Step 1: Cut the selvages off of the back fabric and square up fabric.

Fold the paper in half lengthwise and width wise as shown at left.

Line up the short end of the paper with the fabric fold matching corners as shown.Fabric Fold

This is a fun receiving blanket. The most common way to make it is using flannel for the top and bottom. I have also made it using a non-flannel on top with a flannel bottom, non-flannel on the top and bottom, and smaller with a silky type fabric. Fabrics should probably be prewashed, but I don’t prewash. My method is a little more relaxed than other similar receiving blankets.

Step 2: Take a pen or pencil and mark along the edge of the paper.

Mark from the fold of the fabric to 1/4” from the top edge.

Pin.

Step 3: Sew along the mark.

Be sure to stop at least 1/4” from the edge.

Step 4: Trim about 1/4” past the seam line.

Step 5: Repeat with all 4 corners.

Step 6: Turn the corners right side out and lay out as shown at right.

Smooth out flat.

Step 7: Lay the top fabric on top of the back fabric as shown at left. The top fabric should be aligned in one corner about an inch from the edge.

Smooth out flat.

Step 8: Trim the other two sides also about an inch from the edge.

Step 9: Tuck the top fabric under the backing fabric that is now on the top of the blanket.

Step 10: Tuck under the seam allowance and pin.

Step 11: Top stitch with a coordinating thread, preferably with a walking foot, right along the edge of the hem.

Use a decorative stitch if desired.

Step 12: Present your receiving blanket to a special child for them to use!
