By Kevin O’SullivanStory

The Munster star series was now in full swing in each grade in the seventies. The juniors saw great competition with Des Morris, Alan Wilson and Bernard Lowen. In the seniors Mick O’Connor, Patsy Casey, Jim Tivy and Dave Johnson, Pat Barry (son of the famous road bowler Mick Barry) John Harrington well known panel beater, were dominant. Around that time we also had a contingent of riders from Wicklow which would have included names like Joe Hartnett, V Dowling, Noel Shackleton, and Dave Chambers, all regular competitors in Vernon Mount. In the expert class, John Foley of Midleton was now the new kid on the block competing with local riders such as Barry Galvin, Arthur Ward, Declan Swanton and his own clubmate Tim Dineen also of Midleton, with Limerick riders, John Maloney and Pat Franklin (RIP) bringing up the rear.By now Moto-x was everywhere in Munster and in Vernon Mount the season began with the annual St Patrick’s weekend two day event. Northern Ireland riders dominated the series and were headed by Winston Norwood, Ray Spence, Dave Crockard Snr and the very talented Rob Wilkinson, competing with our local riders in all grades. In the Summer months the grasstrack season took over completely, especially in East Cork, where we had the Midleton and Youghal clubs running super events, every local festival featured a grasstrack event, with Tim Dinneen of Midleton the king of these grasstrack events. In September we had the Intercity Scramble, as it was called back then, the event started in the 60's and ran for over 20 years. The man best remembered for creating this event was the late Sid Leicester fromLondon (RIP), who together with his wife, children and grand-children kept this event going for so long. The great bond between them, Vernon Mount and Cork city will last forever but more about that later...

For example, both of these guys weigh the same and have the same BMI, however you can clearly see that the guy on the left has more muscle and less body fat and is in far better shape. If he was just focused on weight, he would be considered obese with a BMI of 33.9 (which he clearly isn't). Just one of the reasons that we don't use BMI as a calculation in our evaluations!

Douglas Wellness Centre committed to getting Cork into shape!

As wellness coaches who have been helping people lose body

fat for almost 20 years, the most common thing our

clients tell us is that they want to “lose weight”.

What most people actually mean when they say this is that they

want to lose body fat, they just don't know that!

So throw away the scales today and come and see how healthy your body composition is – in full!

Why you should throw away your scales!

Did you know that it is actually possible to lose a lot of body fat and get a lot leaner without actually losing any weight at all? This may sound crazy but it's true. This is why we always encourage people to throw away their scales because they don't tell the whole story. The truth of how healthy your body composition is needs much closer examination.

Here at Douglas Wellness Centre, we offer a FREE full wellness evaluation, measuring the body composition in 9 different segments, including body fat, muscle weight, hydration levels, visceral fat – that dangerous fat inside the abdominal cavity, around the organs - and metabolic age.

Local sponsorship is something very dear

to us here at Ryan's SuperValu and that is

why we have made every effort to support

as many local organisations and clubs as

possible. Already this year we have

supported local football, hurling,

basketball,

swimming and bowls clubs in the districts

local to all our shops.

Ryan's SuperValu Rich History of Supporting Local

However, the local support we are most proud of, is the number of local jobs we are able to offer to local

people. Our Grange Store alone employs 143 local people and, in a very small area which encompasses our

Glanmire and Togher stores, we have over 550 local people working with us. That does not include the

additional jobs with local food producers and suppliers that we also support. We cannot do this and provide

these jobs without the support of the local community in Grange and the greater Cork region. Giving

sponsorship is our way of saying thanks to the local community for shopping with us every day.

There are countless other organisations

we are proud to be able to sponsor also and we applaud their work most sincerely.

We are proud to be involved with the local schools

and the numerous Tidy Towns committees that keep

our local area looking beautiful.

Halloween Beer!!

Follow us on Twitter @ MatsonsWinesE: [email protected] T: 021 436 95 77

Released around Halloween, Pumpkin Ales are quite varied. Some brewers opt to add hand-cut pumpkins and drop them in the mash, while others use puree or pumpkin flavoring. These beers also tend to be spiced with pumpkin pie spices, like: ground ginger, nutmeg,

cloves, cinnamon, and allspice. Pumpkin Ales are typically mild, with little to no bitterness, a malty

backbone, with some spice often taking the lead. Many will contain a starchy, slightly thick-ish, mouthfeel too. In our opinion, best versions use real pumpkin, while

roasting the pumpkin can also add tremendous depth of character for even better results, though both methods

are time-consuming and tend to drive brewmasters insane

Food Dinners & Desserts “Dinner? It’s a word that can strike fear into a lot of people, but don’t panic because here at Real we

know exactly how you feel, which is why we’ve come up with some easy main courses and to finish off the meal some great ‘anyone can do it’ desserts.”

