What is our impact on the NYC community?
• UWNYC seeks to put more New Yorkers in neighborhoods of
concentrated poverty on the path to self-sufficiency.
• A child’s ability to read on grade level by 3rd grade is the
most significant predictor of high school graduation, which
is the on-ramp to success in college, career and citizenship.
• In Mott Haven alone, ReadNYC serves over 4,000 children
and their families.
How will we achieve it?
• Through our collective impact approach – we diagnose
community challenges, design community solutions,
deploy resources and drive policy change – creating a
framework for success.
Where/ When will ReadNYC deploy?
• ReadNYC launched in our first neighborhood – Mott Haven
in 2012 and is expanding to Brownsville, Brooklyn in 2015.
Why does it work?
• ReadNYC is a unique initiative that supports Principals and
teachers through leadership and professional development
and coordination with community partners to create school
cultures and neighborhoods that help children and their
families succeed.
• ReadNYC combines evidence-based program and service
interventions that are proven to ensure family stability and
improve educational attainment. See Next Page.
• ReadNYC offers an opportunity for supporters to take a
bold step to invest in creating meaningful impact in literacy
outcomes in Mott Haven (or future neighborhoods).
ReadNYC at a GlanceReadNYC is UWNYC’s signature Collective Impact initiative, based on the National Campaign for Grade
Level Reading, to dramatically increase literacy rates for low-income children. At ReadNYC’s core is a two-
generational family approach. Program and service interventions are designed for both families and children,
therefore strengthening the whole family. The pilot program in Mott Haven is a collaboration between UWNYC,
East Side House Settlement’s (ESH) early learning centers, seven public schools and key community partners.
