GERRY without the Pacemakers. He certainlylooks as though he's having a whale of a timehere. He's also well up the charts with his latest
disc "I'm The One," a self -penned item that hasalready sold well over the quarter million mark
for him. (R.M. Pic by Dezo Hoffman).

NOW WHAT ABOUT U.S.COVER VERSIONS?
PLEASE stop moaning about British records not beingoriginal. Why shouldn't Brian Poole, The Beatles, etc.,
delve into the past for material, when American stars likeConnie Francis, Del Shannon, Peggy March and JohnnyTillotson and so on cover the best of the current Britishmaterial. There's a big difference between revivals and coverversions and the quicker people realise it, the better allround.-Sammy Donnachie, 4 Comely Park Street, Gallow-gate, Glasgow, E.1. L.P. Winner.
ANTICS?READER N. Farrington writes
of the foolish antics of Freddieand the Dreamers. Well, withoutthese antics, the group would benothing more than any other group.Now he has something differentto offer. Carry on as before.Freddie and the Dreamers.-GeorgeOvenell, 28 The Charne, Otford,Rye Lane, Sevenoaks, Kent.
EQUALS
AT last it looks as if the olddistinction between British and
American records will die down.Support of British discs just becausethey are British is completelysquare in every way (flag-wavingwent out with the Boer War), andit made disc -buyers and dee-jaysboring and narrow-minded. NowBritish discs are established in theStates, and R and B sweeps manyof the great Americans into ourcharts. Long may the Beatles, andthe Kingsmen, Cliff Richard, andBig Dee Irwin be in the samecharts together.-S. D. Hoggart, 21Central Avenue, Leicester.
FROM THEM TO USDEAR Editor Jimmy
and Gang:-Having alovely time here in Wales,but we don't understandwhat they're talkingabout! Ta-Ta and bestwishes. - Paul, John,George, Ringo, GeorgeCinq Hotel, Paris.
JOHNNY TILLOT-SON - He coveredKenny Lynch's hit" You can neverstop me lovingyou" and took itinto the U.S. Top
Twenty.
HALEY TOUREWS now comes that Bill
Haley and the Comets arehoping to come to Britain thisYear. They play the Star Club inHamburg in April and tour U.S.Army bases in Germany andFrance during May. Their man-ager, Jolly Joyce, is hoping fora British tour. Come on agents,make this a certainty. Incidentally,how about Decca issuing "CorrineCorrina" as a single, possiblybacked by "Dinah" from the "BillHaley's Chicks" album - FredJackson, President, Bill Haley Fan -Club, 69 Lindale Gardens, Black-pool.
EARTHYTHE Liverpool scene is beginning
to fade and it will go downas another craze, leaving behindthe groups and singers who havedeservedly achieved success.Among them is Cilia Black, but sheis just on the verge of what shouldbe a great career. Her voicereflects the atmosphere of thedown-to-earth northern city I thinkshe is one of the best girl singersin the country-equal to ShirleyBassey.-Plerre Wolfes, 177 LindonCourt, Brunswick Road, Ealing,London. HELEN TELLS PETER JONES ABOUT THE CHOICE OF HER NEW DISC3
WILL she . . . or won'tshe? Helen Shapiro,
I mean. Will her versionof "Fever" mark atriumphant return to ahigh place in thecharts? Or is it goingto continue its yo-yodisplay around the 30-40 mark?
Helen, in any case one ofthe best stylists in the busi-ness, tripped along confi-dently for a chat about thedisc. And I put it to her that
Why I made`FEVER'
she must have known there'dbe criticism for "having thenerve" to tackle a huge -sell-ing song as performed byPeggy Lee.
"Sure," said Helen. "Butit's like this. I've wanted todo 'Fever' for quite a longtime. Well, when I was only

sixteen, my manager thoughtI was too young to cope withthe lyrics. So I waited.
"But, on stage, I did theactual Peggy Lee version ina routine with the Treble -Tones. And it was one of themost popular items in theact. Just Bongoes and bassguitar. So we got lots ofletters.
"When I finally got aroundto recording it, I realisedthat it ought to have a com-pletely different arrangement-which is where JohnnyKeating comes in.
"Criticism, yes. But fromPeggy Lee FANS. Most ofthe younger buyers just don'tknow about Peggy Lee, so itcame up as a new numberfor them."
Manager Alan Paramorcame in to say: "With thecoming of the group scene,we had to think about re-modelling Helen. We didn'twant to make her sound likea one - girl Ronettes' group,but something different WASneeded."
So now Helen waits. She'dlike a big hit disc, no ques-tion of that. But hearingabout her career, generally,1 realised she's way out ofthe category whicn positivelyREQUIRES a hit to keepgoing.
something few people out-side Newcastle realise is thatHelen recently made hercabaret debut . . . at theplush Dolce Vita, there. Shewent on around midnight,sang for 45 minutes eachnight -her longest act yet.And she admits: "I was very