Easy fish pieIngredients1kg potatoes, peeled and halved, knob of butter splash of milk, 25g butter, 25g flour 4 spring onions, finely sliced, 400ml milk 1 x pack fish pie mix (cod, salmon, smoked haddock etc, weight around 320g-400g depending on pack size) 1 tsp Dijon or English mustard ½ a 25g pack or a small bunch chives, finely snipped handful frozen sweetcorn, handful frozen peas handful grated cheddarPrep time, 15 mins. Cook time, 45 mins. Serves 4 to 6.Method1. Preheat the oven to 200C/ 180 fan/ gas mark 6. Put the potatoes in a saucepan and pour over enough water to cover them. Bring to the boil and then simmer until tender. When cooked, drain thoroughly and mash with a splash of milk and some butter. Season with ground black pepper.2. Meanwhile, put the butter, flour and spring onions in another pan and heat gently until the butter has melted, stirring regularly. Cook for 1 -2 mins. Gradually whisk in the milk. Bring to the boil, stirring to avoid any lumps and sticking at the bottom of the pan. Cook for 3 – 4 minutes until thickened. 3. Take off the heat and stir in the cheese (if using), fish, mustard, chives, sweetcorn and peas. Spoon into an ovenproof dish.4. Spoon the potato on top and sprinkle with cheddar cheese. Pop in the oven for 20 - 25 mins or until golden and bubbling at the edges.

Roast Chicken with Gravy Ingredients2kg chicken, 50g soft butter, 2 tsp fresh thyme leaves (or 1 tsp dried)1 lemon, 1l chicken stock, 2 tbsp flourPrep time,10 mins. Cook time, 2 hrs, 40 mins. Serves 6 Method1. Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3 and put the chicken in a roasting tin. Put the butter into a small bowl and add the herbs and plenty of seasoning. Grate in the zest from the lemon and mash everything together with the butter using a fork. Rub this over the chicken breasts, legs and wings, then push the whole grated lemon into the big cavity of the chicken. Pour half the stock into the tin. Use a large sheet of tin foil to cover the chicken and scrunch together the foil along the edges of the tin so the whole thing is sealed. Put in the oven and set your timer for 2 hrs.2. Carefully remove the foil from the chicken, increase oven to 220C/200C fan/ gas 7, and put the chicken

back in for another 30 mins. If you’re making the Crunchy roast potatoes (see below), put them in now, under the chicken. After 30 mins, take the chicken out of the oven and lift it onto a serving dish. Snugly cover the chicken with foil and set aside while you make the gravy.3. Tip the chicken juices and stock from the tin into a jug. Put the tin over a medium heat on your hob and use a wooden spoon to stir in the flour, with a splash of the juices to make a paste. If you want, spoon the fat off the top of the chicken juices in the jug, then gradually stir this into the tin to make a smooth gravy. Add as much of the rest of the stock as you need to make a good gravy, then serve with the chicken.

Roast PotatoesIngredients1¼kg potatoes, halved or quartered if large 2 tbsp flour, 4 tbsp sunflower oilPrep time, 10 mins Cook time, 1 hr, 10 mins. Serves 6.Method1. Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 6. Bring a large saucepan of water to the boil, add the potatoes, then boil for 5 mins. Drain the potatoes well, then shake in the colander (or back in the pan), to rough up the edges a little. Tip into your largest roasting tin and

10

Page 11: Real issue 4

sprinkle with the flour and some salt. Stir, then drizzle over the oil and stir again so that no dusty flour remains.2. Roast for 50 mins, putting them in the oven on the bottom shelf when you take the foil off the chicken. When you take the chicken out, give the potatoes a stir, then they should need 20 more mins to finish on the top shelf while you make the gravy and set the table

Beef Stew with Potato topping.Ingredients1 tbsp olive oil, 1 onion, finely chopped, 2 carrots, finely diced (about 130g), 1-2 sticks celery, finely diced (about 130g), 2 fat cloves garlic, crushed, 400-500g stewing steak, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, 1 low-salt beef stock cube 2 tbsp tomato purée, 1 x 25g pack parsley, stalks and leaves finely chopped separately, 1kg potatoes, peeled and diced, knob of butter, handful grated cheddarPrep time, 15 mins. Cook time, 2 hrs, 30 mins. Serves 6.Method1. Heat the olive oil in a heavy-based pan. Add the onions and cook for 2 mins, then add the carrot and celery and cook until softened. Add a little water if the mixture sticks.2. Add the steak and cook until browned, then stir in the garlic and cinnamon and cook for a further 1-2 mins until the aromas are released.3. Add the stock cube to 500ml boiling water and stir into the meat, along with the tomato purée and parsley stalks. Bring to the boil and simmer covered for 1 hour, then take off the lid and simmer for another hour or until the meat is very tender. Stir in the chopped parsley leaves.4. Transfer the stew into a medium-sized ceramic dish. 5. Meanwhile, steam or boil the potatoes until tender. Preheat the oven to 200C/ 180C fan/ gas mark 6. Drain the potatoes well and mash with the butter. Spoon on top of the meat, sprinkle with the cheese and cook on the top shelf for around 20 minutes until golden and bubbling

Easy Strawberry CheesecakeIngredients250g digestive biscuits, 100g butter, melted, a few dropsof vanilla essence, 600g soft cheese, 100g icing sugar 284ml double creamFor the topping400g punnet strawberries, halved, 25g icing sugar Prep time, 30 mins. Plus 1 hr and overnight chilling. Cuts into 12 slices.

