c o t e tOver the last few months we have beenfocusing on evangelism in our main services, LifeGroups and
Wednesday evening classes. And so it only makes sense as we
finish our series Something to Talk About that this years Reach
Global Missions Week theme asks the question, Can You Tell
the Story? Our Sunday morning speakers are both experts in
evangelism and world missions. They will be challenging us with
using storytelling as a means of evangelism. Jesus told stories
the parables were ways to catch the peoples attention and make
them think. But it was also part of the Jewish culture, as with
many people groups around the world. Stories are often handed
down from family member to family member, through many
generations. The stories you will learn to tell will help you share
the Good News with those you might meet on a short term trip
or right in your own neighborhood. And you will share it through
a non-threatening way through stories.
We hope you enjoy reading through the many stories in this issue
of the REACH Publication.

My daughter, Anna, and I had the opportunity to
visit India and a variety of people and ministries lastOctober. These are a few stories that we would like to share
with you. For a full write up of our trip, you can visit
calvarylife.org/reach.
JOSIAh & hEIDIWe arrived in India and met Calvary
Missionaries, Josiah and Heidi, who live in the
Northern region of the country with their
four young children. They are learning the
local dialect and building relationships with
people from their village.
Although they serve in a heavily Muslim area,
Josiah and Heidi have experienced many
opportunities to share the Gospel through
stories with those they encounter. Our weekwith them allowed us to see rsthand how the
family has adapted to the culture and lifestyle
of this country, and how their understanding
of it allows seeds of the Gospel to be planted.
Heidi is considered a modest woman because
she chooses to wear her scarf covering her
head. Because of this choice, she has been
accepted by many of those in the village and
given permission to spend time in the homes
of different women, a trust that would not
be bestowed upon very many Americans. We
had an opportunity to visit with a Muslim
neighbor of Heidis, and it was obvious thatHeidi had connected with this lady and that a
sweet relationship had developed.
One of the greatest tools in reaching the
people of India is prayer. As Josiah and Heidi
opened their home one evening to other
young missionaries who are working in nearby
areas, they pulled up a map of the city and
committed to take prayer walks in certain areas
where they might not visit as frequently. Josiah
and Heidi are doing great as the leaders of this
team of newbies, they themselves having
only been in the country for about three years.
Pray for this couple who will return to India inFebruary, as they lead others, form friendships
and lay the seeds of the Gospel in the fertile
ground of India.
Our second week in India was spent in Hyderabadprimarily at Joshua Vision Indias (JVI) Carmel
Campus. We were guests at The Gathering aconference for the Master Teachers who had gonethrough the JVI program. During the week there
were several speakers sharing each day, along with
worship in song by individuals and groups that hadtraveled from several states in India. Most of these
former students were there to share about how God
had used them in their area for His work since thetraining. We had the pleasure of meeting with mawomen and men there and were pleased to see all th
Calvarys almost 20 years of partnership with JVhas accomplished. It was a great privilege to spend thos
days under the tent in almost 90 degree heat and humiknowing that we were seeing history in the making
JODIES STORy
Jodie is a woman who traveled to the JoshuVision India (JVI) center for training, leavin
behind her six children while she studied th
for several months. The result of her studie
was hundreds of women who had saved
more than $250,000 through their new foun
micro-businesses, but even more important
several churches had been planted from tho
who had come to Christ from her teaching
training program. Pray for Jodie who has fa

