    SPANISH RECONQUISTA ARMIES

This extension for “Croisades” was written by Christian Delabos and published in Claymore

magazine #9. This extension consists of rules for troop types used in the panish crusades against

the !oors" plus two scenarios that were also in that issue of Claymore" one by Christian Delabos

and one by abrice $enier. %oth the rules and the scenarios were translated by %ob &ingell.

mainly during siegerelated situations that this type of soldier was used. The best representations of

such militiamen are the 7uarterstaffarmed peasants from “Ai6ings”> Cerdic, Ead'ig, Ecgulf

;,o rules were gi5en for staff slings used for throwing firepotsF a set of rules for this is proposed

below" as a compromise between rules for throwing firepots by hand and rules for shooting

    explosi5e arrows.<

    THE MUS"IM ARMIES

The !uslim armies in pain differed from those in the !iddle (ast by their 5ery important

employment of =a5elinmen and Christian mercenaries.

Bod%guards: The )ndalusian sultans had at their disposal a 5ery loyal personal guard /as long as

treason had been registered4. To simulate the loyalty of these soldiers" results of “retreat” from the

combat results table are ignored. This rule only applies if the sultan is less than 01 hexes distant

from the guards in5ol5ed in the combat. ;,ote also the rule from “Croisades” that all troops within

E hexes of the commanderinchief gain a bonus of /4 in attac6 and defence.< To represent these

guardsmen use the el=u6 infantrymen and dismounted light !amlu6s from “Croisades”> Shammin,

(arhad, Mohammed, Ageel; Baha, &a$i, )aghi, (a*i+, e+elay, Rashid

    Moorish hea&% #a&alr%: or these the el=u6 and yrian hea5y ca5alry will ser5e 5ery well.

'owe5er" in scenarios ta6ing place in the 03th century" you should use a few 6nights from “Cry

'a5oc” to represent the many &renadine ca5alrymen who had adopted Gestern e7uipment. Murda,

     As!Salih, "ili-, Asho$, Mohammed, Moonga, Sue-ac, .assim /0th century Grenadines1 Sir Richard,

Sir Roland, Sir &homas, Sir Gunter, Sir 2ames, Sir Clugney

Andalusian and Ber'er light #a&alr%: These light ca5alrymen were primarily =a5elinmen. Their

armament consisted of a buc6ler" a sword" 3 =a5elins and sometimes a bow. Ge will consider all of

these ca5alrymen to be =a5elinmen /using the rules from Claymore #@ ;see below Sha+ir, A#doul, )oussef, Essem, Said, &a3i; Gashan, An'ar, Magid,

     Mohsen, )assafa; Ahmed, 4ashmi, %#rahim, 2amil, 4usseyin, Baysan, Mesut, A#dul, Ali, &ossaun

)rchers utilise udanese bowmen and dismounted horse archers from “Croisades”>  2ellal, Mustafa,

    Sadi$, 5se'l; )esugai, Arghan, Ru++i$, Bar, Ayu#, (a$r, %mad, Mong$a, 6utu+, Rashid, 7samah

Crossbowmen> The crossbow" imported from Christian territories" gradually became a traditional

weapon in !oorish armies" and we can use the crossbowmen from “Cry 'a5oc” and the !uslim

crossbowmen from “Croisades”. A#dul, (arhat, 2unaid, .ayeen, 2ehangir, "haleed; 2aco8a,

    /- +ire0ots thro1n '% sta slings

;This rule is pro5ided as an option since firepots are mentioned as being thrown by staff slings. The

rule adapts and combines the rules for explosi5e arrows by abrice $enier in Claymore #0B and the

rules for firepots by 'er5J Delattre published in Claymore #3.<

The rule concerns earthenware pots" which were the ancestors of hand grenades. irepots appeared

in anti7uity and disappeared with the arri5al of gunpowder in the Gest. ) writer of this era has

pro5ided this description> “These are pots where fire sleeps" that suddenly explode in a flash" burning up the ob=ects struc6”.

The method of manufacture of this type of weapon was 6ept secret" and to this day we still do not

6now the exact formula for the combustible materials which burned e5en in contact with water.

8ossibly to oil were added 7uic6lime" sulphur" pitch and saltpetre. The weapons were thrown by

hand" by means of a staff sling" or by torsionpowered artillery /mangonels and trebuchets4. The

pots were used to set on fire anything wooden 2 gates" barricades" wal6ways" ships" siege enginesO

The original firepot rules applied only to throwing firepots by hand" and included a high ris6 of the

firepot falling short. Throwing a firepot with a staffsling is more accurate" but should still ha5e a

significant ris6 of failure /a 3BV ris6 of explosion in the firerIs hex applies to both firepots and

    explosi5e arrows4. *t is 7uite li6e shooting an explosi5e arrow from a bow" and is only possible

during offensi5e fire. ;*t is optionally suggested that it should only be possible to throw it at short

range" li6e the flaming arrows in the rules for “iege”.< The fuse must first be lit" one of the most

dangerous moments for the slinger. The player rolls 0D0B" and on 03 it explodes and a fire starts in

    the throwerIs hex.

*f the firepot has not exploded" the player designates a target hex and rolls 0D@ to see if the fire has

any effect on ad=acent hexes around the target. 0 means that only the target hex is affected" 1@

means that one ad=acent hex" counting cloc6wise from lower left" is also affected /the heximmediately in front of the target is ne5er affected 2 @ is the hex on lower right4. ;This rule on a

wide impact zone is based on that for explosi5e arrows" and is =ustified by the fact that a firepot

thrown by a staffsling will be thrown harder and fall from a greater height" which will spread its

effect o5er a larger area than would be the case with a pot thrown by hand.<

)fter the pot has been thrown" it cannot be reco5ered. (ach thrower can only carry one pot" but it is

always possible to pic6 up an unused one from dead or stunned characters.

ire will always appear on the hex hit if it contains cloth ;e.g. tents" people< or wood. se the rules

from “iege” for the progress of the fire.
