Message The psychiatrist M. Scott Peck says that “one of the confusing things about religion is that people go into it for different reasons: there are some who are attracted to religion in order to approach mystery, while there are others who are attracted to religion in order to escape from mystery”. He says that both attractions are valid, sometimes for different sorts of people and sometimes for the same person at different stages of their spiritual journey or emotional development. There may be a time, especially if you are younger or have had life experiences that are chaotic and confused, when you want it all straight down the line. You want to be told what to believe and how to behave. But there are also times, particularly as you get older, when your experiences don’t fit the pattern. Times when you begin to wail: ‘But it’s just not that simple’, and answers that once seemed satisfying become too naïve or prescriptive. At this point, especially if you are one of those who came into the Church to find certainties, you might well ask what value there is in dwelling on things we don’t understand. The purpose of Lent is to encourage and strengthen us on our Christian journey. How can exposing our ignorance possibly help? It is a reasonable question and I would offer these answers:

• Because that is how life is! If we pretend that Christianity can satisfactorily explain everything we encounter, from motor neurone disease to the origins of the universe, then we are kidding ourselves. We become wise by facing up to harsh reality, not dodging it!

• Because ignorance is a scary thing, and realising it can make us doubt our very being. If we are not careful, fear will push us into denial and from there to defensiveness and from there to attack. It is only by facing our limitations that we can ever really become confident in what we do know.

• Because the God we worship is the prime mover, the great intelligence behind the whole universe. And while Jesus invites us to know him as Father, in and astonishingly intimate and personal relationship, if we focus on that alone we might easily lose an appropriate sense of reverence and awe.

• Because Jesus taught that one of the key virtues of the Christian faith was humility – sadly one for which Christians are not always known. If we do not have this humility then our relationships will fail. They will fail from the lowest level of personal relationships to the highest level of public debate. Even though we bear witness to our faith, our dogma and arrogant certainties may well antagonise more people than they convert.

• And lastly because if we think we have it all sewn up, if we lose a child’s sense of wonder, then what a lot of life’s fun and delight we will also lose.

Through this year’s Lent course – The Mystery of Everything – the author Hilary Brand seeks to help us think through these issues. Why not join us, details can be found on page 6? Steve Carter – 01228 710215

Mothering Sunday Mothering Sunday falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent (26th March this year). In the 16th Century the Church of England deemed this particular Sunday a day for adults to make a pilgrimage back to their Mother Church. As a result, many a son and daughter released from work by their masters to visit their Mother Church would also end up reunited with their actual mothers.

Tidy-up Day Saturday 8th April from 10.00 am. Margaret Pinguey – 016974 76279

Lent Courses “The Mystery of Everything” is a new and original Lent course by Hilary Brand, which takes the multi-award winning film about Stephen Hawking, The Theory of Everything, as its starting point. The course explores ways in which the mysteries of the universe and of everyday life - and the acceptance that we have more questions than answers - can reinvigorate our faith and spiritual journey. The course is based around five weekly group sessions entitled: The experience of wonder, the enigma of weakness, the complexity of relationships, the encounter with frailty, the hope beyond brokenness. The course will take place at 3 venues, over 5 weeks. 10.00 am. on Tuesdays, beginning 7th March at 27 The Square Dalston 7:30 pm. on Wednesdays, beginning 8th March at different venues around Wreay 7:30 pm. on Thursdays, beginning 9th March at the Vicarage in Dalston Steve Carter – 01228 710215