nervous about it. But in notime I was knocked out bythe way things went."
STANDARDS
"An ovation -an enormousovation - that's what shegot," said Alan Paramor.Helen included a load ofstandards, plus a Judy Gar-land medley. She went likea bomb, says now: "If allcabaret is like that . . . well,roll on some more dates."
Lined up for this year:trips to Spain, Belgium,Poland. Yes, Poland . . .
behind the Iron Curtain,where pop singing is notregarded as a desirable cul-
tural import. Said Helen: "Igot fan letters and Christmascards from people in Russiaand Poland."
Remember that she'salready toured in: the States,South Africa, Canada, Israel,Australia, New Zealand,France, Germany, Sweden,Holland, Italy. Malta is onthe short list -for a visit -"we get a lot of letters fromthere."
All this -and she's still ateenager!
Watch her work. She copeswith blues, Beatle-songs like"I saw him standing there,""What'd I say" - and ofcourse, the controversial"Fever."
Cabaret has given moresuccess and maturity to thisalready astonishingly maturegirl. She's always eager totalk music, music, music.And she's only too aware ofthe fickleness of the popscene, where a slipped discdraws the knock -commen-tators like bees round theold honey -pot.
Whether "Fever" ceases it'syo-yo-ing and starts go-go-ingis obviously important. ToHelen, her management, herfans.
But if she never madeanother disc, I reckon she'dstill earn a fortune workingthe show -spots . . . of thewhole pershin' world.

Thebig
ONE of the mystery menof the U.S. recording
scene is currently here inBritain following the inter-ests of his artistes. His nameis Phil Spector, and by nowjust about everyone inter-ested in the recording scenewill have heard of this off-beat young record producer.He's appeared in "Ready -Steady -Go" and "Juke BoxJury"-in the latter he spokewith disarming frankness-and to my mind truth.
Phil is the owner of thetop U.S. record companyPhilles, and for two yearson and off he has been pro-ducing discs by the Crystals,Bob. B. Soxx and the BlueJeans, Darlene Love andmore recently the Ronettes.Yet the story of Phil Spectorhimself, his sound and hissuccess is more interestingthan any of his artistes.
BROKE UPPhil started off some five
or more years ago when heformed a singing groupcalled the Teddy Bears. Their"To Know Him Is To LoveHim" has since become apop standard - Phil wroteboth sides of the disc too.The flip "Don't You WorryMy Little Pet" was a con-fused compulsive rocker, theopposite in style to the topside.
"I guess that was the be-ginning of my 'instrumental

TO PHIL SPECTOR
flip' idea," Phil told mejokingly. "After that thegroup broke up, and the girllead singer continued on herown, although we let heruse the group name. 'OhWhy' was her release."
"I left the recording scenefor several years then, andstudied law. I also travelledaround quite a lot and in1961 together with someother guys we formed Phillesrecords. The first disc was"There's No Other" by theCrystals. It was a big hit inthe States and so was the.follow-up "Uptown." Butthen I drifted away forseveral months, workingfree-lance for many big re-cord labels like Liberty, etc.I came back and bought mypartners out, and from thenon I really got the set-upgoing."
Discs like "He's A Rebel,""He's Sure The Boy I Love,""Da Doo Ron Ron" and"Then He Kissed Me" were
hits for the Crystals on bothsides of the Atlantic whilePhil added to his stable withBob B. Soxx and the BlueJeans who hit it with theirfantastic "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" and "Why Do LoversBreak Each Others Hearts."Darlene Love and The Ron-ettes followed, all with hugehits yet the amazing thingis that so far only FIFTEENdiscs have been issued byPhilles.
GIMMICKS"My belief is that every
disc issued should be a hit.Big labels put out hundredsof discs, but every one I putout I intend for the charts.People are amazed by mymeasure of success. The bigrecord companies strive toget the Phil Spector soundand it gets very farcical.
"Sometimes I use little off-beat gimmicks on my discs.Like three pianos, or just

