H ow can we continue to be the Bestest neighborhood in all of St Pete? What changes would you like to see in 2012? That is my question to all Riviera Bay area residents, not just to our RBCA members. We want to hear from as many of you as possible. We’ve inserted a survey in this newsletter for you to let us know what you think. PLEASE be honest and blunt. I’m a big boy and I can take it. You can be anonymous if you want, or you can give your address and pick from a couple of prizes for giving us your survey back. You can fold it and mail it back to us for 45¢, drop it off at a meeting, or drop it in the RBCA drop box at 163 87th Ave N. Change from Bi-monthly to Monthly or Quarterly meetings? Change meeting days or times? Have more or less events? Disband the association? I know we can’t please everybody, and believe me, I’m not happy with everything that happened last year — like having to cancel our Police & Fire Hero picnic & missing some very easy grants because of a lack of volunteers just to do the paperwork. How can we continue to be the Bestest neighborhood in all of St Pete? What changes would you like to see in

I know we can’t

please everybody, and believe me, I’m not happy with everything that happened last year — like having to cancel our Police & Fire Hero picnic & missing some very easy grants because of a lack of volunteers just to do the paperwork.

If you would like to volunteer, this survey will also allow us to have a list of people that need community service hours, maybe substitute newsletter deliveries, area cleanups, conflicts with city meetings, help with pursuing grants, picking up food, additional candle distributors, etc.

Anywho, if elected President again on Feb 2, I can only promise again to do the best I can with what I have to work with in the Bestest Neighborhood In All Of St Pete,

— Prez Dave Hoover

2011 Christmas Eve Boat ParadeOur boat parade went exceptionally well this year and everyone was definitely in

the holiday spirit. The weather was absolutely perfect and the tide allowed most of the boats to get down almost all of the canals to the end. Some additional boats joined in along the way and exactly how many there were in total is impossible to say, but the general consensus was 23 to 25 boats. There were some enormous backyard crowds along the route, with lots of people cheering us on and yelling holiday greetings. Lots of lights, bonfires, celebration, and the joyful sound of good cheer was the rule. We all look forward to our neighborhood boat parade and those of us who decorate our boats and sail in the parade are very proud to participate and we are always excited by the overwhelming reception that we receive from everyone. Next year, we will strive to make it even better and bring the parade to every neighborhood home that we can. Thanks, so much, to all who were on the boats and in the back yards. Well done, one and all!

about the importance of respecting our waterways. Amy and Erin Singh, two local residents (ages 10 and 8) have been working hard to install many of these south of 83rd Ave. Erin says, “It helps the environment and I like doing that. It’s really fun for me to have this new experience.” According to Amy, it’s important to do this “because it reminds people to stop polluting our water and protect the environment.”

RBCA Board Member Dave Kandz has also been installing them on the north side of the neighborhood. If anyone else would like to help with installation in your area, please contact Dave or Donna Hoover. (Info on back page)

Have you noticed the beautiful new drain markers around the

neighborhood lately? They are blue and green, and read “No Dumping, Drains To Bay.” Purchased with a grant from The District, the neighborhood is thrilled to have these drain markers to remind everyone

NEW DRAIN MARKERS 2012 ElectionsYou really owe it to your family

and yourself to get more involved and actually participate to improve or a least maintain your neighborhood. There are so many things available for the neighborhood that we miss out on because we don’t have enough volunteers. The neighborhood really needs active board members for whatever time they are willing to put into it. The more involved people we have, the more we can accomplish.

Speaking about elections, if I’m re-elected in 2012, the first thing I’m going to have to change is myself. I will no longer be a control freak that has to do everything myself like I’ve been doing for a long time now.

I haven’t burned out yet, but I need to slow down a little and enjoy life more and don’t sweat the petty things. I’m going to have more board meetings and I’ll just have to give up some of my activities to others. I’ll still do as much for the RBCA as I physically can. The neighborhood will still continue and I’ll still be able to enjoy my life and maintain whatever is left of my sanity, nuff sed.

Keep Pinellas Beautiful has a road adoption program, and the RBCA has adopted 83rd Avenue N, east of 4th

Street North to the San Martin Bridge. This program requires us to clean the area 4 times a year for the next 2 years.

We are now planning our 5th Clean-Up Day for Saturday February 25th starting at 10:30 am till 12 noon.

We will meet at the front parking lot of the closed Rio Vista Elementary School just off 83rd Ave NE and Macoma Drive. The more volunteer’s we have, the less distance has to be covered by each person. We will give you all the supplies needed, and as usual, we won’t charge you anything at all for all that great exercise.

Please call 727-579-3644 to volunteer or just show up the day of the event. If you have a local business and are interested in sponsoring volunteer T-shirts with your advertisement or logo, call to discuss the details. Hope to see you there.

If you already have enough “people stuff”, do what Toni Michalove did for her birthday party in Dec. She invited

people to bring her anything she could donate to the local animal shelters. I’m telling you, the pictures don’t do justice to all the great “animal stuff” people brought that she was able to donate. What a great idea, Toni. The world is a better place because of people like you!

Toni is also the RBCA resident that has very generously donated all the beads we’ve thrown from our float in numerous parades throughout last year.

Our Spring Neighborhood Yard Sale event is scheduled for Friday through Sunday, March 2nd, 3rd & 4th. Call Donna Hoover 579-3644 to be marked on the map before Tuesday February 28th. You don’t have to have your sale all 3 days, but this is the perfect opportunity to sell or buy some real treasures. Some people have the best turnout on Friday during the day, and

some people have the best turnout on Sunday after church hours. The RBCA will advertise this sale in the Tampa Bay Times and the Flyer for all 3 days, advertised times are 8 am-2 pm, but you are always welcome to set your own days and hours for that weekend.