Method1. Make the base: Butter and line a 23cm loose-bottomed tin with baking parchment. Put 250g digestive biscuits in a plastic food bag and crush to crumbs using a rolling pin. Transfer the crumbs to a bowl, then pour over 100g melted butter. Mix thoroughly until the crumbs are completely coated. Tip them into the prepared tin and press firmly down into the base to create an even layer. Chill in the fridge for 1 hr to set firmly.

2. Make the filling: Place 600g soft cheese, 100g icing sugar and the vanilla essence in a bowl, then beat with an electric mixer until smooth. Tip in 284ml double cream and continue beating until the mixture is completely combined. Now spoon the cream mixture onto the biscuit base, working from the edges inwards and making sure that there are no air bubbles. Smooth the top of the cheesecake down with the back of a dessert spoon or spatula. Leave to set in the fridge overnight.3. Un-moulding and topping: Bring the cheesecake to room temperature, about 30 mins before serving. To un-mould, place the base on top of a can, then gradually pull the sides of the tin down. Slip the cake onto a serving plate, removing the lining paper and base. Purée half the 400g punnet strawberries in a blender or food processor with 25g icing sugar and 1 tsp water. Pile the remaining strawberries onto the cake, then pour over purée.

Light and Dark Chocolate PuddingsIngredients100g bar dark chocolate, 100g butter, 3 eggs 85g caster sugar, 50g plain flour,8-10 squares of milk chocolatePrep time, Ready in 20 - 25 mins. Serves 6

Method1. Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. Butter and lightly flour six 150ml ramekins.2. Break up the dark chocolate and chop the butter. Melt in a bowl in the microwave for 2-3 mins on medium, stirring halfway through.3. Break the eggs into a mixing bowl, add the sugar and whisk until the mixture leaves a trail on the top when the whisk blades are lifted, about 5 mins. Stir in the flour, then the melted chocolate mix.4. Divide between the ramekins and push two squares of milk chocolate into the centre of each. Put on a baking sheet and bake for 12 mins exactly.5. Cool for 5 mins, then turn out onto plates and serveThe puds are good warm or at room temperature, so there’s no panic about serving them straight away. 11

Douglas Ladies U16's took on Eire Og U16's on Sunday 19th October at St. Michaels in Blackrock. The conditions had a huge impact on how the game was played as a strong wind caused havoc with the football throughout the game. Eire Og put up a strong defence, but Douglas went on to win the game by 2 points with Eimear Cotter saving a penalty in the last 10 minutes. It was very hard to pick a Girl of the match, but in the end it was shared by four hardworking players Eimear Cotter, Jade fox, Eimear McAndrew and Niamh Lynch.A special thank you to our mentors who braved the weather all year and throughout the winter training the girls 2 nights a week in Moneygourney, a challenging pitch to train on but with a very special bunch of young ladies it was the best place to be on a Tuesday and Thursday night. We will miss everyone of you, Karen Kellegher, Mick Russell, Caroline Hartnett, Alan O’Neill and Diarmaid Hayes. Championship Selfie!

Has this been your best/most exciting season for Cork City?Yes I’d say definitely, because when I first came back it was all over the place, I signed for the club and four hours later they were in liquidation, then Foras. (Friends of the Rebel army society) came in and the fans, they got a club together and a licence, and for the last four years we’ve been just building, last season was our first proper season, being steady, financially and structurally we were good, then this season we kicked on, so yes this has been the most exciting one.

Like the majority of Cork City fans unable to get aticket for the match in Dundalk, I watched it on TV.90 minutes of chewing my nails, shouting at the screen and kicking every ball, 90 minutes that promised glory but ultimately ended in agony. But as I sit here in front of my computer this morning (Saturday, the morning after) to put this interview together and reflect on what might have been, I have to take the positives and for a team that finished sixth last year having suffered a managerialmerry go round, finishing second to a very good Dundalk team isn’t bad at all.One of the standout players for City this year has been mid-fielder Gearóid Morrissery, we met up with him a few days before the big game to ask him a few questions about himself and City’s brilliant season.

