Adam was training for the track meet for his middle school. He was to run in three races alone and in one relay. He practiced each day. The first thing he did was to stretch his muscles and make sure his muscles were ready to run. He stretched for ten minutes each morning. Then, he would run up and down the stadium steps three times before heading to the track. After running up the stadium steps, Adam would do twenty laps around the track. Finally, he would run all the way home and eat a large breakfast before showering.

PLACE THE EVENTS IN THE CORRECT SEQUENCE BY USING THE NUMBERS 1-6:

________ Adam ran up and down the stadium steps three times.

Cause and Effect

•An effect is what happens as a result of the cause.•The cause happens first of the two events.•The effect happens second (remember that “c” comes before “e”).•However, sometimes the order is reversed in the sentence. •Your job is to figure out which happened first.

Page 12: Reading Strategies...help you to be a Reading Detective Created by Jennifer Ramirez Syc. 1/2011

Cause and Effect

A story is a lot like a row of dominoes. Something happens first, then that eventcauses the second thing to happen. This

can continue on and on and on....

Page 13: Reading Strategies...help you to be a Reading Detective Created by Jennifer Ramirez Syc. 1/2011

Here are some steps to help you identify the cause and effect.

1. Put the events in order.2. The event that causes an action happens first.3. Use “so” to connect the events in a sentence

Try this: Houghton flooded after it rained last night.

What is the cause? What is the effect?

Did you say...It rained last night, so Houghton flooded.

It rained last night.Houghton flooded.