one mike, or a chain on thepiano. The big companiesthink I do this on EVERYdisc. So they try to copy it!Ridiculous . . .
"Our recording sessionsare more like parties. Wehave sandwiches, drink, andwe sit around laughing andchatting. But we work,we work hard. The girlsand I really try on thesediscs. Some, most sessionsgo great - one sessionwe cut "He's A Rebel" and"Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah." Butmy theory is that unlessthere's something worth re-cording don't record. I'dsooner wait six months andcome up with a good discrather than bring out regularmediocre discs. That's whyBob B. Soxx haven't had arelease lately.
PROUD"When we started, there
was just the girls and I. Nooffice staff, no advertising,no nothing. We were success-ful purely on the strengthof our discs. I'm proud ofthat.
"Why do I put instru-mentals on the flip.? Severalreasons. The main one isthat I like to give_value-for-money singles. I think thatif the flip is inferior to thetop side, it's bad. Ratherthan make an inferior flipside I'd sooner have mystudio musicians do an in-strumental. And do youknow what? When I firststarted doing this, some pro -motors thought that the girlsmust be superb musicians.When they wanted to bookthem they said `. . . andtell them to bring their in-struments.' Just to clear upa few details Darlene usedto be with Bob B. Soxx.That's how I found thembecause of Darlene. Sheworks on many other discsfor other labels, althoughshe isn't billed-she is agreat talent Darlene Love.
FAVOURITE"My favourite of my own
discs is "Be My Baby" bythe Ronettes. That was cutat the same session as "BabyI Love You," in fact it wascut after "Baby I Love You."But we released them in theother order. I think that the
Ronettes could be very bighere in Britain. I don't knowwhy my artistes should be sobig here when generallyAmerican discs are reallyout, but I think I'm tuningin more to British tastesnow - that's why I'm with-drawing the Crystals "LittleBoy," because I don't thinkit is suitable for the markethere" (see last week's storyin R.M.).
Phil Spector's advertisinggimmick. Used in all histrade mag ads he says itcontrasts well with otherads! He drew it himself.
"I've always liked theBeatles especially "From MeTo You." I guess that thedriving earthy sound of mygroups is similar in a wayto the Beatles. In the Stateseveryone in the trade isworried about British artistestaking over - the first signcame when U.S. artistesstarted flopping in Britain.It's the little record com-panies that are doing well inthe States now with theyoung people running them-the industry stateside hasbeen controlled too long byold people. You think youhave it bad here, but youdon't, compared with theStates.
"It makes me feel reallygood to know that Britainappreciates my work. Tohave your discs selling onthe other side of the Atlanticconstantly is wonderful."That's Phil Spector. A nicebloke with forthright views.And a producer of greatrecords. All I know is thatI'm hanging on to my reviewcopy of "Little Boy" likegrim death. . .

BILLY'S NEW BACKINGGROUP
BILLY FURY TALKS
TO PETER JONES
ABOUT THE GAMBLERSBILLY FURY emerged from the gloom, and
brushed away a jungle -creeper, paused re-flectively as two alligators swam a jaw -snappingcourse through a stream. A parakeet let out ashriek of anguish. A monkey chattered in-cessantly.
Bill on Safari? Well, yes-in a way. He wasactually holding a little party to launch his newbacking group, The Gamblers. And the shindigwas held in the fantastic Beachcomber Room ofLondon's Mayfair Hotel.
Said Bill: " You know I'mnot with the Tornados anymore. Well, the problem offinding the right outfit toback me took a bit of sortingout. But Larry first heard ofthese boys and said hewanted me to go along andsort of work out with themat a rehearsal.
" Soon as I heard them, Iknew they'd be right forme. They're very versatile-That's the important point.And they get a good soundon the vocal side as well asinstrumentally. I'm knocked

out with this bunch of New-castle lads.
" Anyway, you'll hear themin a minute of two. I thinkthey're a bit nervous, givinga show like this in themiddle of the afternoon, butyou'll see how good they are.I'm nervous, too. I'm not