Does being injured and missing a few games at the end of the season lessen it for you?Yes, well, they are the biggest games... I wouldn’t say most important, all season every game has been important, you still need three points from every game. But it does take away from it a little bit.Is it very frustrating?Yes it’s terrible! There’s no nice way of dressing it up, even when the lads win, you know it’s a good win, you’re happy with the win, but it’s not the same as when you’re involved. Football is funny, injured players tend to stick to their own group, if there’s three or four injured players, you’re with the physios you don’t interact with the team as much because you’re in earlier getting treatment before the others and when they’re out training you’re back in with the physios, so you are kind of left out in the cold a bit You started at Ringmahon Rangers and moved to Blackburn at about 16, was that a great experience?Yes it was unbelievable, it was a great learning curve, I picked up so much, it was an invaluable experience, I came home... I was homesick... I came home, which I regret now, but at the time it was right for me, I wasn’t in the right head-space for it, at 16, 17, 18, it just wasn’t the time for me to be there.Do you think you were too young?Yes mentally, physically and all that I was fine, the football was good, mentally I just wasn’t mature enough, maybe if it had been two years later it would have been different.Do you think has it helped you? Do you think if you could go back would you do it again? Or would say ‘Oh no, I’m not doing that? One hundred percent go back! It was just at the time being so young, then I would have been such a home bird, used to being at home, being babied in a way, but when you become an adult and the bills come in the door and all that you realise what you have to do7. When you came ‘home’ and signed for City was that a dream come true? Or did you know you were coming back to play for them? I didn’t know at the time I just came home, I was called up to the Irish U19s at the time and the manager arranged for me to train with Cork City, to keep my fitness up. Roddy Collins was the manager at the time and he sent a request to Blackburn to sign me on loan, but I’d decided at the time I wasn’t going back to Blackburn so after I sorted that out I signed full time for City, which when you’re growing up it is a dream, I used to go to cork City games

when I was a child and the first thing you think of watching the games is someday that could be me... It’s so big when you’re young, you don’t even think of playing, you think, just to walk out on that pitch... So it is a dream come true for meYou play defensive midfield or central midfield?I play defensive and attacking, depends who we’re playing and what the manager asks of me on the day.Do you think with the recent success of Bayern and Spain or Germany, that it’s become the most important position in the team? Most Definitely, it’s the anchor point, you keep things ticking over, you keep the game moving, it is a very important position alrightSo is it annoying that the strikers still get all the glory?Yea! (laughing) Yea that’s always the way, I don’t think that’s going to change.Who is your favourite player? Why?Andrés Iniesta (Barcelona and Spain) He’s just unbelievable. You’ve represented Ireland at under 17 and under 19 level, is it a dream to run out for the senior team?Hopefully, you always want to kick on and do as well as you can in your career so hopefully that takes me to that level What do you do to relax away from football or do you ever switch off?You try to switch off, but you’re always thinking about it, you’re thinking about training the next day, or the game on Friday. I remember a previous manager telling me ‘At the end of a season you’re going to be tired physically, but mentally you’ll be absolutely drained, because everyday you have to be concentrating on it, thinking about it’ If at the weekend there’s a party a family gathering or something you have to thinking well how’s this going to affect me in training during the week, so for the whole season you can’t really let loose... So you don’t really switch offStaying in or going out?Staying inTV or Music?A bit of bothSo what’s/who’s your favourite band/singer?Kasabian (English Rock Band)What’s your favourite TV show?Grand designsAre you the only sporty one in the family? Or is there a history of sports? My Dad played soccer, Munster senior league, he was a boxer as well he made the final of an all Ireland boxing match, unfortunately he lost, my Grandad played for Cork Celtic, he won a Munster senior cup with them

How old were you when you first started to realise you had the talent?Primary school, 3rd or 4th class, people start to notice you, clubs trying to sign you up and stuff, I knew then I must be doing something right If you could go back and talk to your younger self, what’s the one bit of advice you’d give yourself?Be mentally stronger, just that, just have a bit of mental resilience, I think that’s important when you’re trying to do well in sport, it’s the mental knocks that are the hardest thing And what would you say to any young aspiring soccer stars trying to make it in the game?Mental toughness, it’s a huge thing, I know you need lots of things to succeed but I think mental toughness is the most important one.

Gearóid was picked and played for Cork City against Dundalk in the last match of the season, putting his recent injures behind him, here’s hoping he can stay fit and continue with his impressive midfield displays for many years to come, because having met him in person it’s clearto see that he’s one of the good guys, a genuinelynice man... But with a lot of mental toughness.

Gardening"Andrew Quinlan of Carrigane Landscapes brings us part four of his six part guide to building a landscaped garden."

