RE-INTRODUCTION TO POETRYTUESDAY, 01 SEPTEMBER 2015

GRADE 8 ENGLISH F.A.L….. TERM 3… WEEK 7

LESSON OUTCOMES • BY THE END OF THIS LESSON I WOULD BE ABLE TO:

• KNOW THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF A POEM • UNDERSTAND HOW LAUNGUAGE, RHYTHM & RHYME

ARE USED IN POETRY• UNDERSTAND HOW PARTS & FIGURES OF SPEECH ARE

USED IN POETRY • WRITE MY OWN POEM USING RHYTHM, RHYME, PARTS

& FIGURES OF SPEECH

RHYME & RHYTHM • WHAT IS RHYTHM??????

• Rhythm is a beat.• It can be found in music (and most poetry) and is

easily identified.• It is usually used a lot in rap music (which is similar to

poetry)• It has a flow to it that you can tap your foot in time to

– not just because of the beat of the music, but because the words have a beat (or rhythm) to them too.

RHYME & RHYTHM • WHAT IS RHYME???????-Rhyme is a repetition of sounds.

-Rhyming often occurs at the end of a line, but can also be found in the middle of a line. This is called ‘internal rhyme’.

For example…The cat and the bat went for a walkThey took a picnic and ate by the dock.

RHYME & RHYTHM • PAIRED TASK (7 MINUTES)

1. READ THE FIRST VERSE OF AKA’s RAP SONG ENTITLED ‘CONGRATULATE’ ON YOUR WORKSHEETS.

2. WITH A PARTNER HIGHLIGHT THE RHYMES AND THE INTERNAL RHYMES FOUND IN THE SONG THEN BRIEFLY DISCUSS THE TYPE OF RHYTHM IN THE SONG & EXPLAIN THE RHYME SCHEME.

AKA – CONGRATULATE (2014)Starts out with a pipe dreamWhite T and an ice creamAll day on the MySpaceMJ, trying to buy faceI had to pay dues, had to make moves on faithEven got booed off stage, trying to put food on plateDropped a couple jewels on tape, now we got views on BaseSo much, loveTrust fund and Kas'lamBad chick in my address and she showing up with that plus oneThrough depths and peaks, wolves dressed as sheepBetter protect the key while I pen this acceptance speech

MORE POETRY TECHNIQUES • IN ORDER TO ENJOY & UNDERSTAND POETRY, YOU

ALSO NEED TO PAY ATTENTION TO HOW LANGUAGE IS USED IN THE POEM..

• LANGUAGE IS USED TO CREATE IMAGES IN OUR HEAD ABOUT WHAT THE POEM IS ABOUT. THIS IS CALLED ‘IMAGERY’.

TASK: WITH A PARTNER,LOOK AT THESE 2 IMAGES AND MENTION THE FIRST WORD THAT COMES TO YOUR MIND WHEN YOU SEE EACH ONE

IMAGERY

LANGUAGE IN POETRY • THE LANGUAGE THAT IS USED TO PRODUCE IMAGES IN POETRY

IS CALLED FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE, BECAUSE THE WORDS DO NOT HAVE THEIR EVERYDAY MEANING (LITERAL MEANING) BUT ANOTHER MEANING (FIGURATIVE MEANING) WHICH OUR IMAGINATION HELPS TO CREATE.

LANGUAGE IN POETRY Language

Literal Figurative

real, actual not real

could include jokes

includes imagery

(in poems and prose)

A pre-schooler drops

her carton of milk and

starts crying. The

teacher says, ‘It’s OK.

Don’t cry over spilt milk.’

A busy executive misses

a deadline to buy some

shares. His investment

advisor says, ‘Don’t cry

over spilt milk.’

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE ACTIVITY!LOOKING BACK ON YOUR STUDY OF POETRY IN PRIMARY SCHOOL, WHAT FIGURES OF SPEECH, USED IN POETRY DO YOU REMEMEMBER??????

FIGURES OF SPEECH • POETS USE A VARIETY OF FIGURES OF SPEECH (SUCH

AS SIMILES, METAPHORS etc..) IN THEIR POEMS TO MAKE THEM INTERESTING AND TO CREATE DIFFERENT TYPES OF IMAGERY.

• FIGURES OF SPEECH HELP US TO ANALYSE A POEM & UNDERSTAND ITS MEANING BEYOND JUST WORDS.

• LET US LOOK AT A FEW COMMONLY USED FIGURES OF SPEECH

SIMILE DEFINITION:A simile is a comparison of two objects using the words ‘like’, ‘as’ or ‘than’.

EXAMPLE:He coughed like a sick cow.Her mind was as blank as a white sheet of paper.Higher than birds, kites rose in the air.

METAPHOR DEFINITION:A metaphor is a comparison of two objects saying one is (was, am, are, were) the other.

EXAMPLE:The moon is a balloon, coming out to play. The road was a gypsy’s ribbon. The telephone, an unscheduled alarm clock, woke me this morning.

PERSONIFICATION DEFINITION:Personification is giving human abilities and qualities to non-human objects.

EXAMPLE:The headlights blinked in the darkness. The sun smiled brightly all day.Leaves danced in the breeze.

ALLITERATION DEFINITION:Alliteration is the repetition of the initial consonant sounds in a line or series of lines of poetry. This creates a pleasing sound effect which adds humour or power to your poetry.

EXAMPLE:‘The fair breeze blew, the white foam flew,The furrow followed free.’Paul patted the pet pig.

HYPERBOLEDEFINITIONHyperbole is an exaggeration. It is used to emphasise an idea. It says that something is bigger, smaller, faster, slower, better or worse than something else.

EXAMPLE:He is so tall he almost touches the sky.I have told you a thousand times not to do that. You are the naughtiest boy in the world.
