WeLCOMe tO A NeW SPRING SeASON At tHe RCM!
Our sparkling spring season offers the chance to make new discoveries, or toenjoy fresh interpretations of familiar works.
As always, we welcome a number of distinguished guests. Alumnus Sir RogerNorrington conducts a concert in memory of much-loved RCM Director MichaelGough Matthews, who died last year. French music was his greatest joy, and theprogramme celebrates this with glorious Fauré and Berlioz. Also visiting the RCMto give masterclasses are two outstanding violinists – Nicola Benedetti andAlina Ibragimova – and two of the greatest Wagner singers of our time: Sir JohnTomlinson and Dame Anne Evans. And great actor Edward Fox joins RCMmusicians for a unique performance of Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale.
Two festivals this season offer new treats. The keyboard festival Kalinka! takesus to Russia – and promises some surprising new takes on the music ofRachmaninov and Scriabin – and there is a chance to discover the remarkablemusic of the Italian composer Ivan Fedele during the first ever UK festivaldevoted to his works.
A number of important composer anniversaries are marked this year, includingthree in one programme by our RCM Classical Orchestra, who perform CPEBach, Rameau and Gluck with historical techniques on modern instruments. AndRichard Strauss is represented by his epic tone poem Death and Transfigurationand his beautiful Serenade, which features in our Chamber Spotlight in theBritten Theatre.
We are marking another anniversary – the centenary of the outbreakof World War I – with a series of chamber music written between1914 and 1918. And we are also exploring the musical legacyof World War II in our long-term collaborative project Singing aSong in a Foreign Land, offering a rare chance to hear somestunning music by composers displaced by the conflict.
Other highlights include Bach Cantatas, another spectacularprogramme from Tim Reynish and the RCM Wind Orchestra, achance to hear Varèse’s incredible percussion masterpieceIonisation, and last but certainly not least, four performances ofthe opera Arianna in Crete, Handel’s sumptuous re-telling of theGreek myth of Ariadne, Theseus and the minotaur.
We look forward to welcoming you.

Singing a Song in a Foreign Land
In the 1930s, countless composers across Europe were persecuted bythe Nazis and forced to flee their homelands. How did they react torelocating to another country? Did they embrace their new home, orwere they overcome with nostalgia for the land of their birth? That is the focus of the RCM’s two-year project Singing a Song in aForeign Land, led by RCM performer-researcher Norbert Meyn. Now thatproject comes to a climax with a concert series and three-daysymposium that promise to explore these issues, and to entertainaudiences by presenting some rarely heard repertoire.

Clavier à lumières 12.00pm Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall

Todemonstrate this to audiences, hedeveloped his “colour-organ” – theClavier à lumières – which projectedcoloured light into the concert hall.
To pay tribute to this visionarycomposer, star RCM pianistspresent a unique musical marathon:all ten of Scriabin’s Piano Sonatas, interspersed with colour-inspiredpiano music from around the globe.