Site Preparation, Levels & DrainageWe are now looking to start the building works. For the purposes of guidelines, lets assume we are putting in paving (in lieu of decking or concrete), with some accompanying shrub beds.Site Preparation:Clear the proposed area of any obstacles, furniture, washing lines etc. Clear roughly the same area adjacent to proposed area if possible for storage of materials etc (avoid storing anything on the lawn if possible). A cleaner working environment is a safer working environment.Mark out the ground. For this use line paint (spray paint with an 'upside down' nozzle – check any builders supplier) and a building line (or garden hose if you don't mind getting paint on it)Use a half moon shovel or a spade to cut out lawn shape or 'dig line'. This will minimise any repair work needed to the lawn at completion. If practical, think about installing raised planting beds instead of drawing this soil off site. How much soil needs to come out? We need to look at our Levels.Levels:Is the proposed paving to be flush with the existing lawn? Are we creating a step? Let's keep it simple, the most important rule is that all paved areas should fall AWAY from the house. A mistake at this stage in the build could prove very costly to rectify, so it is important that the levels are correct. A standard 'dig depth' is 200mm (to be discussed later).Drainage:How will the existing drainage be affected by the project? Do you need to raise a gully? Or redirect? Where will the surface water run off go for the new area? Is the existing ground free draining?A problem we come across regularly is water lodging, if this happens your patio will stain around this area and if the water penetrates it will eventually subside. Sub Base: This is the layer of materials under the finished surface which gives it stability. This is the unseen work which often determines the quality and longevity of the finished product. For the purposes of installing a paved area, the formula to a sub base is this: 100mm hardcore; compacted. Hardcore is imported stone available from any local quarry. To compact this, hire a 'whacker' plate or compressor plate. NB – When spreading this stone, please take into account that the level of the compacted stone will be lower. Check this regularly. 50 mm sand/cement base. This is generally a 3:1 sand/cement mix, and depending on the type of paving, can be wet or dry. 50mm paving. Existing services:More often than not there will be storm and sewer covers to consider. I would advise replacing these with recess covers. This is a cover the paving will sit in to. ( ask your local stone yard) Other services include: Gas, Oil, Water. Standard practice is to bury these services well bellow ground where they will not be disturbed. If you are unsure do not take a chance. Striking oil will take on a whole new meaning. The proposed paving is mainly for recreational use. The next step is the most exciting stage of the build; this is where all the hard work will start paying off. Follow us next week where we will discuss laying the paving slabs and adding the final cosmetic touches.

Pieta House By Tony FieldRecently I read an article in another publication about Pieta House, run by Miss Sylvia O’Driscoll Wong, Clinical manager of Pieta house (phone 012-4341400) located at Highfield Lawn on the Model Farm Road, and if you GPS isn’t working, you drive out the Model Farm Road and turn left at the first set of traffic lights and then second right, then right again. They offer much warmth and care, compassion and empathy for everyone that comes in the door. It’s quite remarkable really. Sylvia went to college to study psychotherapy and then eventually went on to do a Masters in Integrative Psychotherapy and opened her own private practice after that. Sylvia heard of the opening of Pieta House Cork in December 2013, she immediately applied to be a therapist with the organisation and hasn’t looked back. The most important thing for anyone who has suicidal ideation is to actually say it and that’s not as easy as you would think. The key really is CONNECTION, to connect with someone who cares, that number again is 021 - 4341400. If a person believes they have no hope, Pieta House is the place to go, you will be met by Sinead, a lovely person who understands and is kind, kindness is what depressed person needs, when a person has no hope, Sylvia says even after one session, we can see that hope returning, it’s really about touching and reaching someone who is in such a dark place they feel they can’t be reached, but at Pieta House you can be reached in time by someone who cares. The service is completely free of charge, there is no referral needed by a GP. all you need to do is pick up the phone and phone 021-4341400, if you are in need of this service do it now! You will be glad you did. Tony Field (B.A.) Douglas.

TeenagersWhen you're a teenager, 'No' is a complete sentence.Insanity is hereditary, you get it from your teenagers.Society has the politicians and teenagers it deserves. Many teenagers think that their surname is 'Shutup'.To a teenager there's nothing more embarrassing than a parent.Santa Claus has the right idea, only give stuff to kids once a year.Having teenagers is like living with a bowling alley inside your head.Never underestimate a teenagers ability to create trouble. When I was 16 I couldn't believe how naive my parents were about life. When I reached 23 I was amazed at how much they had learned in the last couple of years.I just returned from a teenagers birthday party, I'm one of the survivors.Raising teenagers is like trying wrestle slippery pigs with your hands tied behind your back. You try your hardest to raise your teenagers with patience, honesty and good manners, but they still end up being like you.I'm right behind teenagers who are tired of being harassed by their dumb parents! Take a stand now! Move out of home, find work & pay your own way, while you're still clever enough to know everything.Don't bother discussing sex with teenagers, they'll just laugh at how little you know. The problem with disciplining a teenager is that in no time at all you begin to sound like one yourself. The best way to keep teenagers at home is to create a pleasant home environment, and remove the battery from the car.A general rule of thumb is that if you have given birth to them don't lend them the car.A teenager is a person who complains that there is nothing to do and then stays out all night doing it.You know your children are teenagers when they stop asking where they came from and stop telling where they're going. The difference between a teenager and a parent is that a teenager still has the faults a parent outgrew.