ShANTIS STORyShanti is a young woman who is passionate
about the Gospel and bold in her approach
to telling others about Christ. She is
teaching microbusiness techniques to other
women, and sharing Christs message with
everyone she encounters. When faced withrejection for her beliefs, she responds by
saying, I will shake the dust from my feet
and move on, but you are not rejecting me,
you are rejecting Christ, and one day you
will come face to face with God. Shanti
is a remarkable woman and asks that we
would pray for her to have continued
boldness in telling others about Christ.
ThE bANJARA PEOPLEThe Banjara, a lower caste gypsy type
nomadic group that live in over 16 states
of India and comprise over 20 million
people, is considered one of the least
evangelized and most neglected forgotten
people groups in the world. Dr. Rev.
Lalsingh and his family have been working
since 1996 to reach out to this people
group. He told us of the work that they
had begun and how now there are schools,
training centers for pastors, an orphanage,
churches, and womens relief programs. As
a Banjara himself, Dr. Lalsignhs heart is
in this ministry and he hopes to be able to
continue the programs throughout all ofIndia where this people group resides.
PASTOR RAvINEOn our nal day in Delhi, we had the
pleasure of meeting the Ravine family,
a national pastor, his wife and two sons,
who have begun a church plant in the
poorest area of the city - a city within the
city behind a tall, red brick wall. Inside,
houses are thrown up quickly to allow
the inhabitants, refugees, the very poor
and lower caste peoples, a place to live. There are schools, stores, and at least one
church within this city - the one that has
been started by Pastor Ravine, probably
no bigger than 15 X 15 feet. People
share testimonies, sing, preach out of the
Word, and pray. One man shared that his
neighbor, a Hindu man, called him to his
home early that morning to pray over his
child with a high fever. Once he prayed,
the fever left the boy. The neighbor, his
child and wife were in the service that
morning to talk with the pastor after being
told that they needed to learn of the one
true God that healed their son.
To move from many to one God will take
time for these people, but many have done
so in this church, some are even attending
Bible school and preparing to plant their
own church in the future. Pray for the
message of the one true God to take root
in the hearts of those behind the Red Wall

A Leter fm Ue WakeninCalvary Missionary serving in Vancouver, Canada
with her husband, Tim Warkentin.
I (Ute) am not one for New Years Resolutions. And I dont
write out ve and ten year goals either. Not that I have
anything against those practices of trying to live intentionally.
In fact, I know I could benet from such disciplines. But
as one year has come to a close and another year begins, I
nd myself unsettled, wanting this coming year to somehow
be different in some ways from the past twelve months. Or
maybe I just want to be different, to be transformed
I have been pondering the Incarnation over these past weeks
of Advent. God becoming as small as we aregiving up
unlimited power, wordless for nine months in the womb, a
helpless human infant, born in humility and poverty.
(Luci Shaw)
And as I have pondered, I am nding that God is wanting
to whittle away at some hardened parts of my heart. Wesing a song in our church community called Something Like
Scales. I can belt it out with the best of them, but then
I realize that part of me likes those scales. I resist having
them taken away from my eyes. Scales are like armor; they
are protection for vulnerable parts. They keep tender places
from injury. They keep me from being exposed to the
sufferings of others. And there is staggering suffering all
around us. Unimaginable, inexplicable suffering on so many
levels: individual, familial, societal, environmental, spiritual.
God is leading me to allow the scales of self-protection to fall
away and to give more of who I am and what I have.
I am reminded of Saint Nicholas, a man of great faith andcompassion. The gifts he gave were not toys, but rather he
gave of his resources to grant freedom from poverty and
desperation for the most vulnerable in his community (e.g.
Dowries for impoverished women who would otherwise
starve or be forced into prostitution). There are some
specic gifts God is asking me to choose to give right now in
my life: kindness rather than criticism in my home, friendship
to a refugee woman, and engagement in issues of injustice in
my city. Its a start.
Are there scales that you cling to for protection?
How might God be calling you into a place of greatervulnerability this year?
What is one way that you can give more of who you are or
what you have?
I would love to hear how God is working in your heart and
life so that we might pray for and encourage one another as
we seek to be a light of Gods love into places of suffering
around us.
Smehing Like SaeIn our blindness lead us down that road
In our ignorance lead us down that road
In our violence, hate and indifference
We pray Lord you give us new sight
Let something like scales fall from our eyes
Something like scales fall from our eyes
Jesus, lead us down that road
Lead us down that road - music by Tom WuestIf you would like to hear more from Calvary Missionaries, like the
Warkentins, pick up the Missionary address list on the REACH:
Global table in the WC Lobby and send an email to them requesting
to be placed on their mailing list. Also, the FYI is published weekly as