singing with them, but I'vegot to do the compere bitand introduce them. Don'tlaugh!"
But Billy also took amoment to consider thescene. The general popscene. He said: " You knowI've always liked doing goodsongs-the R and B sort ofstuff. I did some on thatL.P. with The Tornados.Now the trend is towardsthat sort of thing, which suitsme fine. You know, it sortof gives me a head start on
it. It's the sort of musicwhich has always appealedto me, though I don't wantto miss out on the better sortof ballad, either."
Just one more point: "Thatfilm business? Well, we'dhoped to fit one in beforethe summer season at GreatYarmouth. Now we'll justhave to wait until later . .
But I'm dead keen on gettingback to the film scene. Still,I keep quiet about contractsand that sort of thing. OftenI've said something without
checking with Larry-andbang! Something goes wrongwith it."
Billy marched off, hunch -shouldered. And said fromthe stage: " Now it givesme great pleasure to intro-duce my new group, TheGamblers." The David Jacobs'bit over, Bill joined a partyat one of the tables andclapped as the six boystrooped on.
New suits in a maroon -ysort of colour. Ruffledshirts in the gambling style.

A full-blooded sound, withinteresting vocal work. Theoccasional touch of comedy- and the most impressivething the way they switchedinstruments and vocalsounds. Three differentgamblin' men took leads.
ApplauseMaybe nervous, but they
looked as if they were enjoy-ing themselves, with plentyof smiles and "acting out"of numbers.
They sloped off, with.applause from Press menringing in the ears. Thenposed for pictures by theside of those hungry -lookingalligators.
Said Billy: " Great aren'tthey? They will be doingtheir own act as well asbacking me. They're ex-perienced, too. Did years atthe Majestic Ballroom, inNewcastle. They're off nowfor a stay in Germany, thengo into ballroom dates inBritain. We'll be togetherfor the season in Yarmouth."
The Gamblers' Decca re-lease is " You really got ahold on me," backed with"Can I see you tonight."
And Billy left. Another"safari" successfully nego-tiated.

Yes it's the Ronettes, those three lovelysongstresses who created quite a stir whenthey appeared on the AR -TV show "They SoldA Million" last week. The disc which sold amillion was of course their first disc "Be mybaby," which made the top five here, and thenumber one spot in the States. Although theyhave flown back to the States their follow-up
"Baby I love you" is still rising. Still here isPhil Spector, their manager and record pro-ducer-there's an R.M. feature on him onpage 4 this week in which he reveals somesurprising facts about the Ronettes.
HE Pop scene moves fast.Very fast, indeed. Styles
come and go, and hitmakerswith even more frequency.An artiste may be at thetop one year and be downthe next. He or she may beat the top for years in factand one day find that he orshe means nothing. Nonames needed as examples.
But there's one name thatwill always be prominent inthe pop scene. Prominent notonly on fans lips and in theirminds but also in the charts.The big question is how onearth can Buddy Holly con-tinue to be one of the mostpopular artistes in the worlda full five years after histragic and untimely death?How can his discs waxedfive, six, seven, or eightyears ago still make thecharts, still sound up-to-date,when his pop contemporariesof the time sound out -datedand crude?
QUALITYAnd the biggest question
of all is why does everyonelike Buddy Holly. Pop, R &B, C & W, Jazz fans all likeBuddy. Genuinely like him.There are few boys or girlswho aren't fans in onedegree or another of Buddy.Whenever the name Holly ismentioned you hear one oftwo comments.
"He's STILL bringing outrecords?" and/or "He's great.Such a pity . . ." And thereare the faithful fans who will

