Membership update from Rotary International: Rotary membershncreased in 2014-15

    Rotary’s prelimi-nary worldwide

    membership figure

as of 1 July is morethan 1,209,000

    members in over

    35,000 Rotaryclubs. This repre-

    sents a net increase

    of more than 20,000

    Rotary memberssince 1 July 2014.

This is encouraging, and indicates that the innovative ap-roaches we’re using to reach out to new members, and

keep existing ones, are reaping rewards,” says RI General

Secretary John Hewko. “It’s gratifying to see the elementsf our membership strategy, such as the brand strengthen-

ng initiative, a more robust social media presence, and

he Rotary Global Rewards program, bring in new mem-ers.”

The implementation of new digital tools designed to en

hance the membership experience has helped drive

growth, say leaders at One Rotary Center. More than14,700 Rotary clubs (43 percent) have adopted Rotary

Club Central to set and track annual goals for member-

ship, service, and giving to The Rotary Foundation. Rotarians have posted more than 8,900 projects on Rotary

Showcase since it launche in 2012, reflecting more tha

    6.8 million volunteer hours.

“As always, while celebrating these milestones, we

should use them as a springboard to new achievementsHewko says. One of our 2015-16 goals is to increase clmembership by 35,000 people, expand the diversity of

members, and keep more of them at Rotary.”

RI President K.R. Ravindran and Hewko hosted two

Twitter chats during Membership and New Club Deve

opment Month in August to talk to members about whythey joined Rotary and the benefits of club membershi

One sunny morning at the end of June1991, a van drove through the busy, rush-hour streets of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Wind-ing through traffic to a northern suburb, thevan arrived at the Forward Command

Headquarters of the Defense Ministry. Se-curity guards stopped it for inspection. When they did, the two suicide bombersdriving the van detonated their cargo: thou-sands of kilograms of plastic explosives.

e roof of the building was blown off completely. Debris wasewn for blocks. In total, 21 people were killed and 175 peopleured, among them many pupils of the girls' school next door.ore than a kilometer away, the blast shattered every window iny home. My wife raced toward the sound of the explosion  – ward our daughter's school.

ur daughter was then nine years old. That morning, she had

rgotten her pencil case at home. At the moment of the blast,e was coming out of a stationer's shop, admiring her new pen-s. Suddenly her ears were ringing, the air was filled with sand,d everywhere around her people were screaming, bleeding,d running. Someone pulled her into the garden of the badlymaged school, where she waited until my wife arrived to bringr back to our home – its floors still covered with broken glass.

i Lanka today is peaceful and thriving, visited by some twollion tourists every year. Our war now is only a memory, and

e as a nation look forward to a promising future. Yet so manyher nations cannot say the same. Today, more of the world'suntries are involved in conflict than not; a record 59.5 millionople worldwide live displaced by wars and violence.

Rotary we believe, in spite of all that, in the possibility oface – not out of idealism, but out of experience. We haveen that even the most intractable conflicts can be resolved

hen people have more to lose by fighting than by working to-ther. We have seen what can happen when we approachace-building in ways that are truly radical, such as the work ofr Rotary Peace Fellows. Through our Rotary Foundation, ace fellows become experts in preventing and resolving con-

ct. Our goal is that they will find new ways not only to end warst to stop them before they begin.

mong the hundreds of peace fellows who have graduated frome program, two from Sri Lanka, one from each side of the con-

ct, studied together. In the first weeks of the course, both ar-ed passionately for the rightness of their side. Yet week by

eek, they grew to understand each other's perspective; today,ey are good friends. When I met them and heard their story,ey gave me hope. If 25 years of pain and bitterness could beercome by Rotary, then what, indeed, is beyond us?

e cannot fight violence with violence. But when we fight it withucation, with understanding, and with peace, we can truly Be

    Gift to the World .

    Foundation Chairman’s November 2015 Mess

It is well-established that The Rotary Fdation is the focus of attention in the mof November, and we try our best to pucize our Foundation programs and to ramoney to fund the programs during the

    entire month! But why November?

The idea started in May 1956 when theBoard designated the week of 15 Noveber as Rotary Foundation Week. The dignation was firmly in place by 1961 wh

was a Rotary scholar in South Africa, and most of the south African clubs featured programs about the Foundation thatweek. I also observed the same focus when I returned homand joined the Rotary club in my hometown of Unionville, M

Many of our clubs at that time scheduled low-cost meals at meetings during Rotary Foundation Week and donated the ings to the Foundation. It was a good way to produce Found

tion funds at a time when most contributions were still madeclubs, not by individual Rotarians. But why did the RI Boardselect the week of 15 November in 1956 and then expand i1982 to the whole month of November, starting in 1983-84?

My speculation is that the initial decision in 1956 was basedthe realization that many clubs in the Northern Hemisphereparticularly the large clubs, were not fully active during theirsummer months of June, July, and August. Therefore, it wabest to wait and give time for the clubs to educate their members each year about the Foundation. And since the Foundcontributions were coming from the clubs, it gave the clubs to raise the money, but still send it to the Foundation in the half of the Rotary year for investment purposes. It was a wiwin situation for both the clubs and the Foundation!

Regardless of whether my speculation has merit, Rotary Fodation Month has been, and will continue to be, a critical facin the success of our Foundation. It is the month that our cluand districts continue the tradition of educating our Rotarianabout the amazing quality of our Foundation programs andseeking the needed contributions to make the world a betteplace.

Our Foundation is a premier organization, and it owes its sucess to the support of Rotarians, many of whom have gainetheir appreciation of Foundation programs during the traditiemphasis on such programs in November. The importance Rotary Foundation Month should not be discounted, and I hthat all of our clubs will feature the Foundation during the mof November. It is a significant and productive tradition, andencourage all Rotarians to take the time to attend their clubdistrict Foundation events this month. Embrace the traditionCelebrate the Foundation!