Easter BasketsFOR OLiVE CREST YOuThBe a special part of the life of a Olive Crest youth this Easter.
Olive Crest reaches out to children who have suffered some form abuse, ranging in ages from birth through 22, serving nearly 600 childr
each day. Calvary would like to partner with this local outreach
extending the love of Christ by giving Easter baskets stocked with gi
and supplies to these children.
Olive Crests biggest need is baskets for teenagers. Although there is
minimum, we ask, if possible, please make six baskets that are alike. Ea
Olive Crest residential home houses six youth, and for the sake of bei
fair, we ask that we have six identical baskets to give to each home. W
are excited to use these baskets as a small means of showing Gods lo
to these kids.
Baskets should be dropped off no later than March 27th.
Please drop off baskets at 2130 E. 4th St., Ste. 200, Santa Ana, 92705.
Here are a few suggested items to consider putting in the baskets.

Her Story:She was in crisis and had no relatives or friends to trust. Alone and
without a job, she was soon to be homeless and back out on the streets
again. She had faced struggles her entire life, but this time it was
different; she was a single mom and now her three year old son would be
impacted too. As a former foster child, she contacted Olive Crest in her
despair and was introduced to Safe Families for Children. T h i s
program believes children will be safe and
nurtured if families in crisis have a
network of support. Safe Families for
Children offered a safe place for
her child with a volunteer family,
allowing her to job-search and
return to school to obtain her
GED. Best of all, she would
maintain full custody of her
son during this temporary
crisis. As a parent she could get
tangible help without having to
stop being a parent.
My Story:Being a mother of three is challenging, but I felt fully equipped to carefor my children because of a supportive husband, loving family, and
having all of our daily needs met. God had been tugging at my heart to
serve in a bigger capacity outside of my own family, and I had always
had compassion for children in need. As a Christian I know that God has
called believers to care for those in need, and scripture had directed us
toward broken families. James 1:27 says, Pure and lasting religion in the
sight of God our Father means that we must care for orphans and widowsin their troubles, and refuse to the let the world corrupt us.
I had been volunteering at Olive Crest, and my husband and I were in the
process of becoming foster parents, when I learned of Safe Families for
Children. We agreed to become a host family in the program when we
realized the powerful impact we could have on the lives of others, both
adults and children. It was an opportunity to extend the love of Christ to
families in need.
Our Story:We met at a gas station on an early
Monday morning. If we had met under
any other circumstances, I might have
judged her tattoo covered arms and
messy car. She looked nervous and
isolated, but I could instantly tel
how much she loved her son as
she held him tight in her arms
He was like any other three
year old, full of energy andlife. I introduced myself and
knew it would take time for
her to trust me. In a move that
was part desperation and part
faith, she handed her child over to
me so she could go to a job interview
and then to class.
As we planned the meeting place for later
that day, I reassured her that I would care
for her son just like I do for my own three
My family fell in love with her little boy
instantly. We enjoyed his personality and
quickly realized his desire to be loved and
accepted by us. I cared for him a couple
of times a week while his mom completed
her schooling and secured steadyemployment. Each time we met she
began to open up more to me about her
past and current struggles. It was obvious
she too just wanted to be accepted and
loved. I was able to encourage her as a
mom and remind her how much her son
loved her and so did our family.

Gods Story:as the weeks progressed, so did our relationship. It took time (and
lots of energy) to establish a friendship, but without this investment
I would not have been able to genuinely share Christs love with her
and her son. As a family we practiced Biblical hospitality and shared
our faith in a impacting yet simple way right in our own home. She
learned how we desired to help her because we, too, have been
ultimately rescued and belong to Gods forever family. A seed was
planted in her life. Meanwhile, God was molding my heart to care
for those in need right here in my community. He was teaching meto be vulnerable and reach out beyond my comfort zone to help
a neighbor in crisis. Safe Families for Children had connected us
together and changed our lives.