Stockdalewath Weather – January 2017 What a contrast to 2016! January this year was dry (39.7 compared to 142.15 mm in 2016). It was in fact the 4th driest I have recorded since 1989. 1997 holds the record with an incredibly low figure of only 3.98 mm. There were only 8 days without frost in January that year and only a small amount of snow. As far as temperature is concerned it was near average, the Maximum being half a degree higher and the Minimum only marginally lower than average. It was breezy at times in the month but there was only one short spell around the 11th with strong winds but nothing that caused any damage. January can be a cloudy month. This year was somewhat sunnier than most Januarys with, in the region of, 80 hours sunshine (about a third of the maximum possible). This was made up of periods of dull, sunless weather interspersed with several bright, sunny days. The 26th could be said to be clear and sunny all day. Statistics RAINFALL Total:- 39.70 mm Average:- 96.07 mm Wettest Day:- 28th (6.55 mm) Days with zero rain:- 11 TEMPERATURE Maximum:- 10.3º (6th & 10th) Average Maximum for 2017:- 6.95º Average Maximum since 1989:- 7.09º Days above Average Maximum:- 15 Minimum:- -5.4º (5th) Average Minimum for 2017:- 1.02º Average Minimum since 1989:- 0.49º Days below Average Minimum:- 17 Days with Frost:- 17 Days below -5:- 1 (5th) REVIEW 2016 As I indicated last month there were significant differences between 2015 and 2016 with regard to rainfall at the end of the year. I would suggest that 2015 and 2016 would have been very similar in terms of rainfall if the last two months of 2015 had been near average. As it was there was almost exactly average rainfall in 2016 (892 mm in 2016, as against 886 mm average. This figure would have been a lot lower without the wet January. It just goes to show how perverse the weather can be. With so much initially being channelled into discussion on flood prevention, we then get a dry winter, allowing some politicians to conveniently forget what has gone before. There is little to say about the temperatures experienced during the year as both Maximum and Minimum were almost exactly on the long-term average. The Minimum was 4.84º as against the LT average of 4.47º. The Maximum was 13.67º compared with the LT average of 13.71º. The 2016 averages are showing a slight increase over the average at year 2000 (Min 4.04º, Max 13.54º). There were few days where the temperature reached much above 25º but likewise few extreme frosts occurred. It was not an especially sunny year. There were no prolonged sunny spells. Nor was it a windy year, there only being a few storms and then not extremely damaging. On the whole, it was just an average year. Ewan Preston – 016974 76277

All Saints Church Festival Weekend 2017 Raughton Head All Saints Church Festival Weekend 2017 will be focussed on Marriage This year at All Saints we want to celebrate marriage and are looking for your help. You are the people and families who live and work in our community. We would really welcome your input in making All Saints Festival Weekend a success. Our intention is to provide an exhibition space similar to last year where everyone can have their marriage celebrated. We are interested in all marriages, it doesn’t matter if you we’re married at All Saints, Carlisle Cathedral, a hotel, in an ice church in Lapland, on a beach abroad somewhere, register office, anywhere at all. We’d be particularly interested in non Christian marriages such as Hindu, Jewish, Islamic or the likes. Please also include all parents, grandparents, anyone from your extended family, both past and present. The more information you can offer the more interesting the exhibition, we’re looking for a minimum of; Full Names When and where married Date and day A Photograph Current address To really celebrate your marriage though it would be great if you provided those little extra pieces of memorabilia which could include copies of a number of before, during and after the service photographs Order of service/Hymns Names of other music played Video/CD of the service Special readings Bible readings Location of reception Location of honeymoon Marriage certificate Categorising each wedding depends largely on what we receive in the first instance, but by each decade would provide an interesting visual contrast. Alternatively this may be split into families. We’ll see nearer the time! The table area we set up last year will be used for wedding albums. We realise not everyone will be willing to trust us, let alone the public with such a precious heirloom, but we’re hoping that some folks may take us up on this. There would be supervised/monitored to ensure good treatment and wouldn’t have to be available for the two days. A few hours would be gratefully appreciated. One point of attire worthy of display would be the bride’s dress. These would be hung up or displayed on a manikin. Should you have yours available, we‘d be delighted to exhibit these. The groom’s outfit would also be gratefully considered.