DDY THE FAITHFUL FA5 YEARS AGO BUDDY HOLLY DIED. WHY
DO HIS DISCS STILL SELL FANTASTICALLY
WELL ALL OVER THE WORLD?
buy every Holly release. It'sno use saying 'regardless ofquality'. Even non -Holly fansadmit that his standard isunusually high. That's onereason for his success.
In all of Buddy's discs,there can't be more thanhalf a dozen that could becalled sub -standard. Andeven on these the fault lieswith the backing or thesong, not with Buddy. EveryHolly flip side has been of anincredibly high standard.None have been much worsethan the too side. Most havebeen as good - a few better.His few L.P's are a joy tolisten to and all his discshave been carefully andtactfully released by Coral -despite some accusations tothe contrary.
Many of today's youngrecord buyers don't remem-ber the days when Buddywas alive. The hey -day ofrock when at one time Buddyand the Crickets had no lessthan four discs in our toptwenty. They toured herewith immense success andless than a year later - aphenomenally successful year
by
WESLEYLAINE
-Buddy was killed. His firstposthumous hit "It Doesn'tMatter Anymore" soldmillions and has sincebecome a standard. InBritain his success has beenphenomenal - only last yearBuddy scored with anothertop five entries. The Corallabel must exist on BuddyHolly for no other artisteshave hits on that label.
HITSIn the States Buddy's
singles all do reasonably wellwithout making the charts.But his L.P's all sell fan-tastically well - "BuddyHolly Story" Volume 1 hasbeen on the charts for noless than 160 weeks! And his"Reminiscing" album shotup to the top few L.P'sabout a year ago. His fanclubs in every land are
booming and everyone con-nected with Buddy in hislifetime remembers him withaffection. He is spoken ofalmost in awe by people likeTrini Lopez, Dave Brubeckand Roy Orbison - allstaunch Holly admirers. Thefans who saw him in Britainknow they have witnessed apriceless experience. But sofar no-one has managed toobtain any film of Buddydespite many efforts to doSO.
Buddy's manager NormanPetty so far has still sometracks to release. We haveno doubt he will give Buddy'sfans the best deal possible-as he always has done. Andbetween them, Norman Petty,the millions of Buddy Hollyfans all over the world andall Buddy's friends andrelations have showed theworld that Buddy was one ofthe greatest musical talentsthat ever lived. A man whorose above any petty fad orcraze to produce some of thegreatest pop records in theworld, and a host of faithfulfans who will be his fansuntil the day they die.
BUDDY HOLLY. There are still some eleven tracks due to be issued by Norman Petty-all of them superb well -produced numbers. The tapes are already in Britain and should
be issued soon.

THE NEW BIG SOUND: Baliha'i; I've grown accustomed toher face; South of the border;Twango; Moonlight and roses; Myfavourite things; The shell( ofAraby; Jenny; Baubles, banglesand beads; By myself; Nevada;Pagan love song. (Pye NPL 18088).
WHAT a magnificent album.Laurie Johnson can alwaysbe counted on to turn up with
something brilliant but this issurely one of his best ever. Itsizzles all the way. It kills off theassumption that big bands have noplace on the scene these days. Noone could surely fail to enjoy thisone. It must appeal strongly, ifeven to the older record customer.More please Pye.

the title of Tommy Roe's re-cent hit and use it as the label
to identify Jimmie Rodgers. He is,without doubt, "The Folk Singer."Jim's gentle voice is in fine formon this set. The programme com-prises most of the top "pop" folkhits and should go down well withcustomers in both fields. Worth aspin.

Pye GoldenGuinea GGL 0246.
NUMBER three in the best-selling Pye series. As beforethe sound is as close as pos-
sible to the original waxings but.naturally, not one hundred percent smack on the button. For thosewho can't afford to buy all thesingle hits they enjoy, this is th-Jobvious answer. Can't see it dcanything else but sell big.

CONTRASTING with the wildpop beat comes this controlledswing as purveyed by Peggy
Lee and a bunch of top jazz men.Good programme of songs sungin Peggy's inimitable style makethis a must for any Lee collection.Oh so smooth and soothing thisone. A swinging opener and a nicemixture of beat and ballad fromthen on. Good, good, good!

A good disc for dancing, thoughnot one, I feel, for the charts. TheMarketts are a most competentcombo and, as this set is dedicatedto car bugs, the odd horn -typesounds lend atmosphere. An aboveaverage album which could drawin a crowd of customers onceheard.

DANNY STREETThe eyes of the young ones;
Someone as wonderful as you(Philips BF 1309).rilENDER sort of ballad from1 Danny who is given the benefit
of a gentle Ivor Raymondebacking. It's no different or specialto many others, but this class stuffalways has appeal. From the film" The Leather Boys." Flip isanother gentle song, with quite abit of sentimentality about it.

