DESCRIPTION

Body Paragraph 1- Throughout their involvement in the war, Zamperini and Wakatsuki both suffered a loss of identity, but they also became victims for different reasons. To clarify, both men changed so drastically because of their experiences that their former identities were almost completely erased. While Wakatsuki struggled to understand his identity as an American citizen, Zamperini lost the image of being an Olympic athlete. The text states, “Now his Olympian’s body had wasted to less than one hundred pounds and his famous legs could no longer lift him” (Hillenbrand). This shows how quickly Zamperini’s experience transformed him into a different version of himself. Wakatsuki also struggled to understand who he had become in the face of war. On the other hand, they were victimized in different ways. Zamperini was a victim of his physical environment and Wakatsuki was a victim of racism and fear. Zamperini’s horrifying experience, for instance, began as a soldier, floating in Japanese-controlled waters for twenty-seven days, yet Wakatsuki was a citizen, taken from his home in his own country. According to the text, when Wakatsuki was taken away, he “didn’t struggle. There was no point to it… He was suddenly a man with no rights who looked exactly like the enemy” (Houston). While Zamperini suffered physically from the harsh conditions in the ocean, Wakatsuki suffered the emotional pain of being treated like the enemy. Although their experiences were different, both men were forever changed because of their involvement in the war.

As the war continued, Zamperini and Wakatsuki demonstrated resilience as both of their bodies deteriorated; however, they endured humiliation in different ways. To begin, both victims were imprisoned and survived horrific conditions. When Jeanne Wakatsuki’s father returned from months of interrogation, she stated “He had aged ten years. He looked over sixty, gaunt, wilted as his shirt, underweight, leaning on that can and favoring his right leg” (Houston). Her description illuminates the emotional toll the false allegations of espionage had on her father. Similarly, Zamperini also endured horrific conditions as he was badly beaten and starved while he was in a POW camp. The men also suffered through the humiliation of their experience, although for different reasons. For instance, the guards made a “tittering mockery” out of Zamperini, a former Olympic athlete, by making him race a prison guard when he was grossly emaciated. This cruel act left Zamperini feeling “angry and shaken and his growing weakness scared him” (Hillenbrand). The guards had exposed his vulnerability, but he pushed through it. On the other hand, Walatsuki’s humiliation was not because of the physically hardship; rather it was the accusation that he was a traitor. The allegations of espionage left her father feeling emasculated and powerless. The fact that they survived in such harsh and demeaning conditions demonstrates that they are both tenacious and resilient men.
