbellproduced: big strings, very goodlead voice and song which registersfirst time. Commended.***

DANNY RAY AND THEFALCONS: The Scorpion (MCA5037). Instrumental of faircatchiness, mostly organ, pipe,shuffly rhythm. Sak-ish.""

KENNY YOUNG: Shine On RubyMountain (CBS 4870). Hit -writeron a typically commercial piece ...sing -along really. But samey.**

JACKIE TRENT: l'It Be Near You(Pye 17918). Okay ballad from themusical "Nell" which stars Jackie.Very pleasant in show -tune style.**

VALVERDE BROTHERS: With AGirl Like You (CBS 4868). Still notquite the right material for thistalented team. Minor -key start butit builds.**

THE BIGGEST PROBLEM for theFoundations, as far as Colin Youngis concerned, is the lack of timethey've had in which to rearrangetheir state act.

"We've been doing the samenumbers on stage for the past twoyears", he explained with disgust."It can get really stale then, but wejust haven't had the opportunity toset aside several weeks to rehearse.

"It's s'tuations like this that canlead to groups messing about withdruns, because of the frustrationsthat build up. We've been using ourhits on stage and about the onlyother number we do that's not ourown is Sonny Boy Williamson's'Help Me'. Really we find theteenybopper scene a drag, and I

think ballrooms are dying anyway."For these reasons the

Foundations are planning to takesome time out for heavy rehearsals,between visits to the studio to putthe finishing touches to theirforthcoming album.

"We've been in the studios for awhile now completing the album,"Colin told me, adding an aside thathe didn't like other people to buyhim drinks since he alwayspreferred doubles! "All of thetracks are our own compositions.It's mainly myself and EricAllendale who write, but the rest ofthe group seem to be taking a

greater interest now, particularlyTony Gomes. I wrote 'Born To LiveBorn To Die', which was released asa single, but didn't do too well.Since then I haven't put mymaterial on an A side. Well a man'sgotta live!"

The group's current single is

'Take A Girl Like You', which is aBill Martin and Phil Coultercomposition.

"One of the other problems ofworking continuously is that younever have time to organise yourprivate life," Colin told me. "Anytime you're not travelling is spentsleeping to catch up. I have a fewgirlfriends, but with all the timewe're away I don't think it's reallyfair to any girl. Naturally there aretemptations, and you always getthe girls who get 'knocked out' overyou at gigs.

"I haven't written to my fatherfor a long time. He didn't want meto go into music, but I'd travelledto Britain with him several times,and I liked the country, so I

decided to stay and build up myown career anyway. Now I don'tget in touch because if I did I'dhave to go into all the explanationsof what exactly I'm doing andexplain my financial situation. So Idon't bother! Maybe when I've goteverything organised."

Which is liable to be quite sometime, since the Foundations are setfor a two month coast to coast tourof America in June and July, andprior to this they will be visitingSweden, Denmark, Austria andSpain, where they have had fournumber one hits. Group organistTony Gomez arrived to join us atthis point, and launched intoenthusiastic conversation on justsome of the people whoseinfluences he has absorbed, or thosehe has admired.

"We're involving a lot moreprogressive sounds into our materialnow. I like Led Zeppelin, Love,Chicago and Blood, Sweat andTears. Naturally I'm particularlyinterested in organists and thatoften involves a jazz feel. I sawRoland Kirk down at Ronnie's andhe was quite incredible. Oneevening he went into the streetoutside blowing away, and he wasjust like the Pied Piper!

"I find Keith Emerson to bevery interesting, he's got a lot ofnice ideas. Vincent Crane, ofAtomic Rooster is quite good, buthe's not really saying anythingnew. I find some classical music tobe very relaxing, I particularly likeAlbinoni."

In case he should soundover -confident, expounding his

views on other musicians, Tonyadded. "As an organist I've got ahell of a long way to go. It takes alot to master."

But it's not just music aboutwhich Tony talks at length. Duringour meeting the conversationprogressed from the fact that hewas a mere five foot three in height,to the theory that with man'sevolution the body is becomingsmaller, because brute strength is

no longer so necessary, and thebrain becoming larger.

"It's very hard to imagine," saidTony, "But an experiment wasrecently carried out on a dog,keeping its brain functioning byelectric impulses after it was dead.Imagine what knowledge could bestored and used if this was donewith men."

Tony has also been delving intothe realms of the supernatural, andrelated a story involving a friendwho's young son became convincedthat someone came into his room atnights, and would actually pointout the visiting 'boy'. Then laterthe family discovered that a youngboy had died in the house. At thatpoint the discussion got a little too'eerie' for lunch time listening, andas the barman dipped the lights, wefled to the light of day!

No. 1 SYLVIA McNEILLSYLVIA McNEILL is a girl of the seventies in every way. Pictured here in a jaunty cap teaming with a brownvelvet trouser suit, she still retains a feminine flair. She knows her own mind, and decided at the age of twelve,when she worked with a school folk group, that singing would be her career. Since then Sylvia has worked withLiverpool group, the Escorts, covering much of the world, formed her own group Tricycle and even run her ownmusic agency in Yorkshire. Now, at the age of twenty-two, Sylvia has been acknowledged for her vocal ability bytelevision producer Jack Good, who flew from Hollywood to record her current solo single 'Ugly Man', on RCA1922.