LITTLE EVALet's start the party again;
Please hurt me (Colpix PX 11019).THERE'S a U.S. Bonds type
party intro on this one. Andthe number is a medium
beater with usual -style Little Evavocal work. Not another hit forher - it's not a terribly goodsong - but sales should be O.K.Flip is a tenderer ballad withmore commercial chance probablythan side one. Plaintive.
* * *
BOBBY RYDELLUntil I met you; New love
(Cameo -Parkway CP 601).BIT of an off -beat side fromBobby. It's a dramatic typesong without the usual lilting
quality that we associate with'Bobby. There's a build and buildflavour, and this should do wellwithout being another "ForgetHim." Flip is a lighter piece withsome good instrumental work, andthe usual impeccable vocal fromBobby.
* * *
KEN DODDEight by ten; I'll love you
tenderly (Columbia DB 7191).KEN DODD takes another recent
Bill Anderson number and in-jects it with his own special
appeal. It's a lovely song andKen's vast following should seethis into the lower half of thecharts at least. But there's onedifficulty - in Britain we callPhotographs of this size ten byeight! Flip is a jauntier sort ofnumber with loads of appeal, anda great performance once again.* * * *
RAY CHARLESThat lucky old sun; Mississippi
mud (HMV POP 1251).7111HE old Negro spiritual numberI is given a typical Ray Charles
treatment. There's plenty ofRaelets, and although thearrangement isn't any better thanany of his others, the vocal ,on thisone is pretty tremendous. Veryreminiscent of his great "Georgia."Perhaps too emotional to make thetwenty -but a hit all the same. Flipis a gay -time treatment of theoldie.

special (Philips BF 1313).THERE'S the usual dramatic
type style from Dusty onthis breezy follow up to
her "I only want to be withyou," also high in the States.This one follows the samepattern without having quite thesame appeal - nevertheless it'sgood enough to make the lists.A slight Phil Spector sound onthis one, and a coloured feelcomes through strongly. what they say (Decca F 11831).
NEWIE from Heinz is rightout of the "Just likeEddie" mould. It's a
plaintive Geoff Goddard pennednumber with a strange- appeal,both commercial and pleasant.It's right out of the rut asfar as Heinz or anyone is con-cerned and it could easily bea great big hit. We hope soanyway. Flip isn't as good -again it's a Joe Meek record-ing, and partly one of Joe'scompositions.

NEW one from Big Dee isagain an ultra commercialsounding R & B flavoured
affair. The familiar tune is wellcontrolled by Dee and it tendsto grow on YOU. Not on hiscurrent label though, and with-out the Little Eva type girl,it may not do as well as"Swinging on a star" -but it'sstill pretty good. Flip is aheavy slow beater.