Any item presented to us would be taken away, photocopied by us, or be a photocopy already. Should you wish to provide original documentations and photographs, we shall be having at least two people on overseeing the festival, but we can’t guarantee security. It’s maybe a lot to ask, but if the basic information is provided and a few other items of memorabilia, then we could have the start of something interesting, relevant, educational and perhaps poignant. The setting up will be done by others, although any help would be gratefully received. We are looking to have all information available to us by 2nd August to allow enough time to photocopy, return originals and consider the most appropriate layout for the exhibition. The sooner the better please. Please contact Rod Phillips with any queries or questions. We really want to make this a great weekend to look back on, so please get involved. Provisional dates for your diary Friday 27th October - Setting up day Saturday 28th October - Open All Day (9.00 am. to 6.00 pm.) Sunday 29th October - Open All Day (9.00 am. to 6.00 pm.) Raughton Head W.I. – January Jackie welcomed 19 members and one guest to our 1st meeting of 2017, which was also our 93rd Birthday Party. On a sadder note, we had heard that Ann Porter who had been previously a member and President had died two days prior to our meeting. Cynthia said a few words to the group about Ann. We followed this with the business of the evening. A brief resume was given of our AGM in November. For 2017 Jackie is to remain our President, Marian continues as our Secretary and Penny remains in her role as Treasurer. All other committee members are listed on our new 2017 programme. The overall winner of our 2016 competition was Ann Overton, followed by Amanda Grace, Ina Monkhouse and Margaret Pinguey who were all in joint second place. The result of the November AGM meeting competition was 1st Vera Harris, 2nd Beryl Craig and 3rd Ann Overton. To round the AGM meeting off, Peter Ebbatson told us about his cycling holidays with his family. We took the opportunity to remind ourselves of our Christmas Lunch at The Queens at Warwick on Eden. Everyone who attended enjoyed the event. We followed the business with our supper, which was Pie & Peas or Quiche & Salad. Followed by fruit salad. Peter & Emma Ebbatson provided the entertainment for our birthday party with a Fun Night. This involved quizzes using many different themes, from answering questions to building lego towers. We were not perhaps on the Krypton Factor scale but we all had a good laugh and enjoyed the experience. A vote of thanks was given by Jackie. The Competition (judged by Peter) was A Humorous Card. 1st Vera Harris, 2nd Anne Ludlam and 3rd Shirley Chapman. Next Month we are going to have a talk about Machu Picchu in Peru from Graham Holliday. The competition is a Photograph of an Animal and the hostesses are Shirley Chapman and Vera Harris. Joan Bowman will give the Vote of Thanks. Marian Collins – 016974 76903 [email protected]

Raughton Head W.I. 2016 We started the year with our 92nd birthday party, where we were joined by The Dalston Songbirds, a group of mothers and children who gave us the most beautiful rendition of songs. February came and our speakers were George Cairns and Chris Hudson, who talked to us on the subject of Lone Lady Drivers, which hopefully resulted with all the drivers in the room being more aware of driving alone. They also asked the age old question as to who are the better drivers, men or women? The answer was obvious, ladies of course and all agreed that this answer was non negotiable! In March we heard the Confessions of our local Squirrel Ranger. April came and as spring was approaching we were shown how to create a ‘floral display in a container’ by Sally Pigg of Roseberry Floral Design. After being shown it was our turn to create a display. The results were very good and showed what a creative bunch we are. This brings us on to our May Guest night, where we had guests from Burgh by Sands, Crofton, Great Orton, Kirkandrews and Kirkbampton. Our entertainment was The Great Ribena, who performed magic and comedy, and kept us laughing from beginning to end. Our summer outing in June was to the Lakeland Distillery, whereby lunch followed by a tour was enjoyed and samples of whiskey, gin and vodka were on offer. Unfortunately the drivers had to make do with the vapours. It was back to base for July, where we had a very interesting talk from Al McCaig of the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team. It was nice to know these people are here if we get lost on the Fells. In August we once again veered away from our normal meeting place and enjoyed the Gaitsgill Supper Trail. The first venue being at Shirley Chapman’s for our starters and then onto Cynthia Ebbatson’s for our main course. It was a lovely evening and a time to relax and socialise with good food and good company. Come September we learnt about Blood Bikes Cumbria and the valuable work they did. This was followed in October by a talk from Dennis Donald about tracing his family history. November is our AGM, but still a meeting to enjoy. Once the business of the evening was over we enjoyed homemade soup and fresh bread. Giving us time to chat and look back on the year and wonder what the new year will bring. We don’t have an official meeting in December but enjoy getting together for a Christmas lunch. 2016 saw us at The Queens, Warwick on Eden. Everyone enjoyed the good food and had a good time. A fitting end to a good year. Members have twice attended guest nights at Ivegill WI, which have proved very enjoyable and interesting. We have had members taking part in Darts matches and Women Walk the World. We have also continued with attending Felicity Coulthard’s ‘Remember When’ group and her Art Group. Once a month some take a walk, organized by Vera Harris, which is very enjoyable, especially the cup of tea or coffee at the end. We have enjoyed the events and activities of 2016 and now 2017 is upon us, we once again look forward to the new year ahead and all the new things that the new year has in store for us. Any ladies interested in joining us, we would love to see you, we are a friendly bunch and if you do have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