Sophie Moore is a 22 year old girl from grange in Douglas and in June 2013 she was diagnosed with Lyme disease by a German doctor who specialises in the treatment and diagnosis of Lyme disease. Lyme disease, or 'Borreliosis', is a bacterial infection passed to humans through a tick bite. It is currently the fastest growing vector-borne disease. The bacteria is shaped like a corkscrew (called a spirochete) which enables it to burrow through body tissue which most other bacteria wouldn't be able to penetrate. Sophie needs intensive treatment in order to rid her body of this terrible disease but in order to do this Sophie must travel to America where she could need up to 2 years treatment there. The cost of Sophie's treatment will be well in excess of €40,000. We depend on fundraisers to raise this money for the treatment and are constantly looking for support at our events. We also welcome anyone to help us in any way they can. The reason Sophie has to travel so far for treatment is that there is no available treatment at present here in Ireland or the UK as it cannot be classed as a disease. Sophie has a Facebook page that we update regularly with info on new fundraisers and upcoming events along with other links and information on Lyme disease itself. The page is Fight Back for Sophie. For more information on Lyme disease visit www.ticktalkireland.org Watch "Sophies fight against lyme disease" on YouTube Sophies fight against lyme disease: http://youtu.be/sFip1M536aw

Motoring

Here's what you need to know… Part 2

Buying a second hand car?

Following on from our last article in these pages, here's the second instalment of our two- part check-list of important points to consider when buying a used car.

Under the Hood:Check for damage: Dents? Rust? Beware! Look for the VIN (vehicle identification number) where the hood joins the fender. No sigh of it? That's a tell-tale sign that the fender has been replaced.

Hoses and Belts: Important to inspect all hoses and belts for cracks. Radiator hoses should be neither soft nor sticky. Hoses with noticeable swelling where connected to the radiator or engine will need immediate replacing. Might as well check for leaks around hose clamps while you are there.

Engine Check: Here you should have your eyes peeled for evidence of leaks, stains and corrosion. Any evidence of these could be indicative of a gasket leak, which could potentially lead to some very expensive repair costs further down the line. All engine belts should look as good as new. Replacing old belts which can easily snap can prove costly.

Filler Cap: Does the oil filler cap have a foamy residue inside it? If so then you could be forced to deal with a faulty / leaking head gasket. And if that is the case then you might be best of holding onto your money. What sort of condition is the overflow jar in? If you find grimy brown coolant than its possible that it's never been flushed or, again, there is a leaky gasket at play.

Dipstick: Always worth checking the transmission fluid. Pull the dipstick out and inspect the fluid. It should ideally be pink or light red. If dark (and this is sometimes the case with older cars), it should never look or smell burnt. Best to do this check with the engine on!

Timing Belt: The timing belt is the most important belt in a car's engine, and therefore the most expensive to replace. CHECK IT! Test Drive:Brakes: This one is really stating the obvious, but the best way to learn about any car is to take it for a test drive. And one of the most important things to check is the brakes. Press down firmly to decelerate hard in order to accurately judge the state of the brakes (30mph is a good speed to try this test). There should be no vibrations from the brake pedal. Also keep an ear out for noises such as squealing. If the brakes are throbbing you may be looking at having to replace the rotors or pads. There should be no swerving. If it is swerving then the brake calipers or steering components could be worn.

Happy hunting!

Friday Night? It must be Spiders! If you Google images of the 1980's chances are you’ll see bright neon colours, Rubik cubes, leg warmers, pictures of girls dressed like Madonna and guys dressed like Boy George or Prince. But I grew up in Cork in the 1980's and it was a much greyer place than that, We had huge unemployment and the mass emigration of a whole generation of young people across the water to live and work in England, it wasn’t fluorescent, it was bleak. But there was a place were we could go to escape for afew hours ‘Spiders nightclub.’ I always went to Spiders on a Friday night and that meant dressing up, that meant dancing (even if you couldn’t dance and only stood still moving your arms around while staring at the floor) I remember it as clear as day, the queue outside the door being watched by the bouncers and the owner Kenny Lee. While we tried to stand tall and pretend we hadn’t been drinking just so we could get in. Once inside we’d head straight to the fifty pence piece shaped dance floor (that’s hexagon shaped to all you Euro children) the DJ would play all our favourites, not your average 80's pop but darker stuff, Depeche Mode, the Cure, PIL, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Human League, yes there was chart stuff too but it always sounded cooler when you heard it out of one of the huge speakers that were placed around the edge of the dance floor, huge stacks of sound that made your ears buzz if you stood to near them. Then there was the lights, reds, blues, greens, and purples, strobe lights that lit up the whole room, made your whites shine and gave you that slow motion effect. But when the lights went down and the slow set came on, the dance floor would empty quickly then start to fill up again with loved up couples, those were the lucky ones, the ones who already had a date. The rest of us would wander in circles around the edge of the hexagon, looking for the ‘one’ that would say ‘yes’ and slow dance with you. Great romances were made on the dance floor of Spiders. I fell in love with at least a dozen girls I’d danced with in Spiders. Although I’m not sure most of them even remembered me after the slow set, but that was just a part of growing up, wasn’t it?