JACK JONES performs beautifullyon "Charade" from the film. Butthis isn't really for Britain. (LondonHLR 9844).THE IMPRESSIONS, that great Rand B group continue making fab-ulous discs with "Talking About mybaby." Too advanced for here.(HMV POP 1262).JEANNIE AND HER REDHEADS.Gimmicky comedy disc aboutanimals in clothes called "Animalduds." Strictly for the birds. (DeccaF 11829).ALEX HARVEY together with hissoul band makes a great job of theR and B classic "I just wannamake love to you." (Polydor NH52264).
RUSSELL BYRD and a double-sider entitled "Hitch -hike." A genR and B for the hip kids but not anational disc. (Sue WI 305).BETTY EVERETT has a big U.S.hit with her bluesy "You're nogood." Again too advanced forBritain -but just about. (StatesideSS 259).JIMMY McGRIFF and a lovelyorgan lead affair "All about mygirl." Bluesy, danceable and maybea surprise biggie. I learned how to yodel; Louis-iana Manta (Decca F 11825).
IHERE'S a fast country styledbeat on this well - performedeffort. It's a Joe Meek RGM
sound recording. And there's loadsof yodelling packed into the off -beataffair. You either love yodellingor hate it, and one thing's for sure.All the ones who do, will love thisamusing disc. Flip is a brightR & 13 style beater with loads ofappeal, and a Presley type vocal.Could be a take -off . . .
* * * *JOHNNY DEVLIN
Sometimes; If you want someone(Pye 15598).TOGETHER with the Detours,I Johnny has a go at this
typical teen - styled number.There's a group sound here, multi -tracking, and a bright backing.Maybe not a hit, but certainly agood seller nevertheless. Flip is aheavy beat ballad with lots ofappeal.
* * *ALAN ELSDON & MICK EMERY
Tennesses stud; Titanic (Colum-bia DB 7202).
FUNNY thing this. Alan and hisband giving a country num-ber a Bo Diddley treatment.
Powerful and compelling withloads of appeal, and commercialchances. The old country numberabout the fiery horse still soundsgood with this fast-ish treatment.Bluesy and exciting wih shadesof trad. Flip is a story -type num-ber with a folksy quality.
* * *THE PRESIDENTS
Let the sun shine in; Candy man(Decca F 11826).rrHERE'S a good Ray Charles
"What'd I say" type beat onthis old Teddy Randazzo num-
ber. It's a powerful beat effortwith some good vocal from theboys. The number is good andit tends to build up quite a lot.We liked it, and reckon it standsa good chance. Flip, the new BrianPoole number is given an R & Btype treatment.
* * * *MARY MAY
Anyone who had a heart; Theysay it's wonderful (Fontana TF440).
MARY gets in first with herversion of the big U.S. DionneWarwick hit. She has com-
petition but her version is beau-tifully performed. Her delicate voicecomes over well on the plaintivebluesy side, which builds. andbuilds to several emotionalclimaxes. Great stuff, and a deadcert seller. Flip is a Bossa Novatreatment of the great oldie. Goodperformance.* * * *
THE FOUR SEASONSPeanuts; Silhouettes (Stateside
SS 262).ALTHOUGH they've changed
labels, the hit team couldstill have a surprise biggie
here with their interpretation ofthe years -old teen beater. It's afalsetto laden item with loadsof appeal and in fact coulddo pretty well. Watch out for itin the charts. Incidentally it's atrack from an L.P. Flip is anotheroldie from an L.P. that movesalong very well indeed in typicalFour Seasons form.* * *
PETULA CLARKThank you; Crying through a
sleepless night (Pye 15606).AVERY pretty little songindeed for Pet. It's a catchysort of thing and extremely
repetitive in the nicest possiblesense. Not a strong song for Pet,who can handle better materialthan this but the commercialismof it could give her her first bighit for quite a while. Watch it.Flip is a typical sounding beatballad with Pet in excellent vocalform.
* * *VARIOUS ARTISTS
I only want to be with you;Stay; We are in love; Geronimo;Glad all over; Dominique (Can-non EP 019).
SOME good renderings of cur-rent hits. O.K. for the familywho don't fancy buying all
those pop sides they hear. Per-formances are very good indeed,standouts being "I only want tobe with you," "Glad all over" and"Dominique."
* * *THE CAMEOSMy baby's coming home; Where
e'ere you walk (Columbia DB7201).
FROM the Joe Meek RGMstudios comes this Spring -fields styled folksy effort.
There's a good beaty backing, anda great vocal sound from thegroup. Femme voice is outstand-ing and the song is very good.Could easily be a surprise hit.Flip is a jolly little affair withplenty of appeal-not commercialbut pleasing.* * * *
TOMMY McCOOKEAdams apple; THE MAYTELS:
Everytime (Island WI 102).THERE'S the real blue beatI sound on this Ray Charles
type instrumental with theorgan leading on the "One mintjulep" type number. Commercial,right up to the current trends anda little different to most of thesetype of discs. The vocal group onthe flip really go to town on thebluesy type swinger.* * * *
MORE SINGLES
LEE CURTISWhat about me; I've got my eyes
on you (Decca F 11830).
A POLISHED commercial num-ber from Lee, who deserves
to get a big hit. Very catchyand well -performed with loadsof appeal. Maybe not quitewith that certain something tomake it into the big hit heneeds, but nevertheless there's agood beat and much more pro-fessional quality than most Merseytype discs. Flip has excellentguitar once again, and again Leeis ably supported by the All -Stars. Probably more commercialthan side one.
* * *CLEO LAINE
Love you madly; All gone(Fontana TF 441).
rvHIS girl is always pretty con-sistent. There's a busy Latintype backing on the song,
which moves along very well in-deed. She sings well, and althoughthis won't be a big hit a load ofpeople are going to like this one.Climax, and lushy strings makethis a listenable number. Flipcomes from the film "The Ser-vant" and maybe it should havebeen the top side seeing what plugsit has had. It's a smooth gentleballad with Cleo on top of hervocal form.

