Reactions of Hydrocarbons

Learning Goals:I will be able to draw and name the products of the reactions that alkanes, alkenes, alkynes & aromatics undergo.

I will be able to apply Markovnikov's Rule to the reactions of alkenes.

Sep 122:42 PM

All Hydrocarbons will Undergo Combustion:• Combustion reactions:

 Complete: CH4 + 2O2    CO2 + 2H2O Incomplete: CH4 + O2   CO2 + CO + C + H2O

• Let's make some acetylene gas (ethyne gas)

• One or more of the hydrogen atoms can be replaced by a halogen• You can then add other functional groups by replacing the halogen• Requires heat, UV light or a catalyst (not easily done with alkanes! But is easier with aromatics)

Alkanes & Aromatics Undergo Substitution Reactions

Sep 122:45 PM

Alkenes & Alkynes Undergo Addition Reactions:• Much greater chemical reactivity than alkanes• Easily undergo addition reactions at room temperature (called

addition reaction b/c there is no loss of hydrogen atom(s))

1. Halogenation (with Br2, Cl2, etc)

2.Hydrogenation (with H2)

3. Hydrohalogenation (with HBr, HCl, etc)  Alkyl Halides

4. Hydration (with H2O)  Alcohols

Markovnikov’s Rule:When a hydrogen halide (e.g. HBr) or water (HOH) is added to an alkene  the hydrogen atom will bond to the carbon atom within the multiple bond that already had more hydrogen atoms.

Example 1: Draw the compound that will be produced when water reacts with hex1ene?

Sep 122:49 PM

Example 2: What compound will be produced when hydrogen chloride reacts with 3methylpent2ene?
