    Key messages in this report:

On 8 April 2015 RC Holy Spirit opened 35coin cans with contents amounting to

about P21,000 for the END-TB IN QU-EZON CITY flagship project of DGSam Pagdilao. Earlier, in the midst ofthe joyous D3780 Xmas party event,Holy Spirit turned over to Gov SamP50,000 raised by Holy Spirit Interna-tional Relations & Service chair IPP DrBong from our sister club RC SAEGWANGJU D3710 KOREA. With a fewmore coin cans possibly coming, RCHoly Spirit has already raised andturned over P71,000 for the flagshipproject of D3780, probably one of the

largest cash donations raised by a clubin the district.

ROTARACTORS & INTERACTORS ofHoly Spirit once again demonstratedwhat they always do best: SERVICE ABOVE SELF. Four Rotaractors and 4Interactors volunteered to assist BCPMarites Nepomuceno, Youth Servicechair PP Marcia Salvador and D3780staff Ms Faye in the tedious tasks ofcan-opening, coin sorting, counting andpreparing deposit slips. More youthpartners had wanted to volunteer but

were excused because we only had 35cans to deal with.

Today, there are so many more ways tocommunicate than ever before. In the age ofvideo conferences and instant messages, wecan work together from almost anywhere, and always be in touch; we can share our

Rotary work on Facebook, on Twitter, and onRotary.org. But there will always be a tre-mendously important role for the magazinethat you are holding in your hands – or read-ing on an electronic device – right now.

he Rotarian is one of the oldest continuously published maga-nes in the world, with an unbroken publication history datingck to its first issue, featuring Paul Harris as a contributor, in11. Back then, the magazine was printed in black and white,d was only a few pages. The type was small, the pictures

ere few, and the advertisements were for piano dealers, haber-shers, and a hotel fully equipped with hot and cold running

    ater!

ow, you can read The Rotarian on your phone or tablet, andgional magazines are published in 24 languages. Seventeenobel Prize winners and 19 Pulitzer Prize winners have writtenr the magazine, including Mahatma Gandhi, Desmond Tutu, eorge Bernard Shaw, and Nicholas Murray Butler. Everyonth, The Rotarian brings us a snapshot of the best of the Ro-ry world: It engages, entertains, enlightens, and inspires.

an age of constant communication, with so many ways to findw information, do we still need a Rotary magazine? Abso-ely. Because the magazine is now, as it has always been, onethe best ways to spread the word about Rotary. It has allowede to share the fun and excitement of Rotary Days, it show-ses the good work of Rotarians around the world, and it puts aotlight on important issues affecting us all. The Rotarian isn't

st enjoyable for Rotarians – it's a great way to boost Rotary'sblic image, and show the world the work that Rotarians do.

o when you're done reading this issue, pass it along. Ask your-lf who might be particularly interested in this month's articles.ve the issue to a friend, a co-worker, or a colleague. Share itth someone you've invited to a Rotary club meeting. Visitww.therotarianmagazine.com to share stories on social media, send links through email. Use it to Light Up Rotary   – just as

otarians have been doing for more than 100 years.

Sunday, 12 April, marks 60 years since the Salk po-o vaccine was declared safe, effective, and potent.n that time, the number of polio cases has dropped

by 99 percent worldwide. With just three countriesemaining polio-endemic, we are closer than ever to

    eradicating this crippling disease.

Jonas Salk‟s inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) hasbeen crucial in helping us reach our goal of a polio-ree world. Before the vaccine was widely available,n the United States alone, polio crippled more than35,000 people each year. By 1957 -- two years afterhe introduction of Salk‟s vaccine -- cases in theU.S. had fallen by almost 90 percent, and by 1979,polio had been eradicated there. The impact on the rest of the world has taken

onger. In 1988, when Rotary International launchedhe Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) with itspartners at the World Health Organization, UNICEF,and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Pre-vention, polio continued to cripple children in 125countries. Today, polio remains endemic in onlyhree: Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. And it has

been more than eight months since Nigeria‟s lastcase, making a polio-free Africa a real possibility.

Salk‟s vaccine will play an important role in the end-

game strategy against polio when 120 countries in-roduce IPV into their routine polio immunizationsystems this year. Leading that effort are the GPEIpartners and Gavi, a global vaccine alliance, alongwith Sanofi Pasteur, the largest manufacturer of po-o vaccine.