26

History FRIDAY NIGHT 80'SI know some couples that met in Spiders and are still together. I met my wife there, although I never actually danced with her, or actually spoke to her, she was a friend of a friend of a friend and so much cooler than me.That’s the thing I remember most about Spiders (apart from the curry, because ‘everyone’ remembers the curry!) The ‘cool’ people. The ‘Bowie’ suits, the gravity defying hair, the suede ankle boots, the make-up and that was just the boys! The girls were equally as cool, big hair, shoulder pads and bat-wing pants. I swear one girl I knew even wore a suit made out of ‘Broidery-Anglais’ that’s curtain material to me and you or something Prince would wear and everything was black, no neon in sight. Our parents didn’t understand, “Look at the state of you” they’d say, or “Are they girls or boys?” But we didn't care, we’d turn up again next week, escaping the cold grey world outside Spider’s four walls, the DJ would play ‘Blue Monday’ all of it, and we dance the night away, our hair gel glistening in the lights, our bangle covered hands in the air.And then like a dream it was over, we moved on, found new places, Chandras, Sir Henry’s, Pubs, yes pubs, because Spider’s only had a ‘wine bar’ and that was long before anyone drank wine. Looking back now, admittedly through rose-tinted glasses, the 80's ARE the greatest decade of all and if Google and Hollywood want to believe that it was all fishnets and neon, leave them to it, we know better because we were there and we had Spiders Nightclub.

If you have memories of growingup in the 80's we’d love to hear

from you, email us [email protected]

Letters“Dear Sir or Madam,Unlike Cllr. Joe Harris (Independent) I do not have Cllr. before my name. But I agree with Joe about the parking meters in Douglas. Mr Liam Power, ownerof the Decorative Glass company in Douglas and agood neighbour of mine, made a very important statement in your magazine dated 17/10/14 about the ‘good will gesture’ that is ‘All the business ownersshould stop giving out about the parking meters andgo outside their own premises and put parking ticketson peoples cars as they park, as a goodwill gestureand then over a certain period of time, say six weeks,a month, that’s going to hurt, because traffic wardenscan’t hand out their €65 (65 euro) tickets to the person parking, that will sort the problem, becausethen the council will say ‘hang on’ they’re interruptingour cash flow, that would get them to stand up and listen, then we want three (3) hour parking everywherein the village, just like the shopping centres.. Problemsolved!! I’m a firm believer that if you have a problemand you have the solution... You have no problem!”T. FieldDouglas.Address with the editor.

“Dear Editor I picked up your magazine in O’Driscolls supermarketin Ballinlough last week, when I was reading the Michael Jackson in Cork bit, I was transported back to that night, I too was only young at the time, but Iremember it like it was only yesterday, we (me and myfriends) only had tickets for the first night but we wentback down the following night, we didn’t get very farthough, but we could hear him in the distance. I remember begging one of the Garda to let us through, we told him that we were a band and if he’d let us in when we were famous we’d sing a song about him, oh those were the days, thank you for bringing that little memory back to me.”Catherine MurphyBlackrockAddress with Editor

“Dear EditorWe don’t get your magazine here in Little Island (Yet) My neighbour picks one up for me when she is in Douglas. I look forward to reading it when shebrings it home to me. I think you’ve done a very goodjob with it, I particularly like the facts and the puzzles.I hope that you think about delivering it to Little Island soon. Keep up the good work.”Margaret BarryLittle Island,Address with editor.

On my second day in Paris and my official birthday. I climbed to the top of the Eiffel Tower. Therewas a Long Que, but it was worth it. The view of Paris was breath taking. Then it was off to the louvre. My reaction to the Mona Lisa .... Is that it? I'm going shopping. !! The walk along the seine is as romantic as it looks. Cute little book shops and cafés. The real Paris. Day three. Take note, bring comfortable shoes. You will walk for miles, or maybe it was old age in my case!!! I went to the Champs Élysées. More Louis Vuitton Gucci etc. For us mere mortals the high street stores are great. H&M, Zara and Banana Republic (my personal favourite store) The style of the women was as expected, the surprise was how well groomed the men where. I had whip lash from taking a second look !!

