We also have a large quantity of $5.00 Frisch’s gift cards. Stop by the bell tower before or after weekend Masses to purchase your Shopping Cent$. We want to thank ALL our Christmas Season customers and hardworking volunteers. We especially want to thank Blust Motors and Schneider Brothers Electric for their large business orders. What a gift that would be to our school and families, helping to offset tuition costs. Pick up gas cards, Meijer gift cards, and restaurant and retail gift cards for all your everyday needs. Thanks again to all your support!

ARE YOU AWARE that the Parish Office is looking for a few volunteers to help input information we have collected for the census and Sunday contributions? We have an extra computer and you could work anytime it was convenient for you. If you are interested, please give the office a call. Thank you.
ARE YOU AWARE that during the holidays, Father’s house was vandalized? It was egged, paint balled, and a window was broken. It was a double pane so no one was able to get inside. Seems several homes on Dry Ridge also suffered some damage. If you see anyone close to the homes with a carton of eggs in their hand or paint guns, please call the police. We did so there is a record on file.
ARE YOU AWARE that we were gifted 32 shares of P & G Stock? There was no donor name listed so the Archdiocese sent it back to P & G. They will not release it until we come up with the rightful owner. If you were this generous person, please let us know so we can collect the donation from P & G. Thank you.

THE SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 18, 2015
PASTORAL COUNCIL UPDATEPastoral Council met on Monday, January 12, with a full agenda. We were very pleased to hear of the tremendous response to our Annual Fund Drive with $150,000.00 pledged by 216 families. Many, many thanks to all who have donated thus far and a word of encouragement to all parishioners to make a donation this year.
It was shared with council that since our School Principal, Ms. Blum, is on an administrative leave, Mr. Al Grote has been named the Interim Principal for the time being. Al is a parishioner and has over 45 years of experience in the field of education.
Council reviewed the school’s current financial status and the proposed budget for 2015/2016. Tuition rates for next year have been set by the School Board and were shared with the school parents on January 14.
The school will be celebrating Catholic Schools week from January 26 through the 30. Open House will take place from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 29. All parishioners are asked to call the School Office (385-7970) and share names of new families who may be interested in sending their children to St. John’s School. Also, all parishioners are invited to serve as tour guides the night of Open House, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. If you can do so, please call the School Office to volunteer. All parishioners are invited to come to Open House to tour this wonderful school.
Pastoral Council will have two seats open starting in September, because two current Council members finish their terms of office. If you are interested in serving on Pastoral Council, please call Al Grote (245-9943) or the Parish Office (385-8010).
Submitted by Al Grote, Pastoral Council Chairperson
In two weeks, January 31 and February 1, will be Commitment Weekend for the annual Catholic Ministries Appeal. God calls each of us to live our faith by generously sharing our
gifts to serve those in need and to proclaim the Good News of Jesus. Every registered parish household should receive a CMA mailing from Archbishop Schnurr. Please prayerfully complete your pledge card and return it in the envelope provided, or bring your completed pledge card sealed in its return envelope to Mass. Thank you for supporting the important local ministries of the CMA.

THE SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 18, 2015
Indeed, the Catholic Church allows for the option of cremat-ing the body of the deceased person. However, the preference is that the body be buried (Order of Christian Funerals [OCF], Appendix, 414). Theologically, the physical body has a dignity of its own. This dignity is expressed, ritually and liturgically, by way of incensing, sprinkling, touching, prayer over the body, gathering with the body, and so on, during funeral liturgies, vigils, and burials. These rituals show that, indeed, the Christian community affirms the dignity, worth, and care of the one who awaits the final Resurrection of the dead. The human body is deserving of reverence, whether alive or dead. The Church, moreover, clearly pre-fers that the body be present for the funeral liturgy, even though crema-tion may be an option. The Church asks that, following the funeral lit-urgy, but before the rite of committal (that is, burial or interment), the body may be cremated. During the vigil or wake and at the funeral liturgy, the body is present. Then, the body may be taken to be cremated, and buried or interred.
Cremated remains cannot be scattered or displayed in the home (OCF, Appendix, 417), rather, the remains are to be buried or interred, especially in a cemetery, mausoleum or columbarium (417). These are places where people can go to offer prayers for the deceased and mourn the physical loss. These spaces provide the psychological and spiritual separa-tion between the deceased and the living, as well as the recog-nition that, even though deceased, this person is still a part of the Church. These spaces recognize that the Church is more than just the living but includes those who have gone before us in death and who await the final Resurrection of the dead.
In those cases when the body cannot be present for the liturgy, but the cremated remains will be at the funeral liturgy, the Church offers an appendix to the Order of Christian Funerals — the ritual compendium of liturgies, rites, and

prayers from the time of death to final burial. This appendix provides options for the presence of cremated remains. It states that “the cremated remains of the body are to be placed in a worthy vessel. A small table or stand is prepared for them at the place normally occupied by the coffin. The vessel con-
taining the cremated remains may be carried to its place in the entrance procession or may be placed on this
table or stand sometime before the liturgy begins” (427). A burial pall is not placed over
the worthy vessel of the cremated remains. Many parishes now have ossuaries into
which the cremated remains are placed as a way to contain, in a worthy man-ner, the cremated remains.
In Baptism, discipleship began. Discipleship continues throughout life, and does not end at death. God’s overflowing love in Jesus the Christ
remains faithful to his covenant. God will not let death have the final word (4).
Death does not extinguish life but changes one’s relationship to God and to one another.
The physical body has a dignity of its own, because death does not sever the bonds of disciple-
ship with God or with one another. One now lives differ-ently, awaiting the final Resurrection. We, who mourn the death of another human person, pray that this person may be worthy of God’s abundant life in a new way. Death is not an end, but a transition into a new or changed way of having life in Christ Jesus. Cremation, while allowed, does not express the full dignity that God and humanity has for the deceased. Having the body present for the vigil and funeral liturgy, affords the community of disciples — that is, the Church — to express their grief, loss, prayers, and hopes for the new life of one who is born into eternal life.
Kristopher seaman is the associate director of the Office of Worship for the diocese of Gary.