“As more than 120 countries in the world are inducing IPV, we are beginning the last chapter on lio eradication,” said Olivier Charmeil, Sanofi P

teur‟s chief executive officer. “At Sanofi Pasteur, have had a long-term vision of IPV as the ultimpublic health tool able to finish the job started wOral Polio Vaccine (OPV).”

Rotary Information: KOREAN SAILOR-ROTARIAN MAKES WAVESFOR END POLIO NOW.

njoying calm winds and peaceful Pacific wa-ers, Seung Jin Kim dove off his 43-foot sail-oat, the Arapani, to swim with some dol-hins nearby. The serenity that day near thequator was a stark contrast to the 60 mph

winds and 23-foot waves he had to fight

round Cape Horn, the southern tip of SouthAmerica. But Kim, a veteran sailor and mem-

er of the Rotary Club of Seokmun, inhungcheongnam, Korea, expected suchhallenges when he set out in mid-Octobern a 25,600-mile journey around the world.n addition to fulfilling a lifelong dream, Kims using the trip to raise awareness and funds- his goal is $200,000 or more --or Rotary's End Polio Now campaign.

He's now more than halfway through the voy-

ge, which is expected to take eight months. As of 23 March, he'd passed South Atlantic

nd is now in the middle of the IndianOcean en route to Western Australia.

I want to give people the belief and aspiration to create aetter and more prosperous future," says Kim, who choseailing With Hope as the theme of his voyage. "Rotary isoing that with polio eradication, so I'm sailing aroundhe world in support of the effort to wipe this disease fromhe face of the earth. I want people to know how close were."

o spread the word, the Arapani carries a 68-foot mastwhose sail is emblazoned with the End Polio Now logo. He

opes people who see the logo will be curious enough toook into his cause.

The success of our fundraiser depends on how muchublicity we get," says Kim. "The bigger the crowd of peo-le we can attract [when he completes the trip], the more

money we can raise for polio eradication."

While he is in daily contact via satellite phone with his

upport team, which includes Korean Rotary members, hecknowledges that the solitary aspect of the journey is dif-cult. "The toughest part of this trip was the moment Iealized I was all by myself in the middle of the ocean. Aullen feeling of loneliness suddenly invaded me," says

    Kim.

Kim, who expects to return to Korea in late May, will haverossed the Pacific, Antarctic, Atlantic, and Indian oceans.

He says the things he's most looking forward to are aome-cooked meal and being able to sleep under the same

roof as his family. But he's already anticipating settingagain. "I want to do this again, he says, "but with yosailors who have the same dream of sailing around

     world."

Kim's journey is sponsored by 18 districts in Korea. day he set off, Korean Rotary members posted poemsspirational words, and photos around the marina. "Iso grateful for [the members'] support and encour

ment. They are a wonderful inspiration for me," says K

Sun-Hyung Cho, governor of District 3620 and part osupport team, says the district's Rotary membersclosely following Kim's progress.

"We are so proud of his voyage around the world," says. "This is important for Rotary because Kim's mescan help convince other Rotarians to get more involvethe End Polio Now fight. I believe positive attitudetract positive reactions from others. Kim's positive thing has helped gain attraction to our cause."

Rotary International posted on Rotary Voices: WORKING TOGETHEWE GET MORE DONE.

By Joe Kamau, service project chair for the Rotary Club of Naivasha, Kenya

My Rotary club recently completed a very successful RotaryAt Work Day in January where we cleaned up a poor com-munity near Naivasha, Kenya.

This activity was truly a collaborative and inter-generationaleffort, bringing together members of the Interact Club ofTrinity Mission School, the Rotaract Club of Naivasha, members of Rotary, friends, community health workers, andlocal government officials.

In total, more than 300 volunteers turned up for the activity, which went on for six hours. The slum has over 200,000people. Due to the poverty level, the rate of infection frompreventable disease is quite high in this neighborhood.

Our club, through our president, Juanitta Ndila, promised to

donate dust bins to the community. In April, Rotaractorsfrom the Naivasha club in partnership with the Rotary Clubof Naivasha and health workers will host a free medicalcamp in their community. Collectively, we work together tohave a bigger impact. Isn‟t Rotary great!

Members of Rotary, Rotaract, and Interact join community health workers incleaning up an impoverished community near Naivasha, Kenya.