Over all I had a ball. I was exhausted from walking. The highlight for me was going in to the first Chanel store on Rue de Chambon. I got to see the famous staircase. No pics allowed though!! And seeing the Eiffel Tower at night was amazing. I had a fabulous birthday in Paris. I'm looking for another excuse to go again soon. Can you think of any???? Anne Marie O’Halloran

PeopleWith my big 40th birthday looming. I decided to spend it in Paris. Better than standing in Patrick st !! The Eiffel Tower seemed much more appealing. So I went to Paris for 4

days. (A day for every decade.) With my love of fashion and all things old and classy (like myself). It was the perfect trip. On arrival, I Found out it was Paris fashion week. I nearly died !!! I Checked in to my 4 star hotel, expensive but worth it !! Then I hit the

shops gallery Lafayette. You have Chanel, Dior, Cartier, DvF, Gucci, all under one roof. It has to be seen to be believed, especially when Diane von Furstenberg made an

appearance. Even just window shopping I felt as chic as all the French women with their Chanel bags.

Ok lets get one thing straight from the start, ‘Everything’ annoys me, but I’ve shortened this list down because the editor has complained I’m using to much space... That annoys me too.Where to start? Oh I know, When strangers I meet for the first time shorten my name, unless you have a very short one letter name, this has probably happened to you, lets say your name is Kevin. They call you Kev, two minutes after meeting you! Barry is Bar, Nicole is Nic or Nicky. It drives me mad. You don’t know me! Why do you feelyou have the right to change the name my parents gave me!Getting my name wrong also really annoys me, when people call me a version of my real name, likeinstead of calling me Paul (that’s not my name by the way, I’m just explaining) they call me Paulie, or the classic one all Cork people know, that person who’s just rang the radio station to talk to ‘Neil Prenderville’and insists on calling him ‘NIALL’ People who stand to close to me...Ok, people who stand to close to me in queues, breathing on the back of neck. Oh goody they’ve had garlicrecently... Lovely, and they neglected to use any deodorant today. When it’s an ATM Que and it’s your turn and the person behind you doesn't stay two or three spaces back but instead stands right behind you. Oh Dear Lord! I just want to shout at them “MY SPACE!!!”while drawing my arms around me in an imaginary circle.People who when in a long winding Que (think Post Office) don’t stand behind you at the point the Que changes direction, but stand beside you. People in front of you in a Que that daydream and fail to move forward, leaving a huge gap between them and the person in front of them, I always want to push them.People who when it’s their turn in the Que, don’t move when the person says ‘Next’ or the bell rings, number comes up etc. People who tip you on the shoulder in a Que and say “Do you mind if I go ahead of you? I’ll only be a minute.” Really? I don’t think they’ve grasped the concept of queuing.I still don’t let them go ahead of me.Another thing that really annoys me is when you’re in Aldi or Lidel and the person in front of you decides to pack all their bags before paying. It really annoys the checkout girls/boys too because they areon a mission to set new ‘checkout-scanning’ world records. That annoys me too. But not as much as the checkout person that seems incapable of placing your change in your outstretched hand, instead placing it on the counter next to you. I just want to slap them.Something else that really annoys me is the way banks are now self service... But I still get charged bank charges. While I’m talking about that, is it just me or has anyone else thought that if they just got those bank staff that ‘help’ you with the new machines, guiding you through every single step, to go behind the counter and open a few hatches it would speed the whole process up? Very annoying.Late people really annoy me too (no not dead people as in late people) people that say “No problem, I’ll meet you at two” and then show up at ‘ten to three’ and don’t ring or text you to say why, and when they do eventually show mutter something like “Sorry I got held up” I always hope they mean robbed, sadly nine times out of ten they just mean, eh, they got held up.People that say ‘Lost’ instead of dead, as in “I lost my parents when I was twenty one” I just think “That was really careless of you, wasn’t it? Did you look where you last remember having them? (People that say that very sentence when you’ve lost something annoy me too, do they really think I wouldn’t have looked there first?)Till next time...

OPEN: 9.00am ~ 10.00pmSince I was a child, I have always loved food. My mother

would cook all day, we were a family of six and that was

a must in an Italian house. We lived in Rome. At the age

of 7 my mother taught me my first recipe. It was a dessert -

the Panna Cotta. I enjoy the feeling of being appreciated

for what I create and so I knew from that moment I would

become a chef and own my own restaurant. I came to

Ireland in 1999 to start a new life for the new millennium.

It was with the guidance of Natasha

and my late good friend Dan, that

made me decide to move to Cork.

Their faith in my ability gave me the

confidence to take that step.

When the former restaurant ‘Bully’s’

became available, I decided to take

the big step and move the restaurant

from Bandon, starting a new

adventure.

I worked in several places before

opening my own restaurant in

Bandon in 2002. In 2004 I met

Natasha and we have been

together since. She is also a food

lover so we clicked from day one.
