So what's new?

Unlike Class Reception attendance in Year 1 is compulsory, not optional. This includes all trips.

Attendance- classroom doors open at 8:45am, registration closes at 9am.

Snacks- children will have a small snack during their morning break time.

Children will be learning from the national curriculum not the EYFS curriculum.

What happens when we arrive in the morning?

We ask parents to encourage children to independently put their snack into their tidy draw, drinks in the drink tray, change reading books and put homework away.

If you would like to, we invite you to begin the busy activity with your child.

What do we do about reading and homework?

Homework will be given every Friday and is due on the next Wednesday. You will be having homework folders to return each week.

We expect that reading will be done with your child every day. Parents should now begin to only read words which the child does not know and cannot 'segment'. Reading books can be returned and changed daily if you wish or when ever you have finished a book.

What will they be learning in Year 1?

Topic which covers history, geography, design technology, art and science, will be themed each term. This is what we expect it to look like next year so far!

P.E is still taught twice a week.

Numeracy and Literacy will be taught over longer lessons in more depth, twice a week.

In year 1 children will use their KRM skills to do a phonics check which is usually in mid-June it is a government assessment which is compulsory for students in year 1.

Children begin year 1 with full teacher support. As we move to the end of the Autumn term, the support is slowly withdrawn in favour of independence.

What are the children taught in Literacy and Numeracy?

In Numeracy there is a high focus on number skills such as counting, adding, taking away, number recognition and place value.

Other skills like data handling, space and shape and using and applying skills are also taught!

In Literacy, children learn a range of new grammatical techniques and cover a range of text types.

Talk for Writing is used to teach narrative and some other text types such as information texts.

We encourage children to say a sentence first, then begin to write it.

What happens if my child forgets to follow the rules and expectations?

In year 1, higher expectations are set for behaviour. Children will be expected not to shout out or interrupt during carpet time and put up their hands during independent learning time.

We follow the behaviour policy, here is a reminder of what that looks like...

What can I do to support my child?

Some children struggle to dress on their own. It might be useful to practise this as much as possible.

Continue to support your children with their homework and book reviews in their diaries.

Familiarise yourself with the schools calculation policy for numeracy this can be found on our class pages.

Birthdays

Please do not provide cakes, harbio, chocolates or any home baking to give as gifts

to the children. This is lovely, however with different dietary requirements and allergies we

do not want to be leaving anyone out.You can bring in hard boiled lollipops or a book

to share as a gift to the class.