Jonahs ImpactWha ud a pphe fm 430 BC impa day?
ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING!
By Shannon Reese, Calvary Church Womens Director
Four hundred years before Christ arrived in Bethlehem,
the prophet Jonah was invited to join God at work.
The word of the Lord came to Jonah, the son of
Amittai saying, Arise, go to Nineveh the great city, and
cry against it, for their wickedness has come up before
Me. (Jonah 1:2)
It might not sound like an amazing invitation, but it was!
The Calling on Jonahs life was to be Gods mouthpiece
to the people God sent him to. This would seem to be
a no brainer, right up Jonahs alley. However, it was a
little out of his comfort zone. The people of Nineveh
were not friendly to the ways of God or His people.
We can only imagine that personal discomfort, fear
of the peoples response, and uncertainty over the
outcome drove Jonah to decline Gods invitation and
instead run as far away as possible.
If youve read the story, you know how it goes. Jonah
boards a ship, goes overboard (literally), is swallowed
by a fish and deposited on dry land by a God of
second chances. But God doesnt give up on Jonah
and instead asks him to go to Nineveh a second time.
Jonah agrees, walks through Nineveh proclaiming
the message God sends to the people, and the
people respond by repenting of their sin and
turning to God. Wow!
Like Jonah, we are living in a world that is not
necessarily friendly to the ways of God, His people
or His Word. Yet God is actively working in our
community and asking us to step out of our comfortzone to join Him. In the past few months, women
at Calvary Church have been studying the book of
Jonah and have been transformed by Gods love
and grace displayed in it. As a result, they have
been boldly stepping out in faith, taking risks and
trusting God alone for the outcomes.
This March we will be learning life principles from
Pauls Co-Workers. Join us and see how these
amazing stories from thousands of years ago are
still vital, relative and can impact your life today!

Theres a vast chasm between how our culture cares for the poor and
how people of faith care for the poor. Society does everything in its
power to make them disappear. It corrals them in woefully failing schools,
turns its back as they migrate to ghettos or dilapidated trailers, offers
a welfare system that creates dependency and strips them of dignity,
and provides an inadequate public defense system that locks em up
and throws away the keys, leaving poor families decimated. And if our
culture cant dispose of them, it laughs at them.
Enter Honey Boo Boo.
The 6-year-old star of The Learning Channels reality show and her family
seem proud of their plight. Honeys mother and other siblings revel in
the little girls antics. Mom feeds her hyper-caffeinated go-go juice to
escalate her already outrageous behavior. Honey rubs her bare belly and
squeals, A dollar makes me wanna holler!
They clearly believe that this is their big moment, their lottery ticket
to success. We know bettertheyve been snookered. Our society has
sunk to new lows by devouring reality shows that turn the poor into our
court jesters. With Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, TLC has outdone
even Jerry Springer in what one writer has called poorsploitation.
The church cares for the poor differently. We dont pretend they dont
exist because Jesus said, The poor you will always have with you (Matt.
26:11). We dont ignore them; instead, we meet Jesus brothers and sisters
where they are (Matt. 25:35-40). We dont laugh at them, just as Jesus
didnt laugh when he told the story of one of his own wallowing in a
pigpen (Luke 15:11-32).
The church, its supporting agencies, and its members actually help the
poor meet their daily needs, get on their feet, and live with promise
(Acts 24:17). Sometimes we have to use tough love (2 Thess. 3:10). As the
body of Christ, we welcome the poor into our churches and befriend
them, yes, and learn from them (James 2:1-13). We know that to defendthe cause of the poor and needy is what it means to know God (Jer.
22:16).
The church should rise up in outrage at the way our culture treats the
least of these. We must refuse to get the joke when Gods children are
stuck in the mud. We must weep at the sight. Society must stop hiding
the keys for success from the poor. Instead, we must share from our
plenty. Or God help us.