The RBCA will set up large Neighborhood Yard Sale signs at certain locations along 4th St and 83rd Ave on Thursday night to direct traffic into the neighborhood based on the locations of those residents/members that have called to get marked on the 500+ maps that get handed out FREE at each sales location between 78th Ave and 98th Ave. We also have a few smaller signs that we can place inside the neighborhood if we have time, but all other signage directing people to your location is up to you. We will pickup all of the RBCA signs we place, and please be a good neighbor and remove any signs that you have posted whenever your sale is finished.

RBCA SPRING

YARD SALESince we are using RBCA funds to

print and advertise, you must be a RBCA member to get marked on the map. Membership is only $10 per household and runs from Jan-Dec. A convenient membership form is printed on the back page of this newsletter for you to mail in with your $10 check, made out to the RBCA

If we get rained out 2 of the 3 days, we will put the signs out for the following weekend, but we won’t have time for the advertising. It’s time once again to trade your unused stuff taking up your space for somebody else’s unused stuff that takes up even more of your space. Happy Un-Cluttering to everybody!!!

83rd Ave N BridgeNeeds Replacing

This bridge will probably have more to do with raising our

property values than anything else we will do in our lifetime, so when I saw 2 “Officials” walking around this bridge, I turned around and stopped and found out that they were traffic Engineering Consultants for the County, just starting to inspect and review the bridge’s conditions as to

how soon the County might need to replace this bridge which is now considered “functionally-obsolete.”

Whenever it does get replaced, we will be asking for your letters and emails supporting a higher, wider, straighter bridge in its place. A higher bridge would allow bigger boats into the neighborhood, which would instantly raise everybody’s property values. A wider bridge below would help the tidal flow so it wouldn’t trap as much silt on our side of the bridge, and a wider bridge on top would be needed to provide enough safe space to have the Pinellas Trail extended

over it. A little straighter bridge would eliminate the “dog leg” sight restric-tions of the present bridge and make it safer for everybody. WE NEED PEOPLE NOW, during these early discussions, that are willing to step up and make a big change in our future, to follow this process along and “lobby” our “bridge wish list” with the County, the City, the Coast Guard, Politicians, and whoever else they may need to talk with. Please contact anyone on the 83rd Ave Bridge Committee (info on back page) to get involved and help in any way pos-sible.

Mayor’s Night OutMayor Bill Foster and City Council invite you to Mayor’s Night Out, as the city brings its full array of services to the neighborhoods. Speak one-on-one with the mayor and other public officials, and

get the services you need from City Hall. During the coming year, Mayor’s Night Out will be held in each of the eight City Council Districts. You are invited to attend one or all of the Night Out events. Mark your calendars.

Police Forfeiture Grant

The RBCA will be seeking a Police

Forfeiture grant in 2012 for Motion-Activated lights for your home and for your docks. Several residents have voiced their concerns about people in the canals at night, some of which have electric motors and are wearing dark clothing, and that items have disappeared from their docks.

We realize that a lot of people fish at night, but we also realize that a motion-activated light that doesn’t stay on all night will go a long way toward putting our residents at ease at night.

PREZ DAVE FOOTNOTE: Hal Hammer from Riviera Bay Builders has volunteered to discuss the various options available with anyone interested in installing lighting around their property.

I have gotten great responses about Andrew Smith’s fishing articles and Hal Hammer’s housing articles. I

would also like to see more people send in 3 line personal announcements for the MEMBER’S FREE CLASSIFIED section. If you’d like to put something in this newsletter, please send it to me at [email protected]. I can’t promise it will always be printed in the next newsletter due to whatever space limitations we may have at the time, but I’ll do everything I can to get it in there._______________________________________________

St Petes Rock And Roll1/2 Marathan - Volunteers

The city of St Pete is looking for volunteers to help with the Rock-N-

Roll 1/2 Marathon on February 9-12. We can either do this as a neighborhood (if we get enough volunteers) or volunteer on your own. If you are interested in joining Dave and I, call 579-3644 and leave us a message or contact the city on your own at 800-311-1255. Information can be obtained at www.runrocknroll.com/st-petersburg

We had beautiful weather again this Christmas Eve. Our display looked fantastic. I want to thank all our

volunteers for their hard work. We had 3 new volunteers and a few open routes. I’m hoping we can get more volunteers to cover all the routes next year. Please thank your neighbors when you see them for their time and hard work. This was my 22nd year and we have four people who have delivered candles longer than me - Ingrid & Wayne Busselle and Mary & Mike Reed. Our neighborhood thanks to: Marc & Carrie Plotnick, Nancy Haines, Heather Green and her helpers, Terri Hammer, Debby & Lance Obst, Sheryl & Mathew Spencers, Karen Smith, Kenny Turcotte, Kim Triplett, Sandy Mitchell, Mark & Julie O’Brien, Wayne & Ingrid Busselle, Denise Spornraft & Diane Croft, Mike & Mary Reed, Don Steer, Dennis Smith, Judy Cannon, Susa Hanks

From the Prez: I want to say a BIG THANK YOU to Jean & Rod Tyack & Donna Hoover for coordinating our candle display again this year and also to all our volunteers (spouses & family included) that went door to door to help make everybody’s Christmas Eve just a little more special. Next I want to say another BIG THANK YOU to Hal & Terri Hammer for coordinating our boat parade again this year and also to everybody that participated that made our area extra special for a lot of people that night.