IT COMES PACKAGED as asuccess story. Labelled theRolling Stones, Traffic,Spooky Tooth, the Move ... italso mentions Jimmy Miller -producer.

Hit records are Miller'sprofession. The 'Stones owehim `Jumpin' Jack Flash',`Beggar's Banquet', 'HonkyTonk Women' and 'Let ItBleed'. The Traffic owe himeverything they've recorded.He's been to the top of thecharts with the Move's`Blackberry Way' and he'slooked after the developmentof Spooky Tooth. And nowhe's moving into radio - withRadio Geronimo, a legalstation operating from MonteCarlo.

Miller is a tall cowboyishAmerican with delicate facialfeatures. He could have been afilm actor in countless westerns- as the goodie, of course.Instead he is a record producer.He explains: "I came toEngland on September 1, 1966- at 7.40 am.

"I'd been trying to producerecords in the States but it wasdifficult to get recordcompanies interested. Thetrouble was that I had no trackrecords - no string of hits - soI had to finance my owncut-price sessions by gettingsome friends in to do sessionwork for me and then sneakoff to a non-union studio tomake the record.

"Then, when we hadrecorded it, I'd search throughthe telephone directory forrecord companies. I'd pick oneand go and try and sell therecord to them - asking forabout 500 dollars. Lookingback I can see that they'd havehad more respect for me if I'dasked for 50,000 dollars.

"As it was, of course, therecord company had a pile ofrecords - some costing 30,000dollars - so when it came toplugging mine it came at thebottom of the pile.

"So to succeed you had tofirst hype your own recordcompany into promoting yourrecord. I suppose abouttwo-thirds of them could havebeen hits if they'd beenpushed.

"Anyway, the first person

who had any faith in me was aguy called Chris Blackwell (theManaging Director of Britain'sIsland Records). I'd done arecord called 'Insence' by theAnglos and Chris liked it andbrought it out in Britain.

"All the pirates played therecord, but unfortunately, thedistribution wasn't so good asit is now and although it washeard quite a lot it wasn't a hit.But Chris asked me to comeover - and so I came.

"The first record I did overhere was `Gimmie Some Lovin'by the Spencer Davies Group.That made number two overhere and in the States aboutten record companies startedbidding for it. For that firstyear I produced just Islandartists. After that I becameindependent - and the onlytwo Island acts I continued toproduce were Spooky Toothand Traffic.

"Then came the RollingStones. People often say thatbrought them back from the`Satanic Majesties . . .' album.But the 'Stones wereresponsible for that. I'm not apositive producer. I share theartists hang-ups. In a way I'mthe liason between them andthe business set-up. I'mcertainly no Phil Spectorimposing my will on the artists.

"So I'm not the person whobrought the 'Stones back. Inthe beginning of ourrelationship together theywould come into the studio inMarch and ask how eachother's Christmas had gone.They really hadn't seen eachother for that time.

"Now, they're back doingtours. It's required courage forthem to do that. It used totake them three nights to getone song but now they'redoing a song a night. They'replaying as a group again.

"But it was after the RollingStones that I was asked to dothe Move's 'Blackberry Way'. Imet Tony Secunda, the group'smanager, during that time andwe got talking in depth. Ourideas seemed beautifullysimilar. But in dissimilar areas,if you see what I mean. Tonywas interested in the businessside of the industry and I wasinterested in recording.

"So we've formed our owncompany - called Ringmakerat the moment. Some officesare complete jokes - theydon't care about business,while others are completely theother way round and don'tcare about the artists. We hopeto avoid that by having aperfect balance. At themoment we are a productioncompany, music publishers,management agency andpublicity agency."

And there's RadioGeronimo. A commercialstation - very similar in its

_____hu_siness operation to RadioLuxembOurg - which nt themoment broadcasts in Englishlate on Saturday nights. Milleris very excited about theproject.

"The aim of our company isso big that I don't want tosound like blowing steam. Butthe radio station concept isreally an extension from thefinished record product. Welive in a country where there'sone pop station to cater for anation's pop taste.

"Radio Geronimo hopes togive an alternative. The breadcomes from advertisers - butthey won't have editorialcontrol over the programmes.

"We've put out checksignals on Saturday nights andwe're happy with the results.We're not looking to makemoney. It'll be enough if it justpays for itself. We hope tomake money in our recordventures. The musical policywill be rather like the betterFM stations in tthe States. Wehope to sense what peoplewant from their letters - andwe hope to have jazz, classicalmusic, gospel, r and b. Theonly criteria will be the music'smerit.

"But the whole media hasto be changed. You ask me inwhich direction the change willcome. I can only say you'llcertainly notice the differenceonce changes have been made."

Interview over. JimmyMiller has spared enough time.There was a photo call, theradio station, Ginger Baker'sAirforce album and the newRolling Stones album to dealwith.