ROBERT FARNONCharade; Gina, Gina don't you
cry (Philips BF 1299).
rilHE lovely Henry Mancini-'. Johnny Mercer composition
that's way up the U.S. chartsis given perhaps the most commer-cial of the vocal treatments by BobFarnon here. It's a tender yetdramatic song with loads of appeal,especially to the adult set. by thechorus who mouth their way wellthrough the song. Flip a brighteraffair.
* * *ANDY WILLIAMS
A fool never learns; Charade(CBS AAG 182).
HIGH in the U.S. charts isthis beaty affair penned bySonny Curtis of the Crickets.
Its a good beater with aninsistant guitar backing and adefinate country flavour to it.Different sort of stuff for Andybut it's good, and it looks likedoing pretty well here too. Themuch -recorded tune is given avocal treatment by Andy. More likehis ballad stuff, and an excellentflip. Good double sided value.* * *
IKE AND TINA TURNERGonna work out fine; Won't you
forgive me (Sue WI 306).
RELEASED through the Islandstable, this years -old R & Bhit still sounds great. Throb-
bing guitar, shreiking vocal,tremendous beat and superb lyricmake this into a must for any R & Bfan. Although this is intended forsale amongst West Indians herethere isn't much doubt that youngR & B fans will swallow mostof the copies. Flip is also a greatblues number.
* * * *
DIONNEAnyone

WARWICKwho had a heart; Theboy (Pye Int. 25234).
original version of the1 number that's riding high in
the States. It's a tenderemotional ballad written and pro-duced by Bert Bacharach. Loads ofappeal and warmth and verybluesy. Could have been a hit ifit wasn't for Cilia Black's Beverversion. Flip is the old Timi Yuronumber performed very well indeedby Dionne.
* * * *KARL DENVER
My world of blue; Green Grassgrows all around (Decca F 11828).A FTER a big hit with his last
IA disc, Karl comes up with asimilarly styled' effort that
isn't so commercial. It has adefinite country tinge and there'sthe girl chorus on this one.Plaintive in parts and entertain-ing. A top 50 disc but not a biggie.Nice stuff though. Flip is a fasterfolksier type of thing that movesalong very well.
* * *LOUISE CORDET
Don't let the sun catch youcrying; Loving baby (Decca F11824).
ABUBBLY kind of numberfront the very popular Miss.She has a good voice on this
adult off -beat type of number whichmoves along at a_ medium tempo.It's a grow -on -you number - wefound that out-and could easilygive her a hit which wouldsurprise everyone. But not us . . .
Flip is an excellent teen beaterProduced and written by TonyMeehan. It's a good flipside-asgood as side one.

CHART CHATTER
QUITE a lot of fast movers this week. Newies include Cliffand Cilia Black who looks like having a huge hit with herdisc. Brenda Lee makes a surprise jump it:1-Q the top five,
while Manfred Mann continue their fast upward climb. TheBachelors better their last few discs with "Diane" which leapsinto the top ten, and the Merseybeats prove themselves to be theonly efficient ballad group from the 'pool. The Ronettes are stillgradually climbing-due no doubt to the excellent publicity theyhave been receiving as well as their excellent disc.
Other newies are Ken Dodd with his folksy "Eight By Ten," anda return of the Four Pennies with their "Do You Want Me To."We predict there'll he a lot snore newies next week though. RickNelson looks like having his second top twenty hit on the troton Brunswick, his new label. He's only one place away now.
On the EP scene the Rolling Stones take over from the Beatlesmonopoly with their disc, but maybe it's not for long. For "AllMy Loving" streaks in this week. And the phenomenal ChuckBerry scores with yet another collection of oldies "The Best OfChuck Berry." They really are too!

"Liverpool didn't used tohave any of the clubs thenthat it has now. There wasno -where to go except thestreets. That was where Imet Mike Prendergast. Heused to play in the streetstoo. But on the other corner!So we joined up and for afew months we'd knockaround the pubs and hishouse-he had an electricguitar, just playing for kicks-and drinks. We met upwith some others kickingaround the pubs. We've hada lot of group changes inour time - mainly in theearly days. Then, we hadJohnny Sandon singing withus. But it was in a pubcalled the Cross Keys thatwe teamed up with TonyJackson.

us. And last year we weren'teven in the top 20 Liverpoolgroups! That's why it cameas such a shock to us whenwe were voted the secondmost popular group. That'sthe best thing that's hap-pened to us really. It meansa lot, like our first hit did.
FLAMENCOJohn himself is a well-built
blonde -haired lad who playsrhythm guitar with thegroup. His musical likes areRoy Orbison, the earlyShadows and Buddy Holly.And he'd like very much tobe able to play theharmonica.
"What I really like isFlamenco music. But justthe Spanish guitar. I can'tstand all the stamping feetand castanets. Just theguitar. I'd like to go toSpain too. For a holidaythat is, because eventuallyI want to settle down justoutside of Liverpool. Liver-pool's the place for me, andwhat I don't like about Lon-don is the Show Businessscene.
