Seven Important Facts To Remember As We Grow Older
#7 Death is the number 1 killer in the world.
#6 Good health is merely the slowest rate at which one can die.
#5 Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day. Teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks, maybe months.
#4 Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday; lying in the hospital, dying of nothing…
#3 All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism.
#2 In the 60's, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird, and people take Prozac to make it normal.
#1 Life is like a jar of jalapeno peppers. What you do today might burn your tomorrow.

This spring has been absolutely beautiful. Everything is greening up and flowers are just perfect this year. Only bad thing --- we have to mow too much. The Kids Care Club at the elementary school did a great job on our walk-a-thon this year. They collected $1,250 for the meal program. It was a perfect day for a walk. The kids had a great time. My granddaughters joined us and really had a good time. The two-year-old even completed two laps of the track. Our program really appreciated all the good work. We have had great turnouts for our Veteran’s Coffee Talk. Several of our people have gone on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. Several more are scheduled to go in the near future. If you haven’t heard about it and you are a veteran come to a meeting and find out about how to get signed up for it. Those that have gone have come home with a lot to talk about and are so proud that they went. All veterans are invited to be the Grand Marshals of the Old Glory Parade on July 4th. Let the Elsberry City Hall know if you want to attend. Our annual LCCOA Extravaganza will be at Troy Clont’s Field on June 6th. A fun day for all is expected. Lots of classic cars, craft vendors and plenty of food and the 5Kolor Run should be really good. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and everyone will have a great time. With summer right around the corner remember to be careful in the heat. Again this year we are a cooling center for those who need a place to go to cool off.
Check out our calendar for all our good activities. Join in anytime. Everyone is always welcome!! See you next month, Cathy

This Month In History
June 5, 1968 - Robert F. Kennedy was shot & mortally wounded leaving the Hotel Ambassador.
June 6, 1872 - Susan B. Anthony was fined for voting in a presidential election, after the 15th Amendment granted African American males, but not women, the right to vote.
June 6, 1944 - D-Day begins with the landing of 155,000 Allied troops on the beaches of Normandy. Soldiers quickly break through, in the largest amphibious military operation in history.
June 11, 1994 - After 49 years, the Soviet military occupation of East Germany ended. Over 300,000 Russians died during World War II in the Battle for Berlin.
June 14, 1922 - Warren G. Harding became the first U.S. President to broadcast a message over the radio. The event was the dedication of the Francis Scott Key Memorial in Baltimore.
June 20, 1782 - U.S. Congress officially adopted the Great Seal of the United States of America.
June 25, 1876 - General George A. Custer, leading 250 men, attacked an encampment of Sioux Indians near Little Bighorn River in Montana.
Saturday, June 27th Grant’s Farm & Schlafly Bottleworks
Board the Tram and ride off through the wildlife preserve where you will see more than 100 species from six different continents. Grant’s Farm is the 280 acre ancestral home of the Busch family, located in the Webster Groves area of St. Louis. Ulysses S. Grant founded and farmed this land; now it is one of Missouri's most popu-lar attractions. From Grant’s Farm we will go to the Maplewood area to Schlafly Bottleworks. Here we will eat lunch and tour the brew house and bottling plant.
Cost is only $15. Due by June 22nd. We will leave the Troy LCCOA parking lot at
8am & expected to return at 5pm.
Sunday, July 26th “State Fair” Musical at
St. Charles Community College
Set against the colorful backdrop of an American heartland tradition, State Fair travels with the Frake family as they leave behind the daily routine of farm life for three days of adventure at the annual Iowa State Fair. Mom and Pop have their hearts set on blue ribbons while their daughter and son find both romance and heartbreak on the midway. Set to the magical strains of an Academy Award winning score, this is the kind of warm-hearted entertainment that only Rodgers & Hammerstein can deliver! Following the show we will eat dinner at 54th Street Grill & Bar in Wentzville (you pay).
Cost is only $15. Due by July 7th. We will leave the Troy LCCOA parking lot
at 12:30pm & return around 6:30pm.
A Full Moon in June is called the Honey Moon .
The darkest night in June will be on the 16th at 11:13pm.
What is a Blue Moon and when is the next one?
Because the time between two full Moons doesn't quite equal a whole month, approximately every three years there are two full Moons in one calendar month. Over the past few decades, the second full Moon has come to be known as a "blue Moon." The next time two full Moons occur in the same month (as seen from
the United States) will be July 2015. The most recent "blue Moon" occurred in August 2012.

Tune Up Your Diet Four dietary changes can have a big impact on the risk of type 2 diabetes.
1. Choose whole grains and whole grain products over highly processed carbohydrates.
2. Skip the sugary drinks, and choose water, coffee, or tea instead.
3. Choose good fats instead of bad fats.
4. Limit red meat and avoid processed meat; choose nuts, whole grains, poultry, or fish instead.
If You Smoke, Try to Quit
Add type 2 diabetes to the long list of health problems linked with smoking. Smokers are roughly 50 percent more likely to develop diabetes than nonsmokers, and heavy smokers have an even higher risk.
Alcohol Now and Then May Help
A growing body of evidence links moderate alcohol consumption with reduced risk of heart disease. The same may be true for type 2 diabetes. Moderate amounts of alcohol—up to a drink a day for women, up to two drinks a day for men—increases the efficiency of insulin at getting glucose inside cells. And some studies indicate that moderate alcohol consumption decreases the risk of type 2 dia-betes. If you already drink alcohol, the key is to keep your consumption in the moderate range, as higher amounts of alcohol could increase diabetes risk. If you don’t drink alcohol, there’s no need to start—you can get the same benefits by losing weight, exercising more, and changing your eating patterns.

Angel’s Angle Riddle Answer : Take the bat and get three strikes--then he would be out.
History of Father’s Day
History of Father's Day in US
Modern version of Father's Day celebration originated in United States of America and thereafter
the tradition spread in countries around the world. The world owes thanks to Ms Sonora Louise
Smart Dodd a loving daughter from Spokane, Washington as it is because of her struggle that Fa-
ther's Day saw the light of the day.
The idea of Father's Day celebration originated in Sonora's mind when she listened to a Mother's
Day sermon in 1909. Sonora (27) pondered if there is a day to honor mother then why not for fa-
ther? Sonora felt strongly for fathers because of the affection she received from her own father Mr.
William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran. Sonora's mother died during childbirth when she was
just 16. Mr. Smart raised the newborn and five other children with love and care.
Spokane celebrated its first Father's Day on June 19, 1910. Though there was initial hesitation, the
idea gained gradual popularity all over US and Fathers Day came to be celebrated in cities across the
country.
President Woodrow Wilson approved of this idea in 1916. President Calvin Coolidge too supported
the idea of a national Father's Day in 1924 to, "establish more intimate relations between fathers
and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations". President
Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's
Day in 1966. Then in 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of
Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. Sonora Smart Dodd was honored for her con-
tribution at the World's Fair in Spokane in 1974. Mrs. Dodd died in 1978 at age 96.

if you don’t, you’ll find an excuse.
